Update: I just called a few other stores near me and asked if they had the 6860 or if they would do a customer fulfilment.. The guy checked and said there were 0 units in the warehouse.. So he wouldnt be able to get it.. So afterwards i called the same store I had yesterday to check up.. The guy there said they would arrive at the store tonight or tomorow night and there were 9 units.. So I asked if they could hold one for me but he said no.. So now I dont know what to do.. 9 units im thinking would run out fast.. I dont wanna travel 60 miles and have them tell me there out of stock.. What y'all think?
-
I was also told by my local Best Buy that they would arrive tonight or Thursday. They let me put a hold on one, but I had to pay for it when I reserved it.
-

Holds are on a store by store and item by item basis. There's no official policy that everyone has. The employee/supervisor/manager gets the final say based mostly on availability.
ORCA orders are available as long as the machine lets the employee put in an order, which means that there must be some left in the warehouse.
Customer Fulfillment is touchier. There must be some in the warehouse, but it may not show even if there are a lot of them in the warehouse. Most computers do not show up in CF. -
Once they show up online in your local store, you can use the pick up at store option to hold them. They will hold for 9 days before canceling the order.
They are in the a couple of NY stores today. -
where in NY are you? i am in syracuse and it doesn't even show the 6831 in stock. i'll call best buy and find out
EDIT: i called and after some guy said he'd check, he put me on hold for about 3 min. then i rang and i said someone was checking for me, hold again.......finally some girl answered and said she would check cause the other guy wasn't going to. anyway same here, getting a shipment tonight. -
What's ORCA stand for btw
-
they have them in Manhattan, midtown and one of the others in the 60s.
-
Just picked up a p-6860 FX. Arrived today in the store. So far so good. Starting the Vista re-install.

intheknow, I will check tomorrow as I was watching the NHL playoffs all night tonight after work...
Holding policy is really set by the store, if an associate says no ask to talk to the MOD.
I've worked there for over 3 years and I never bothered to find out what ORCA stands for other than a family related to dolphins that includes the Killer Whale. -

By the way, most stores are getting shipments this week, my store got eight today.

MOD - Manager on Duty.
-
picked mine up just now, so I guess they're starting to show up at the B&M stores
-
Anyone know what the time period is to get a refund if the prices goes lower? Also, is it different in the B&M vs the website?
-
14 days for notebooks is BB's policy
-
id10t can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe BB will refund the difference if the item you purchase goes on sale within 30 days of your purchase date.
-
they have them in stock at the laurel best buy in maryland. i got the chance to take a look at it. don't know how many they have left though.

Thanks for the clarification. A BB employee in my area told me it was 30 days when I specifically asked about the 6831. He must have been mistaken (or he just doesn't know what he's talking about).
-
The price match time period is directly proportional to how much the managers like you.
-
just got my 6860 a little while ago. only problem is i was burning a backup of the
drivers, but when i went to use it, it was blank. but i still got my recovery partition so im good. I love this thing. now i just have to finish setting it up and make room for it in my room. -
So, to the people who have it, is it really a pound heavier than the 6831?
-
i don't know, but it is heavier than i expected. i don't really care though.

On the ad rotation for Best Buy on April 27th the P-6860FX will be $1,249.99 OR $1,299.99 with a free game ($49 or below value) and Geek Squad gaming optimization.
Just letting you all know. -
Sounds good .... Thanks
-
What exactly do we have to show to get the price difference refunded? Just the receipt? Or do I have to bring my 6860 in?
Thanks -
Just go into the store with your receipt, you don't need the computer or anything. Customer service should be able to do a simple price match and you have your money back.
-
Hmm, that's good!
Cash or store credit?
I just might end up buying GTA IV with that
(Oh, and the deal starts the week of the 27th?) -
Refunds are given in the form of whatever you paid in. (Cash = cash back(above 200$ is a check sent to you), debit = cash (see 200$ rule for cash), check = check sent to you, credit (or debit cards used as credit) = credit back to your card.)
-
nice
I was hoping they would do a sale within 2 weeks of me buying mine, and I'll gladly take 2 days -
Thanks so much Melchior

Last night I picked this up and am pretty happy with it so far. The only complaints I've got would be that the mouse button makes a much louder click than my Dell laptop does and the DVD drive can be pretty loud, almost making a floppy drive kind of sound. These are obviously very minor details that I won't even notice in a day or two.
This is probably a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway. Once I got the laptop home, I created the drivers and apps restore disc and used the Windows disc to install a clean version of Windows. Everything seemed to go fine, although the Windows install locked up on the first attempt. But now, even after installing all the drivers on the restore disc, I've still got an unknown Mass Storage device showing in the device manager. Any idea what that could be? My initial thought was the card reader, but like I said, I installed all the drivers off the disc. Also, since I used the Windows disc to do the restore I can no longer use F8 to use the restore partition. Should I just get rid of that partition altogether and reclaim the space its taking up or is there some other reason to keep it?
What I mean when I say I can't use the F8 restore anymore is when you hit F8 at boot, you're supposed to get the option of repairing Windows, which I don't. I just get the standard choices of Safe Mode, Last Known Good, Normal boot, etc. -
Try gateway's support site, I downloaded all the drivers from there installed all of them. They are kinda diffrent how you install them make sure you read the readme on how to install, its not hard.

Anyone with a P-6860FX interested in trading a Gateway system 64bit for a 32bit. Since I have two P series, I have two system disks and I would like to try out vista 64bit.
-
-
and if i order a pick-up on 27th on the BB website, would the price deduction apply to that too? -
Sorry I know this doesn´t exactly belong here but I was interested in the Best Buy P6860FX. Out of curiousity I went to Gateways website and called gateway to talk to a rep to ask him how purchasing at retail compared to a direct purchase from them. He did his best to discourage me from buying at retail saying the components were older, the support was nothing compared to their support if I purchased direct, Etc., He did his level best to discourage me from buying a Gateway product like the P6860 I was interested in at the retail level. Is this a crock or is there some truth in it? Any comments would be much appreciated. This is my first posting so I hope I´m not out of line in posting this here, Thanks
-
ehh... in fact i'm pretty sure gateway doesn't sell the P6860FX, only BestBuy does.
-
-
awesome, thank you
-
I would be very surprised if the phone operators don't get commission on sales, so that's a very good reason for them to discourage retail sales and encourage phone sales. I wouldn't worry about "old" components too much. The Best Buy website tells you exactly what comes in the laptop. Also, a new model of laptop isn't going to be using dated technology, especially when new models come out as quickly as they do. Finally, Gateway would obviously rather you purchase from them because they make more money that way.
-
hope that helps,

does anyone one know if the price of the p-6831fx will lower is yes and to what price and when
right now it's still at $1 249 in bestbuy.com
thanks -
Cool, I hadn't thought of that. I'll give it a shot when I get home. Thanks! -
