WankelRoto: OCing the P8400 requires a hardware modification and is most likely out of your league. This thread from like page 14 onward is all about doing it.

unclewebb, Thank you for your contribution, throttlestop works like a champ on my gateway. I was curious though, do you have any experience with linux, or enough I should say to get a version of this working with linux?

I have been looking through the /sys/devices/system/cpu area of sysfs and I do not find anything that pertains to this particular state. But from what I can tell, kernel 2.6.23 and later can handle IDA. I will keep doing some research, but let me know if you want to collaborate.

    Thanks :)

Just use the version of setFSB that kravis wrote. Before I got my hands on that, I experimeted using the standard version of setFSB i set my pcie speed from 80-100 in 1mhz increments and got weird results. 89mhz and 93 (can't remember exactly) gave me the closest to stock results using Crysis demo's built in benchmark and 3Dmark06. But regardless of the pcie speed I couldn't overclock my 9800m even 1 mhz and not get performance drops.

everybody, i wanna ask.. and especially for kravis..

can i do an OC without hardware modification?

can a simple bios flashing (kravis' modified) and disabling EIST in ThrottleStop do an OC?
    - if yes, how stable is it? how bout the temps?

im really noob about soldering. so i guess i wont make any hardware modifications.

pls answer, and thanks for your attention :D :D

    Hi dwinandoy,

You will be able to do a sort of an overclock (not massive though) without a hardware modification by flashing the modified bios and using Throttlestop to lock the CPU at the IDA multiplier (9x on the P8400).
Doing just the above is guaranteed to be stable and you can even lower the voltage using the Throttlestop utility to undervolt the CPU at this setting for lower temps because the default IDA voltage is usually way more than is necessary for stability.

ok.. so i wanna flash the modified bios, but im too scared.. how's the chance of something goes wrong??

im really scared because i bricked my laptop when flashing gpu bios an i cant get it back booting up.. i was getting deeper an the problem became irreparable.
but i really love this thing so i bought new mobo..

of course i dont wanna brick my laptop again. so what do u think? is this really safe? im scared about flashing..

and can anyone guide me to flash via dos? ive flashe my bios twice, but using windows .exe. so how to do it via dos?

thanks! and sorry bout my really noob attittude :)

    Hi dwinandoy,

There's always an element of risk to flashing the system bios but you can prepare yourself beforehand to lesson that risk. I myself have flashed my bios several times without problems.

    Prep things you can do:
    =================
    1. Keep the battery and AC plugged in to the laptop.
    2. Make a Crisis Recovery disk. You can find these files in the forums or google.

    Bios flashing:
    =========
    1. Find a usb stick and backup any data you need from there since it will be formatted.
    2. Follow the instructions here to create a bootable usb stick with plain MSDOS.
    3. Extract all of the files from modified bios zip file here to the usb stick.
    4. Set the bios to boot automatically from USB. I had to reboot and enter the bios menu to check: Enable legacy usb devices and move usb stick boot to the top of the boot order.
    5. Stick the usb stick into a free usb port and reboot the computer. You should boot directly into MSDOS from the usb stick.
    6. When you are ready, type flash.bat on the command line and the bios will start flashing. Make sure that it completes successfully before rebooting.

After that you should be running the 9C.17.00 bios with the EIST switch unlocked.

hmmm i cant extract the bios.. im using winrar here.. it says "unknown method for BIOS.WPH, and unknown method for Phlash16.exe"

    ======================================================================================================

EDIT : Ive extracted it via 7-zip but im still unsure.. is the file really okay? because others have done it via winrar..

when ive done flashing, what will it say when its done? and the rebooting process isnt automatic? so i have to shut it down myself?

and i wanna ask which tutorial of Crisis recovery thats really good? i havent prepared it..

thanks! sorry again if im too much asking, im scared to do this kinda DOS thing :)

    ======================================================================================================

Im now on the edge of flashing.
It boots from usb and shows:

    "
    Windows Millenium
    1990-1999

    C:\
    "
is this right??? im gonna flash ASAP after there are answers to both of my questions. (re: 1. is this the bios.wph file? im using 7-zip cause winrar can't extract 2. Is that what is supposed to be seen? Windows Millenium etc..)

Thanks!! I promise ill post my 3dmarks06 score after i got the 2,4 Ghz and overclock my GPU a little. :D

    Hi dwinadoy,

Don't worry too much about creating the Crisis Recovery Disk since you create one on any PC if you ever need to do it.

Yes, I think that the MSDOS files from there is taken from the Windows Millennium system so that's correct.

Now that you are booted into MSDOS, you should be able to run flash.bat and start flashing. The bios flasher (phlash16.exe) should complain if the bios file (bios.wph) is corrupted so it should be ok. The zip file was actually created using 7-zip anyway so if it extracted, the files should be fine.

You should know when the flashing is done since it displays progress bars while flashing. Just wait for say 10 minutes or more to ensure that the flashing is complete and when you see no more activity on the screen and flash completed successfully, manually shutdown and reboot without the usb stick connected.

yep ive successfully flashed and activate 9x multiplier on throttlestop. but what i got now is my 3dmark score is less than before..

my gpu is soo hot now, it reaches 95 degrees so that it downclocks itself.. why is this?

and second question, what should i do with throttle stop? just check the 9x multiplier box and uncheck EIST? because in cpu-z my voltage is 1.313 thats super high i think.. pls help me.. thanks

    ======================================================================================================

EDIT : Ive found the way to undervolt, now im running 9x multiplier in 1.1750 v.
But the main problem's my gpu.. its way too hot now even if im not overclocking.. any ideas?

I think you can lower your CPU voltage lower than 1.175 for dual IDA if you do it when EIST is enabled.

How's the airflow coming out of the GPU vent? The problem is probably dust. Do you have your laptop raised?

yes its raised, i'm even using a cooler here.. the temps are still hot, maxing at 105 degrees at games. i think i'm gonna bring it to the dealer to give it new paste. i have no idea about this...

what is the lowest voltage that is proven stable on dual IDA?

You gotta test that for yourself. Everyone's P8400 is different, but the voltage should be slightly greater than the lowest stable voltage for your 8.5x multiplier.

    My voltages are:

    6.0X: 0.925

    7.0X: 0.9625

    8.0X: 0.975

They are the lowest I can go. I have had those voltages for months without any problems. However, as Ultimate said, YMMV.

Yeah I got lucky with my processor because my voltages are:
6.0x: below .875V (curse them for locking the voltage)
    7.5x: .875V
    8.5x: .9V
And admittedly before IDA was disabled, I needed .9625V to be stable which seems like a huge jump up from .9V for just a .5x increase.

Sorry to semi hijack the thread, but I've got a gpu overclocking question if anyone wants to field it. I used the BIOS provided a few pages back along with throttlestop to get my multiplier up to 9.0x, though I do have to have EIST enabled to get it to really work and register (not really sure what it's doing). I wanted to try to overclock the GPU now but no matter what I try everything keeps reseting. I change the clocks out in nvidia system tools but when I restart they just set back to the factory settings and riva tuner won't even let me get clocks higher than the factory set ones. I'm a little afraid to use atitool both because of it's name and the fact that it is so outdated so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi googzy,

I searched for the packard bell q005 ipower gx and it does surprisingly look like the Gateway P7805u laptop. It could be rebranded version of the same laptop?

Maybe you can save a CPU-Z TXT Report and I could check if the components are the same as mine?

    Hi googzy,

I just compared your CPU-Z report with mine and your laptop does seem to have the same exact non-upgradeable components as the Gateway P7805u!

The only difference is that your components are marked with Packard Bell subvendor and subsystem ID's while mine are marked with Gateway subvendor and subsystem ID's.

I'd say that with the same components inside, it's possible that you could flash the Gateway P7805u bioses and it might just work, but you'd better make sure you have a Crisis Recovery disk prepared in case you really want to go ahead with it.

Here is my CPU-Z report for comparison purposes: View attachment KEVS-PC.txt

    Hey smlindahl,

I just recompressed the file using the built-in Windows ZIP folders utility so now it should be more easier to extract.
You can download the unlocked bios files and also the crisis recovery disk from my signature.

    Hi googzy,

All the files for the Crisis Recovery Disk are the standard but you should get the .WPH of a released bios for your laptop if possible and replace the BIOS.WPH file with it since the one included is the same 9C.17.00 bios for the Gateway P78 but without the EIST unlock modification.

smlindahl: If you want HWMonitor to report your CPU core temperature correctly then you need to go into the hwmonitorw.ini configuration file and you need to edit this line so it is using the correct 105.0 value.

    CPU_0_TJMAX=105.0

The Intel documentation confirms this value here:

    Intel® Core?2 Duo Processor P8400

That's why HWMonitor reports lower core temperatures than ThrottleStop does. When this is fixed, they should be the same.

Hi all, just a quick throttlestop question. When I downloaded it initially and after I flashed kravis's modded bios I was able to turn EIST on and off and doing so would allow me to change the core voltage on my cpu. Lately however, I can't seem to enable EIST or change out the multiplier (EIST just unchecks every time I click it). Now it's locked at 8.5 multiplier that's giving me 2261 MHz even though I have it set to the 9.0x that was initially giving me 2394 MHz stable. Any ideas how to fix this?

I don't see what people's obsession with 3DMark is all about. Lesterp's overclocks impress me far more than some bogus score. I bet 3DMark would give a person with a Q9200 a double CPU score over a P8400 despite the fact that the Q9200 can't do double the computing in most situations. Same reason why ATI cards get like double the gigaflops over equal NVidia cards because ATI cards have more cores.

I can assure you that I am not obsessed with 3DMark, not to say I don't get obsessed with things on occasion, for instance overclocking the snot out of this funky old laptop. 3DMark is merely a commonly used performance metric and a way to check gpu overclock stability.

It's good that you are not obsessed then :). There are plenty of people that are obsessed with hitting some milestone in 3DMark. I see you hit the 11K milestone.

My Q9000 hits 3.6k on cpu so yeah there is quite an increase... You have to take into account that the P8400 only has 3mb L2 Cache whereas a q9000 has 6mb L2 Cache.....

I just got 9921 on 3DMark06 after boosting my multiplier to 9x using Kravis' modified bios.

To those that did the hardware mod, what ram timings did you end up using?

I assume the voltage mod is important to reach a speed of 3ghz with a bus speed of 339. It would help if there was a picture of the exact mod needed.

Someday I might try the hardware mod considering one of my roommates is studying to become an electrical engineer and could probably help me out.

I'm going to bump this thread for the last time.

Would ANYONE be willing to enable the 9X multiplier on the .23 bios?

I'm sure it is the last one that gateway will ever release.

The bios makes the GPU fan come on less often- something that I really enjoy. Therefore, it would be awesome if someone could modify the bios to allow the 9x multiplier, which I will use from here on out.

I saw the post on how to modify the bios, but it is beyond me to go that deep into a system without truly knowing what I'm doing.

Like you, I would also like to overclock my Gateway P-7805u FX having upgraded my BIOS to Phoenix Technologies LTD 9C.23.00, dated 10/1/2009. Can any of you IT super-geeks help out with this? Would a binary file comparison/editor between the older modified BIOS and this new BIOS update be the key here to a using new BIOS in a modified state?

P.S. I will be updating my internal storage media to two Seagate Momentus XT 500GB (with 4GB SSD Adaptive Cache Memory) HHDs later today, configured in either RAID 0 or RAID 1. This should be another big performance boost. Remaining upgrades are the CPU (T9600, P9700, T9900, or X9100 (version E0/SLGE7), LCD (1920x1200), mini internal communications card (Bluetooth, Direct Wi-Fi, or 4-G broadband), and possibly a biometric fingerprint reader (like I have in my Gateway P-173XL FX).

If you want to OC without a hard mod, you need the x9100 and TS. I know others have aded internal BT but I am not sure about an internal 3G, 4G or D-WiFi. Raid1 is ok for redundancy but since the redundant drive isn't used as read it is a waist for the XT, Raid0 though has CPU overhead not sure about Raid1 as there is no array to combine just redundancy...........

I'm not trying to overclock. All I want is the 9x multiplier unlocked. A modified bios would allow that.

Not refering to 9x, but the post above mine. I think there is a bios for what you are doing though. The other poster wants 1333 Mhz for the memory etc, 1066 though doesn't seem to be a bottle nech though even at 4.0 GHz with the x9100, although it may be for a C2Q at 3.0 GHz or abouve but that is a mute point..........

After flashing the bios, what else is necessary to get the small boost to 2.4?

edit: couple of questions, concerns, problems

flashed the bios, no prob, can check and uncheck eist in throttlestop

    1. following the guide when I uncheck eist it locks at 8.5 instead of 9
    2. does exiting the program or rebooting default everything back to stock?

2nd edit: got it to lock at 9 (who knows how??) can i save the rofile and it work everytime? do i need to run it every start up (or autostart it minimized)?

Could Kravis, or anybody else who has a copy, post Kravis' version of setfsb? I'm hopeful a binary edit can be made so it can adjust FSB of other PLLs.
