Hey just bought a P-6860fx today at BB with it on sale. I have a small problem in that the fan on the left side of the notebook never shuts off. Is it suppose to do this or is there something wrong with my laptop? I've even got a nc-2000 under it and it still never shuts off.

fans always run to keep the hot air flowing outwards. unless you mean it still runs while your computer is off?

The fan on the left side is for the gpu and while just browsing the internet it cuts on and off intermittently for me while on high performance with no cooler. Then again I know the driver I have installed right now downclocks my card to 200 core 100 memory while not running anything 3D. But while gaming the fan cuts on what seems to be half speed constantly and then sometimes ramps up pretty loud until temps drop again, maybe for 5 mins. If you can check your speeds while the fans are on and check the temps and report back what you find, because I bet the driver you have isn't downclocking very low if at all while just in Windows.

i'm having a hell of a time updating my graphics driver. I;m using vista 64, downloaded several drivers from laptop to go, disabled the digital signature thingy at boot and these things simply will not install. Using vista 32 in my old lappy, i've never had this problem. Help me out.

Ok now I think I'm going mad but my CPU is on the left and GPU is on the right!

This is with the laptop the correct way up looking at the screen.

EDIT: No I'm talking absolute ****e. Ignore me. I've lost the plot tonight.

use cpuid hwmonitor to monitor your temps
trying to figure out if something is wrong by listening to the fan is... well...unscientific ? lol

    have a nice day

My GPU fan always runs after 5 minutes of boot. Everest reports average 50C when idle( hot south US, y'all). Our fans are three wire so they have a tach, shame we have no way to monitor fan speed like my Dell..then maybe this is a good thing ;)

    cheers

looking at the screen. gpu is on the left and the fan runs 100 percent of the time. when hitting like 60c the fan kicks in to high. if it we're to shut off. your chip would burn up inside of 2 to 5 minutes. that's if the thermal protection (gpu down clock or computer shut off) didn't kick in at 85c to 95c

Why is the GPU in use like that even when just surfing the internet, seems strange to me; I would think it would downclock all whenever a game wasn't in use.

this is a performance gpu. and they need to be cooled. and it does down clock as well..all the way down to 200/100/400.

michaelb0202, besides the little problem you have going on, how do you feel about the Zalman 2000 cooler.

it is great for cooling this beast down. My cpu is now idling @ 36c and my gpu now is not constantly running. I'm also using RMClock to lower my voltage on the processor which has help significantly. Also, the gpu fan no longer kicks into it's highest setting using the cooler which is a blessing...that think sounds like a jet at full throttle.
