I've been asking time and time again on this board since I bought my 6831 in Feb about a guide to taking the laptop apart to put as5 on the gpu. I've done it for DELL's so this should be cake. Unfortunately everybody just ignores me =\

i vote that i am NOT the guinea pig for the teardown...im quite content with my gpu idling at 41C
-
-
well my gpu idle around 40-42 no reason in the world to do it.
just saying whoever jumps that train, make sure to bring a camera along. -
I've had experience doing this before. The only problem is, I'm not entirely sure where to start. Once I have a general idea how to proceed, I'm sure I can figure the rest out. And I suppose I can do a picture guide while I'm at it. But I need pointers first, and I'm guessing the very first part that goes off is the media bar piece.
-
Hmm, my GPU idles somewhat higher at around 45-55. Raised about 2 inches at the back, but no cooler.
I'm not worried, as that temperature is within limits. A few hours of Universe at War brings up to 70-80.
I think there was someone who mentioned that they as5'd their GPU? Not sure if I remembered it correctly. -
I do recall a couple of people who have done it. I don't think they did a tutorial though otherwise it'd probably be stickied.
-
nope. it was only one person who ever said they took one completely apart. and we waiting to hear back from that person now. to see if he in fact did take one completely apart or just took to covers off.
-
I put my faith in your johnksss! Come back with some good news.
-
Do I remember right that thwre are 2 spirals around the CPU at the positions marked as 2 and 3? (In the 6831FX)
-
i remember 5 is the one over the chipset (far left)
so on the one lower corner right (2?)
and one cross corner next to the latch (3?) -

I followed the guide and installed a T9300 in my 6860FX. Mine did not have any springs, is that normal? I printed the guide out and read it several times before following it step by step very carefully, Plenty of light, etc. There is no way that mine had any springs at all. Be that as it may, the guide was great and the install went perfectly, Laptop running great. Just wondering if they stopped putting the springs in or what. THe laptop is 1 week old.
After performing the CPU upgrade, I could not imagine doing it without a magnetized screw driver.
Many Thanks,
M. -
I didn't use a magnetized screwdriver! I actually had to use a pair of tweezers to position the screws. I felt like I was playing the game Operation!!!! -
Thanks Vader, back to gaming then.

FYI...
There's a T9300 on eBay ending in about 3 hours. Not mine (I got mine earlier this week) but a good price.
Intel Core2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz 6MB L2 Cache Socket P 35W
Again, just information, I have nothing to do with the auction. I just watch for CPU's, used 6831/60's, LCD's, etc. looking for deals. That's how I got my new screen and CPU for less than $350 combined!
I hope I haven't violated any rules of use here. -
Boy I sure was tempted to put in a bid on that T9300 (it ended up selling for just $260.00), to put in my just one week old 6860.
I've been telling myself however, to wait until the new Monetevina's are released to see if the price drops.
Is it expected that the price will drop fairly soon on existing processors when the new line is released or did I make a mistake in not trying to grab that one at such a nice price (compared to newegg = $319)?
Also, do we know if these new processors will be compatible with the 6860?
Thanks for the info. -
-
well if you get the qx9300 you might be able to use it but it will downclock as it will not use its native 266mhz rather the 200mhz, but it should work. maybe a bios update from GW will ne needed ?
mind you its about the price of your 6860 -
-
You know, there's too much emphasis on upgrading and not enough on downgrading. I think im just gonna say screw it and put a nice Celeron in my 6860.
-
lol
i had an amd athalon 1800 somewhere.... -
Wow, think I'll take a pass on a new qx 9300. My main reason was asking to see how much of an impact it may have on the price of the current gen mobile processors.
Still wondering if anyone who has knowledge of the market would be able to make an educated guess as to when a drop in price on the 2x9300 would be expected.
Later this month? -
The QX9300 isn't even out yet.
-
soon enough you will see these on sale :
[email protected], 6MB L2 cache 44w
[email protected] 6MB of cache. 35w
[email protected] 6MB cache. 25w
[email protected] 3MB of cache memory. (25w?)
[email protected] and has 3MB of cache. 25 w
all 1066 MHz
the qx9300 will be probably launched later.
the direct impact of this launch on the t9300 price, is beyond me. -
Oh, wow, the t9500 uses 10 less watts than the t9300? I never knew that. Until now, I thought the t9500 was just a retardedly rich person's choice since it's only .01 GHz faster and MUCH more expensive.
-
thats not the current t9500
its the new p9500
here the full list :
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3356&p=2 -
Oh, didn't notice the P. That means this P9500 will be even MORE expensive X_X
Edit: Waitaminute, is that a desktop chip? *sigh* reading fails. -
Settle down, I think you are confusing yourself. Centrino 2 = mobile chips. That means, yes, the P9500 is a mobile chip. -
My question is this...if the sticky pads are stuck to the TOP of the heatpipe, and the whole heatpipe comes off in one assembly, why do they have to be removed only to put them back in the same spot afterwards?
I'd rather not take the chance of ripping them if I don't have to.
Can someone please enlighten me?

you dont have to remove it
but it maybe more comfortable for some. -
yeah, i just upgraded my cpu to a t9500 today and ripping off the pads is definitely not needed at all. I dont even understand how people rip the thermal pad. Just pull from the top left corner of the heatsink gently and the whole assembly comes off without any problem or damage to anything. When cleaning the heatsink and applying the compound on it again, the pads really dont get in the way at all since they're on the opposite side and not even anywhere near where you're working on the heatsink.
-
I think the thermal pad that people are ripping is the one on the Chipset not on the opposite side. I don't know what those things are. Probably there to cushion or something. The thermal pad from the chipset should be reused and not replaced with thermal paste since it will not provide sufficient cohesion to properly cool the chipset.
A thermal pad is needed -
Hey I just bought this laptop at bestbuy with the full warranty (accidental and all), and so far it seems like a great buy. I'm tempted to do the processor upgrade but the guys at bestbuy said the only way it wont void the warranty is if they do it for me. Does anyone have experience with this? I'm very tentative in buying the part and having them do it for me, do you guys think its worth it?
-
Changing processors in this computer is easier than in most desktops. It should take them about 10 minutes or less. So, sure let them do it for the warranty sake but don't have them charge you more than 30 or 40 bucks.
Or you can do it yourself and save the money and then just swap the processor back when you need to send it in for warranty work. There aren't any seals to break to get to the processor so nobody will ever know. -

Yes, there is a blue thermal pad under the Chipset Heat Sink. It can rip but if you are careful removing the heatpipe it should be fine. When I removed mine I didn't rip it but a tiny corner did fall off. No biggie. I just left the heatpad in place and used a tiny amount of thermal paste on the processor.
No heating issues yet. Some people have removed the thermal pad and replaced it with Thermal paste. Bad idea because thermal paste isn't thick enough and after things heat up it will loose cohesion and the chipset will overheat. So keep the thermal pad and if you should rip it beyond repair buy another thermal pad from Radio Shack. Do not use thermal paste on the Chipset heatsink only on the CPU -
Ok guys...
Just changed my CPU the other day to the T9300.
I have nothing to compare it too since I haven't really used this lappy until my T9300 arrived.
I finally get it about the heat pad you guys were talking about. You guys meant not to rip the pad on the chipset, and I was thinking this whole time you were talking about the 2 pads on the top of the heatpipe.
Of course I discovered this after I changed out my CPU, he he he.
My heat pipe WAS hard to get off after the screws were removed. I'm sure it was the heat pad on the chipset sticking to it in hindsight. When I finally got the pipe asssemply off, there was no heatpad stuck to it. Since I didnt' know any better to look a the chipset itself, I have no idea if it ripped or not.
Of course it's all back together now and I don't really want to take it apart again to check...
So with that I have some questions about heat.
Using HWmonitor my temps after surfing the internet for about an hour are as follows:
ACPI
TZS0 - 41C
TXS1 - 49C
CPU
core 0 - 38C
core 1 - 39C
GPU
core - 60C
HDD
hdd - 48C
Are these acceptible after surfing the net for about an hour or so?
And one more thing that is making me ask these questions in the first place...
The right side of the touch pad is noticably hotter than the left. I can feel it on my right wrist...almost to the point of me wanting to stop typing sometimes.
Is it normal for the right side of the wrist pad to be warm/hot?
Please let me know. My OCD is wanting to know if I did something wrong with this install since I never checked to see if I ripped the heatpad on the chipset, he he he.
Thanks for the help fellas...

GPU is somewhat high for simply surfing. CPU temps look good though. The reason for your warm palm rest is the fact that the HDD is mounted just below it. The HDD in the Gateway does run a tad warm.
What conditions were you using it in? -
your cpu temps look good
your gpu temp is quite high for idling, what drivers you use?
(proabaly the 177.66 with nvac.inf ?)
as to the right side of wrist pad being warm, thats where the hdd is (completely normal) -
Whew! Thanks for that. I was wondering why my right wrist was getttting warm! Speaking of hard drives, can those new WD Velociraptor's fit?
Hmm, as far as conditions go, I'm using balanced mode, although I'm plugged in right now so I don't think that is actually in effect unless you are on battery power right?
As far as video drivers go, I'm using the ones that came with the computer. It is version 7.15.11.674
Is it no good? I just did the update driver from the device manager and it said I have the latest one.
- Paulie -
I'm using stock as well, as my last attempt to update my drivers ended up me having to reload stock drivers. -
Just as a suggestion, I'm using a clean install of Vista Home Premium 32-bit, and I installed the 177.41 drivers from laptopvideo2go, and haven't had any problems yet, and I think pretty damn good FPS in games. Although they weren't technically made for mobile video cards, newer drivers *usually* have optimized code for particular games or enhancements all around, so unless you notice something off, usually newer drivers are better.... usually.
But then again, if there is no problem with the drivers you are using, don't fix what isn't broken -
Cool. I leave what I have then. Man, except for the heat under my right wrist, I love this computer. Fast as all get out.
I mainly do a lot of video editing and photo stuff, and so far Ulead's VideoStudio 11.5 Plus and Paint Shop Pro X2 are wonderful on this computer.
I think I can finally get back into animation on this lappy. My old computer couldn't even keep up with the interface using Hash Animation Master.
I think that is about to change with this lappy!
Thanks guys!
- Paulie -
Yeah I'm pretty surprised actually. I ordered a T9300 processor, but I've been using this laptop a LOT for gaming/work, Illustrator and Photoshop work, all in Vista, and it's surprisingly snappy and responsive. The 3 gigs of RAM help, but the 1.66 Ghz processor that it has right now is quite the workhorse, I'm impressed. Hopefully it does get that much better with the T9300
-
It's real hard for me to compare it to the original CPU that came with it, cause I never used it. I was waiting until my Anti Virus software arrived (ESET NOD32), which arrived at the same time as the T9300.
One thing I can't figure out though, is the HDMI port on this lappy.
I can't seem to get it to recognize my HDMI TV. I followed the instructions in the Gateway hardware guide, but windows doesn't even recognize my tv being hooked up.
Any thoughts on that one?
- Paulie -
Oops, I figured it out. Works great!
