I get the point, the chipset generates the signals. Again unless the board has the traces cut to the socket the socket just passes the signals to the cpu. now during the trace down from the socket to the chipset they can cut or jumper or dip the connections. So I am agreeing with you to a point. You are just saying it as the glass is half empty, I am saying it is half full...........![]()

BTW, a small correction and something to point out too...
I mentioned earlier that pin AE-8 is connected to a voltage source. I was incorrect; VSS is ground, Vcc is a voltage source.
The other thing is, Core2 is still based on the old A/GTL+ bus. So, Core2 is still using BREQ lines for multi cpu configurations. The only difference here being the cpu's are all on one core. -
OK, I get ya now.
That's why I was saying earlier that most likely you'd need jumper wires, nail polish, a razor blade, and nerves of steel.
You'd have to figure out where the signals are terminating near the socket, cut or block the pins from getting to ground, reroute the grounded pins to the required lines, and then pray the whole thing doesn't go up in smoke.
Why oh why couldn't they have made it as easy as AMD did back in the day to OC their chips?
All you needed back then was a rear window defogger repair kit, or even a pencil.
-
Oh yeah, something to get the gears turning for those with the guts to tinker with this:
http://www.thetechrepository.com/showthread.php?t=87
Look specifically at the photo of the Bad Axe 2 board; he shows the reference points for the A/GTL+ logic points. If our boards were designed from the get-go to eventually support quad core, they may have just connected the points to ground using a similar scheme as on this board. Again, it's a big IF though!
Hey e-wrecked, any chance you can convince Acer to provide us with the schematic diagram for the 7805 motherboard?
-
It could be anywhere from just simply removing the cmos battery to reset the tables to allow for quadcore all the way to a major hack of the mainboard and replacement of the soldered in chipsets, or just about anywhere inbetween. If it is proved a simple dip switch or solder and empty jumper block, I may be in. My days of reinventing the wheel are over, and I'm leaving well enough alone this time...........
-
It is safe to say then that quad core is not possible for current 78XX owners without making physical modification to the notebook.
Oh well- C'est lavie. -
So, at the end, just enjoy the T9900 or the X9100!!!
A quick question....does the 7808 support the QX9300??? -
It probably would, but it'd be a question if the cooling solution can handle the extra 10w of heat, and if the voltage regulators can handle the extra power draw.
Oh well... I had my eye on the T9900 anyways. In a couple of years I'll upgrade to laptop with a multi-core Core I7 (or whatever they'll call it then). I'm still very happy with my 7805.
-
Yeah low clocked quads are way over rated for gaming right now anyway.
In a year or two or three etc... when we're all ready to upgrade notebooks we can get the bigger and better and it will make more sence at that time. -
any news for the .17 bios guys? anyone managed to dump it for the rest of us??
-
That sucks, it was even worst for me, bought a QX9300 and Q9100 to try in the old M860TU, I lost about $250 in the end reselling and wasted a month (delayed shipping etc...)
-
What bios should i use on a Gateway Fx P7811 using Windows 7 Beta latest build.
-
If it isn't broken don't fix it. You can forget quad support for now too. There doesn't seem to be any major fixes between the versions so if all is well then your upgrade should be fine with the version you have.
-
If you are using .05 and want RAID0 support use .08 or higher otherwise, you might as well let it go. some say .12 helps the fan bursts...
-
Bought a reconditioned 7811 in January but now I want to install raid, installed .12 but when I go to enter the bios it asked for a password. Is this normal? Do I just clear the bios now?
I read though most of the 115 pages but I didnt see anything about this.
Any help would be great. -
Bummer,
It appears the person that owned your reconditioned laptop before you set up an admin password in the BIOS.
I'm not sure how to clear this, but I imagine one of the boards many guru users know how. -
I didn't bother to respond, not because I'm arrogant, but this is a common fix that I figured there would of been a tons of replies by now. BIOS information is very easy to clear one of three ways.
First, unplug and remove the battery from the notebook, turn the notebook over and look for a small hole about the size of a pin hole with an arrow pointing toward it, this is the rest button. Press and hold it for 30 seconds. I have no clue where it is on this notebook. If all else fails, call Gateway, there should be one darn button located somewhere very very simple that needs to be pushed (first one) that most notebooks have. They should throw you a friggen bone.
Second, remove the CMOS batter for 30 seconds, again remove notebook battery and unplug notebook. Turn it over and remove cover for CPU/RAM. Under the wifi card you'll see a black round thing that looks like it might be the battery. Unplug it from the mobo and wait 30 seconds, plug it back in and you should be good to go. This was the only thing I saw when took it apart that looked like it might be the CMOS battery, this supplies power to store the bios saved settings. Removing it resets the BIOS...hopefully.
Third, BIOS reset switch on the mobo, no idea where it is. Might involve taking the whole damn thing apart. Not recommended, good luck.
*EDIT* CHATTING WITH GATEWAY RIGHT NOW.
*EDIT2* If you guys want I can post the chat log here, fun times. To sum it up, he told me to do a factory restore, I told him that wouldn't work, he checked with his supervisory who told him the same thing, then double checked if I had a refurbed and decided he couldn't help me and gave me a phone number for their refurb center (1-866-243-1450) and I asked if they can help me free of charge and he said yes. After 39 minutes of being on hold I said screw them (I love 2-3k roll over minutes)!

Hm, 1 post. Well people place the passwords to protect the system if stolen. I would suggest you call and get your system registered and they,Gateway, can help you fix it. Even the manual tells you to contact them. Where are the MOD's..............
-
Some how "look before you leap" comes to mind right about now. Maybe I should of "read before I posted"...oh well. At least he didn't ask about disabling the LowJack on his 7811, that could of been embarrassing (not alot of people know this model has it build into its mobo).
-
I have a p-7805u with bios 9c.11.00 is there an upgrade for this bios or am i ok to run a t9800 on the one i have. Also if there is a newer version where do i get it? Thanks
-
The FTP appears to be down - anyone have another link?
-
i installed the 9c.12.00 and the mic and ear phone plug arnt working, but its not that huge of a deal for me. sucs though
-
does the 78xx series support quad core cpu yet?
-
No, it does not and it never will...most powerful CPU upgrade available is the T9900
-
For the P78xx-u's with included dual cores the T9900 or T9800 is the highest end cpu. With the P7812-u or P7802-c, both with included q9000, then quad core upgrades are an option.
-
Uh, isn't the 7808u a Quad core with the Q9000?
-
can't seem to flash my notebook with 9c.12.00, I have 9c.10.00 installed currently. The 64bit Winflash, doesn't seem to friendly with SP2. Any advise?
-
Thought it was the 7812, but yes the p7808-u.............
-
I just picked up my 7805u a few days ago and I figured I would see what BIOS everyone is using. Mine came with 9C.17.00, but I don't see anyone mentioning anything about this rev. Anyone know if it's common yet?
-
For the newer P78xx's the 9c.17.00 is common. With the recent P7805's this is a common bios revision, the earlier ones, such as my own, usually came with the 9c.11.00 bios revision
-
I too have 9c.17.00 - it seems to run just fine.
-
Is there somewhere the 9c.17.00 can be downloaded?
In other words, is the 9c.17.00 available for download?
-
Not as of yet. Others have tried to back it up and then make it available not nothing yet. Hopefully one day, but it doesn't seem Gateway is too cooperative about this...............
-
Well, I have a p-7805u with the .17 bios and it has serious gpu pulsating fan issues as reported with earlier bios versions. I actually installed hwmonitor to see when/why this was happening.
I found that when the gpu temp rises to 47c the fan pulsates up and down until the temp drops down to 41c. At that point the pulsating stops and I really can't tell if the fan is on or not but if it is, I would say it is spinning at only 5-10% because i can't hear/feel it.
Now the only point at which the temp is ever at about 47c is when I'm just browsing or doing small simple tasks that do not put a load on the gpu, so this is the only time that this occurs. When gaming the temp obviously rises into the 60s-70s at which point the fan is on at a constant steady pace.
I have actually been debating flashing to an earlier bios to try and remedy this, but I want to make sure my bios is available to flash back to just in case. -
long time lurker, first time poster. Recently purchased a P-7805u with X9100. Would like to OC it but the general consensus from what i have read is that the max. is 3.0GHz.
What puzzles me is the first post of this thread where it mentions bios support for X9100 (compatible with P-7805u) yet everyone is saying you cant OC?
Clarification plz. Dont really wanna blindly flash an older bios and still find that i cant OC my X9100. Do SetFSB/RMClock work on the P-7805u as well?
thanks -
RMclock works just fine. Dont think setfsb works.
None of the bios have OCing available. -
ah ok.
However, why has this been stated in E-Wrecked's initial post:-
this is what confused me in the first place. -
Kamin_Majere =][= Ordo Hereticus
Mostly saying that while its possible to OC on the FX series its just not going to be given to us as an option.
same in the 68xx series. My x9000 runs at 3.0gHz idleing around 34 degrees... i could easily push a 3.4-3.6 OC and still not break thermal limits, but gateway wont allow it so i'm stuck at 3.0gHz.
Though i am curious if the 7808 can OC the qx9300 past 2.53gHz... as far as i know no one has tried it -
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
The problem is finding a 7808 (or 7808 user) and a QX9300 together.
Nevermind the fact you can't find 7808's anywhere online. -
I have a Gateway 7811FX and I've had no luck at all with these BIOS updates. 9c.10 causes my headset and microphone jacks to stop working. 9c.12 causes the built-in webcam to stop working. Gonna try 9c.09 now and see if that has any use at all.
-
The BIOS should not have that sort of affect on your in-built peripherals. Are you sure you're not having driver issues?
-
He must be having driver issues. I upgraded to .12 and had that same webcam problem. All I had to do was reinstall the driver.
-
Wow looks like you guys have done your homework on these notebooks! I'm quite impressed at this forum to say the least. There's just one thing I'm not very clear about; can I use this new revision of the bios for my Gateway FX P-7805u?
I've tried to skim through the forum as much as humanly possible in the last 20 minutes. Sorry if this is a question that has been answered time and again. I'm in the military and one thing I don't have is TIME. Sadly, I just have to ask many stupid questions. Well thank you for all your help!
Oh yes, last question... Will gateway honor there warrenty if you brink your laptop during a flash? -
my laptop was bought with an accidental damage warranty which i think is necessary. Even without that, gateway should fix it for you if all you are doing is upgrading the bios. if u got if from a retailer like bestbuy without a extended warranty, you may incur a charge.
-
Thank you for the information MistaChy. How about the bios question?
Will these revisions work for the Gateway FX P-7805u? -
Yes, all BIOS support functions on the p7801, and p7805U FX Series
-
Nice thread but maybe a noob question. What is the advantage of upgrading bios? And also why was the author of this thread banned?
-
I wasn't really banned.
And unfortunately, I don't have the time to frequent NBR as much as I used to. To answer your other question, BIOS upgrades typically control fan speeds, voltage distributions, hardware support, etc and these also include the GPU strings. Anyhow, miss you all!
-
This is a question for E-Wrecked. With these new bios' you can actually overclock the CPU? I'm very confused....
I've read all over the forums that you can't overclock the CPU. Then on the front of your post it says you can, and there's quad core support?
I guess, I'm really confused. Not just a little at this point.
Can you please specify if the upgrade of these bios' can give the ability to overclock or support quad core?
Thank you very much E-Wrecked
, P.S. -> I'm glad you aren't banned... I was a bit leery of your advice on your posts given you were banned. Or at least it looked as if you were banned. Perhaps you might wanna change it to semi-banned
-
The link to the windows and DOS packages dont work? How can i get the latest BIOS?
Never mind i just downloaded the bios variety package. After i extracted i opened the program and it was done running my computer restarted. Does that mean i successfully got the new bios?
