    Tried it and didn't help/
Is it normal that if I put a windows(like webpage on firefox) above the dead pixel. it becomes white? and goes away if there is none. If I put white window over its more reddish than black.. more of faint red

A dead pixel is a defective item.. I exchanged one at bestbuy no questions asked. Just make sure you point it out, they just send it back to gateway anyhow. But yes, a dead pixel is justified cause for return/exchange. And I still have the disguise from Syn if ya really want it. :)

No luck on the exchange for me. They got pretty upset when I started dropping phrases like "false advertising," etc. wow, so just found out right now that my quote key only works if i press it very hard.

EDIT: yesssssssssssssssssss, i've confirmed that my quote key only works on average 3 out of 7 times that I press it!!! Now I have an excuse to exchange that best buy employees will actually understand!

I exchanged my first one yesterday with the hopes that my new computer would have the new bios (it didn't). They made an exception for that exchange for me, since my technical jargon flew over their heads. So today when I tried again, they weren't so kind, and I went to more than one store, all of them denied my exchange as soon as I mentioned that I just exchanged it yesterday.

By "now I have an excuse", I mean that now I have a defect on my computer that they can actually understand and will have to give me an exchange on.

    Just emailed Gateway.

Not holding my breath. I'm thinking we have total stupidity/apathy/incompetence going on.

I no longer feel sorry for these idiots. Exchange away until you get the correct BIOS.

OK, got myself worked into a RAID BIOS frenzy momentarily.

Gateway support sucks. I dont care what anyone says about it being an american based support team. That just means they read scripts more fluently in english.

"Why can't you please make available the 9C.08.00 BIOS that enables RAID on the P-7811FX. That BIOS is on the new batches and people are able to use RAID.

What can possibly be so difficult about this. Just do it. "

Lol nice. They'll probably just link you to the 94.28 incompatible bios though, thats what they've continually done to me when I asked for the new bios.

Ways in which I've tried to obtain the new bios:

    Tried to flash mistargill's.
    Called Gateway.
    Emailed Gateway.
Called local best buy asking for exchange.
    Tried to flash mistargill's.
Called Best Buy headquarters when exchange was denied.
Went in to local best buy when corporate approved exchange.
Exchanged laptop, new laptop does not have the new bios.
    Tried to flash mistargill's.
Returned to local best buy, second exchange denied.
Went to less local best buy, exchange denied.
    Called corporate, exchange denied.
Googled bios version number, found information in japanese, but no upload.
    Called Gateway.
    Emailed Gateway.
Called Phoenix Technologies (I really did.)
    Emailed Gateway.

Never really tried.. I used winphlash 32 bit..and 64 bit to no avail. In order to do a proper backup, I think I need the original BIOS. Or, would uniflash work? That's the only other program that seems promissing.. *shrugs* I can give it a try. My problem is saving the dam backup on a drive. I cant copy from windows..gotta usb flash boot it. One sec..lemme see if i have my usb stick.

Oh, and is anyone experienced in pin modding? :)

dam..unfortunately I found my usb drive immediately. I was hoping Id have to search for it tomorrow. Kiddin, but really.. Alright, Im in. lemme download uniflash, and if I dont go that route..does the USB store the backup made when attempting to flash with the 94.28 bios?

ok..I may be way off base here..but the 95.05 bios likely is the right size.. not the 94.28..

    1: run winphlash
    2: set back up file
3: set the 94.28 bios as the original.
    4: do just a backup and not a backup/flash

Well.. everything went great..until the backup part. It just sits there saying it's making the backup.. All options worked. Just wont proceed. I'll toy with it tomorrow a bit more. I'm thinking that there is an option not enabled. I may just install vista 32 bit on another hard drive and try from there. But, I believe the 9d.05 bios is the more compatible. It's 1076kb, not 1028 like the 94.28. It's gotta be something of the sort, right? I think at this point all we're looking for is a bios of the right size. I can get a backup off of this computer using winphlash 64 bit.. but I need a 64bit gateway BIOS of proper size. And seeing as they arent too friendly concerning 64 bit.. not happenin tonight. But, I'll give it another shot tomorrow. Im tired, and repeating myself. Peace! :err:

I received a generic reply from Gateway about nothing available at this time and bad BIOS flash voiding warranty. So here is my reply. I only mention this to encourage others to send Gateway similar requests. Squeaky wheel syndrome.
There may be some meeting over morning coffee where Joe tech. says, "Hey Jim, are you getting all these emails asking for a BIOS for the P-7811FX?" and Jim says, "Yea, it's really strange, do we have a new BIOS?" Joe replies, "Yep we do, should we post is so we don't have to reply to all this crap?" Jim responds, "Sure, let's do it."

Syn, I was assuming plenty of people have called gateway in regards to this. Hell, last time - a week ago- when I called to follow up on my original tech issue with the level 2 tech - 3 weeks ago - they told me they were still waiting to hear back from the programming dept. They haven't removed the faulty one from the website yet. New thread idea.. One moment please.

Syn: do you have a direct email address for tech support?

I chatted with gateway this morning they said that the P-7811fx does not support raid. Tech guy said that only the southbridge chipset ICH8ME supports raid capabilities. However, I am not sure what the southbridge chipset is on this laptop so I couldnt give him any come back as to if it did or didnt have the chipset. Anyways, I think maybe the newer versions may have updated southbridge that enables raid. Also, I think it would be kind of strange why they would not have added the raid option if it was capable of doing it just a thought.

ICH8ME/ICH9ME are the installed controllers on the laptop. I'm assuming that means it's supported.. seeing as they're RAID Controllers as well ;) dev. manager -> storage controllers.

john, have you tried uniflash? Im tempted, but scared! ;)

Gateway (as predicted) now linked me to the Godzilla BIOS. I have told them that BIOS is incompatible and tearfully appealed for assistance.

I am trying to open the discussion on another forum of talented Overclockers about backing up the new BIOS and flashing ours. Who knows.

And I've tried backing up my BIOS..not sure why I can't. I gotta run some errands, but will give it a try again later. Lemme knw if you have any luck/ideas.

im beginning to think we cant back it up in dos for the newer bios files.(speculation of course)

only through windows seems to be the only valid solution. (speculation of course)

john..when u flashed your bios did you do it via dos boot or windows? And can you make an editable backup of your current BIOS via windows? If you have a working .wpph or .rom or whatever..you should be able to test the windows backup method. Does it work for you? Cause Im bout to install 32bit vista on this other HD, but dont wanna waste my time if its not gonna work..

I said refund and since I got it from bestbuy.com they told me there is no fee. SO I got my money back without any problem.. and I'm ordering one from online right now :)

i did it using vista 32 bit and xp 32 bit.
dos works great for flashing, but you can not back up the bios for some reason.
you can back it up with 32 bit vista for sure, provided you have the correct bios file to start with.
i can't open my original bios file, but i can flash with it because it was backed up off an original version. (even though the version was older than mine)

Hmm..well, I just made 4 backups of the BIOS via 32bit vista. I used winphlash 1.6.7.7 - 2 backups of each bios, one preserving DMI settings, and one renewing DMI settings. Used 9d.05 and 94.28 as the image to backup from. I'm uploading now to server.. phoenix bios editor wont allow me to look at them. Says invalid rom length. I offer this not to ridicule Gateway. I do appreciate their answers and quick replies (they were surprisingly quick). I do however see something interesting in this reply:
    To be specific:
Is this code for "If I were you I'd take it back"?

Can I take it back even over the 14 day period as the above suggests? Dang I feel like the rest of the noobs here asking that question. :p He was probably referring to some other retailer who allows more than 14 days.

Next I'm gonna be asking "what batch number is that again?" :p

What about the guy who got one out of the 25000+ batch and it had the original BIOS? Things are getting brutal out there.

Syn, I originally called Gway sept. 4th to report the bios issues..ive followed up twice since. Once being today. The level 2 tech I got ahold of which actually a smart guy. He made very detailed notes explaining how the 94.28 is not compatible. He made notes regarding the 9c.08 bios. And he spoke with his supervisor, as well as checked with the engineering dept who still has not answered my original concern. However, he said that it could be resolved as early as Friday. And the new BIOS could quite possibly be on the support site by then. He made no guarantees, but asked that I contact him Friday evening in the event it is not updated at that time. We'll see!
