I got some info on this new unit.

Its called the Gateway FX P-7908u.

Comes with a P8700, 500GB HDD (unknown RPM) loaded with WIN7 Premium, and 1GB 260m GTX. Screen resolution is unknown, but its probably 1440x900.

Fry's PLU# is 6059998 and it cost $1279.99. Street date is obviously the 22nd, but stores might not have it then.

Wrong model number. I know its stupidly close (i wish gateway would have chosen another number) but the next one is supposedly going to be a 79xx series.

For that price, I doubt it has Blu-Ray. I hope I'm wrong. ;)

Wow the First gateway with an LED back light... that will make for a really nice screen.

I wish it stated the resolution, but still... thats an impressively nice screen to put in.

(kinda wish the computer i just ordered had the wLED screen :( )

It will be the 1600x900 screen .. All the budget 17inchers with WLED are getting this resolution so no doubt this one will as well..

I like the new art style on the machine and im sure these models will support Quadcores..

I was thinking that as well, but it appears to use the same chassis as the 7901 and 7902 whis is still a 16:10 resolution. Thats why this is so intreating because a 16:10 res screen that uses a wLED back light is VERY rare.

The P7908u is also up on Fry's for pre-order

The specs they have list it as the same 1440x900 screen res as previous models.

Gateway's site lists the P79 series as a 1440x900 as well.

I just looked up the NP8662... You mean the one with the 15.4" screen, right? Cuz... Yeah, it's smaller, doesn't have a number pad on the keyboard, and everywhere I find it for sale, it seems to START at $1270 and go up from there. I'm not seeing where it's a better deal.

I think this IS the 7802u he was referring to. The model is a 7802u, just not a FX. He never did mention that it was a FX. At least that's my guess.

You should have kept the Asus because the new FX wont be much different than a Asus G71GX,unless these new FX notebooks have Intel mobile i7's.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I ordered the P-7908U FX off of Amazon and will get it Friday. I'm still watching for other, potentially better laptops though. This one looked kind of interesting, would a lower-clocked quad be worth it, and what would the size and battery life be? Is there any reason they should be better than the G71s? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9568149&type=product&id=1218125774394 Thanks for creating such an awesome thread guys. ;)

Well, the Asus would have been a home run if it has a better cooling system. The inability to overclock the Gateway is a big Con for me. It's a toss up really. Performance wise, the Asus is better.

Thanks, are the new Asus's not underclocked anymore? I saw a few new ones at Newegg also. I'm on my phone using Skyfire browser so no hyperlink for you guys, sorry. Go to their laptop's and do advanced search for GTX260m. They have an older model for 1050 or so with a t9600 and a 1080p screen. It's the G51 not the 71 though.

I am thinking that unless something else comes out that's much better, I'll stick with my Gateway. Newegg has an i7 G51 for $1500 but I don't want to imagine the battery life and the price isn't worth it for me. I'd only need a WUXGA screen if I get a Blu-ray drive and that won't be happening soon. I don't need to overclock I don't think, as I'm used to a pentium d 820 on my desktop, lol. Thanks for all the help. I'll probably post my impressions this weekend when I get my laptop if I'm not overburdened with school. Engineering major+homework=no social life :).

Is there any word if bestbuy will have a 1 of these gateway laptops. only reason i would pick 1 up is if it had a 7200rpm drive and a 1080p lcd or a 1600x900 lcd. i could careless that the 6gigs of ram my asus has my systems doesn't even come close to using all 6gigs. would pick up the asus G61 put the res on it sucks.

I dunno... From what's being posted in this thread, rumor is that BestBuy will be getting the 7902 and the 7915.

I might be in Delaware on Sunday, which is the ETA listed above for Best Buy getting these in. Might make a sales-tax-free purchase if they have the particular model that fits my needs best. :-D

Now... If anybody has any news on which model comes pre-loaded with a BluRay drive... That will be awesome. [IMG]

What's the 7915? I haven't heard anything about that one. The only things that would make it worth it in my opinion would be blu ray and/or WUXGA and possibly a better processer.

What's sup with the "I need Blu-ray on my notebook" hype? If I wanna watch blu-ray, I want to do it through my home theater system, not through some whimpy 17" notebook.

    HDMI out, my friend.

    Currently, I have a home office in which I have a self-built desktop with a dual-monitor setup.

However, I'm going to be a father within the next eight months and the baby will need a room. Thus, I'm getting kicked out of my office.

Sooooo... The I'm purchasing a laptop (99.9999999% chance it will be a P-79xx FX Series) which will practically live in the living room where I have a Sharp Aquos 42" LCD that incidentally accepts HDMI output. [IMG]

Well, not all of us have a home theater system. Some of us are poor college students with just enough scholarship money to get a decent laptop in addition to an education. My main TV is a 5 year old 32 in CRT with integrated speakers. This would be the best screen in my house, and I'd just use some of my good headphones for sound.

It wont be so bad, the baby wont need much more than a changeing table and bed for about 7 months of that... you have at least until they start crawling, then you dont have time for blurays :p (at least i didnt with my little girl)

wow how times change, when i was in college i had a 19in CRT with a built in VCR :p Now people have 32in TV's and want 1080 movies. :D

On topic (sorry about the side posts)
The Gateway will probably not have bluray... though until they are put out on the shelves it might be impossible to tell with out a BB worker being our spy and finding out ;)
If it doesnt luckily BR drives go for pretty cheap and its honestly the easiest upgrade on the FX series... one screw on the bottom then slide the old drive out and the new one in. Done

Haha, I was honestly a little afraid I would come off as arrogant or rude with how I worded that, though that wasn't my intention. The sad part is though, I'm still living at home with my family and that's our main TV, haha. But, back on topic, I'm just waiting and seeing what Best Buy has. Come on Best Buy workers, we can't wait another day to find out. :)

No not really. Just about 160 pixels wider in resolution.

I'm still excited to see the new LED screen that gateway is releaseing with this new model... thats a pretty big deal, and should make a VERY good screen no matter what resolution

    Hi,

Looking into buying a Gateway P-7908u FX Edition 17-Inch (Windows 7 Home Premium) but, I am not familiar with the brand or the quality of this laptop....How is their quality?...Anybody own one of these, or Knows Something About this New Model?

Does anyone knows if the new Gateway P-7908u is similar or have the same quality as the Gateway P-7809u?

Since I have been reading some bad reaviews of the Gateways Cust. Service, I would like to know Something about Their support?

It is tru that the Gateway P-7908u FX Edition 17-Inch, comes with the latest LED Display?

How its the Gateway P-7908u compare with the ASUS N51Vn-A1 and the Dell Studio XPS 16?

    Thanks for your help!!

    Ulises Rodriguez
