I just picked up a 7805-u/1440x900 yesterday also. Was hoping for the 1900x1200 but after several hours last night I don't think I would like the small icons/fonts. And like that the lower native res means better long-term game performance. Just my .02cents

Not sure about your *ting sound I've not noticed that. But have seen an article about the fan constantly spinning up and down. I think I noticed this last night, it's a distinctive/odd noise, maybe that's what you're noticing.

I guess the early models game with a Vista Disk, the newer models don't
Look in the Gateway programs folder for the backup/restore app. This makes backup DVDs. 2 for OS and 1 for apps/Drivers.
You need to make these in case your drive crashes.
There is a hidden restore partition that the app copies to the DVDs. That's where the extra space (288 instead of 320) is going.
Once you've burned backups you could* wipe that partition out.

You could also pickup a Vista64 Premium OEM disk from newegg $99. But with Windows 7 Super Duper Deluxe coming out this year*? I don't think I want to burn the $99.

Download Windows Decrapifier and run that, I also ran ccleaner and Malwarebytes.

Malwarebytes actually found some Trojan.BHO add crap on a full scan.

Simply put the hard drive manufacturers define 1gb as 1,000,000 bytes whereas Windows define 1gb as 1,073,741,824 bytes and if you do the math, it comes out to 298gb of which 10gb is taken by a hidden recovery partition. When everything is said and done, you are left with 288gb.

That's going to be hard, and why would you want to? If you need 64-bit x86, go with Vista...

I doubt you'll find many on XP x64, while I like XP x86, x64 was REALLY finicky about everything. There's a drivers thread around here somewhere that I think did include even x64 XP drivers though. The 7811FX uses all the same parts other than the video card (which doesn't really matter since its still the same family), look at those threads about XP and drivers for your answers. There are several of us running x86 XP without too many major issues (web cam mic doesn't work and the quickplay buttons dont work very well)

The laptop comes with a 320GB hard disk unless some one changed the disk in the one you bought, and out of the box I think mine had 260ish GB free. Also they don't come with a restore disk, you have to use the gateway system utilities thing to make restore disks.

No CD or DVD with my 7805. Go to Gateway--->Gateway Recovery Management to make your recovery DVD (2)windows vista and CD (2) for drivers and apps.

I've had so many problems with this laptop, I'm about to go nuts. After I drop a load of cash on it, I don't know if it's Vista half the time or the laptop hardware. One thing I'm pretty convinced about is my graphic intensive games will completely freeze after awhile of playing. Freeze and make loud audio static noises, which is obvious sign of faulty video card. But that's besides the point, reason I'm posting is because I'm attempting to update my drivers on this laptop, and Gateway DOES NOT have this model listed under the list of notebooks to download drivers for. There are different model of FX laptops, but the P-7805u is not listed. On top of that, where it gives you an option to enter your 22 digit serial code to find out where exactly you should go, once clicked it tells you this service hasn't been implemented yet. It's been like that for months now. THEN, you try and download the driver auto detect tool they have linked there, and it's not compatible with the operating system the laptop comes with (Vista x64) So yeah, that's just the tip of the ice berg. I'm hoping by actually finding these drivers I can fix a bunch of problems I've been having with it lately. This is one of those, it works great when it works type deals. But Vista is absolute trash, I spent an entire weekend just getting it decently operational and I am a technical analyst. I feel sorry for the standard home users. Anyway, anyone know if there is a location where you can download the drivers for this thing?

Yes, Gateway Techs state that they still don't have the site fixed for 22 digit Serials.

The Tech I talked to confirmed that the P-7800 series drivers, h e r e are the correct ones for the 7805u.

    Rydell,

Try HERE or HERE for your selection of mobile GFX drivers.

There are several topics on the forum explainig optimisation of these machines and you should take the time to read some of them to familiarize yourself with various issues and solutions.

I don't mean to be rude, but for a technical analyst you kind of whine a lot. please do not take offense

Anyway, I hope the links I gave you will help sove your issues. I actually got a BSOD today for the first time and I wasn't even doing anything taxing. It was nvidia driver that caused it so I will change the drivers as well.

It's not "whining" if it's for legit reasons, and venting as we can call it has nothing to do with me being a technical analyst. That should only credit these issues as being legitimate problems with the system. I'm already a member of several technology forums and at this point don't have the patience to search every single one of them, I just happened across this board by searching my laptops model number in Google and decided to make a post in what I thought might be a common area of knowledge for these laptops. Given, this is my first post, I hope I won't have to explain myself again on these boards. Now that being said- no offense taken. Thank you for the links, I thought those drivers might be compatible with these models. Wish me luck.

I have a quick question. I recently bought mine, but when I go to device manager to have it chekc for updates it says my graphics card is up to date. But it seems on here everyone is talking about new drivers. Are there new ones for the 9800m GTS? And also I have a great internet connection to play WoW but it runs at a low 38 fps. This thing should be able to max out and crank out the fps's shouldn't it? I play source engine games at close to 200 fps this makes no sense.

    @Rydell

    Goodluck.
I think what Daniel was trying to say was you didn't sound like the average first timer on these forums. Since most of them start off with "Hey guys, hope you can help me since I can't figure out whats wrong..(States problem here)"
    But I understand your feelings.
First, change your drivers, I'm using Dox's (The first link Daniel gave) and they run fine, but, they're for GAMING. If your not a gamer, nVidias are more balanced for other uses in my opinion.
If you have any other problems, Don't be afraid to ask.
Also welcome to the forum and if you'd like, read through some threads in this forum to find out many things about your system and how it ticks :)

Go to the links Daniel posted above. To install the drivers.
    1) Download the .exe on the pages above.
    2) Uninstall your current drivers through "Uninstall a program" on your control panel.
(To uninstall, locate "nVidia Drivers" in your "Uninstall a program" list, ONLY check off "nVidia DISPLAY drivers", and you should have it from there)
    3) "OPTIONAL" Download a program called Driversweeper (Google it) and run it, only cleaning the display drivers.
Note: If your're going to use driver sweeper, Don't restart when your asked to after uninstalling drivers, but restart after using driversweeper., if your not going to use driversweeper, Restart after the uninstall.
    4) After all thats done, go to the .EXE you downloaded in step one and run it, install them drivers than reboot.
    5) Done.

What kind of frame rates should I be looking at maxed out on the 1440x900 monitor. I am under the impression that this laptop would chew up WoW like nothing.

I run Everquest 2 on very high settings with no problem with my P-7805u, in fact my son runs it same settings with his P-6860fx too. Wow is less cpu and gpu intensive than Everquest 2, so there should be no problems.

Thats, what I am wondering, my latency is low, and i am still only getting around 38 fps. It should be higher. I play source engine based games(i.e. CS.Source, Day of Defeat Source, Half Life 2) online and get near 200 fps. On WoW it seems soemthing is wrong. Anyone else experience this?

Thats how WoW runs on these. Been reported in many different threads. Most are putting the settings on medium and getting 60-70FPS.
I personally haven't tried running it because I don't play it, but thats what people have reported.

Yikes, no no no no no! There's on reason to use 3rd party hacks for drivers on Nvidia hardware. Hasn't been for years. And now it's better still-just download the laptop drivers from Nvidia's site. They've been working beautifully for me on my lowly 9650GT (and even if those weren't available you could just force the desktop drivers to install).

On the WoW demo I was getting way better frame rates than what you guys are. One person suggested the USB mouse as an issue. I can say I run a microsoft mouse and do use the hack needed to disable the touch pad with a usb mouse plugged in.

The demo consistently was over 100 fps and never saw below 80 fps. I am way over my 10 day trial so I can't get back in but what you guys are getting is way too low.............

Does anyone know which one is the newer version? Maybe version doesn't matter... maybe it is just hit or miss if you get one that humms more or not?

I need to return one back to gateway, so I don't know which one to keep. If they are practically the same, then I'll keep the one that is smaller and hisses less.

The one with ridges is the one that came with my 7805 . It made a humming noise that I could hear about 3-5 inches away, but never caused problems... but maybe in the future.

I called tech support, and they sent me the smooth one. Its about the same width and thickness, but shorter. Also, the plug for the computer is fatter (i think its better). It makes no hissing noise (only standard electrical noise putting my ear on the plastic).

I did order a Kensington 120W refurb off ebay for $25 for travel, and Targus 180W new from bargainstation.com for $50 shipped for gaming.

Sorry if this has been discussed many times, but I didn't really get a clear answer on this. Thanks.

I use Beyond TV to watch TV and record shows to Laptop. This all worked fine on my last machine but for some reason, now when I start a live show or recorded show, it starts up and you can see the timer at the bottom start at different intervals. IE; the show will pop up the timer reads 8 seconds then jumps to 15 seconds then back to 5 11 seconds. It seems to do this in random intervals and stops after about 20 seconds. At the same time this is happening the audio is gibberish. I have installed the latest drivers and nothing. The Beyond TV support asked me to see if the recorded shows do the same thing in other programs.. They do, media player and media center both do the same thing..Also, sometimes the recorded shows audio is 10 to 20 seconds out of sync from the video. Anyone have any idea.. Thanks..

Aloha all...Been lurkin for a while and finally went out and bought one. Thanks for all the great info. I really do like it. Probably would have like the higher res screen more however I am still very pleased.

My BB on all laptops have cleaned out some of the crap from the system, installed their own security software, and all for only another $150. If you don't want the Security - They leave it installed and wont give you the box - while still charging you $50.....BB what a joke!

Just picked up my 7805u tonight. GOt it because I slipped on the ice the other day and cracked my beloved hp9500... 2.5 years and no issues... sigh.

Anyway,.. I only have the 1440x900.. and I'm happy. I eventually may just pick up the higher res lcd panel... they had one on display but it was not the LG and did not look too good... some light leakage and all even in the bright room.

What I did is got on my hp,.. uninstalled as many drivers as I could through device manager while burning the apps/drivers DVD on the fx. I then just transferred the 2 320GB drives into the Gateway and updated all the drivers. I have Vista Ultimate 64 with about 20 large programs installed.. and didn't want to run all the setups again... so until I get my dual 500GB drives,.. this is fine... I'll reinstall everything then.

Nice system. Great Keyboard... nice fairly solid feel to it.

Looking forward to doing some of the mods written here.

    Take care guys!

    Bill

PS... what do I install in order to be able to again use the lit-up media keys?...

    Hi everyone,
I bought this laptop 1 month and a half ago, but I'm trying its capabilities only now. And I've got some issues with it...
In the beginning, I played only WoW, with highest graphics, in the native 1440 resolution. Sometimes it crashed after a few hours of playing. But that was ok since it was unusual.
I currently tried playing Crysis, with high details, and first of all... that's amazing how graphics look sooooo nice!!! But after 30 minutes of playing, it crashes. It does the same thing with Tom Clancy's HAWX. So I guess it is some overheating issue, since the delay before it crashes depends on the graphic level of the game.
The crash is simply a "freeze" of the screen, involving that I must reboot the laptop...

Does somebody experience any issue like that? I think I should return it to Best Buy, hoping they will give another one to me very soon... Can't live without my laptop, especially when games are so nice!

Thanks! I should have been more specific... the lights are up and running.. just doesn't do anything. Only thing that works is volume. When I had the original drive with vista 64 home... if I hit the DVD buton,.. would pop open the dvd player. Not so much anymore with that or the music button.

Actually, the P7805u specifications show it with a 1440 x 900 screen (WSXGA).

Some of the early ones shipped with 1920 x 1200 WUXGA acreens.

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9172511&type=product&id=1218043606827

best buy says its WXGA which is 1366x768?
and best buy customer reviews many say the laptop goes into blue screen or freezes or has driver issues when playing games, and games cant play for more than 15 minutes in some cases.
    whats the deal with that?

The screens are 1440 x 900, some of the first where 1920x1200. For the blue screen reviews, There have been next to none reports of that happening on this site, it is probably user error or one bad laptop.

Actually WXGA is 1280x800 in most cases.
But the FX is actually WSXGA which is 1440x900.

Most of the BB customer reviews are positive and gamers are not having any problem with the 7805u.

Most gamers are aware that problems such as "blue screens" or freezes may be game related and patches to the game program resolves them.

It is unfortunate, but the BB customer review process does not allow for a reviewer to easily (if at all) correct a review and explain what ultimately resolved the issue.

I'm with flynnaz - a board such as this would be a better place to discuss and resolve such an issue rather than a complaint on a review site.

    Just my 2 cents.
