I've done a good bit of calling around in the Chicagoland area, and apparently the local distribution facility has over 370 in stock, but the stores have not yet received them. I've even had the stores check physical inventory with the statement that the item would probably not be on the floor, and each store came back empty (or so they say). So for now we are still on hold, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

After watching a few videos comparing the 68xx with the 173, I've decided I'm kind of glad that the 7811 doesn't have a fingerprint reader, since some have complained about it being "in the way" - it's right below the touchpad and it splits the right and left clicks, making their buttons smaller.
-
-
-
Does the 7811 have the dedicated media center button to the right of the power button? I think they removed this on the 173's.
-
Do you mind taking some pics/measurements?
I went to a few local Best Buys, none of them have it or even know when they expect to have them. I tried to check out the 6860's for a reasonable guess as to what the 7811 might be like, but they are kept off and firmly in place with some lock thing that doesn't even let me lift the thing up.
I really just want to know about the fans. Where they are, whether they blow air in or out of the bottom. I'm planning on buying a cooler, most likely this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834998685
And it would be nice to know about the fans on the laptop so I don't waste my monies. Cheers on your new machine. -
Regarding the screen it looks amazing! I am much more happy with the 7811 fx than the AW m15x I had
I'll have a review up later when I have some time, I got to go to work soon so I'll be on later

I'm picking mine up today, I'll take pics and write a review tonight. I'll leave all the testing bs to spd151 ^_^

I'm sorry but I have another question
. On the left side, is there a Kensington lock or whatever it was called? The P-173XL FX edition has something like that so I was wondering if the P-7811 have it too.

All they could do is ship on from the warehouse if I ordered one, but I really did want to play around with one to make sure there were no issues first. Or, at the very least, have someone answer my questions about the fans.
As to the display 6860, it had no power adapter to use, so no power. Couldn't check out the fan/viewing angle issues for myself. -
That wouldn't help you with the fans though. -
I'll be ordering mine online in a few days...hopefully it ships before the end of next week...as university starts back on September 1st.

Wow that's f****** rediculous. The 9800m GT gets little to no boost over the 8800m GTX and the 9800m GTS gets a huge boost over the 8800m GTS. nVidia really screwed up and is gonna **** off a lot of people like me that bought the 9800m GT thinking it was way better (which it should be). I get 300 more 3dmark06 points than the Gateway 7811FX for roughly $450 more (For my Sager NP5796). -
With drivers, your scores may improve.
And more importantly, 3dmark06 has a range of scores. It may be very possible that he's scoring on the higher end right now.
If you want, you could ask him to try out the DMC4 demo. Both of you could test out the benchmarking tool at the same settings at DX9/10 and see how performance goes. That might be a better guide for actual performance.
If you got a 5796, you should still be in your return time frame? If it's really bothering you, you might want to consider returning it? -
I am considering returning it for the Gateway. Unless in game benchies prove otherwise, I may. I hope these 3dmark06 tests are not conclusive of in-game performance because if it is, I will very one very mad customer. -
Oh and @ SPD, can you run in-game benchmarks.
Preferrably for Half Life 2: Lost Coast or something I Can download for free like the DMC4 benchmark. Thanks -
Maybe 1920 x 1200 2x AA Ultra high, 1920 x 1200 0xAA Ultra High, 1440x 900 0x AA Ultra high, 1440 x 900 2x AA Ultra High
A run in DX 9 and a run in DX10?
Ignore the letter grade, and look at the FPSes.
This is just a suggestion. I figured the wide range might help. The 9800M GTS, with 32 lesser SP's should do poorer at higher resolutions comparatively than the 9800M GT. hence the higher res vs lower res testing. This will also show the effect of AA at the different resolutions. -

It doesn't suprise me that the 9800M GTS does so well, its core and shaders are clocked 20% faster than the 9800M GT's after all. The only problem I see is that in order to get the same performance level at the 7811's native resolution will require a drop in detail level compared to the 6831. Hopefully my Best Buy will get one out on display soon so I can see just how bad the squinting will be.

i read a thread here saying the 9800m gt is just a re branded 8800m gtx, no die shrunk nothing, just a sticker.
not a very easy thread to read as many posts seems to have been deleted:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=272659&page=35 -
www.notebookcheck.net
showed that the 9800m gt was only like 80 points better than the GTS both using the same hardware (8800 gtx I assumed it was using a different hardware therefore the lower score)
I take this result with a grain of salt but they seem to show when compared to the thread about 8800GTX / 9800GT that all these 3 cards 9800GT, 9800GTS and 8800GTX have basically similar or equal performance (within error margin) -
the 9800m gts power is in its clocks there is no doubt that a similarly clocked 8800m gtx(9800m gt) @ 600/1500/800 would leap ahead as to its shaders advantage.
-
Downloading the DMC4 benchmark now, will post results once I have it installed and gotten a chance to run it. I ordered my 2nd Hd today. I do love this laptop and do not regret for a minute the purchase or the return of the Toshiba, much happier with the laptop all the way around.

Not done yet but here is the first round of benchmarks for dx 9.0c
1400 x 876 32 bit - super high Texture, Shadows,Quality
scene 1-86fps 2-58fps 3-116fps 4-62fps No AA
scene 1-79fps 2-52fps 3-108fps 4-54fps 2 x AA
1920 x 1200 32 bit - super high Texture, Shadows, Quality
scene 1-55fps 2-36fps 3-66fps 4-41fps No AA
scene 1-49fps 2-34fps 3-60fps 4-36fps 2 x AA -
Trying to run the dx 10 benchmark but I am having issue it looks like you are watching it through a predators mask or something.....any ideas?

update drivers ?

Nvidia refers me to Gateway, Gateway not showing any drivers I can find.

Does anyone have pics of the underside of the laptop?
-
-
Also, what does the fps number mean. Is that average, max, or minimum FPS? -
Yes it was the DMC4 benchmark, and I assume that its the average frames per second for that segment. I will try and run at the other resolution a bit later and postl.
-
Syngyn from what I was reading Nvidia refers you back to Gateway for drivers for the laptop. Gateway doesnt have updated drivers as of yet. I see where if you use some other file you can use the desktop drivers but I am a bit confused by it. Ive read that the new drivers can be used for all the cards but it may require the use of a modded file or something.
-
Yep, go to the link I gave you. They will tell you where to put the modded inf file. LTV2go is not changing the driver, only the inf file so that your laptop will install the driver. Laptop manufacturers don't like you using drivers they have not tested so you have to trick, well you get the point. I'm pressed for time or would point you to the instructions but you will find them on the site. It is easy to do.
Edit: Go here and read the quick start guide about the inf file.
http://laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=19831
I think you have Vista 64 right, so this is the latest they have.
I think you just drop the modded .inf file into the expanded driver folder and it replaces the original .inf. It's been a little while since I did it and don't trust my memory. -
Thanks Syngen I will give that a go
-
Okay I ran the DMC4 test at 1400x876, super high, no vsync, no AA
I scored 108.36, 71.51, 142.84, 75.44. So it does seem to be that the 3dmark06 score is hardly representative of the actual performance difference between the 9800m GTS and the 9800m GT. Seems like I'll stick with my Sager NP5796 and grats on your Gateway. Good deal. -

These cards should have a good deal of head room. Core and Shaders are very important.

If needed I could sell the p8400 and use the money to get a p9500 or better in the future. -
-
Omg, you people with the gateways 7811 are lucky, im sooo jealous...i've been calling nonstop to all my local best buys and none of them have it...btw, i live in the bay area in california and i was wondering if any of you guys know where to get one.

@ SPD
Can you please run the Devil May Cry 4 benchmark at super high, no vsync, no AA 1680x1050? Thanks.
Then if you want to run it at the same settings but 2xAA and/or 4xAA and/or Vsync. thanks a bunch. -
Well it's the 14th and I checked my local bestbuy store online and they have the p 7811 fx in.
I'll try to pick one up friday or sometime next week.
Got my 7811-fx Today
