If I could get the 17 bios on here I'd pich up a cpu and try it out. The 12 I have is almost a sure thing to fail so I won't intentionally waist money........

Pmassey, I understand what you are saying. It's your hard earned money... it comes down to you making up your mind. Whatever you decide is all that matters... not what we think... it's just that I felt you were up to doing it because you gave us signs that you were serious about purchasing a processor. Again, it's your own money.

    Help Please.
I was a tool and did not backup my BIOS
    I had 9C.17.00
    Downloaded 7811_BIOSES.zip
Installed the latest version in there.
and realized I down-graded my laptop to 9C.12.00
    It boots ok.
    I have a 7805u

For the life of me, I can not locate 17 anywhere nor any thing other than the pre 17 one that may brick my system.

    Thanks for the help.

    ----------------
    update
    ----------------
because I just bought it. I took it back to BestBuy and said it would randomly cut out.
They gave me a new box and all it well
    thanks

Yup. You F'ed yourself right in the A! But it's cool .12 is a fine and stable BIOS. I've been running it since E-wrecked originally posted. :) So far nobody has really seen any gains because of .17 or any BIOS really other than that .05 the one that originally came with the 7811 didn't support RAID. what a joke

    hi,

I think that one way to bakup the bios correctly would be to use the only software (in windows) that actually flashes it successfully.

The Wflash64 utility from Wistron, which is the executable that has the 9c.12 Bios embedded in it ( you can find it in the first post of this tread from Ewrecked, is in the 7811_BIOSES.zip).

Once you open this application it runs on its own. You can’t stop it (we all know it).
My guess is that maybe using some sort of command line, we would be able to override all or a part of the execution of the tool.

Here is what I have been trying:

Download a Hex viewer here http://www.chmaas.handshake.de/delphi/freeware/xvi32/xvi32.htm#download

Then download the 7811_BIOSES.zip in the first post of this thread (in the first page).

If like me you are using a 64bit version of windows, open from the Hex editor the 32bits executable of the bios flash utility. The 64 version might give trouble unless you use a 64bits Hex editor.

All you have to do is to read within the file itself.
Go to find (within the hex editor) and type a word like “options” or “force” without quotation marks.

If you read carefully in some areas you’ll find important and interesting info about this utility.

For instance it explains precisely the set of instructions that the utility has to follow in order to successfully flash the bios.

Among these there are options to avoid any interaction with the interface (this is why all buttons are grayed out), then to check the bios image, check for power supply connected, reboot the system after flash ect ect… you’ll find out.

Now, although I have extensive experience in modding pc hardware, hacking software in general, ect, since probably 1993 in either DOS environment and win 3.1 and with very old version of macintosh as well; I am no programmer and I understand very little in programming and hex editors in general.

I have used hex editors before for very simple stuff, like changing a binary sequence to hack software, have never gone any further than that though.

Maybe someone out there with great understanding in programming, coding or whatever, can either understand a way to implement a command line that would actually backup the bios before flashing it, or maybe allow us to access the flash utility interface (that’d be awesome).

So far I created a shortcut of the flash utility then applied a few command lines to it like:

    /force
    /reboot
    /f:filename.bin

And some others that I found with the hex editor.

Of course these command lines are useless, but I used them for test purposes.

In fact, if you misspell them or type something completely different the application will throw an error message, but if you type them in correctly, the flash starts just like normal meaning that the application will recognize command lines.

So my guess is that we need a switch or a command line in order to get what we want.

Maybe multiple eyes out there work better than just two.

    Please try it.

Also, my intention is not to annoy, but to help out. Really!
I have asked this question only twice and almost started getting nasty messages back... lol...

but, if someone out there who has a DOS version of the BIOS, typically something like this: filename.WPH
Please post it or send it to me. I have a few ideas I want to try but I can’t without a valid BIOS.

Any attention to the above is very much appreciated,
    thanks

    Hi guys,

So I've been reading through the thread, and perhaps I missed this. About the fan spin up/down when idling has anyone found any bios that is preferable? Does Gateway acknowledge this issue?

Lastly, how would I go about obtaining the latest bios, I am not seeing them on the gateway website, and I am lost in this thread (whew, building my own PC was easier than updating the laptop).

I have the .17 bios and I just tried using this. I had to boot off of a floppy to do it, and it let me save a .dmp file of the bios. It's a 64kb file - don't know if that's too small to actually be the whole bios.

You don't need to install all the updates. Each BIOS is self contained (they aren't cumulative).
As for battery calibration what are you trying to do?

well i just got this laptop (the 7811 FX) and the first thing i noticed is that it doesn't want to to charge more than 11% i tells me "11% available (plugged in, not charging)" so i looked up in forums and the said i had to update my BIOS cause some off the update of vista makes the system loose it or something... well the thing is i want my laptop to charge up to 100% cause now i just have a fancy and shining little desktop (if you know what i mean...) and that's the thing i just don't want... anyway's i read that battery calibration could be usefull but i can't seem to find it in the BIOS
so right now i am more than desperate... :S

I had the same problem with my battery. There is no battery calibration tool in the bios 9c.05 as far as I can tell. I haven't checked 9c.12. As per Gateway support another way to recalibrate your battery is to let it drain completely and then recharge fully (I think with the comp off). When that didn't work for me either, they sent me a new battery. New battery works fine.

Okay, there's several people here on the forums now that have had the mythical .17 BIOS on their new Gateways for weeks now. I've been sitting here quietly waiting for it to be dumped and posted to this thread. And I'm still waiting and so are many other people. What's the deal? Can someone spell it out and define what the problem is in getting a copy of this BIOS to the rest of us? There didn't seem to be any problems dumping the previous versions. What is the problem with .17 that makes it impossible to dump? And is there anything I can do to speed up this process? I'd like to get this new version installed on my 7805u asap.

The other versions weren't dumped... E-Wrecked aquired them from winstrom... (or whatever the name of the BIOS development is that gateway uses???)

And he no longer has a 7811FX (or any notebook right now for that matter) so you can't blame him for not harrassing anybody too hard lately...

Ah, so that's the key detail. No one has been able to dump a BIOS off of one of these laptops period. Okay, that makes sense.

I have the .17 BIOS on mine but honestly have no idea how to dump it. Anyone wanna try to post some links or walk through cause I'll gladly try. A search just brings up all kinda 'junk'. Anyway.....
