the frys post is the same as a p-7908u FX. 220 bucks more for the larger drive is a ripoff. I tried to email gateway, but you can't email them unless you possess a product with a serial number...

I put my order in on the day it was put on on BestBuy.com and they probably got a lot more orders than they received, so I probably got first dibs.

I purchased mine on 11-2. I received shipment confirmation email on 11-11. I should receive my laptop on 11-17. I am a bit upset that some of you are getting yours at the store. I think they should refund my shipping...Especially after waiting so long for shipment. I do like that someone took BB up on their offer to buy a different product---and returned it! It serves BB right for pulling this backorder CRAP!

I ordered mine express because I needed to send it to my parents to pick up on Thanksgiving, but its being delivered there today. I was worried it wouldn't be shipped until Thanksgiving week. I ordered mine 11/5/09 so I bet they are fullfilling orders as they come in and won't change web to in stock until they are done with preorders.

Well, I'm not holding my breath. They told me it will arrive in store on 11/17, but when the attendant checked their stock, the only evidence of the system even existing in their system was what we see on the website. They had 0 in stock, of course, 0 in transit, etc.

So I am hoping, hoping that it will arrive at the store on 11/17, but with the glaring "backordered" disclaimer on the site, I kind of expect the worst >/

If anyone receives theirs, by all means, let us know. That way we'll atleast be able to confirm [the notebook's] existence!

I'm not looking at the P7908u (New Egg) and the P7915u (Best Buy)'s specs side by side, but it looks like the only difference is that the one on NewEgg has a 500 GB hard drive. Is that what the $100 price bump is for?

Don't forget; there's no tax at Newegg unless you live in New Jersey, California, or Tennessee. For me, that bumps the price up $75 and you're dealing with Best Buy not Newegg. I'll probably go for the Newegg model. Also, some places have the 7908u listed as having a LED screen. (Amazon and Frys)

Price out a 500GB HD and see how much it is :p plus as Jesus said no tax in most states. Not sure if BB charges shipping but newegg does.

Hm, most of NewEgg's 500GB 5400 RPM 2.5" drives are 89.00, and I guess that the 7908u is only $50 above MSRP, so you're right, that's pretty reasonable.

In other news, it looks like the BestBuy status has changed from backordered to available online, and they have images of the unit now! I checked the estimated shipping time if I were to order today, and it showed 11/18-11/23, so I think we're good to go.

The one major bonus from buying at Bestbuy is being able to return it if there was an issue or you were not happy .. They may whack you with a 15% restocking fee but in some cases that beats no returns like Newegg..

I'm not gonna lie Twiggle; I loled when I saw how you abbreviated my name. :p But looking at the return policy that does kind of scare me. I'd really like to be able to try out the laptop before using it, but I don't know of any places with the item in store, except maybe Frys but there's none around me. Does anyone know where I could try it out or if there are any good reviews of it?

Just to let you know J.F., when I put my order in for the 7915u at BestBuy for instore pickup, I voiced the same concern about not being able to preview the product before buying. With that taken into account, they agreed to waive any restocking fees, should I dislike the item after checking it out over 14 days.

I looked over reviews for other P-series 7xxx models, since they apparently share a lot of the same componenets model to model.

Thanks, I'll have to check with my Best Buy about that. I have checked reviews for the 78xx series before but I'm afraid there may be some big difference we don't know about yet. Also, do any of you guys think someone would bite if I offered my P-7908u I might buy from Newegg for around $1050 in the BST forum? That would be kind of like a restocking fee for Newegg for me.

Newegg allows returns. I've done returns with them. In fact, they're really easy to do returns with.

Newegg's return policy is fantastic. My wife just said "Even I know that." She's far from the computer geek that her hubby is.

So... Please don't spread that particular bit of misinformation.

ROFL please dont tell me what i myself already know and have dealt with...

Go read there return policy ...

Just because you have been able to return something does not mean that everyone can...

It states very clear that any open laptop is NOT returnable....

Quadzilla's right. If you look at the product page for the P-7908u it says exchange only, no refunds. If only you were right, Gilmour... They do have a great return policy for a lot of their stuff but not their laptops. I decided that if I don't like mine I'll sell on the BST forum here.

Alright. That's a good little piece of information. I just read the policy. It seems as though exchanges are kosher, though.

I'm kinda surprised Best Buy's policy isn't similar.

To be honest, I think the reason for their policy may be because people will register a Windows installation/key to their name and thus they don't want people frivolously returning computers and rendering the returned product a pain to do anything with.

    "Shiny and working" sounds promising.

Hopefully it won't have much more "bloatware" than the 7800 series did. Shouldn't take you too long to uninstall the stuff that you don't want/need.

Ah, it had a bit of bloatware. Norton trial, MS Office trial, CD burning utilities, and some Gateway junk to name a few. Took me minutes to get some of the glaringly obvious garbage uninstalled. Though this was all during my lunch break at work, so I'm sure I missed some of the fat that needs trimming.

I do that as "Step One", especially on notebooks. I replace Adobe Reader with Foxit Reader, too. No background drain on the system with Foxit.

Next step, in my opinion, is to replace the AV and AS program that you discard with whatever is your favorite in that area. Lots of good, free stuff to choose from. Whichever you choose, it'll need to update itself.

I've installed Microsoft's free Security Essentials. It certainly doesn't seem to have any effect on the speed or performance of Win 7, and the reviews seem to support it as being a reasonable package, especially for the price - "free"!

Then, sit back and let Win 7 update itself. Might require a few re-boots, but letting that settle out will help avoid any other problems with software installs. Win 7 will (should) also update any drivers at this stage, too.

At this point, making the backup/restore DVDs also makes sense. At least, that's what I did with my 7805, and I didn't have any problem creating the disks that I've read others experienced.

I believe, somewhere on this board, is a more detailed suggestion/recommendation for setting up notebooks. Much better than my suggestions, I suspect.

Mine came to me via UPS as promised. It is indeed shiny. I likey! It does work, and I must say what a breath of fresh air WIN 7 is. Easy setup(even if you don't need any help in that area) was nice to come home to after a long hard day. Yes, there's plenty of unwanted apps to clean out. That's for tomorrow. I'll be interested to see how it works in the REAL test-- WWIIOnline Battlefield Europe. I'm used to Ultra SCSI Cheetahs and heavy oc-ing of cpu and gpu. It will be nice to forego the watercooling etc. Even without all that hardware my initial impression is that this is a competently fast machine as equipped. There's really only one thing I'd still wish for: a backlit set of keys. Okay, time to resume updates and installs!

No Win7 dvd. You have to make a backup image-- I was prompted at one point to create one.
Also, the heat question was answered by the kind gent who reviewed his 7908u. He stated that under load of 3DMark a peak of 71 C was reached. I didn't get a chance to really shake her down last nite, but I will tonite, and I will relay my results.
    Also, no bluetooth.

Okay, so I was expecting to be slobbering happy to come home from work tonight to my new P-7915u FX (ordered on the 14th), until I got an email at 11am today saying that my order was cancelled. They were "unable to successfully process the payment."

REALLY???? THE DAY I'M EXPECTING IT TO ARRIVE??? Somebody at Best Buy is sure going to hear about this.

Are they matching the advertised specs? Or are they Over spec like the first 7805's?

Also how did you pick one up in best buy hyouriittai? I really want to get one, w/o the shipping. Also the cheaper warranty.. the online warranty is inflated price compared to the instore...

Too bad I don't know anywhere to get a 3rd party warranty that is good and cheap.

yes, its interesting how fresh they are. I will be looking into that. Xotic pc (sager) has a great explanation of the laptop supply chain... Check it out. Believe me, Best Buy will be hearing from me about all the backorder nonsense, and some folks ordering instore for instore pickup. Still, I like the laptop, just not the ride I went on with BB.

    Mandabar,
I called them up and just gave them the SKU from the website, and they said they could order it to the store. The great thing is, didn't have to pay for shipping, as it was an "In Store Pick Up".

You may be able to do this through the online system. I think there is an option for that. Good luck!

The option for in-store pickup was not available on Best Buy's website.

I had to re-order this, except this time with EXPRESS shipping ($35). I think it's absurd that Best Buy would wait to charge a credit card until right before the item is shipped out; The fact I was expecting it the same day it was supposed to be shipped makes it even worse!

Either way, I called beforehand to arrange store pick-up, and I was told it was not possible and had to be done completely online and shipped to my door.

...Saturday at the earliest :( I need this for work, so it looks like the remainder of my week will be extremely unproductive.

If this notebook is all it's cracked up to be, I should have a blast.... This will be my first computer with dedicated graphics!

In my experience, Best Buy has been a terrible distributor for this computer.

You just complained about everything that every retailer has done to prevent people from complaining that their cards are charged without the product being shipped. The problem this was intended to rectify was that some retailers that are no longer with us would charge the card, never ship, and then sudden disappear. There really aren't many retailers that I can think of that charge first and ship later.

On top of that... What problem did they have with the payment? Sounds to me like your card was declined for payment... Which means unavailable funds... Which is certainly not BestBuy's fault.

On top of that... What was your belief that it was supposed to arrive today based upon? Were you sent a shipping confirmation? A tracking number? It sounds to me like you were pinning your hopes upon vapor.

I ordered my laptop on October 25th. I received it today after it was shipped on November 11th. I knew that the laptop was backordered when I ordered it, so it would be a while.

Either way, I'm typing from my P-7915u as we speak. I'm not a fan of BestBuy, but I really can't complain.

The laptop is in stock, as it was when I first ordered it. I selected expedited shipping so I could have it by the end of the week (It stated either the 18th or the 19th for arrival), because I need this laptop for work (the computers here aren't capable of handling my enormous multitasking). I ordered it on the 14th. About 11am on the 18th, I received an e-mail saying that my order was canceled...

Despite my efforts in calling to retry the card (which has a sky high limit and nearly zero balance), they would not allow me to do it and instead replace the order online with a later shipping date.

If the card was charged as soon as I placed the order (as opposed to right before they throw it on the truck, or whenever they decide to), I would have time to fix the issue and at least replace the order sooner, which is important especially if the item is prone to selling out. Whether the card is charged immediately after the order is placed or minutes prior to shipping, what would it matter, regarding consumers' online safety?

And I wasn't even allowed to order over the phone through my local Best Buy. So if I hear again the card is denied (for whatever reason it may be), I have to place the order again and wait another shipping term?

As you can tell, I am extremely impatient and just want my shiny new toy!
