Okay, I hope posting this here is okay. Since there are people here with the Gateway P6831 FX, can anybody suggest a good backpack for this laptop? I really don't want an oversize backpack but it's starting to look like I don't have a choice. Any suggestion would be appreciated. If you got one let me know what brand and what you think of your backpack. Due to the battery sticking out I'm not sure what would fit best for this.
-
I work at Best Buy and personally, I picked up a GA-7316-06F00 Swiss Gear IBEX Laptop Backpack. Though if you don't care for the design, you could always go looking on ebags dot com. They have a great selection.
FYI, the 6831 FX fits perfectly in the IBEX backpack with the battery still on. It's a snug fit on the top, but not to the point of concern. -
I use the Wengar Pegasus. The battery has to be removed for it to fit, but it is the smallest backpack I found that it would fit in. The quality is excellect and it feels lighter than expected.

This is the Ultimate Laptop bag SLAPPA V2 Velocity SPYDER Laptop Backpack I have both the Gateway P6831 FX and Satellite X205-SLi1 this Backpack can hold both with no Problems and im able to place Both AC Adapters and Still have Room for other stuff

First off Thanks everyone~!
Do you think the bag is to big? I'm a skinny guy and about 5'6. I don't want to look like I'm caring a a small child on my back
This looks awesome, you are right. I like the small profile it has. How does it feel on your back?
Is this really big? I was looking for something small. -
Its a little smaller than the Swiss bag I had the same one when i bought for the Toshiba X205 about 2 months later I realize the bag was small for the 17". I was just like you looking for a bag for the Gateway .This Review convinced me all the way to get this Trust me dude you will not be Disappointed im still amazed that i still have room for both my wireless XBOX 360 controllers
Its not big just has deep pockets and alot of protection
check this review out
I place more stuff than he did

Anybody have any suggestions on a hard shell case for the P-6831FX with battery attached (seems it would be annoying to have to remove it every time I put the notebook away)? I'm looking for exceptional protection and room for various other items such as power brick, mouse, folders, calculator, pens, etc....basically a briefcase replacement for a mobile (my truck lol) field office.
Most I've looked at online seem to only have a velcro strap to hold the laptop in place, I'd want something more secure and offering better drop protection. Might have to go with one of the Otterbox/Pelican style generic boxes with the tearout foam to size it for the laptop (in a sleeve), but then I'd still need my briefcase for my other office type items. I'm carrying too many job related items in my cab as it is, I'd rather not add to the quantity. -
Always loved the Mountain Hardware packs, The best quality I've seen, and top cool factor! Made by a top outdoors equipment maker. http://www.mountainhardwear.com/Subcategory.aspx?viewAll=false&top=1246&cat=1272&viewAll=false

Maybe this link will help http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=50734 It's just annoying because the battery sticks out so it's hard to find an exact case/sleave.
-
anyone know of a good sleeve?
-
Try Tom Binn but with the laptop battery sticking out, I'm not sure how good a sleeve would be.
-
-
I got this one:
http://www.ebags.com/jansport/lap_station_special_buy/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=109781
It works GREAT. I'm very happy with it. -
I orderd the swiss gear carbon. will let you know how it works out. have a shockproff sleeve on the way hope it fits the battery in it too.
-
I also had to get a backpack for this laptop aswell. I was on a budget and got a Targus 17" XL for $55 total with shipping. It is pretty nice. I think the laptop section could have used a bit more padding on the bottom, but that isn't anything I can't fix. There is a ton of space in the backpack and it is quite big. It fits the notebook battery and all.
-
This is the sleeve I bought...
http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Neopre...4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1203319132&sr=8-4
Fits the lappie really well, even with the battery still on. It also goes with the colors of it quite well! -
I just got the Slappa Velocity Spyder backpack, I love it. Crazy Jay thanks for the help~!
-
I really wanted a Tom Bihn brain cell for my P-6831fx but they don't have one big enough. The closest they have is the 2XL horizontal brain cell but you would have to adjust the sling to allow the laptop to fit and only without the battery. I wish I had the tolerance to take off the battery and put it back on every time I get it out or put it away into the brain cell but I can't do that. That would annoy me very quickly. I think I'll have to side with Lights and Crazy Jay and pick up the Slappa bag. I think I prefer the Matrix backpack over the Spyder just for the design. I don't think they are different otherwise.
-
I go thte swiss gear carbon. fits notebook with battery and had tons of other space. actually matches the laptop somewhat too. gonna sew my own sleeve foe it. more of a liner for the backpack.
-
Yeah I wanted a nice sleeve also, Fyredragon has a nice suggestion. The Slappa Spyder backpack comes with it's own built in notebook sleeve. It fits the laptop but the sleeve is built into the bag.
-
A great deal on the Slappa Spyder

Careful there are 2 versions out there, I was worried about that so I didn't order from any sites that doesn't state the SKU.
SKU should be SL-LP-19B which is the 2nd version, the first version wasn't that great. -
I noticed that, I will let you know when I get it
, either way its like half price
-
Screw it. I bought one too. At the price I can't pass it up and all the 17" backpacks I see at the stores are at least $70. Even if this one is the older version, I'm sure it's still better than the ones at the stores.
-
Well I too, like the BB guy on page 1, went with the Swiss Gear IBEX Laptop Backpack. A Shade under 100 at BB, pricey compared to eBay, however; the instant gratification is nice.
Anyway this is the most I've ever paid for a backpack, but at least a factor of 2, but this thing is N!i!C!E!!! The P6831FX (as noted) fits perfectly, the corners are a teeny tiny snug but seriously nothing to worry about, pockets galore, and the BIGGEST reason I don't even mind the 100 price tag is it's sturdy. This laptop is BIG, and HEAVY, sure there are others out there that are bigger and heavier, but when you load the laptop and your stuff into the bag you may be a tad worried it'll give way. Not with this one. She's got VERY solid construction, well built, no half-arsed corners cut and then tucked away in side the bag, this is easily the best backpack I've ever bought.
And there is, again, a TON of extra room. VERY happy with it. -
http://www.amazon.com/Slappa-Velocity-Matrix-Laptop-Backpack/dp/B000G0OQUY#moreAboutThisProduct
Amazon has the Slappa Velocity Pro Spyder bag for a good deal also. I don't know if it's the newer model of the two though. -
I got mine here http://www.buy.com/prod/slappa-spider-notebook-backpack/q/loc/101/205000286.html for 63.99
Ignore the fact that it's not called spyder but spider on their site but it is the right model since I bought from them and just received it.
Hope this helps, if someone finds it for a lower price share
-
Is the sleeve on the Slappa Spyder just a cushion or does it have a a hard lining in it to offer more protection? Do you feel like the laptop is protected well in the backpack?
-
Has any one gotten a normal bag for this laptop? I don't want anything to big, but not to small. I want enough space for the lappy and mouse.
-
If you want a messenger style bag axio has some nice bags. The sling bag or the courier case I believe both can hold 17in laptops.
http://www.axio-usa.com/ -
The Slappa Spyder has two cushioned areas for lapstops looking at their pictures.
http://www.slappa.com/site/velocity.html -
There are 2 sections you can put your laptop in, but only the back has a built in sleeve. You are correct though, both sections are cushioned.
-
I'm still debating on what bag I want to get. I'm leaning towards getting a backpack but I don't really like the design that much of the Slappa Spyder/Matrix backpacks.
Booq carries some nice looking backpacks but are much more expensive.
The have the Python XL http://www.booqbags.com/s.nl/it.A/id.107/.f?sc=11&category=-111
and then the Boa 3L, but the size might not be big enough. I've emailed them to see if the fitment would be okay since its only off by a 1/2 inch.
http://www.booqbags.com/s.nl/it.A/id.298/.f?sc=11&category=-111
I'll keep everyone updated on whether or not the bag will work for it. I'm crossing my fingers that it will because I love the look of it. -
I received an email from booq saying that the laptop should fit since it's only a half inch off. He said the bag can stretch some so it should have a snug fit. I will probably order the bag within the next week and give you all some more info.
-
I got mine in today. I don't know if its the older version or not, but this thing is great. The laptop fits perfectly and feels like it's actually padded. There's a ton of room. While I miss the side pockets on my IGIO backpack, this thing is great for when I'm out of town two or three days at a convention and feel safe about the padding. Plus it came with three locks and the cell phone holder is cool too.
Now I'm just wondering how it'll feel on my back during 100 degree heat. -
Mine comes on Wednesday, does it have room for other stuff too, like, a mouse, keyboard?
-
sure does
-
Thank you, its a great deal
-
I believe an easy way to tell if it has 2 rubber bottom you have version b. If you have 1 rubber bottom you have the original release. Either way the aslong as you're happy.
-
It has one rubber bottom, but I don't care. I actually like the feeling that my laptop is safely padded and secure.
The straps are nice too, and the laptop doesn't feel as heavy like it did with my old backpack. -
I'm looking for a backpack/sling bag that's just slim enough to hold a 6831 and some small stuff. I'm thinking of getting a belkin sling bag. I know it's rated for 15" laptops but it has a notebook compartment of 17x11.5x2, and p6831 is 15.75x11.75(12.5 w/ battery)x1.7
Do you guys think the compartments' width could still stretch for that extra inch with the battery on? It's gonna be quite the bother if I had to take out the battery every time I put it in. If not, could you suggest a bag that's fit for me.
I'm a bit small to lug around a 17" messenger bag. And most 17" laptop backpacks are just too big for me. -
Well, if you like that bag you should email them directly to see if fitment is possible. Otherwise, I've also been on a quest for bags that fit the P-6831fx. Here's a few links you should check out.
The dimensions on this bag are on .5 in. short on length. I've emailed them about another bag that has the same issue and they told me it would stretch the extra bit needed. But, I'd still email them again on this one to be sure. I can't guarantee fitment, they can though.
http://www.booqbags.com/s.nl/it.A/id.295/.f?sc=2&category=1868
And, Axio has two bags that might fit the P-6831fx. In the softpacks section they have listed a sling bag and a courier case. The sling bag shows no internal specs and the courier case does but I'm not sure if it's internal or external measurements.
http://www.axio-usa.com/
Otherwise, I'm guessing it's going to be hard to find a small bag for the P-6831fx's size. I've searched and that's all that I know of that might help you out. Hopefully someone else will have more input for you. -
i got a messenger bag for my laptop from targus. It won't hold a lot of stuff because the laptop is sooo freakin huge.
-
http://www.ebags.com/ebags/macroloader/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=59045
I know for a fact the laptop fits and its a nice bag... $71.99 on sale right now.... -
So what do you think of it? I wish it had better side pockets and I don't care for the front zipper pocket, but it sure is comfortable and the laptop is held really secure.
-
I just got it, Its a really nice backpack, plenty of room, comes with a matching cell phone holder, and three combo locks to lock the three back compartments. all for $37.69, what a awsome deal

I really like the Belkin 17in. messenger bag! I just don't like the colors so much. Especially since the 17in bag only has red/black and brown/blue. I'm thinking about getting the red/black messenger bag.
Exterior: 14 x 17 x 5
Notebook Compartment: 13 x 16 x 2

with the laptop being heavy, getting a backpack is recommended compared to slings/messenger bags. that way the weight would be equally distributed to your shoulders. with slings, you are going to have problems in the long run.
i ordered the slappa spyder too. it's going to arrive on monday. im excited. it should pretty well accomodate the Saitek Eclipse keyboard i just bought (i don't like the FX's placement of the FN key-- weird coz it's supposed to be gamercentric) -
Ok if you want to look like a typical european tourist lol. Think I'd prefer to look cool thanks. I love the Booq Slimcase XXL but I emailed Booq customer services and they said the P-171 would not fit with the protruding battery installed. Think I'm going to risk it and order one anyway. Worst case scenario will have to take the battery off and store in front compartment, but I reckon it will stretch enough - 0.5" - to fit nice and snug. Got price down to $125 too
Thanks for the Booq headsup by the way. -
That bag is amazing. Please post pics once you get it. If it fits properly I will order one on the spot. Otherwise, I might order the slim battery so that it would fit a bag like this no problem.
