Interesting didn't know that before. Will cpu-z be fooled too? That's one of my primary utilities.

A lot of people that bought a slightly lower end Gateway reported that instead of the T5750 they got the T7500. But they only checked via software, device manager, and bios. Is the bios check reliable? I always thought that was the most reliable way other than physically checking the model number on the processor.

So you used those drivers and they worked...huh I guess I'll them a try later.
I thought those drivers were for the desktop but apparently they're not.

Did you download yours from that link or another place?

    EDIT-
Duh, I went over to gateways website, put in my serial number and am currently downloading the new driver. :p

How many mbps is everyone getting on the built in Wi-Fi when at least 30 to 40 feet away from your wireless router? Is it usually 54.0 mbps? Any connection drops? I'm just wondering if I should use my Zonet USB adapter that consistently gets 54.0 mbps with no connection drops on this laptop.

It should already be on your D partition.

Go to Start Menu -> Gateway Recovery Center. Find it in there.

Otherwise, get it off gateway's website.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=257866

    Follow the instructions there.

EDIT: It just hit me that M-6862 comes with 64 bit default, so all your drivers from GRC will be for 64 bit. But the thing is, im pretty sure synaptics drivers are for both 32 and 64 bit so it should work regardless.

Or you could try the driver http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=21246&uid=20966061 (at your own risk)
It doesnt specify its for the M-6862 but its the same driver version as the one listed under 64 bit for M-6862.

Can someone please comment on the quality of the the built in Wi-Fi connection when at least 30 to 40 feet from your router ? Is it a constant 54 mbps? Have you had any connection drops?

The computer uses the latest Intel Wireless N technology to give you as good a connection to your router as a laptop can get. I'm on the second floor of my house including 2 walls, and probably at the 45ft range of my router. I still maintain a constant connection on large downloads, and have never lost one yet. :)

After reinstalling with the Mobility Modder I didn't see that large of a difference, but it is expected because I already overclock my GPU to (620/715) when gaming. lol

    Hi Vince,

If you are still having trouble with your Touchpad ... try the Vista 32-bit drivers from Synaptics ... evidently other folks report using them on other Forums and they work ...

    http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm

Post back if it worked A-OK!

    Thanks,

    Hi folks,

ALERT: Do Not Waste your money on this "Antec Notebook Cooler" for using with your Gateway M-6862 laptop.

    Antec Notebook Cooler
    http://www.buy.com/prod/antec-notebook-cooler-usb-power-2-x-70mm-dbb-fan-w-aluminum-surface-oem/q/loc/101/209211927.html

The darn cooler works like a Heater on this laptop. My HWMonitor Temps for CPU started to jump from 29C to 36C for no reason ... the minute I removed the cooler ... Temps back down again.

I am assuming the reason for this is because M-6862 Vents under the laptop does not line up correctly with the Fans on Antec ... and or is blowing air into the vents and acting more as a detrrent than a HELP!

Just wanted to warn you guys so you won't waste $20 to $40 on this Particular Laptop Cooler.

    G! :)

The antec cooler draws air away from the bottom of your laptop, which is why it sucks.

I use AMD GPU Clock Tool for overclocking:

    http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/536/AMD_GPU_Clock_Tool_v0.7.html

I use Rightmark's CPU Utility for undervolting:

    http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/RightMark-CPU-Clock-Utility.shtml

The safe zone I found for undervolting is the max multiplier set to 1.000v

The safe zone I found for overclocking is the point that I can stomach. I put mine at 620 engine and 720 memory. ;)

EDIT: Though I would not advise doing this w/o a cooler, some people have gotten 640 engine and 775 memory. :D

    Hi KP,

When you are bored :D you might want to consider putting a Short Guide for Undervolting & OverClocking ... for example when OC ... what increment did you push it up each time.

    Thanks,

    Hi folks,

I am just curious to see if I removed too much of "Bloatware" software that came stocked on Gateway M-6862 ... or may be I missed something else! Here is what I have removed:

    Norton 360
    Napster
    eBay
    NetZero
    Norton Products Promo
    Microsoft Office Suite 2007
    Microsoft Power Point Reader
    Microsoft Money Essentials
    Microsoft Works Launcher
    Windows mail
    Windows Meeting Space

I used the system disc, and just re-installed x64 Vista because the system disc only loads the operating system. I then went to the gateway website, and download all of the drivers so my computer has no bloatware at all. :D

However from what I saw before I wiped, you have all of the bloatware out except the Gateway Games I think. ;)

    Hi KP,

Thanks! I actually like few oftheir Trial Games ... so I think I will keep those ... since they don't have "annoying" pop-up Reminders.

As far as Clean install from System Disc

Q1: Did you happen make the Recovery Discs before doing this?

Q2: Downloading the Vista 64 Drivers from Gateway ... did you do it Manually or did you for the Online Check by Gateway and Downloading?

Q3: Did you by any chance play around with the Vista 32?

EDIT: Hi KP, I just was reading back the posts under Vista 32 in this Thread and saw your Post #93 ... that you did try Vista 32 but you were having difficulty with the Drivers! Did you ever get all the drivers working!?!?

    Thanks,

    G! :)

    Vince,

I am not so sure if you want to BLOW $20 on this Vantec Lapcool cooler ... I am thinking it will be a Waste of your money.

But since you are getting it from Fry's ... go ahead and try it ... and take it back if no good. What I would do ... I place the HWMonitor 1.11 (32 bit) on my Desktop ... then when I turn-on my laptop for the 1st time ... you know after has been sitting there for an hour and cool down ... then activate your HWM as soon as you turn on your laptop ... and don't run anything else and see your Temps at 1st .... then after 5 or 10 minutes Turn on the Lapcool and see if it lowers your Temp at all ... then try it with a Game and see if it does anything ... I have a suspicion that the darn thing won't do anything ... matter of fact might worsen your Temps.

    Please Post back your Findings.

    G! :)

    Hi Foladar,

I am still Researching it ... I am not a Gamer so I can most likely get away without a Cooler ... BUT, my curiosity is killing me ... I will try to find what would most likely be a Good/BEST Match for M-6862 laptop.

hey gonwk thanks for the advice, why do you think its a bad cooler? just wondering i probably won't buy it theres lots of other coolers i saw for 20 bucks,

    now a little venting,
I WISH THERE WERE MORE THREADS FOR THE 6862! there are so many for the 7811 but its problems so i guess the least thread for the 6862 means us 6862 users aren't having so much problems so that's a good thing, but theres still so many questions and stuff i still wanna know lol, plus a lot of people on this thread didn't have one til it went on sale, i thought this laptop was fairly new but then learn that it was a soon to be discontinue product, that why it was on clearance at BB. and so far we only have one throughly review that is great but we should have more, i don't have a camera and knowledge to do one =[ i don't OC or UV my laptop.

    Hey!

A1: Yeah I made recovery discs, I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but Gateway released the laptop with a partition to use for recovering the factory settings and programs.

A2: I did it manually, and in some cases went to the manufacturer's website to find the latest drivers.

A3: I used Vista 32b, but I just couldn't see any benefit of using it. It didn't increase fps on games, and the computer actually slowed down because it couldn't use the full 4GB of mem. So I decided to wipe it and put Windows XP 32bit instead because it at least added some fps and improved benchmarks.

I got this lappy last weekend, still in the box while I wait for my Vaio return to go through.

my buddy got one as well, and I like what I see! a couple of things, though....no bluetooth (solved by micro usb or add-in card), and no esata. so, is there a good way to add-in esata though the open pci slot?

    Hello,

Cooling was on my mind also the first couple of days I had this. The fan and heat caused a bit of concern. Under volting solved that and I will forever undervolt any computer in the future that I can after these results...

Just curious though, why do you not want to try undervolting this obviously overvolted CPU...?

I run .9875 on the 12X and the default on 6X...Only 2 speeds, all the others unchecked. I have idle and fast....

Stress test before undervoltage was a whopping mid 80's....After it was mid to upper 60's. As I type this and look down I see at this moment I am idling at 28 degrees....

Before the fan ran and it was hot, now I barely notice the heat...

Both HWmonitor and the RMclock core temp. Use 2 sources to verify core temps..

I placed HWmonitor in the start up folder and will keep it there for a few weeks...

Max core temp since this morning (12 hours) reads 57 and 59 core 1 and 2...ACPI max was 65...GPU max 58, and drive was 41....

    Hi mstng,

Are these Temps reflecting your "Regular" use of the laptop ... you know laptop is on and you are doing Internet (multiple pages open) and listening to music on CD and have few other junk running (Excel, Word, Power Point) ...

    G! :)

Yeah, I would say so.....If I were to use the stress program or some game I would expect the core temps to max out at mid to upper 60's instead of upper 50's as they have

I usually have a couple different pages opened, along with a different browser. I download quite a bit so that's running frequently and I did watch a few videos today and half of a movie...

    Doesn't undervolting choke your performance?
I'm curious cause I was a few games (the most graphically intensive being HL2) for a few hours and this thing heated up like crazy. HWMonitor's temps showed me it was nothing "in the redzone". I think the GPU maxed out at like 75C, but the laptop itself was on fire.

I got the back propped up for air flow, but still anything to cool this thing off more is worth a try. Was thinking about getting a small fan to improve the flow of air, but undervolting intrigues me.
