Well mine was working fine yesterday and now it is fried...I didn't change a thing...but the screen went white...then when I restarted nothing appears on the screen...but I can still hear sounds...the left speaker is very hot though, so I assume it is the gpu.

Nothing wrong with a lil baby bump.. unless it's unexpected and screws up your plans for life :) Hmm..kinda like if the AS5 were to short out the chipset *shrugs*

nars, I realized that the lil blue pad that came with mine is very important. When replacing the CPU I made sure to not even touch it. Made that mistake with a previous 7811, and it was a headache ever after. Fortunately(?) that one had a dead pixel..so I was happy to exchange it. And I haven't found any computer shops that sell replacement pads.. but, I did find this on Ebay. http://stores.ebay.com/Arctic-Cooling-RMA-parts
It seems these would work perfectly. Maybe even better than foil? :)

As you've probably read, Rancid and I were working on those 3 unknown devices (you're right about the descriptions) in XP and pretty much had them nailed down for the 32 bit version. I don't have XP 64bit myself but I'm sure there are some who have gotten it to work on their installs. Good luck...

I'm taking bets. When a RAID solution is found, I'm betting it does not get posted on Jakamo5's raid thread which has now slid to page 5.

I'm also taking odds a NEW THREAD will be posted.

    --Jimmy the Greek--

Hey, my back space key is "sticking" or repeating too long after release. Any settings for this? Dang Vista maybe.
OK, went to keyboard in control panel and turned down the repeat rate. That did it - I'm happy again.

Hi there, new to this forum and soon to be owner of the P 7811 FX.

My brother will buy (better said, already ordered it) it for me and then "bring" it over to where I live. He is not really the computer geek, and nor am I, nonetheless, I would like him to run some "stress tests" on this machine, before it is too late to return it to the states.

    I have noted so far:
    -3dmark 06 (multiple times)
    -Everest
    -HDtune
-idle running for at least 24 hours
    -Playing a DVD-Video

Any other tests you would suggest, in order to be sure, that this baby is at least fine out of the box?
He has no games, so this will sadly not be an option (or do you know one to download, that will put some pressure on the 7811?

    Many thanks in advance,
    Elen

    Have him run this: http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/rthdribl/

No installation and gives the video a whooping.

Furmark is also small and super stressful. (Needs a quick install)

It seems locking up during video stress is the biggest deal. Check the screen while black for defects. Try other colors also. Dead Pixel Buddy is good for a quick color change. http://www.laptopshowcase.co.uk/downloads.php?id=1

Good luck ... hope you get a good one first time.

On HDMI output, I questioned Best Buy on this and they could not get it working at the store.

I was able to see at least 5.1 out to my Denon 3808. So yes there is good quality of sound coming out of this laptop.

Also my Denon is hooked up to a 52” Sony BR4. And the issue I saw when “cloning” the display there were issues with performance to the display stuttering, blocking etc. This was playing AoE, or watching movies.

I saw no issues when the display was “extended”. Now keep in mind there was before I did a clean install. All I did was to remove Norton before I did this testing.

Also I am on my 3rd laptop, the first one had dead stuck pixels, and the second would lock up with extra cooling or not. And now on my third I am seeing good stability but as with the temperature thread I am seeing high temps with a very nice cooler under the laptop.

At this point I will be returning the 3rd laptop and seeing what comes out later this year.

I just lost my wifi for a spell. As in door nail dead, your wifi is not turned on type dead. So I flopped around, reinstalled the driver, rebooted 4 times, pulled the card and reinserted ... nothing. Out of the blue now it decides to work again. I have 2 other cards lying around so no biggie, if the card is the issue. Hope it's not the interface.

So what is the second mini express slot good for?

Use the artifact scanner in ATI tool to give you GPU a real workout. Similar to Prime95(the best CPU stress tester). To the user who complained it made it to hot, that is completely the point, to test for stability. If it gets to hot the cooling system in compromised and should be exchanged or repaired. Combine those two with memtest86 and you will pretty much have your bases covered.

For temp reading I like coretemp and realtemp for CPU and Everest for everything else.

My personal level of system stability is 24 hours fully loaded. If it passes that then it can pass anything.

For replacing the first wifi card.

I had some problems here and there..I always blame it on my wireless router, but it seems the card won't connect. It just errors and times out, and of course vista can't figure anything out when I ask it to resolve the problem. But, I have not had it completely disappear before. Im returning this rig by the way. It has the worst edge bleeding all around, and ghosting is following the bleed. Maybe I should go for that Sager now? ;P

I think every lcd have bleeding at some level. If i ran in to some thing like that to a point it bothers me. I would replace the screen. Very easy to do. Sager system are sure good but they ask way too much $$$ for there stuff.

On my p7811fx i played Devil may cry4, Team fortress 2 (more then 4 hours min), Command and conquer 3, Supreme commander (some lag but that game is crazy with 2000 units on field), Played all prince of Persia, Gears of War, Assassins creed. And no problem with any thing ran very smooth. I played Diff game on diff res but all of them were fairly high res.

i have my notebook sitting on the cooler i build so it dont get too hot.

I got mine today. Dang this thing is huge! Coming from an X61 this is going to take some time to adjust. When using it on my lap half my TV is blocked, and I have a 50" plasma. I am loving the resolution, the amount of workspace is wonderful. I am still sorting through the crap that needs removed but am not going to get to into it until I run it through its paces.

It has a bit of black light bleed but I haven't had a chance to test it out to see how bad it is, just noticed it on Windows start-up. I think the battery may have an issue and is only holding a 98% charge. I'll let it charge overnight and see what happens.

I am off to download some 1080p trailers and she what she looks like.

I think the manual says to let the battery run all the way down to nothing soon after you get it, to reset its memory. And then to do that once a month on a continuing basis.

This laptop is definitely huge, but that does make the screen pretty sweet. I use a good laptop desk, so I can shift it about pretty easily when I want to see the t.v. screen better or change to more comfortable positions.

I let it charge overnight and it was fine. I also took the advice and let it run down this afternoon.

I have reformatted and installed the latest drivers and am loving it. I am downloading Bioshock now and hope to give it a work though in a couple hours.

hey i am planing to buy this notebook in best buy
and i have got a few questions:

    1. When will the price cut end? cos i might get it around 2 weeks later
if it ends sonner than that i might have to work on that

    2. Is the orde online - pick up price going to be the same as i buy it in a store?

    3. Will they let my check the laptop before i pay, eg: run CPU-Z
if not, i have heard that there is a 14 days return time, isthat true?

    4. if yes, what should i check? and what are the major issues of the notebook that i have to be aware of in the 14 days
    eg: overheat?

thx for your time in reading my questions!

    Hi,

P7811 FX documentation says 4GB is max DDR3 ram.

Intel says P45 chipset allows 8GB of DDR2 or 3. Anyone try?

Lotta holidays coming up and a new series of new faster, cooler CPU's coming out from Intel. Probably going to go on sale again on Thanksgiving, if not sooner, and maybe Christmas and/or Halloween.

not in relation to the current discussion about RAM going on but but i believe there is an inherent shortcoming in the current gateway model design not related to nvidia. I'm typing on a friends mt6821 15.4 inch comp. and it gets quite toasty. I've never seen a notebook with these specs get this hot. its c2d 1.6, 2 g ram and integrated Intel graphics. 3.0 vista score for graphics :( . this comp. has nothing nvidia in it. I've been using it for past 3 days for just net surfing and within 10 mins. it starts to blow out really hot air through the left vent and the keyboard and right palm rest get warm. the deign is quite similiar to the 7811 except this is a little smaller.
and no, i'm not blocking the vents or playing crysis on this  . the heat is probably not being directed out properly or something. a bios issue, or vista putting a heavy load on all comps. i dont know how the 7811 can handle the 9800m or a faster processor honestly with this design.

With two gigs of RAM and vista already taking up one of them, the computer is probably reading from and writing to the hard disk a lot. HD's do generate heat. That's why even desktops sometimes have HD cooling systems. For laptops its even worse. Maybe some more RAM would help.

and another note, i installed the xfastest mod, and my 3dmark score dropped about 400 scores...

any other video driver you guys would recommend?

assuming you still have vista 64 bit... you need both the driver and moded inf

otherwise, take a look through here and you'll find an appropriate version for your operating system laptopvideo2go.com's release 177 series drivers

jericcarino, if you are using the video driver in my signature you are using an nVidia driver. That driver simply has the mod inf incorporated into it and you don't need a separate inf. I did not experience a 400 pt drop like you did but I did have a 200 pt drop. The positive thing was it worked well with nTune and overclocked well. So there is more to consider than stock performance. It may not be the best out there but I believe it is better than the original.
