Didn't the guy with the Turkey sig(the country :p) already say it didn't work, or maybe I thought wrong and someone else just said that you would need better fans, which you can't do anything about the fans.

My bios screen shows the same as everything else.
    CPU Type: Intel (R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.4gh
    CPU Speed: 2.40GHz
    Cache Ram: 3072 KB

I guess i'm just concerned it might be some sort of hardware issue that may cause a problem down the road.

Maybe a backread is now necessary since this thread had grown quite a bit.

Hey guys I don't really need to upgrade my processor now, don't really need the extra speed(will be putting fallout 3 in the next week or so, CoD 4 in a few months and I use photoshop) but I found a 2.6 ghz X7800 for 172bucks and was wondering if I should jump on it or wait a few months when I will probably need or really want to upgrade it, this guy sells tons of CPUs on ebay..so I am sure he won't be gone anytime soon, so should I wait and hope that the prices may go down and I can get it for maybe 100? :) Man I really rambled :D
    edit:$172 actually :D

I would say, bench it... see what 3dmark06/vantage/pcmark has a cpu score for it. Since it's a P-series, it'll still be 25W TDP hopefully, so it shouldn't matter. (same l2 cache anyway) But you're just running it faster stock... what's your Temps on the CPU side been like?

Don't get the x7800, it has an 800MHz FSB and thus you won't be able to utilize the 1066MHz FSB that your 7805 is capable of.

T9600, T9800, X9100 are definitely great upgrades if you can get a good price. We shall see whether or not the Q9100/QX9300 will work in this model.

Thanks. Yeah it doesn't make the game look that much different and it runs smooth so I'm sticking with the lower res lol
Sorry to hear about your wireless switch, I haven't touched mine because it was already on when I got the comp and I never shut the wireless off lol. Though I just tried it and it works fine. For now.

Also for the guy with the 2.4ghz reading, my WEI shows 5.2 for CPU. and CPU-Z shows everything fine for me, P8400 Penryn 2.26ghz.

Idle temps are 28 C on one core and 33 C on the other. Full load puts one at 53 C max and 57 C max for the other. ACPI TZS0 and TZS1 are both at 71 C max.

Is there a seal or anything on these that will for sure void a warranty if i open the back and take off the heat pipe / cooler assembly to examine the cpu?

Those are pretty high temps for Idle compared to mine
Mine idles at core0: 16c, core1: 13c (thats what its at right now)
And the computer has been running 3hours.
Also which program you guys use to stress the CPU to see max temp?

There hasn't been any sort of seal on the previous FX models, but I can't say for 100% certain that this one doesn't.

    I've been using prime95

My 6860fx with the t9300 idles at about 28 C and full load is 58 C, that's with AS5 used during the cpu change.

Ambient is about 69 or so.

    After 5miniutes of Orthos I get 42c core0 and 40c core1.
Literally after 35seconds from stopping the test, the temp is back down to 19c core0 and 16c core1

Can someone else check their CPU-Z for the multiplier. I'd say your multiplier is raised. By that FSB your multiplier should be 8.5x.

Now that I have AS5 all over my hands, lets see if I screwed it up or not :-D And I'll see if my temps are any better.

    Results already it seems.

Idle is down to 22 and 27 respectively from 28 and 33 so about 6 C just from AS5 over stock. And doesnt AS5 take a while to fully seat in?

Full load after a few minutes 51 C and 55 C from 53 and 57 so less of a drop at the top.

Anyone try ordering one of these (7805u's) online from BB yet? (Totally sold out according to the BB Website in my area at the moment...)

I'd assume it's the same machine...?

Hey all....new to the forums but Iv'e been a laptop gaming enthusiest for years. I have owned many gaming laptops through the years mostly Dells and Alienware. However, my last 3 have all been Gateway P series ( gotta love the 8800 GTS). Anyway, getting back to this discussion, 8638 seems kind of Low doesn't it? Maybe it's just me but I have read of P-6831fx users who upgraded to extreme processors (x7800, 7900) and are getting Low to Mid 9s.

It depends on whether or not you absolutely need a 15" notebook. If not definitely get the 7805, due to the 1920x1200 screen and much better cooler (just from the fact that the 7805 is in a more spacious chassis), not to mention the better graphics card in the GTS.

So far I like this P-7805u. I definitely like the higher screen resolution over the P-6860fx so far. For games it wont matter though. Just for kicks...

    WEI for P-6860fx w/ t9300 5.4, 5.1, 5.9, 5.8, 5.3
    WEI for P-7805u 5.3, 5.9, 5.9, 5.9, 5.7

I definitely agree with you there, if I didn't already have my 6860 set up to my liking (other than that T9300 I'm hoping to buy from you) I'd buy the 7805, instead I'm going to stick with my 6860 (again hopefully soon to have your T9300) and wait for an FX with a quad in two years or so (I have no info to back that up just a guess).

it depends on how you look at it. is portability a factor? gaming performance? screen resolution?

if portability was a factor, i would probably pick the 15.6" over the 17".

screen resolution i.e. want more space on your desktop for working with multiple windows? 7805

gaming performance? i would pick the better graphics card (GTS>GS)

Unless I get a bite tonite or tommorow during the day, I'll plan on pulling the t9300 out tomorrow night and reinstalling the t5550 back in. So if you still want it, it'll be yours.

Dont get me wrong... the 6860 is a screaming machine. As my 6860 is setup, it would play crysis on all but a few settings on high and play around 25 or so FPS, very playable and enjoyable. My desktop does about 28 - 30fps or so with a 8800 gts oc card on a q6600 @ 3.2 Every other 3d game i've tried can max out and be happy and fast.

I didn't see an answer to the 2.4ghz question posted, the reason you're seeing 2.4ghz instead of 2.26 is IDA (Intel Dynamic Acceleration) where the multiplier can go up a step when an application is primarily loading only one of the two cores.

Why does it stay all the time then if its only supposed to be on single threaded instances? Its permanently identifying as a 2.4ghz and even the bios picks it up as that (in theory when nothing is running)

You might be right, and that might be what its doing. Just seems strange. It seems to pass prime95 tests, so i guess I wont worry about it.

Anyone know where I can get some insurance for this laptop...accidental/theft, I am looking at Safeware, is there any cheaper ones out there? Also, how much money should I put in? $1050? I doubt I will ever let my eyes off it, but just to make sure :p...

Dunno, I believe mine also shows 2.4 in BIOS and the description somewhere else, but running CPUZ etc its almost always at 2.26, even running a single thread prime95 i couldn't get it to jump, but the second core has to be in a lowered sleep state which isn't likely with the rest of the vista background stuff going.

I have USAA insurance on my home and car, and there is a option for Computer coverage, for $8.00 a year I get $3,000.00 worth of coverage, total replacement value (what I paid) if I break any of my Computers, I think there is a $100.00 deductible.

My bios showed it as a P8400 @ 2.4ghz and then a speed of 2.4. Every program i've checked shows it named a P8400 @ 2.4 running at a speed of 2.4ghz. Nothing has shown 2.26ghz yet. My multiplier is always 6.0x or 9.0x depending on speed step. Reminds me a lot of my Q6600 in my desktop, which i guess is a 9.0x multiplier too.

The wierd part is that CPU Z identifies it as a Wolfdale and a Socket 775 LGA when I guess it should be what a Penryn? Socket P?

Well, obviously, something is wrong, because your CPU's cannot be cooler than your room temp. Moreover, they wouldn't even be the same as your room temp. They generate heat, and no heat pipe draws 100% of the generated heat away from the CPU. Therefore, unless you have replaced your passive heatpipe with an active thermo-cooler, something is wrong with your HWMONITOR software or your hardware.

1.49 i think back on page 78 or 79 of this forum i have a screenshot of it

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=334196&page=78

Also, it seems like when i"m just sitting in vista doing nothing, the gpu fan will sometimes go way up and then drop and kind of bounce around speed wise. Temp seems to be right around 50 C. Anyone else experience that?

I'm not so sure somethings wrong with it.
Running a stress test I sit there watching it go up and than back down perfectly fine.
I think the reason its so cool is because, like i stated earlier, I have a space fan blowing all over the computer itself from the left side (near the vent) so although the room temp is 70F (its 70F on the far wall of the room from me), around the computer it could and probably is colder because of the fan.
    So all seems well.
