Sorry, sometimes my mind is all over the place and rather then type in a readable way I just type the way my mind is thinking.

What I was asking is, had anybody replaced the thermal pads on the heatsink?

Don't worry about it though because, after thinking about it, I think my ambient room temperature is alittle higher then it used to be. We'll see.

Sorry for the weird typing :D

That was in reference to the attached images in the post I quoted.

This is one of the pictures-

There are a few different programs. I use HWMonitor- I think the 64bit version is the one that shows you all the temps.

Hmm I was playing STALKER and a blue screen popped up saying "Hardware Malfunction call your hardware vendor"

Now I have to decide if that means there's legitmately a problem or if STALKER (a game that is buggier then all he11) is messing up.

    Any thoughts?

ok I had this same problem, where my computer would either blue screen or freeze when doing things graphic intensive (and it was related to heat, if I did things to lower heat the freeze would be set off to as long as 2hrs, or even more), so I tried to fix it and I bricked my m6862. So I took it to a guy in my parents' workplace... and he worked on it for 2 weeks before saying it was from internal, basically unfixable, damage, then worked on it for another week and told me just to scrap it and use its RAM and hardware,

though he still got it to work like before where it freezes in an hour or 2, which is just fine for me.

What are the newest drivers for the HD 2600 mobility again? the ATI site is retarded...

There's a reason why these things were in clearance... You get what you payed for unfortunately

What confuses me is why would you use a third party to assemble/disassemble your laptop if it is mostly likely still under 1y warranty which you might have just voided......

I ran some tests and they came up fine. Played STALKEr for a few more hours and didn't get it so I may be in the clear. If not it's under warranty :)

well I got it from buy.com, and it didn't come with a warranty, atleast not one I am aware of, it was refurbished too, and those manufacturer refurb warranties dont last more than 3 months to all of my knowledge.

Ok before I bricked my laptop, I uninstalled my graphics drivers to get new ones, and it would stay on for a few minutes and freeze, and by sticking a fan underneath it and opening the bottom, you could keep it alive for like 30 minutes.

So after it got "fixed" I'm still in the same situation, where do I get the drivers so it will stop freezing constantly? I'm afraid that it will freeze during the installation as well...

Drivers are basically the "program" that takes the commands from the operating system and tells them to the hardware and vice versa. Upgrading the drivers helps take better advantage of the card.

ATI's support for driver is terrible (from what I can see) and Laptop drivers are a crap shoot in general, mix them together and you get about 1 new driver....whenever the heck they feel like.

What most people do is mod the drivers. I'm pretty sure it's been discussed 1000x's in this thread.

    All

I ordered the bluetooth (dell 370) card that was described earlier in the thread. However, I can't seem to find the drivers that were mentioned to use under 64bit vista.

The sad part is I don't seem to see the card in the Vista 64bit control panel.

Did I miss anything obvious, or is the card a dud?

Never mind... I think that this is it. http://support.dell.com/support/dow...=5&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=5&fileid=286236

I have a question regarding the wireless in these. I've looked up specs and such and have found on intel's site that it can run either 2.4 or 5 ghz spectrums, but It's not finding my 5 ghz network. I know I set that up right with the new router, my fiance is running the 5 ghz connection. This just doesn't pick it up as a listing. I've tried using the newest drivers from intel, but still getting nothing.

U should re apply the thermal paste with some ICD7
Keep your laptop levitated at least an 1"
Actually something interesting about this laptop when your watching a video/movie the laptop overclocks itself to a core clock of 600 and a memory clock of 700 instead of the default 500 core and 600 memory..................

I've since tried several other things that I was told to try on linksys forums and still cannot access the 5ghz network. I've tried using each channel available for the 5ghz side. One thing I can't find is how to change the channel on the network card itself.

If you remove the cover on the bottom that exposes the heatsink, you remove the heatsink and you'll see where the thermal paste goes (namely on the processor, gpu and there are probably thermal boots on the ram chips for the gpu).

If you've not done it before now, this may be a good time to at least figure out how to take the covers off the bottom and do a good thorough cleaning. Dust build up is also a cause of overheating issues.

Also, do a search on the forums for a step by step on undervolting. The results vary greatly, but I was able to drop around 20 degrees celsius under full load by undervolting using a really good write up on these forums.

I do use a cooling pad on mine, just a cheapie. All I've found is that it reduces the bottom surface temps a bit. In turn, since heat is being pulled off the bottom, I'd imagine that it helps some with the internal cooling, but I personally won't fork out much for this method of cooling. I watch my temps and when they start looking high, I do a good cleaning. I do want to put better thermal paste in this, but until I can afford an updated processor, I'm holding out on that. If you do go that route, either use a non conductive thermal paste or have an extremely sure hand, cause if you drop some on the board, you could cause damage.

Does anyone know where to get some drivers for Windows 7? I'm currently on Vista 64bit. But from the day I've purchased my laptop till now (9 months) I've noticed I've gone from 90fps to about 20-30ish fps in WoW.. don't know why. I keep it cool by taking the ram cover off and setting it on a cooling pad but it's still down in fps. Dumped the OS a couple of times as well. If anyone knows where/how to get windows 7 drivers that'd be great, I'm looking for a change.

make sure when you are gaming your power options are on high performance, also go into the advanced options and check the graphics card, processor, and hard drive options make sure they are at max performance. you should also check to make sure cooling is on active cooling just in case.

use the mobility windows 7 gpu drivers on ati's site, they work very well. then check your CCC power options.

you might also wanna monitor your temperatures, make sure it isnt over heating.

lastly, while you are gaming make sure there isnt anything serious running in the background, such as a antivirus scan, it can cause a serious performance hit.

Does anyone know where I can get a bottom case bay cover ( the cover that goes over the ram and fan)? I took mine off and misplaced it, so now i'm looking to buy another one. Ebay doesn't have any. Where should i get one at?

EDIT: hey on a side note, I plan to just get rid of the bottom cover of the fan, it seems to be so obstructive, is this smart? I don't think there's a way to get a new bottom cover. And anyone know an excellent cooling pad for this laptop? ty ahead of time

    -------------------------------------
Hey I heard people talking about this previously, and I myself brought it up as how my laptop was unusable during graphics demanding apps (such as CoD4).

Well I found a fix. My laptop was freezing due to heat a few hours into older games and a few minutes (as in like 2) into new ones, like CoD4. It didn't have the problem previously, but now that it did, I decided to mod tool the drivers. I uninstalled the older ones and my computer started FREEZING every 10 minutes, so the freezing was clearly graphics card related. So if you plan to do this, make sure you already downloaded modtool and the latest ATI driver.

Well to give the computer long enough life to install the new drivers, I removed the bottom cover of the fan, raised the laptop with supports on either side (anything will do), and stuck a table fan to high at the back end of the laptop. To maximize airflow, keep in mind that if the laptop screen itself can direct the direction of the airflow, so if you tilt it back at the correct angel, most of the fans air will go under the laptop. This raised my 10-5 minutes to 20-30 minutes, which allowed me to install the drivers, and my laptop is FINE now.

To get modtool (free) go here:
    http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php
    forums for it:
    http://www.driverheaven.net/driverheaven-tools-discussion/

And follow the instructions, get the latest ATI desktop drivers (9.7 as of writing this), hd2600 runs up to dx10 drivers to my knowledge. Someone told me to JUST download the drivers, and not Catalyst control center, and mod JUST the drivers; I did that and it worked, and I don't know if you download the entire ATI CCC+drivers package and modtool it, it will work, so be careful (may want to check on the forums if you REALLY want Catalyst control center).

another good way to cut down the heat is undervolting the cpu, it is really close to the gpu and chipset so they share alot of heat.

I tried undervolting my cpu one time, but i wasn't sure if i did it right.

this laptop is dual core, but in the taskbar where the undervolt program was the button said something about only 1cpu being active. IDK if i did it wrong or if it was supposed to be like that, or only one cpu was being used at the time

maybe this is in the wrong thread, but i seem to have a problem with my m-6862

when getting into games like team fortress 2 everything is GREAT and smooth 40+ fps
but after awhile (about 2 min in) the game gets REALLY sluggish and runs at like 10fps... then when i exit out and restart completely it runs fine, so it seems i have to keep restarting the game to have it playable.. what could be the cause of this?

Is it safe if I keep the back panel to my fan/cpu off? It seems to block so much air intake from my cooler.

What is the best design of a cooler for this laptop, where the cooler is in the back, raising the laptop, or where its just a pad on the bottom, blowing air up?

EDIT: to banker, try to modtool the latest ati drivers (google modtool). Oh and to above poster how much did you undervolt, did you just keep going down till your computer blue screened?

its fairly safe, but make sure you keep it dust free and make sure the hardware isnt touching anything

for a cooler i use a generic belkin cooler because all the vents seem to be in the center strip. this laptop seems like it would work pretty well with any cooler, except even with a cooler it is always hot :/

i undervolted, then i used orthos to check it. after i got to the point where it bluescreened almost immediatly i went up by one option and ran orthos for an hour followed by 3dmark06 to make sure it was stable.

I undervolted mine to 1.0000v and after testing stability with orthos for an hour, I declared it stabled. Several hours later I notice that I was getting freezes while playing videos from gametrailers.com, so I raised the voltage to 1.0125v and it seems stable now.
I also set the GPU to "Maximize Battery Life" mode so it will run at 300MHz Core and 400MHz RAM all the time, although the temps don't seem any lower.

Well, after having this laptop for close to a year, I finally got that "freeze when you unplug the AC adapter" issue people many pages ago mentioned. Haven't made any changes other than install Windows 7. Running the latest BIOS, drivers (although they're aren't any Windows 7 drivers on Gateway's site for the M-6862 yet), etc.

Anyone ever figure out the root cause for this issue? Putting the laptop to sleep before unplugging/plugging the AC works fine, but that's still annoying.

2 of the wires broke off on my fan on the inside. the black and red one. I have an old fan in a dell laptop that might fit inside this laptop, would i be able to just throw that one in there and hook it up?

I'd try to solder the wires back onto the solder points on this fan but the space is so tiny that it's really hard.

any advice on what to do? a replacement fan cost $80 online, i'd rather not spend that much.

Hello everyone. I'm still using my trusty M-6862 with XP on it, and it still gives me a "task not responding, sigmatel IDT Systray" and I have to end task every time I hit shut down.

The real reason I came back to this thread though is I need information about the 56k modem in this notebook. When I installed XP, I didn't put any drivers in for the modem. Does anyone know what modem is in here and where I can find the driver? I'm trying to set up a PC to Dreamcast connection so I can play PSO online again!

Most of those with heat problems over time probably have a bunch of dust buildup on the heatsink and the fan. I noticed mine creeping up to around 50c at idle and decided to take off the fan and give the fins a good dusting as well as the heatsink. There was a pretty big buildup in the airway.

I just used some compressed air and a duster brush and cleaned it up. Temps are back down to 32c at idle now. You don't have to take off the heaksink, just the fan. 4 smalls screws around the fan and it's out. I also undervolt, so YMMV.

    Hi dihnekis,

I am sure you have seen the first 2 URLs ... but in any case here they are ... on the Driver Support Site if you plug in your laptop's S/N it will take you directly to the Drivers ...

The 3rd link I think it will be your Savior ...

Thanks, the third one was what I needed kind of (although I had installed some other drivers too that seemed to work).

Now it turns out I actually need drivers for this modem to run in windows 98. I am trying to set up a PC- Dreamcast server, and it works only in 98... so I've gotta find some way to get this modem running in 98. Will generic conexant v.92 drivers work?

Does this notebook have a slot for an extra hard drive?

I want to install a dual boot setup with windows 98 on it. Any idea if this notebook will run windows 98?

    Hey all,

Checking back in with another issue. Seems to be the norm for this laptop. Over time the temps have slowly creeped up. I have fully cleaned it, so that's not the issue. I have it undervolted and sitting on a cooling pad. Now when I log into EQ2 or any more intensive game, the temps climb to around 80 celsius and starts warning me of overheating. The only thing I've found that brings those temps down is taking the cover off the bottom, but it's not an option to do that regularly. The lining inside the cover shows obvious marks of being hot. I remember somewhere in this forum someone had bought a cover for it that was better ventilated. Does anyone have a link to getting one? Any other options found? As it is, the "filter" in the vents have apparently begun to melt together and therefore you can blow on one side and feel nothing on the other side.
