gpu underclocks by itself, cpu uv use rmclock and there is a cooling guide somewhere around. as to o/c gpu ntune 6.03 is what you should use

prop the back of your notebook one inch (dont block air intakes ) and be happy.

What works for one may not work for others but just try one and if it locks up with regular use bump the v up until it works. Orthos or OCCT is not difficult. Just run it for awhile while you are doing your regular surfing or working on something non critical.

I find the gpu stable so don't have need to bother further. I tend to stick with a video driver unless problems arise.

Change all the vid's to lowest possible. bottom is 9 and top I can't remember. I'm not on it now. Higher clocks usually need a little more vid.

ok people couple of questions about the lappy. and concerns.
bought the 7811 2 days ago the 2888 serial. first thing :
light leakage is bad. couple of inches from top and bottom not too bad, BUT a big patch on upper left side and a band of light centimeter wide running from top to bottom. very visible on pitch black screen and if the room is reasonably dark. not too visible viewed straight on but as i shift to the left, it becomes more and more visible. any other color. not visible at all. doesn't bother me much in fact i like the overall screen quality better then my current lappie. but is this a sign of worse things to come. should i exchange now.

everything else is pretty much what a lot of people have said. haven't had time to play around much because of time and/or vista 64 bothering the hell out of me. but firing up cod4 now to check temps.

Yes. I may be able to go lower. I can't remember if testing did not allow lower??? Temps are cool so I have not cared.
Now that you mention it I am going to try lowering them. I went through the whole testing thing on the original OS but did fresh Vista Ultimate and just threw RM on and stuck in some settings.

OK so far down to here and 30 min of OCCT while surfing. May try lower but good enough for now.

Temps improved. Should have done it before.

The right most column, the max temps was while running OCCT. But at the lower voltages it probably did not reach 53/54 max. I did not reset the temp max.

I find Orthos a little buggy and prefer OCCT. Sometimes Orthos is OK, just depends.

    http://www.ocbase.com/perestroika_en/index.php?Download
Use the zip file for no install. The only irritating thing is it monitors for the first minute, so I just let it run for awhile, then I drop vid a notch and keep OCCT running, etc.

None of these are magic. I have had systems pass all the benchmarks and stress tests and fail on the first game. This is rare but possible. But it is an easy way to test without going through all the time to load and run games, etc. I have also had Orthos error and nothing else was a problem. This again is not common but can happen. So my point is you have to take the whole picture and not put all your eggs in one basket.

I doubt it is reality but maybe the fan triggers are different. I'm on 08 and see no difference from original. I have not read of a problem with anyone's BIOS flash on this lappy so you could try. I always hold my breath on a BIOS flash ... they are not always happy.

oh hi jomz... i had mine shipped here by a contact. pretty expensive though. you get charged with tax both locally and when it comes here. so you can't really buy one for the price that gateway is offering it because a lot of things come at risk and unless you have someone technical enough to check it out for you before shipping it all the way here, i suggest checking tpc. i posted something there you might consider. :D

120K? that's almost twice its online selling price. it's still worth it though, considering the lappys with class 3 vidcards they sell here... i'll try to think it over. i may spend christmas in the states, so i think i'll look for something there instead. :D thanks for replying. :D

Hey, noob here but thanks to the info in this thread I bought a 7811 (got a 2887), have tweaked it some, and wanted to post my experiences to help others deciding on this laptop while it's still on sale.

First, impressions: the one I got delivered (bought online from BB) was solid, and the screen was far better than what I saw in the store. I assume based on what I read here that I lucked out and got the Samsung LCD; it has much better viewing angles and consistent brightness than the store models. Otherwise everything was fine with the laptop, no complaints.

I used the info in this thread to download/flash to 9C.08 BIOS; the BIOS on the Gateway site did NOT work (showed CRC and other errors, no thanks) but 9C.08 posted here worked perfectly, used the Windows utility - thank you!

I bought two WD Scorpio Black 250GB drives and pulled out the factory HD, installed the two new HDs. As mentioned here, you'll need four laptop HD screws from somewhere, though Gateway nicely included the HD tray for the second HD bay! Installation was straightforward, then into the BIOS to set disk controller to RAID, and bingo, next boot hit Ctrl-I and configured RAID0 array. No troubles so far.

Installed Windows Server 2008 x64; no extra SATA or RAID driver needed. This will primarily be a work laptop for me (software development consultant). Installation went very smoothly, no problems. Installed the 64-bit drivers off the Gateway site. Here's where I hit snags again and again, forcing repeated re-installs of Windows: I finally found the problem, so here's my experience to save anyone else doing this several hours.

First off, remember even when logged in as Administrator on Windows Server 2008, *** right-click on exes and "run as administrator" ***! This caused a number of installs that failed otherwise to succeed.

There are two nvidia video driver packages posted on the Gateway site; use the earlier one. The later one just would not install for me. Admittedly, I'm not a gamer, so if you are you presumably have higher-perf drivers from somewhere else.

The media reader and web cam software install fine. No sweat. The Marvell LAN driver similarly was fine, device manager -> update driver. Intel wireless didn't install, so I went to intel.com and got the latest one there; that worked.

What tanked my Windows install repeatedly? The Intel Matrix storage manager, and the Intel chipset drivers! Installing these, no matter how, in what order, run as administrator or not, instantly started with errors and problems left and right. Bluescreens, slowness, Windows losing the ability to see the RAID0 array at all (!!!), Windows installer crashing, windows coming up blank (like control panel), and on and on. So now I am running happily and fast with a Windows Server 2008 install with the other drivers but NO matrix or chipset drivers. You have been warned! And yes, I tried (in successive Windows reinstalls) both the drivers off the Gateway site as well as the latest ones from Intel. Maybe Intel just isn't there yet with the Centrino2/P45M chipset???

For those doing their research, the WD drives I picked up (from Newegg) do not make a ton of clicking noises; seem to perform just fine; and even after a bunch of installs and defrags, the bottom of the laptop is merely warm, not hot.

Hope this helps, and I have to say for the price this is an incredible laptop. Hope it holds up for a couple of years.

pelazem, welcome to the 7811 adventure. I always hold my breath when installing the "improved" chipset drivers from the manufacturer. Sometimes avoiding them is the better choice. I guess one can always "roll back" if still operational. I have had no problem on the 7811 and Vista64 however. Good heads up on Server 2008.

My display is AU Optronics (eyes crossed) according to Everest. Odd, the lack of consistency in parts on these Gateways. I'm envisioning little Chinese guys running to some parts pile and grabbing what ever during assembly ... "Back up the truck Chin and dump them here."

    Interesting note from Wikipedia:
I had never heard of them?

i had similar experience with the intel chipset drivers when trying to install xp x64 on the p-6831. tried twice, both times rendered the o/s unstable.
just skipped it and all was fine.

Hi, I am buying a 7811 here in a couple days and I want to get a notebook cooler with it. What coolers are you guys running? I was thinking nzxt cryo or zalman NC2000. Any thoughts on which would be better for this machine? Thanks.

There has been considerable discussion on this. I have zalman 1000 and it helps. I think propping it up in back (or sticky feet?) works too.

The Cryo sounds like the most serious of the two and will benefit from a powered hub to blow more aggressively.

always consider the cost of shipping and all those things... a qosmio x300 in the philippines cost 160k pesos that's roughly $4000. basic law of supply and demand bro. anyway it's already a bit off topic. :D

Good move ... I wish I had marked those sticky feet. I can't find them again.

Anyone know the FPS on the Gateway P-7811 FX with 2.26 ghz CPU, 9800 GTS 4GB RAM [ is it ddr2 or ddr3 ?] for games like World Of warcraft, Halo 2, Warcraft 3, Starcraft, Call of Duty 4?

    ALSO

What's the battery life of Gateway P-7811 FX?

Also whats up with the discrete 98000 GTS? I heard you can turn it on and off depending on whether or not u want to save power. How do I do that? Like is it a vista utility or nvidia prog?

World Of warcraft [MAX SETTINGS as in perfect FPS]
Halo 2 [Never tested, but I'm sure it's also max settings]
    Warcraft 3 [MAX SETTINGS]
    Starcraft [Are you serious?]
Call of Duty [Not sure, I think there was a thread somewhere on this forum]

Let me just add a little something:
Crysis Warhead [Everything maxed out @ 1680x1050 except for shader which is at mainstream w/ min FPS of 23-24]
