Mine is definately a P79, not a PB board. I know the other user has Razor devices going into the USB. There was another user that the board eventually failed but he as well was using Razor devices. I do know for a fact these devices poll at higher than normal rates on the USB and are also high power drain, though not above sepc.

The P79, and most likely PB boards, are known to have USB power issues. I can't say for a fact this is the killer of the boards but I am highly suspect of that. Even with my board I have at least one port with power issues but I do not stress those ports out by any means.

Speculation but, it could be this high failure rate is why Gateway never had a large market saturation of P79 systems in the US. The quads only made it internationally and never to the states at all. I believe it was Canadian and Australia that got the quad versions with the Q9000. The iCores pretty much killed them off quickly as well, who wants old tech?

How do I know if a usb port is under stress? The only usb items I run are a wireless mouse and a cooling pad.
So I wonder, should I get a 7805 instead, since I ordered the improved heatsink and fan for a P79? I have a p7805, that has never given us any problems, and my 7811 was ruined from a spill. The only MB that has actually failed, was the last P79.

it is the device, each has their own amount of power draw. As an example only one USB device plugged in and 98ma, my mouse...........

The application decides on using the driver or PhysX. As far as version the latest should work fine. You may find in games some are better than others for FPS. I correct clock mine with NVidia system tools to 550/1000/1350.

I'm wanting to upgrade the memory and maybe the cpu heatsink. What is the best 8gb memory speed I can upgrade to, and is there a # for a better cpu heat sink?

I just put in 2x4gb pc1600 memory that will run 1066, our limit, at CAS6. That is the absolute best you can get, It was a tight fit because of the heat spreaders. There is memory out there that without heat spreaders should work fine......................
