P-7805U with T9900, 8gb Ram, dual SSD hard drives, Blue ray burner, and Windows 7 Ultimate. 5 years old now and still works like it new. GPU temps used to run around 100C when I was gaming with it but recently tore it down and repasted the 9800M GTS with IC Diamond compound and max temps for Furmark (max settings, 3FPS :) ) for 30 mins was 84C. I since got me a Sager NP9170. Using my gateway now for testing different Linux OS and working on making it a Hackintosh..

I still have my P79 running strong! Added a vertex3 90gb SSD, replaced thermal paste for ICD7, fans periodically cleaned!
Next step is TME pinmodding, as soon as I have the necessary confidence :)

My 7801u is still running strong. The 9800m GTS still manages to play Outlast, Civilization V (Medium-High settings at 1080p) and Counter Strike: Go with no problems. I recently upgraded one of my hard drives to a 240GB SSD and added a 24'' 1080p monitor to the mix, which essentially sets up a great dual-monitor system. Pair this all with Windows 8.1 and I get to tackle everything I would like to do such as coding, browsing the internet and gaming at 1080p.

Well I still have my P-6860FX T9300 8Gigs and P-7811FX T9600 8Gigs now and both running fine and good not gaming on them yet but have them for spare should I be in need of them. Just in process of finishing install on the P-78 for final prep. I know these are old laptop but look around and you won't find them if you do they aren't cheap to get. I got mine after alot of haggling but I did get them.

I'm still rocking my P7811FX. Have done the following upgrades over the last 2 years:

    -OC X9100
    -Bluetooth add on (internal)
-Upgraded WIFI card, has 3 antenna's on it and is faster
    -SSD drive (used for boot)
    -8GB ram
    -blu-ray disk drive

I've had to replace the front bezel once, the media bar once, the palmrest twice and the bottom chassis once. Most of that due to my GF knocking the laptop off the table.

I chewed on swapping the MOBO out to a MB.W4201.002 that has 1GB ram, but I don't see the point. I don't think that 1GB vs 512mb is much of a difference and probably won't be noticeable in gameplay.

I did think about going to a P79 series, but I don't like that WXGA rez.The video card looks to be quite a bit better though. But again, I don't want to lose my rez.

So long as you are just replacing the main board it will retain the resolution you have. The video, 100% stock, is about 20-30% better. For others here which WiFi card did you go with and what slot? That is one mod not done here.

I actually am thinking of going 802.11ac here just not too sure which 802.11 ac card will work with the P79/P78 series.

I still have my 7811-FX running strong. About 3 years ago, I upgraded to the T9900 CPU and a Samsung 830 Pro SSd with Windows 7 Pro, then an additional 4GB Ram chip. It runs like new, though even with IC Diamond on all the heatsinks/chips the GPU is maximum at 75C. was hoping for lower.

And was really interested in the 79 motherboard upgrade for the GTX260, a new GPU fan, and copper shims for better heat transfer. But I lost interest when I couldn't figure out the part numbers and didn't have the $$ to buy the wrong one. scoured these forums quite a bit but didn't want to bother the experts like Tanware lol

Recently, I just purchased an Intel 7260HMW wireless card and it seems to be running fine around 800Mbps. Its not much faster but more responsive in respect to pings, remote desktops, etc. Couldn't get bluetooth to work, but I wouldn't use it anyway.

Yes I still visit, yes I still have my 7805u and use it all the time, I have had this laptop for nearly 5 years now and has never gone wrong except for a hard drive failing. The pulsing fan I never notice anymore and the laptop still looks sexy even now! Still runs all the games I want and handles Ableton Live just great!

But my luck with this laptop is running out, I know a capacitor will go, but when...

I'm still here. I still manage to play the newest games (that are not that CPU intensive) despite having a X9100. I undervolt/underclock the X9100 when I'm not gaming using ThrottleStop v6. I just finished Batman: Arkham Origins on max details at 1080p with the exception of Ambient Occlusion. I bought a 24'' Dell monitor for $80 during Black Friday so I can code and work on several programs all at once. This is probably the best value laptop that has come out in the past 5 years because it's still going strong and allowed me to replace the weak CPU with the best Core 2 Duo processor. To top it all off, Windows 8 and my recent SSD upgrade makes this laptop very quick in boot times and starting up programs. The dual bay HDDs enables me to use my SSD for intensive programs/games and my 500GB hard drive for my default user directory.

I still have 7805u. I OCed gpu to 690, mem to 910 and shader to 1725. These were optimal settings. I tried to OC the GPU to 1730 but failed. However the laptop is still great. You can play modern games.

Overclocking the graphics card only improves fps by about 2-5 fps. It's detrimental in the long run because of the excess heat the system is required to handle. I would only recommend overclocking/undervolting the CPU.

Still using my P7811FX as my main browsing/e-mail machine (love the keyboard & screen!), upgraded to Samsung SSD, P9700 CPU, Intel wireless, 8GB RAM, and Windows 8.1. For basic tasks I don't notice that it's much slower than my ASUS G750, but obviously I don't use it any more for games. It's quite amazing, I don't think I've kept any other computer for so many years, and have no plans to retire this puppy until it gives up the ghost (hopefully a long long while yet).

When Win 8 was first released I hated it, but the latest version (which I would label 8.1b) is much improved and I've actually gotten to like it quite a lot, even more than Win 7; if you haven't tried the most current version maybe give it a spin. I haven't benchmarked the performance but it seems quite lightfooted and quick, even on older hardware. The only issue I had installing on my P7811 was the driver for the SD card which I fixed via the last Win7/Vista driver at the manufacturer's Web page.

I do not specifically remember with 8.0 having an issue with the SD reader. I was part of the beta and tried the RTM of 8 but the final straw that kicked it for me was the loss of aero glass on the window borders. They just bother me to no end visually and actually make using any Windows 8 system just too annoying. Thanks though, update one is getting there but they still have a long way to go before making me a convert.

I feel a bit like a traitor, but must confess to succumbing to the siren song of a shiny new MSI GS60 Pro laptop; just too many neat bells & whistles for me to resist at a bargain price that reminds me of the value the P7811FX represented back in the day. So for now old faithful is back in its bag, but I'm sure I'll break it out from time to time as I really do love the thing and the keyboard is maybe my favorite laptop board of all time (right next to the original ThinkPad and Apple's Titanium Powerbook).

First time posting on these forums!
7801u checking in - i've had an ssd in these thing for awhile (imo best bang for the buck)
Now got the upgrade itch so picked up a t9900 to replace the p8400 for $70.

Any roadblocks I might encounter? Should I upgrade the bios? (i'm still on 9c.08.00)

I still do. Am currently looking for way to have a 2nd SSD recognized. The system originally came with 2 HDDs, but I upgraded from Vista to Win7 64 and replaced the HDDs with SSDs, but I've never been able to get the 2nd SSD recognized. Am seraching for a way to do that.

It is not even recognized by the Bios? If not then read the documentation of both drives. They may need to have jumpers for both or either to be slave masters.

Just checking in after a six week hiatus out on the bleeding edge. Back on the 7811 for bit; why doesn't anybody make as good a keyboard these days? Even the MacBook's boards have lost tactile feedback and keypress depth as Apple slimmed the machines down.

Anyway for anyone interested I can say now from experience that for routine tasks like e-mail and Web surfing you give up very little with the FX if you upgrade it with a decent SSD and a 9600 or better CPU. While I wouldn't try to game much a lot of programs even today only use one core and the best bang for the buck is definitely the SSD.

Glad to see the thread is still active: rock on Gateway, rock on; gone but not forgotten!

Well, I bid my 7811FX a sad but final farewell yesterday as I sent it off to Kopila Valley orphanage and school in Nepal. A friend is one of the engineers on a major expansion project there, and I felt that the kids would get a lot more benefit from the machine than I have recently, so I sent it along with him, with my Asus U80V-B2 14" laptop to keep it company.

So in a very real sense it's gone on to a better future and I have few regrets, although it will be missed!

I'm still running my P6831fx I pulled off eBay as a 'dead' laptop about 7 years ago. I upgraded the ram, put in a SSD, threw in a T9300 and honestly, it runs just as good as my new has well cored work laptop. I still game on it, while having to dial back the graphics a bit. Chances are when I upgrade, I'll give it to my youngest brother since his last laptop died.

My P79xx was a W10 machine but it just went back to W7. My primary concern is privacy. Not that ist is not controlable for now but the policies do not reassure this will always be the case.

My 7811FX is still alive. Albeit slow, but man I just can't bring myself to replace it with something newer. The value of this thing shatters anything else I look at. I was close to an Alienware 17R3 with the 4k screen (i mean it has a 980GTX vs this 9800GTS haha) but for the cost, non-removable battery, etc. couldn't do it.

And when you add all the upgrades I was able to do to keep it current, and the fun of tearing it down and rebuilding. Windows 7 Updates no longer work but I was going to re-image it anyway to fix it.

Anyone else replace theirs yet? And with what?

Still alive here as well with my 7805u. I use this thing daily 3-4 hours doing business stuff like Quickbooks, Excel, Word and fun stuff like photo and video editing. Took the back off yesterday to clean it out. Found a little dust bunny in fan area but all in all it looked pretty clean. I have appreciated all those that have helped us in this forum. (Especially TANWare)

I am getting ready to do a disk image to an external drive as I don't know how much longer this great computer will last. But I don't know if a disk image will work on a different computer. Does anyone know?

Don't visit much anymore but still use the old 7811 every night. Still does what is required of it. My Targus/LiteOn 180w power brick finally bite the dust this week though. Brick itself is okay but the wire broke at the flex joint coming out of the brick. And as bad as it sounds I am still using Vista on it, just been to lazy to upgrade it to 7.

The BluRay player I added bit the dust, so have to get another one of those at some point.

    Cheers
    Andy

7811fx still going... upgraded to 500GB SSD + 1TB HD and Intel T9600 dual core. Gong to 8GB mem resulted in BSOD sos still at 4GB.

After 8 years will finally upgrade to something modern. The 7811FX has outlived my wife's 3 Thinkpads, so the 7811fx was cheaper in the long run.

Was completely floored to see this thread still alive and well. Congrats to all the FX owners for keeping them alive this long. I still miss mine thoroughly albeit mostly for nostalgia. And the beautiful screen. And the unique design.

I wonder who of you would think of this laptop as a sort of spiritual successor to the Gateway FX's. Acer owns Gateway so it's not too much of a stretch:

Mine is still going strong. I could have avoided the Samsung upgrade all together. It was nice on occasion to have the extra CPU grunt though.

I've been using mine for image editing and the occasional gaming. As image files have gotten larger, applying changes to those images takes longer to the point of being a real drag on productivity. But the 7811fx has such a nice display for image editing. But since Dell/Alienware came out with their new Alienware 17 (R4), the old model has been discounted. The Alienware 17 R3 (with the 4k screen) has been ordered and should be shipped today, for about what I paid for the 7811fx eight years ago

Not to worry, though. My wife and son are both interested in taking over the 7811fx.
