No, I'm afraid not. However, the new iteration of the 6860FX should be able to.

Are the pix on the first post of this thread working for everyone else? If so it must be my work PC having the host site of the pictures blocked since I can't see them.

Guide looks really nice - looking forward to getting the cash to buy a T9300 as well as a couple of 7200RPM drives for RAID 0 setup.

So I already put at t9300 from a broken laptop into this p-6831 that I got for <$600 on buy.com.

Added the 250gb hard drive and a 2 gb ram module also.

Anyone know the PLL for this thing yet?

On my Asus M50 I run the t9300 up to 3.00ghz.

    Hi all,

I have a P-6860FX with the stock T5550 CPU still, and I've ordered a T9300 and Arctic Silver 5. I've never looked at, let alone change out a CPU before, so this thread has given me the confidence to do so. I only have one last question, regarding the applying of the AS5 thermal compound. Do I follow the application instructions shown by Arctic Silver's instruction pdf for Intel dual-core cpu's? I've attached a small snippet showing that part of the manual.

Thanks in advance for any help! :)

this instruction are for desktop cpu which has a much larger core heat spreader
your t9300 should be happy with a rice sized amount of paste just on the middle part, or a very thin layer evenly spread on the core heat spreader only.

Okay I'll keep that in mind... I still haven't seen how big the CPU is... so I don't have any frame of reference. That red line in the instructions appears much longer than the length of a grain of rice... :D

I haven't had time to read through the 22 pages, but should I be able to get away with the T9300 OEM + Arctic 5? Retail would just be extra money for nothing i would use?

hey everyone. I picked up my 6860FX a few months back when it first released and quickly upgraded my processor to a T9300, and it makes a big difference in gaming for sure. I used a flint-less cloth to wipe off the processor, forget the type of cleaner I used but it's the same stuff I use for my desktops, used Arctic Silver 5(not too much) and put everything back together. There are some excellent guides right here on this site with pics and all. Everything ran great for months, running Crysis and WiC and Hellgate for hours on end, but just last week I've been having sudden shut offs.

Problem I'm having now is, last week, while playing some games, and just tonight while Playing STALKER Clear Sky, my 6860 is turning off completely, no lights in the front or anything. The laptop definitely runs hot, and I need to buy some Air to blow out the vents which I suspect are starting to get a bit dirty causing a bit more heat then it should have.

Next off, can anyone suggest a good cooling pad for this lappy? There's nothing worse then having your laptop turn off right before you save :( Never had problems for months up until now, and I'm running about 65-70c the hottest during max load in games. I have noticed the air coming out of the left side vent is extremely hot, guessing that's where the GPU is blowing out. I wish there was an aftermarket cooler we could get for this laptop, I don't care how ugly it would look, just to keep these temps around 50c would be great. I guess this is what we get with Passive cooling. Does anyone know of any other cooling options out there beyond a cooling pad? Biggest problem with cooling pads is finding the right one that works best for the laptop, as the position of the fans is pretty important depending on where the GPU and CPU are...

Either way, I love this laptop and use it more then my Desktop for sure, which I built last year for gaming and now barely use it. I love being in the living room with the Wifey instead of upstairs in the office...Oh, just another thought, August/Early Sept (and the other day @100 F) are the hottest times here in the Northeast US, so I'm hoping the Fall and Winter temps will fix most of the overheating issue I'm having...

yep, I'm guessing it's an overheating issue, as it's always when it's the hottest after playinig a game for a while and the fans are at full bore...

    easy start...
1: definitely hit the vents and heat sinks with some can air first.
2: just lift the back up about 1/2 for more air flow

and if need be..you can under volt it, but the t9300 is the lowest temp cpu out. form all of what i have seen. so i would do 1 & 2 first. then game and see what happens. if it still has problems....

3:check the cpu heat sink and the pad on the northbridge right next to it. make sure the chip as an even coat of as5 or what ever you happen to use and that the pad on the northbridge is sitting even on top of the chip. and has no rips or tears in it.

I'm thinking of getting a 6860, but was wondering if I can put in a t9400 cpu? I thought I saw somewhere that only the t9300 is compatible, or perhaps I was mistaken. Thanks.

I just bought one of these (Refurb), and was wondering. The touch sensitive volume bar up the top of the keyboard, besides the + and - buttons, are the actual bars themselves meant to light up?

If someone who owns this laptop could open up the CPU heatsink cover and tell me where to plug the CPU fan into, that'd be great. As mine came with it unplugged :(

what do you mean it came unplugged??? and that cable can only go to one spot...just move the cable around to see how far it reaches...

looking for my 6860 screen shots..

this is a 7811fx, but the fan stuff is the same as the 6860/6831. you may beable to take out a few of the case screws and lif it up high enough to just plug it back in... (speculation of course)

Thanks for the help, I had to completely dis-assemble it, taking out all of the case screws, the monitor, keyboard and such to get to the plug. Some genius who was assembling it routed the cable for the CPU fan to the wrong side of the motherboard.

God. I've read this guide like 100 times, and I think I may just bite the bullet now with my tax money and upgrade my 6860FX to the T9300.

Is there a better CPU now?

(Also, this thing needs to be stickied already...lol)

It is time i FINALLY upgraded the CPU.

how much different are the T9300 and the T9500??

This is for the P3831FX by the way..

and the prices on these CPU's are still pretty high......all I find on ebay are over $200+...is that the normal price of these processors?

    Hi,

I just followed the instructions to upgrade my M-6873h to a T9300 and couldn't be happier with the result.

MY WEI (yes, I understand that this isn't a very reliable benchmarking tool) score went from 4.5 to 5.1 - as others have noted, the CPU upgrade also upgraded my RAM's score.

    Many thanks!

    Aplinex,

You upgraded your CPU in your 6860 to a T9300. I have had the 6860 for a good year and a half now and am wondering if I could upgrade it to a Quad Core Processor? Would upgrading the CPU to a quad core work with this laptop the same as your guide?

negative. the intel quad core mobile processors run on a different chipset than the one that is in the 6831/6860 FX.

the quad core processors dont even work in the 7811/7801/7805 due to the heatsink not being large enough to cover up the processor die.

Let me just say that the T9300 is a pretty nice processor. I just undervolted mine a CRAZY amount, from 1.375 to 0.9750, and it's stable. Also overclocked the 8800m GTS from 500/799 to 600/900, more than I was expecting. Ran Orthos and rthdribl for 8 hours and no problems, CPU was at 58C and video was at 74C. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner....

Not sure I would do this. This might exagerrate the temp swing issue that supposedly causes these processors to become defective.

Actually it looks like the defect affected even later version 9800M chips: http://www.pureoverclock.com/story2777.html. It depends on when your chip was made.

The notebook card defect almost exclusively effected the 8600 chip.
