I'm a novice on computers, so please excuse my ignorance.

What should I do as soon as I receive this laptop? So far I understand I should run furmark and do stress testing.

What else should I check for? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Stress the CPU with OCCT and check for dead pixels with DPB.

Also check the CD/DVD and speakers are working properly.

I have to ask about this...
I'm looking at my invoice right now and my SN looks nothing like that.

It's nearly identical to the MPN (Manufacturer's Part Number?) actually.

I just got my invoice... I think I've got the early batch with the 1920x1200 screen! Please feel free to burst my bubble if I'm completely wrong haha.

Well, I guess the only way I'm going to find out is when it shows up at my door in a few hours. :D

I guess UPS decided to pick up the pace.

Are you kidding? thats wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too hot for a laptop GPU... you should be looking to get to 80 degrees MAX. I hope you didn't damage your computer.

Anyone have good instructions/methods on what to say the the Tigerdirect rep when exchanging or returning the laptop? I don't think anything is wrong with mine in particular aside from that the GPU hit 86 degrees after 10 minutes of furmark :[

That article is from July 2, 2008 and most of the posts are in June and July of 2008.

Just scanning, I see no mention of the 9800M GTS or Gateway FX P-78xx's.

Do we have anything more recent that shows that NVidia is still having a problem with it's current notebook GPUs?

He actually could be right but not for the reason in the old article. The latest drivers v185.85 have been known to cause artifacts, even when only in windows. This has even been discussed on nVidias own forums. Try some older drivers.

    Gateway P-7805u FX Refurbished Notebook PC - Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 2.26GHz, 4GB DDR3, 320GB, DVDRW, 17” WXGA+, Vista Home Premium 64-bit

I'm not sure about the screen, mew1838, but

    the Gateway P-78 series user guides are h e r e.

Page 88 of the 8513212 - Gateway Notebook Reference Guide with eRecovery R0 describes the process for making the Restore Disks.

Making backups is as easy as a few button clicks and inserting 3 cd's.

As far as the screen goes, I think you've got the 1440x900 screen. Its not for sure, but don't be disappointed if it isn't the 1900x1200 screen :D.

your right I saw some artifacts a couple of times while browsing the internet and then the display drivers restarted... I am ignoring it for now but I might revert to 182.xx if this keeps happening and annoys me..

Yea man I am currently using the 185.85 and I am having some artifacts show up on me a couple of times between yesterday and today... they last a few seconds then the display drivers restart. Besides the annoyance everything works fine... It helps to set the refresh rate to 60 for some reason. Btw I have the 1920x1200 LG screen, running OC @ 716/936/1750.

I just got my refurb 7805u last night and it looks immaculate, not a scratch on it anywhere. Ended up with the 1440x900 screen which isn't a big deal to me.

First thing I did was run Prime95 which got the CPU up 60 degrees, everything seemed fine when all of a sudden it started emitting a bunch of random beeps, blue screened, and rebooted. I thought it was odd since 60 degrees is well within spec for this processor.

Next, I fired up Furmark which got the GPU up to 76 degrees. Again, everything was going well, all temps seemed fine when all of a sudden the beeping returned, blue screened again, and another reboot.

I figured I would go ahead and burn the recovery discs so I started that up. I was able to get the first disc burned before I got more beeping and a blue screen during the verification process.

I'm currently running memtest to rule out any memory issues, but it's been running for 1.5 hours so far with no errors found. My next course of action is to try out a different HDD to see if that helps at all, but I'm at a loss if that doesn't do the trick.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

Hey alitunay, so if my SN is 13851 - is it WUXGA? I ask because I'm sending back one that had a SN of 13850 and is WUXGA and one SN 139 and is WXGA+. Going back because the WUXGA has the "ghosting" issue that I can't shake and the 139 keeps bluescreening despite OS reinstall. Tigerdirect is shipping me replacements but only show me 1 SN in the invoice screen and it's 13851.

    Thanks.

Again, you can't be too certain that your 138 will be the WUXGA screen. I'm pretty confident that it is.. purely based on gut instinct. lol :p

Guys...The refurbished ones have a 90 day warranty. But I'm guessing that Gateway won't honor the ones from ebay sellers? Also...anyone here know of any sellers that test the notebooks prior to selling them?

Tiger Direct doesn't have any in stock unfortunately.

For those that have returned their laptops to tigerdirect, do you get another 30days to return your replacement, or does it still have to be 30 days from the purchase of the original one?

    thanks alot!

Who said that you won't get the warranty for the computers purchased from ebay? Gateway does not require receipt for warranty. Also ownership is not an issue since each computer is warrantied by itself regardless of the owner (unlike dell where you have to transfer the ownership to get the warranty). Also one other thing. Historically it has been proven that Gateway warranty even covers the computers that are upgraded as long as the part that fails is not the upgraded part itself. I accept that their customer service people are clueless about their product but the service they provide is much better than the some other guys.

Is it just the 7805u's that are a problem, or are the refurb 7811's afflicted too?

Go to gateway website and check out what warranty your computer has via your serial number.
