My 6860 is now a media server/htpc! Works perfectly.

Good to see even some 68xx's survived. A bit off topic but thinking about from the P79xx's there are at least 3 more generations of newer CPU and GPU's. So generation wise were are running at least the great grandfathers of the latest tech.
Where else though does the fourth or even fifth generation old hardware down run the newest M$ OS release robustly? Admitedly though some hardware upgrades may be required like RAM and maybe a SSD................. -
P8400 is running Windows 8 like a champ. In fact, on the slow 5400 rpm hdd I have in it, Windows 8 boots faster than my quad core Windows 7 machine which has an SSD (Vertex 2).

We have 2 currently up and running. A p7805 and a p7811/p7915.

p7805u! I love this beast! In the process of doing some repairs (replacing the case), making some upgrades (ehh "it's already going to be torn apart" is a great reason to upgrade everything!), and a good old fashioned cleaning!
I do tend to lurk but thought this poll deserves a post and all you helpful notebook experts def deserve a Thank You!
Cheers! -
My P79xx is going to semi-retirement soon. It has been a long search but I have found the primary replacement. I had searched all the mainstream customizable systems and none were what I really wanted but as they say "Seek and Ye shall find".......................
-
It's just kinda sad Gateway was bought out by Acer and this line was discontinued.
-
The new system I'm getting may be a loss to the market as well. I will see for sure once in but from the on set they give no competition to Alienware, Clevo or Origin on the high end gaming systems. Thos are all high end customizable systems. Changable video cards with the vbios seperate from the bios and either unlocked bios and/or XTU modules in bios. Also those systems have easily accessed components to change them compared to doing a 1/2 or full tare down of the case. -
Old paint, FX-6831, still running well but second newer 7805 has bit the old GPU graveyard. Shame the upgrade parts are getting a bit hard to find and some are really over priced. Darn good laptops while they lasted, no? May try re-ball on 7805 if #1 son is up to it, as it's his.
-
Still using my 6831fx. Only Replaced a bad memory stick and power supply. My dvd drive is flaky but i hardly use it and have to use the ==> button to boot up
Does have a couple of cracks in the case from it falling, the dell laptop backpack buckle gave out
. Upgraded to a T7300 and samsung 830 ssd.

6860fx is cool too i have one i got long ago still runs perfect, paid 1400$ for him and has been great computer ever since, i have p-7805u 2 with 1920x1200 screens one 4gb memory one 8 gb memory and a p-7811 weird tho my p-7811 gets 5.9 on windows rating as does p7805u with 8gb memory, and the p-7811 idles at 25 celsius coolest of all 4 i have??? it has icd7 but so does the p-7805u, which is actually better the p-7811 or the p-7805u fxs i know 7805 has 1gb nvidea and 7811 only has 512 mb nvidea but i cant really tell a difference???
i buy and sell p-78 series gateways only reason i have the 7811 is guy sold me wrong motherboard he advertised one for 7805u but since everything interchanges on p-78 i went ahead n used it in a p-7805, works great i think, im not sure if you can sell parts here but i have a lot of p-78 parts no screens or motherboards that are good, if its ok to sell parts message me or email me [email protected] or take it down if im at fault,i looked for buy sell parts here it may not have one or i missed it. if i cant sorry in advance if its ok maybe i can help some of you needing hard to find parts. i have some vista recovery too, i copied them just in case i decide to sell one computer factory. i love the p-7805 if u got one with lead soldered motherboard n 1920x1200 screen, i looked n looked on ebay n by checking part number i got 1920x1200 screen for 40$ shipped brand new lg,i was lucky he had 2 he thought but only one
its nice coming to a dedicated p-78 site that is current, ive pretty much found out that p-7801 thru p-7811 parts interchange

Still have my P7805 FX... but not for just longer. Work with heavier video means I needed something a bit more robust, so I recently built a desktop with intel i3 chip and will be sending this along.
Must admit, I'll miss it; it's served me very well, indeed. -
7805h here

I bought my P-7811 FX here about 18 months ago. This is a super system, running WIN 7 Ultimate. I upgraded the hard drives to a 120 SSD and 500GB 7200 a couple of months ago.
I'm not a gamer but rather a 'lil ole lady who appreciates 'a fine piece of kit', as my English friends would say. I've been using desktop replacement/gaming laptops exclusively for a dozen years now.
However, I need to replace the touchpad (again) as my hand does not like mice and I spend at least eight hours a day on this system. Any ideas where I can get one? -

7805u still going strong after the x9100 upgrade. Havent been here in a while because I stopped gaming but since I am looking to upgrade I have started lurking again.
-
Been rocking my p7811 for five years - still going strong. Only hiccup I've had was the GPU fan quit on me one day, went ahead and replaced both fans, reapplied thermal compound and upgraded to a T9600. Maybe hardmodding and an x9100 is in the future for this thing...
-
Still going 7811 (bought a refurb as backup and daughter is now using that)
-
Still using mine and it works like a champ.
With help from this site and others I've upgraded or added the ram, cpu, bluetooth, bluray and both HDD's.
getting ready to put a SSD in there. -
Wrll one of my sticks of ram died. This thing sucks with 2gb. Ddr2 prices are insane.

Mine is still going strong after 6 years. Started life as a 7801u now it has been reborn with a Godzilla N10 motherboard and an x9100 cpu. Anyone know of a good replacement for the CPU and GPU fans?
-
Been using mine for the past 5 years but yesterday I decided it was time for a change and ordered the Lenovo Y400. It has been great lurking around in the Gateway forum but--for me at least--it is time to move on. My 7805U doesn't have a keyboard (I'm using a wireless keyboard; long story), is falling apart in the body, and the screen has gotten dust under the glass. Still, it manages to chug along like nothing is happening.

It only seems that long. Check your mfg date on back. -

I love these systems, ive got 3 and im interested in buying any in any type of condition. They play new games as long as you update the cpu, awesome systems, ive got a 7805 with the high res screen muaha
-
My manufacture date is October 10th 2008. Well almost 6 years anyway. I've never heard of any other "gaming" laptop lasting that long. Thanks for the link to the fans.

Yours probably the 68XX version with 8800gts. The 78xx version is probably what they are refering too, its more popular, sold alot 9800gts And yours is good, slap a t9500 cpu in there, they are cheap like 40 bucks. You can also upgrade the video chipset to like a 8800gtx or 9800gt, just buy one for like 30 bucks ebay and send it to a reballer to be soldered on! Wickedness
-
This has been the best laptop I've owned or used. I have a heap of old dead Vaio's, a Toshiba and a couple of HP's. -
Miss my old 6860. Did a full chassis replacement on mine not too long before I sold it to get my Asus G73SW. While moving down here to New Mexico the backpack it was in fell out of the truck royally fubaring the chassis. Upgraded the CPU and replaced the optical drive too. I got very experienced taking it apart and putting it back together. Just took my G73 apart for the first time this past weekend to replace the DC jack.

Thats for the old gateway fx p-68 series, the one that runs the 8800gts. The only upgrade option you would want to do on it would be the 9800gt, its worth the upgrade and runs cool, the 8800gtx would run too hot. A gtx 260 would even fit in there and work, but it would get to hot, someones already tried that.
So if your video ever craps out, spend a 100 bucks to get it reballed, and order this to replace the video chipset
9800gt video chipset http://www.ebay.com/itm/nVidia-G92-...461?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20c71b5fd5 . alot better than 8800gts or 9800gts!
Would be a nice upgrade for the the old fx 68.
As far as the 7805 goes i forget its upgrade, it was like a gt 160 which is the same as the 9800gts , http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-new-N...321?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a1b8e4de9 but just runs cooler. Thats all u can fit on it, which sux, the 9800gts chip set is an oddball size. -
My original P-6831FX is still running after 1 RMA for a new motherboard. I think it has been about 5 years and I'm still very satisfied. I've cleaned it a few times, added a T8100 for less than $20, and put on some new AS5 and this thing is still working like a charm.
I've replaced it with a MBA for my school computer, but when I'm back home in the summer, I only use the Gateway. I do want a smaller and lighter Windows laptop, but this one working like a charm gives me no reason to change. -

I still got my P-6860FX T9300 and P-7811FX T9600 still working and running haven't installed games on them yet but like to for now I just have the O/S and software install for backup should my Desktop ever be to busy to use..... I did dissemble and dust and re-thermal paste the CPU though the GPU well that looks more trickier to do...
-
My P6860fx w/ T9300 is still kicking. Just today I fresh re-installed the Vista that came with the system onto an Intel SSD, and it's still smooth as ever. Overclocked the gpu to 600mhz core, 900mhz mem, 1475mhz shaders and played some Counter-Strike GO with no issues.
This machine has never given me any trouble and still looks brand new, it's astonishing. Only thing is the battery stopped holding much of a charge a while ago, but I use it as a desktop replacement so no big deal. I remember threads where people were sticking their mobos into ovens and "baking" some life back into them, but my rig still works as well as it did the day I brought it home from Best Buy. -

You mean what program I used to oc? I use nVidia system tools 6.08 with 307.83 whql drivers. They are the latest ones that come up when you search at nVidia's site for 8800M GTS Vista 64-bit drivers. I saw that the system tools software is no longer showing up at the nVidia website, but they are (were) made by them and you can download them from various other sites on the internet.

Any thoughts on the cpu upgrade on whether it would be worth it?
fyi when I am in for series gaming I jump on my Desktop monster. -
To do what? if it is just a gamer I doubt you would get much out of the extra CPU power. Gaming is more limited by the GPU. As far as a SSD, they are pretty fast for desktop use but again for gaming there is no real increase other than if you to are racing from powering up the laptop................
-
My 7805U with the high res screen is still my couch/road photo editing machine. Its now upgraded to 8 GB, P9600 and 80GB Intel SSD with the 320 as a data drive. It could be faster, but every time I look you cant get something with a high res screen for a price that I'd want to pay.
-
7805u still going here... it's screen is gone (broke on deployment) and the media bar is gone (so its jumped with a spring) but it came in handy since my GTX 580 took a dump and I wait for it in the mail.
-

hey legionaire, how do you turn it on without the media bar?? Jumped with spring, can you elaborate?

I'm still here.
