EDIT: 1/28/08. All, Please do not PM me for support. This laptop came across my workbench one day 3 months ago and I have not seen it since!! As much I would like to help, being I do not physically have one of these machines, there is little I can do to help you! I took a minute to went through everyones efforts to resolve any issues they went through in their own experiences!
It appears, KIRA64, has created a downloadable ZIP of all the drivers required for the T1616 to run under XP. I'm moving it above my suggestions so you have multiple methods to try!
Hey all,
I just went through the process of upgrading the T1616 to Windows XP. Here is the driver list I used! My company seems to now be in the rollback business, just FYI: Toshiba Vista, generally good... IBMs, forget it... Too many drastic differences in motherboard/SATA components to make them fully functional.
Please BACKUP before you try anything! I tested stability for all of 30 minutes before posting! System restore is a great tool to use while tinkering with drivers
Video:
There is a Radeon xpress1270 driver for Windows XP on the dell website. LatitudeD531 ships in either Vista or XP form.
Try the link: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...cetag=&SystemID=LAT_D531&hidos=WLH&hidlang=en
or support.dell.com
*Do not run the installer.... Unzip the package, then start your hardware wizard, manually install the drivers by visiting C:\dell\drivers\R163694\Driver\2KXP_inf\ select c2_52348
Audio: Sigmatel Audio Same goes for Audio. The Dell Latitude D531 ships with both Vista/Windows XP pro.
Link: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...cetag=&SystemID=LAT_D531&hidos=WLH&hidlang=en
*EDIT* This driver seemed to be an issue: Try download the RealTek HD audio package here
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...=3&GetDown=false#High Definition Audio Codecs
Pointing devices: Download the Sinaptics driver directly from the Synaptics website
http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm
LAN: Realtek RTL8139 family fast Enternet NIC Don't quote me on this one, I forgot the site I downloaded it... but I believe I pulled it directly from Realtek
link http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...L)+/RTL8139D(L)/RTL8100(L)/RTL8130/RTL8139B(L)
WIFI: Realtek TRL8187b Wireless 54mbps, I belive the above driver package had the driver... I could not find a Gateway Wireless Manager that would work... you'll have to use the builtin with Windows XP.
Chipset: This is listed as "UNKNOWN DEVICE" in the maintaince window in XP. The Vista driver did work, but I had to guess a few times before I found out which "UNKNOWN DEVICE" was actually the chipset (PCIE) note: I found bootup times to be very sluggish after updating.
EDIT Do not install the chipset Drivers!! Very unstable, I;ll repost if I find something different that works.
Webcam/Camera Assistant. Vista Drivers from Gateway.com work
Well that should be enough to get it up and running, I did not bother to test HDMI... but the ATI Hi-DEF codecs did install for it.
-
I recommend NOT to follow the instructions above.
Chipset drivers are on the ATI/AMD website and YES install them.
Offical X1270 video drivers for XP will be released with the next coming Catalyst driver package. -
It would be preferrable to wait if there is going to be an offical XP compatiable release.... but there is little difference... just remember to update on the next release
I didn't see chipset drivers for this particular combo on the AMD site...unless you are referring to the "technology driver"
Regardless... Installing the Chipset driver on the Gateway site WILL brick your machine -
Download the chiset drivers from the ATI website. SO simple. Why would you even think about getting chipset drivers from Gateway??? -
are ure multimedia keys functioning? mine does not after doing a clean install of vista and the drivers dont seem to work for it. was wondering if they work on vista (concerned about the audio/dvd key)
-
Errmmm.... Actually some of the drivers from the Gateway site are backwards compatible to XP... for instance the webcam + software..... modem drivers.
again, I do not see chipset drivers on the ATI/AMD website (unless of course AMD to refers them as "technology drivers" ... Mind posting a link to help those who need them?
-
My multimedia keys work on vista after a reformat. It's all registry entries. Download the "driver" from gateway and you will see its just registry entries. I edited mine to open my media player and music player of choice. Leaving that arrow pointing to the right open media center
-
i installed the "driver" and yes it does change my registry but the buttons still dont work, could u tell me how u edited yours?
-
When you download the package, if you follow the instructions and you open that executable file, you "think" it ran the registry entries for you.
After I did that, the buttons still would not work. So I open the 2 registry entries in notepad and follow its path in the registry.
Low and behold, the entries were not embedded.
There are 2 registry entries included in the package, both inputting entries on the same location. I believe one is if you have media center edition installed, and another for something else. The one with the entry saying "etray" or "ehome" I believe is the one for media center.
I just double clicked that registry save and asked if you would like to embed it and I said yes. Log off user than log back on, and the buttons work.
Now if you want to change what program the buttons open, go back to that registry point and change it to the path of desired program.
Botton 1 being that arrow pointing to the right next to the power button.
Button 2 being the music button
Button 3 being the DVD button.
Sorry for the vagueness, just coming from what I remember. -
works eugenile, thanks alot for the help.
-
Somebody could help me because I didn't found the SATA driver for Win XP for my T-1616...
Thanks -
I got rid of vista on my T1616 and got the video drivers to work but the sound card drivers don't work from either site. I have no sound any idea on how to fix this? I seem to be having probs with my modem on the high def audio bus also. Need some imput on how to get this thing running on XP Pro please. Please go into simple details with any suggestions. Thank you
-
Disregard previous post please as after reading everything I could find it seems Gateway and MS has done a very good job at making sure that this laptop is ONLY Vista compatible until someone out here is bright enough to write software to enable XP or other OS to work on it. Got to admit that Bill had a good idea when he thought up this one so everyone would have to buy new equipment that is VISTA capable. I've had this T 1616 for 2 weeks now and already have had to do 2 restores and the USB modem for internet I bought still will not work and the manufacturer of the drive couldn't get it to work after 2 hours on the phone with them. They said i needed to contact MS and that's something I really don't want to do! Vista sucks at this point and time and hopefully MS will do something soon as I really like this T 1616. Going back to Vista for now but I will keep a close eye on this forum for anyone that gets it to work on XP Pro. Thanks for all the info here guys.
-
vista isnt all that bad. so far all my pre 2005 games work and cs2 versions of adobe products.
-
I am almost done with my driver search. I got the audio, networking devices, card reader, cam, and video devices working. I am having difficulty figuring out the chipset drivers. If anyone needs drivers for the other devices just let me know.

somebody help! my sound still does not work
-
i have a problem tryin to install the driver for x1270. I tried the dell one but olse multiple options and the system is not able to install it. In the case of dell driver the systme shows message that hardware was not installed becasue software was not found. I have multiboot option so Vista is intalled on the primary partition. I am wondering if it has something to do with the installation process. Can any body advise on this? I already spent days trying to figure out what is going on.
-
Yes...
When you go through thedriver update process... You have tospecify the computer what driver to use by utilizing the "Have Disk" option. Otherwise Windows will overlook it due to it not being Microsoft certified or WHQL (whatever it is).
If you follow what the author of this post did concerning the video driver it will work. But you have to use the "Have Disk" advanced method.
I am about to go to bed right now but here are a few that I have. I did get a few PMs for audio drivers and my sound does work. I am taking the computer back to Best Buy tomorrow. I get a good deal on an HP DV2660se. I used a Program called Driver Magician to backup the drivers so I'll still be able to lend support to the T1616 people that remain.
DivShare File - ATI Function Driver for High Definition A.rar
DivShare File - SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC.rar
DivShare File - ATI SMBus.rar
DivShare File - Agere Systems HDA Modem.rar -
I am not sure if I was picking the wrong file or folder but at then end it worked by instead of installing the driver I used the update driver option. Finally I got it it was like a dream came true after hours of work. Thanks for all you guys who take time to share and help others.
-
No problem. I returned my laptop today back to Best Buy. I still have the driver files in case someone needs them in the future.
We're here to help.... Well atleast I am. -
Hi, I recently made the downgrade from vista to xp to my gateway t1616, I used all the drivers from this forum, the problem that I am having is with the sound card, the driver works but I doesnt sound, I mean in the devices the sound card is "working" with no problems. but it doenst make any sound through the speakears neither the headphones I used the ATI HD Audio - ATI 791A driver I dont know if that one is the one that I should use, Also it has 3 unknown devices that i dont know what are they for. I only installed the graphics, sound, bus, modem and webcam drivers, which others do i need????
Thanks in advance -
Along with the audio driver there is the SigmaTel Audio CODEC that has to be installed as well in order for your sound to work. I think that is why you have no audio.
The rest of the drivers could be chipset drivers. I never found all of them because AMD has no chipset drivers available to download AFAIK.
Did you install your Ethernet/WiFi drivers? I'm not sure if you're surfing the board via Dial-Up. -
Agent:
I am having trouble getting audio on an M-1617, basicly the same laptop only 15.4" screen. I notice the Sigmatel download you posted is a 600k file; most of the ones I've tried ate lin the 6M range. Then I read your last note which said you need the codec, which is what the download is labelled. Clarify?
BTW, where did you find this file?
thanx

Hi guys, I've been working on getting my T1616 to work for 3 days now, I have everything but sound and the media buttons working! Can someone please do a "STEP by STEP" Instructions on what to do....my speakers under system say "No driver installed" and I installed most of the drivers that Agent posted but still no sound coming out.
-
-
I also have that codec installed on my laptop and it doesnt change anything, the sound is not working, my ethernet and wifi both of them are working, I am surfing the board via wifi.
-
is it possible for a step by step tutorial on how to upgrade t-1616 with xp pro? ive tried to update my drivers with the files posted but still no luck
-
ok, got my display driver, sound driver and codecs were installed, but still no sound, same problem as escoria. is there anything im missing for the sound?
-
I've got everything but sound, and I have the drivers+codecs installed I'm thinking of doing a clean install of XP again and starting over!
-
im just going to get the audigy 2 zs
link: http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=&subcategory=&product=10769&nav=artwork
problem solvednot to mention better sound
-
Okay which were the proper sound drivers to download? the ones from the 1st post combined with "SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC" ?
-
has anyone actually gotten sound to work in XP, not just have the drivers say they are 'okay'
-
I would not have taken the time to post them if they did not work. Maybe I should have made a youtube video and put an AgentEzzard watermark on it.
Also, there was a divshare database issue today so the links were dead for a period of time. Maybe it was a Y2K8 problem. -
if you do a youtube video tutorial I will appreciate it a lot.
Pleeeeeeeeeease -
What are the biggest advantages you've seen so far from switching to XP?
-
Okay I got sound to work finally. But Agent Ezzard's drivers didn't work for me I had to get a different one. Still was SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC, but had to get it from a different source and different forum.
Anyone else have issues with the Wi-Fi dropping AIM consistently? -
And websites timing out....
-
-
I put it on my FTP. The file is in the WDM folder, make sure you do the select device with Disk and not trying installing that exe.
When sound actually works it will use the ATI HD Audio - ATI 791A driver and the SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC. You may have to go into control panel and go to the sound and audio devices and then go to the Audio tab and switch the default device to the SigmaTel.
Hope this works for you -
kira64: thanks!
ATTN EVERYONE: kira64's instructions are confirmed to work. here are more complete instructions:
step 1) uninstall your previously-installed broken version in the hardware pane of sound&audio
2) install kira64's thingy using add hardware
3) set default device to sigmatel
4) play videogames with sound -
Hey kira64 thanks a bunch, its perfectly working right now
-
You can download it here:
http://t64designs.com/driver_kit.zip
Included drivers in this kit are.
Video: Radeon xpress1270 (from dell, but works)
Pointing devices: Synaptic driver
NIC: Realtek RTL8139 (there are 3 options, you select the 2nd one I believe)
WIFI: Realtek RTL8187b driver and utility (works for xp, will fix issues with internet dropping)
Modem: Agere Systems HDA Modem
SMbus: ATI SMBus driver
Webcam software and driver
Audio Codec: sound_driver_92XXM4
I didn't include the ATI sound Driver because I'm not sure if i got that from windows searching for it after I got an actual online connection or if I installed the driver.
Make sure to use Add Hardware and select device from disc on every item. Though the WiFi software and drive can just be installed using the Setup.exe I included.
If anyone wants me to add more to the kit let me know. I will add the chipset drivers if an XP version comes out or I can find it.
(I am also working on getting the sound and WiFi to work under Ubuntu 7.10) -
do you have any remaining yellow marks under device manager?
what about the memory card reader? did you find a driver for that too?
I´m trying to do the downgrade for a friend but I do want to be sure that everything will work so she can have no problems.
also, are the multimedia buttons working for you? I read the registry thing but is there another way to make them functional?
thanks -
The remaining yellow Drivers are the ones having to do with the Chipset. I know the chipset model but there are no XP drivers.
The Memory card reader worked without drivers for me, put in my SD card and it worked.
My multimedia buttons work -
Hi, I recently downgraded my T-1616 to Windows xp and iv downloaded the dell video driver package but every time I try to do the update driver thing in device manager and direct it to where the driver should be:
C:\dell\drivers\R163694\Driver\2KXP_INF
It says cannot install this hardware since it could not find the right software.
Can you please tell me what I am doing wrong and how to install the X1270 driver.
Thanks -
If you use the wizard to install the driver for you it will not work. You have to go the advanced route and choose "let me choose the driver". Press "Have Disk" and select the folder that the driver is in. It should show up then.
-
Thanks its working now. I have installed both the ATi hi def audio and the sigmatel codec drivers and they worked for a while but then stopped randomly can u help me please.
Cheers -
