I have a Gateway 6831fx that I've been using for around a month or two.
It has worked good, did a clean install, played games ect on it.
Earlier today I booted it up for a few minutes, everything working fine. Now when I go to boot it up the mouse/pad do not work. I tried using my recovery disk but I wasn't able to get to it due to how Vista is.
I put in my Xp disc and it began to work when I loaded the disc directly but then stopped once I booted regularly. I really do not want to do a clean install because I have a lot of much needed info on my laptop.
Anyone familiar with this? I haven't dropped it or anything.

Did you by chance disable it unknowingly in the BIOS?
-
try to reinstall the driver. Drivers can be found on the site of gateway
-
I reinstalled the driver. No help.
What do I look for in the BIOS? I haven't even accessed the BIOS before today.
I tried to restore but now its saying there is a Local Disk Error (C and when I try to run my CD I get an error for Grg_Vista.exe or something along those lines.
Not only that but half the time it takes 5 or 6 tries inserting a disk to get it to work. -
I installed the Synaptics driver and then uninstalled it and now the touchpad only works.
I cannot connect a mouse and get it to work. The scroll thing on the touchpad also does not work. -
this happened in my old laptop only it was the mouse that keyboard that wasn't working. Restore your computer to an earlier time.

I had a wicked crash a few weeks ago from using... "alternate" software that I modded out and zigged when I should have zagged. I reinstalled everything and my touchpad was doing the same until I could get ot the driver. -
It won't let me restore.
And no, I installed it right. I did exactly what it said -
call the geek squad.

What kind of mouse are you useing? it sounds like the mouse software is confliting with your touchpad software. Did you install mouse software like logitech or microsoft?
-
Its a Dell Mouse that comes with all Dell computers. It's a brand new one from my dads computer. No software. It worked the first month I use it.
-
I know on my 7426gx Gateway, I had some problems just like that, I use a logitech mouse, when I install the logitech drivers, it says that it knows there is a thouch pad and will not install some componets. Maybe you can install drivers for your mouse.
-
Is there a shortcut, or a fn key to disable the finger pad, like when you are gameing with a mouse and do not need it on?
-
There is the "Disable this device when an external device is plugged in" for the touchpad to be disabled.
-
Thank you, I found that option.
-
When I install the driver, I check under the Mouse area in the Control Panel.
Under Hardware it says something along the lines of "Windows Driver installed but not properly working. File Corrupted or missing." -
did you try to uninstall it, then reboot, then load the driver from gateway.com/support?
-
When you say load form gateway.com/support, you mean redownload it and install it right?
If so, yes I have done that. -
Well it maybe a hardware issue, like the keyboards the finger pads are attached by a ribbon cable most of the time, maybe it is not seated. If so you may need to send it in
Mouse and Pad not working?
