i would stick to the t9300 just in case

Meh, fair enough... it's the same price and you're only losing 100Mhz for the security that it FOR SURE works... I know, I have a T9300 in mine
http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?name=T9300 -
It worked and it's a huge upgrade. Took warcraft from a 20 frame per second slide show to a solid 45-60.
Very happy with it -

Right, they added it to all the quests text!

:O
And that stresses the video card? -

I finally got to use the instructions in this post and I couldn't be happier!
Now I have a T9300 purring along in my lappy and everything is running nice and smooth. I was a little worried at first, because one of the screws wanted to strip, but I used a little more pressure on it then I was comfortable with and it worked out just fine. I played about 30 - 45 minutes of UT3 and it was nice and smooth, with no issues. I plan to boot up the laptop when I get home from work tomorrow and use it as much as possible to make sure everything is good to go. I've definitely breathed a little new life into a year old laptop... -
Congratulations burnette. I bet all your games run smoother now huh. You should get like 10 or more FPS boost in most if not all your games. And no more stuttering at all.
Ahh the wonders of CPU upgrading. And the 6860 after a T9300 upgrade really turns it into a brand new system. Much faster and just feels more powerful LOL. Love my laptop always will. Hope everyone upgrades they're CPUs. -
Check the benchmarks in my sig, the T9300 is pretty comparable to the X7800 so it should be similar results.
-
Thanks guys. I'm very pleased thus far with the upgrade. I was a little worried at first, as I've upgraded hundreds of desktop machines but this was the first time I've upgraded a laptop. Everything went fairly smooth though and I've been using the laptop as much as possible since the upgrade to make sure there are no issues. I was having problems running UT3 smoothly before the upgrade and now it's playing nice and smooth at max res, so I think the upgrade did the trick. I use this laptop mostly for LAN parties, so I'm hoping the new processor will keep it useful for the next year or two. So far I'm thinking it will. This was a great thread and I probably wouldn't have attempted the upgrade without it...

Hey, quick question. I pulled down HWMonitor to monitor my temps. What should I be worried about in regards to the GPU temps? I've seen it hit as high as 66 degrees celcius already and wasn't sure what was fine and what I should worry about. Thanks.
-
Thanks for the guide. Now, I need to find a CPU for my 6831.
-
yeah I'm looking for t9300 aswell.
-
I've got a P-6860fx with the stock CPU and stock 4gb RAM. I'm thinking about upgrading to the p9500 cpu.
I have a few questions:
1)I noticed this cpu has a 1066mhz fsb, does that mean i should upgrade my RAM as well?
2) If so, what RAM is compatible?
3) also, if i wanted to upgrade to a 7200rpm Harddrive... is there an easy way to add the new 7200rpm drive. Make it the primary, somehow copy all of my info, installed applications, my documents, settings etc.. over to the 7200rpm and revert my current HD to a backup? -
1066mhz CPU's won't work....
Also, there are two hard drive slots... -
-
Everyone pretty much touched on it. When I picked up the 6860 last year, I upgraded to a T9300, which I would recommend, and I picked up a 320gig 7200rpm harddrive for the empty second harddrive bay. This thing has been great to say the least.

Because the motherboard on the P-6860's is a Santa Rosa based chipset, and only uses CPU's up to 800mhz fsb
-
Actually, just found a T-9500 selling for $260 vs T-9300 selling for $336 - I'll go with the t-9500 -
After I upgrade to the T-9500 is it worth it to upgrade the RAM to 800mhz?
I.E The: 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
If it's even possible to upgrade to this? -

this will work with my 6860 right? i was also wondering if the 6mb cache on the t9300 vs the 4mb cache on the x7800 will make a difference? i want to upgrade to play source games smoother. -

The T9300 will run much cooler than the X7800 because one is 65nm and the other is 45nm.
I say it's worth getting the T9300 over the X7800. -
If you want to overclock, go for an Extreme chip, if not, the T9300 will run cool and be plenty fast.

If you want to overclock, get an X9000 (45nm).
The X7800 is 65nm, so I would expect it to be too hot.
But I guess if it's cold right now, you might want to use it as a heater -
thanks for the tips guys. i'll be looking for a t9300. also the prices on the x9000 is too much for me.
-
looks like a great guide and i just got my t9300, but where are the pictures? I dont want to screw up my $200 purchase
-
-
try ebay. just purchase from a seller that has a good feedback rating.
-
just installed my X9000. im running stress tests right now and will post results later.
-
Best chip you can get, nice one.
-
wow i am really happy with my x9000. max temps for the cpu overclocked at 3.0 GHz is 55c and idles around 30c. i have not undervolted yet. all of my games minimum fps has gone way up. on the dirt 2 benchmark with stock cpu i got 25 fps minimum and 30 fps average. with the x9000 i get 30 fps minimum and 36 fps average. all my source games play really well now. counter strike: source plays at 100+ fps even on 30 player servers, and tf2/l4d2 never go below 40 fps.
-
What did you end up paying for the x9000? I am trying to get a t9500 for 200 and under. I just let an x7900 go for 202.50 on ebay, I probably should have grabbed that but I hear they get a lot hotter then the t9500's. Can we p6831-fx owners overclock the x7900s? I know we can overclock the x9000's to 3.0ghz, but what about the x7800/7900 chips?
-
i got my x9000 for $350. you can probably find a t9300 for under $200. you can overclock the x7900 but it is a 65nm and will get hot.
-
I'm bidding on a t9500 currently but its at 200. I really wanted to stay at 200 and under. But if I can grab it for 210 and under I probably will =D.

I would love to use this guide to upgrade my p6860, but the pictures are gone.

part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwwdWWVdIhU&feature=related
only diference with the 6860 is the four cpu screws around the heat sink will come all the way out so be careful. -
Great. Also wondering if AS5 will be sufficient or if I should use ICD7 when putting in the new processor.
-
AS5 is good but icd 7 is better. icd 7 is also much thicker and can but used as a thermal pad replacement on the chipset.
-
Hmmm... I'll probably go with ICD7 then. I hear it is very easy to damage the chipset thermal pad when replacing the CPU.
