now that depends on who is doing the slaying...put us in the same sager we are going up against.... do you think the out come would be the same? me personally...i think not.! sager would come out on top...*LOL* "it's all in what you know" but yes, the fx line from gateway has made a few people sit back and readjust their line of thinking in terms of gaming.! glad i was here to help that become a reality! and just because you have sli, doesn't mean you have to always use it as well. sort of like a twin turbo. you dont use it most of the time during normal driving, but when you need to...boy...does she really kick in!

I think anyone who has a 7811 would love to have a sager instead if they didn't care about the prices as much. Not to say sagers are overpriced, in fact they're priced as they should be, the 7811s are just extremely underpriced. and I figured instead of getting a sager I would get the 7811 and a decent 37" flatscreen for the same price

Jak, good choice sir.. Especially with it being football season an' all :)

Side note: BIOSMAN accepted my requests to mod the BIOS. He's in the process of doing so right now.. Only one problem, he emailed back and said that he is getting an error when trying to read the BIOS files. Based on the particular error, he believes it is his software not being current with this BIOS. And so, he's going to find a newer version in order to modify the settings. *still crossing fingers* I mean, if BIOSMAN can't unlock the options..and well, seeing as it's his career.. then I'd have to think Wistron may be the only other option. Nevertheless, he is working on it now.. :)

ask him to do the 6860 please sir. thank you! his software will read that code fine.

side note: yes, they are all over priced, but there comes a time in a mans life when he just says.."i gotta have the top of the line just once" been buying mid range for quite some time now. and just like E, i put in close to 2500$ in the 6860fx. and now it's worth about $1500.00 i put money into my hp dv9740. well if you look at the total. i could have been had a top of then laptop.*lol* and would only need to up grade cpu's as they come out. since sli will be running super strong by then. well...now is that time to say...go for a (budget top of the line sager) and upgrade from there. *LOL* i have drives & high end memory & a screen if need be, i just dont have two 9800's laying around. *L* and i dont care about battery because im tethered to the wall, but if you run this thing in all low mode...im sure you can get a few hours out of it. (speculation of course)

Yay got into the BIOS using f10. Should probably ask them if they can fix that, F2 doesn't work at least for me >_>

Anyway, I don't like how the raid utility lets you config the raid everytime it boots.. I want to be able to hide that somehow lol.. the idea of anyone deleting the raid array is scary -_-

    That would be groovalicious!

I'm also eying the competition such as Sager and Dell XPS. Not saying I'm definitely going to make the jump, but I have long loved the look and feel of the 1720/1730 and the solidness of the Sager line cannot be denied. Although the Sagers are a bit "bland" in my opinion, this can easily be rectified through various methods. I love the 6860 and the price-performance ratio is unprecedented, which is keeping me on the fence.

yeah, these things are really great for the money, hands down! although sager is trying with the 5763 at 1799.99 which is actually better. considering you would upgrade the cpu for about 225-400 bucks.

but the down fall...you can't just walk in a store and try it/buy it thing. i think if they did with this lastest model..... might have a few folks switching....

did you see them spec's dook?

oh yeah...not big on a styler since it's pretty much for work and playing...*LOL* and i was looking at the xps, but they are out there on price and no 9800m duals yet.

Most definitely. That's pretty kickanus. And don't get me wrong on the style, I'm not talking about 200 flashing Christmas lights, flags waiving, horns blowing and trucker mudflap girl decals. However I do like an occasional well placed LED and/or some tasteful laser engraving.

    but of course!

i heard someone complaining about the 7811 lights were too bright... i was like...huh? guess you better read the manual and learn how to shut them off. most laptops you cant do that with. now should they have made the numbers brighter? but of course. am i complaing? he.ll to the nah! i would sure hate to give this one up, but i may have to make room for the sager. and i can't have my g-way competing for my quality time. the hpdv9700 can...*LMAO*

Hey Amazed! Used Fresh install from os disc supplied with computer and driver disc burned from Gateway recovery program. Yes, my Bios settings can't be accessed unless I do the F-10 and then choose setup from menu. Haven't tried reenabling quite boot yet to see if that helps. Tried X-fastest Driver 177.85 but couldn't seem to get it to work. Don't have language translator, so couldn't find modded inf file. Driver cleaner link from some other thread doesn't seem to work with Vista 64, might have to purchase online.

E-wrecked and Jackamo5, did ya'll notice Vista being more responsive when stripe size set to 16,32, or 64? Just doesn't seem that RAID 0 gave me much boost at 128. Or could that be CPU limited? I've burned an image of array with Acronis, so could reset array fairly easily.Thanx again!!!

LOL. That was in this thread. lewwhateverhisnameis was trying to tell people the 9600GT (in an hp dv7t) is garbage. I was like, huh? Its no 9800/8800, but it plays games relatively fine. Some people are just so snobby to anything they don't deem "up to their standards". It's really silly. But it's all good, I told him to PM me if he wanted to continue the discussion. ;)

Plus I'm a huge MST3K fan and figured it was time to give Mike n the boys some avatar action. :)

Yea, I hear ya there! I've done some fantasy builds on the 9262 on a few sites as well. Wish I could've pressed the Buy button. :)

I've been looking at the XPS 1730...HARD. Something about that laptop REALLY interests me. I'm actually considering a possible downgrade to the "horrible" 8700 GT to get one decently priced. I'm not a real huge gamer, so I doubt it would make too much difference to me. Although I am pretty spoiled on the 8800, so who knows. And again, for the time being, this is all fantasy, as money is currently pretty tight. But if someone offered me an even trade, I'd have a hard time not jumping on it. ;)

The funny thing is, I havent one issue with my 6860 at all. Love it to pieces, I'm just one of those guys that likes to switch things up.

hahahahaha, yeah, boy do i like to switch things up for real! had the 7811 for 5 days. ran great! only had to worry about the tzs0 when i did serious over clocks. when i ran better than average clocks, it never hit past 80c's. i hear ya about the cash, but me...i wouldn't do a full blown system..just get the hardest parts first. (dual 9700m gt cards) and run everything else as is. then upgrade at a later date. desktop cpus are allot cheaper than mobile's plus they are easier to be had and tried. just jack your local neighbor for his or hers...*LOL*

and as for the xps..i keep looking for a card other than a 8700m. 8800m's would be hella nice over 8700's. and technically i dont play that many games myself. but im getting to the point that i want my laptop to be as fast as my desktop (gtx280). just in case i do decide to play a game or too...wooohooo. *LOL*

Thanks for the info; that's the Vista & driver installation procedure I used. I went into BIOS and found the "quiet boot" still enabled so that option didn't present itself. I cycled "disabled/enabled" and rebooted but F2 still didn't respond. I will try to disable/save/reboot; then reverse that and see if it holds. I'm not too concerned as long as we can get to the BIOS, heh. I'm using the laptopvideo2go's 178.15 nvidia driver and so far it's fine.

I do have a query about the drivers on the Gateway disc:

What is the Intel Wireless LAN Shirley Peak FMC and Marvell Wireless LAN.n for? I only installed the Intel WiFi and Marvell Lan NIC drivers for internet access and they seem to doing okay. If they are speed related or needed for my use of a Cradlepoint Router that I use at work, then I should probably install them. I just want to keep this baby as lean as possible.

Last but not least; I am "completely" satisfied with this P-7811 FX notebook. I mean the price is totally untouchable for the specs, the quality is okay and they also included a Vista Home Premium 64bit/32bit OEM install disc as well. I purchased mine at BB last month for $1249 and they threw in a $50 game. Where else are you gonna find this kind of value for a " GAMING" notebook? :)

Emailed him a copy of 94.28 as well.. should be an easy deal for him. :)

No need to mod the .inf for 177.85 by Xfastest.. just download your version, clean current drivers, then run the setup.exe from within the extracted folder 177.85 creates. Done. :) You can download here http://www.xfastest.com/viewthread.php?tid=12852&extra=page=1

BIOSMAN did reply, his email was a bit confusing..not sure if he meant he was stuck, or if he had any success with opening it..
    His Email response:
    Erik,

opening the bios is not an issue. Its editing it. The tools I use are specific to AMI, Phoenix or AWARD. neither works. the .wph should have opened with the Phoenix tool.

    Rob,
One more thing.. I'll try to clue ya in as much as possible. Wistron is the company who produced the BIOS. They're a huge company in Taiwan.. and they have a program WFLash..both 64 and 32 bit.. that's the winflashers obviously. but, it's known as WistronFlash. Not Winflash. I downloaded a copy from Acer..seeing as that's one of their main clients. I'm attaching a version of the WFlash for 32 bit.. Couldnt find a 64bit version, yet. But, maybe if you have this it can give you some assistance, or offer more insight. Unlike the other .exe I sent you previously, this one is not set to auto-flash. It's more like the WinPhlash interface, and allows you to backup BIOS etc. Maybe with one of the options available it can allow you to pull the BIOS apart. I'll toy with it myself when I go home today..but thought maybe you'd appreciate it. Like yourself, I haven't been able to open the .rom or .wph files with any editors.. Anyhow, I do appreciate your assistance..and I look forward to a resolution. :)

    thanks,
    Erik G

Amazed, I've tried plenty of drivers..it seems the most stable, and overclocks well.. but I'll leave that for you to decide. Here's the 7811FX GPU Thread

E-wrecked, you mentioned that you use ntune to OC. I downloaded it and when I start nvidia monitor, my laptop bluescreens, and when I open ntune and click on performance and then agree to the eula, my laptop bluescreens. tried uninstall and reinstall, no good. am I out of luck or have you heard of this problem before?

all of the forums I look at in relation to this problem say "uninstall ntune" and "install everest" but that really doesn't help haha, I'm trying to get a program that won't have to stay open to keep the OC on

I concur. :) that BSOD thing was quite annoying. But yea, the latest version should fix all of those issues.

EDIT: Is it just me, or has the Gateway forum all but came to a screaching halt? Very few new posts, that often.. Guess that's a good sign.. Everyone is happy with their 7811 and content without needing more support. I guess we've all covered pretty much anything and everything, eh?

Hi all! A few questions from the eager but clueless (that would be me!) I've read through these posts, plus others specific to RAID on this laptop, and I'm confused. Stripe size, seperatating volumes for os and data. It all seems intriguing, and maybe I've missed something (a little bleary eyed at the moment). Right now I stand with one RAID 0 volume with a 128 stripe size. I've burned an image of it with Acronis. Vista 64 seems a little sluggish, but maybe I'm expecting too much. Have previously had raid with raptor drives in XP on a desktop machine, and it was night and day difference from single drive. I know these aren't raptors, and I don't remeber what that array was striped at (default). I'm considering entire reformat like Jackamo suggested (two volumes, 16 stripe with os and 128 stripe with data) but read on another thread where that seemed problematic. Also, i f I do two volumes, where would drivers go? Could also just reset array with acronis image to one volume with a different stripe size. Or should I just be happy with what I have? Thanks in advance for any reply!!! :)

oh yeah...you can use as5 or higher on the northbridge. just use enough to lightly cover the die then make sure it touches by just setting it down and tightening the screws, then undo them all and lift the heat sink and see if the as5 is on the heat sink. if so, then your good to go and it will work. if not. put your pad back on and call it a day...lol

edit: do not let as5 touch component pieces.

This really is agreat thread, and you pro's should realize how many youv'e helped. I imagine you all should get a kickback from gateway (or at least on OC-able BIOS) :p . You may be blacklisted from BB, but all us uninitiated love ya (pour on the sap!)

E-wrecked, thanks for link to driver, did you notice and improvement in responsiveness of system when you went from 128 stripe to 32?

I thought mine was a tad sluggish also at first. But just this morning I turned on my desktop (Intel Core2Duo E8400 3.0 gHz, 8800GTs in SLI, 2x Raptor 150's RAID 0) and no more than 2 seconds later turned on my P7811FX no mods other than RAID 0 (64kb stripe per E-wrecked's recommendation) and my desktop played the Vista welcome sound exactly 2 seconds prior to my notebook. That made me feel great about my notebook, but it sure made me question my desktop performance... YIKES! I ran across another website somewhere that also verified 2 Raptors in RAID 0 being beaten in performance tests by a single Maxtor drive.... OMG!, Tell me it isn't so!

It seems as though the new laptop setup is getting faster each day. Could that be due to the Vista's way of indexing files or sumpin'?

Good Points, Amazed! This is my first experience with Vista, and it has gotten better after some time has passed. It also seems that turning down some of Aero's effects has helped. What stripe size did you end up using? Any overclocking yet? Did you install E-wrecked's driver from link?

Boy, I can remember how my desktop felt after that install of Raptors. I had gotten original 36 Gigers, but those things flew!!!Have a single Velociraptor in my uATX Desktop now.

Well..my RAID volume also seems to be speeding up as time passes.. This is a screen shot, using the "Accurate" settings maxed, and 8MB for testing purposes.. My burst was 175 when I first installed RAID, now its over 1000..not sure it matters really. Oh, and my access time dropped from 15.0ms to 14.7ms. Anyhow, all is running smoothely. :)

no man.. I lost the thread, it was in my favorites but disappeared with the vista re-install. Lemme see if I can find it. And I'll run now..

Oh, and I tried AS5 on the northbridge last time. It didnt work for me. TZS0 went insane, quicklike. But, I can try again. :) - I think the gap is too big.

EDIT: Im at work, and normally dont have my laptop here. I just realized ya gotta have the Crysis CD to run the benchmark. And of course, it's at home. I'll try to make sure I run it once I get home.. Added the thread back to my favorites. :)

yeah, do the test first to make sure that it touches the heat sink first. remember. do not force or put pressure. jjust set it on top and screw it down. then un screw it and lift it upp and see if you see the as5 on the heat sink. if you dont. then it's probably not going to work. it does work on the 6860. im using it now

you dont need the dvd, just go to the program directory where you in stalled it and run it from there. i think you may need to run the game once from the bin directory at least once. (speculation of course). that's how i ran mine and it worked without the dvd.
