Yeah, sorry I didn't mention it, but I did put it in high performance, still get the flunctuations...

I am basically using this laptop to replace my desktop so its been plugged in the whole time I've had it so far...

Its perfectly normal. Its how CPU's are supposed to act with speed step. Theres no use in running the highest multiplier when your just surfing the net or typing a word doc.

The CPU will give you the power you need when you need it. If your playing a game then you will get the highest multipliers if the game needs it. Other than that dont worry about it.

My x9000 very rarely runs at a full 3gHz, most of the time i'm running at 1.2gHz - 2.2gHz. I very rarely need all my processing power. But if i do need it the highest multipliers will kick in and i runn at full power.

I'm considering to pick one up today. I have a noob question and hopefully anyone can answer me. I ordered one 7811fx(200gb hdd space and 512mb vram, the rest same spec) from tigerdirect and it turned out to be a bad machine. It lockup whenever I ran 3dmark06 and 3d game like COD4. So, I'm going to return it. And now, I don't know whether I should go for this 7805 or just wait for another 7811fx(OOS now) and hopefully they will give me a machine without any problem.
    Any suggestion?
By the way the 7811fxx is costs $677 after live cash back.
Where this 7805 could turn out to be $1112 after tax.

Hey again, is anybody able to help me?

My last post here was about how the frames per second drops whenever I move my mouse in Team Fortress 2 (I haven't been able to try it in any other shooters, but Maplestory even had visible choppiness). I exchanged my previous 7805u for a new one, and I still have the same problem. Even with every setting on TF2 set to low, 0x anti aliasing, and even 1440x900 res, I have the same problem. I am very disappointed with this laptop, and I would like to know if there is a solution to this problem, and if not, I will take it back to Best Buy. Thanks if you can help me!

Ah ok, don't have too much experience with speedstep so I thought the flunctuations may have been abnormal...

The machines are basically identical, if you get a better price on the 7811 and it works then your better off saving 300+ dollars, the 7805 isnt going to give you any better preformance (its the same machine with a 1gb video card and thats really a non issue as the extra vram doesnt do anything)

You have to have 10 or 15 posts (i cant remember which) before you can PM and email other members, its to stop spam bots from destroying out little forum.

no worries, its just one of those things that laptops do for us. If you need extra CPU power for something not normally given it, download RMClock and you can lock off multipliers so it only runs with the fastest one. Though i recommend doing this only randomly... you dont want to constantly burn through your upper multiplier (heat and all)

I am not familiar with any games you mentioned, but do you have any software polling temps while playing, ie HW Monitor or Realtemp or similar? Sometimes these can interfere with fps cause things to be choppy. Close any monitoring programs, reboot and see what happens. Also, what kind of mouse software do you have installed?

Got a question, in regards to bestbuy exchange policy. I got a bit of flex near the wireless button the lower right hand side. Do you think I can get this exchanged? Is that reason enough or would they turn me back. Would they also be willing to just swap my current HD into the one I exchanged or should I make a backup before I bring it in.

    maybe...

all of them are made the same though... what would make you think a new one would be any different? Is it a manufactureing defect?

If they do let you exchange it i think they would let you keep the hard drive. I got to keep mine and the new laptops when i exchanged my 6860 way back (but my best buy geek squad rocks and i love them)

II think it's a defect since nobody else has it. If I rest my hand on the pad above the wireless switch and the keyboard on the lower right hand side. I hear it flex, also I'm able to move it a bit up and down. I just bought it so I don't want to have the wireless switch break(it happened to someone else here).

EDIT:yar_pirate when you exchanged yours did they let you keep your HD? What did you give them as a reason for the exchange?

The flex your talking about is on all the Gateway FX's, maybe you could goto Best Buy and try the floor model for reference.

Okay that puts me at ease. It was driving me nuts and I already gave my 6831 to my dad so I had no reference. Maybe I just didn't notice. Plus in a way I was hoping to get a LG screen =P

Or, fill that MMC card reader and ExpressCard/54 slot with something, coz mine doesn't flex since putting a CF reader in there.

Its just you, you have shiney new toy syndrome :p

My cousins has about the same flex level as my 6860. Which makes sence as its the same computer with just slightly different internals.

Flynnaz has your 5300 wireless card arrived yet?

Definitely, there is less flex than on the refurb 7811 I also currently have. It feels more solid, especially around the LCD bezel.

A Compact Flash reader. I've searched around, the most notable seems to be...

    1. Hauppage's 1500 TV tuner (sticks out though, but has over air HD, ATSC and NTSC)
    2. MCE remote (a combo usb reciever and remote I saw on Frys, but the express slot only functions as a storage bin, but it doesn't stick out)
    3. CF reader (What I have, bought $17 at Frys, and doesn't sticks out)
    4. ESATA ports (sticks out)
    5. Express/32 devices (like ESATA, USB2 etc...which will stick out)
    6. SoundBlaster Xifi something (upgrade your soundcard, will stick out)

What would I lose by installing Windows XP on the P-7805u?. Too much favorite software won't run on Vista x64. I have a copy of XP Professional with sp2 and since Vista 64 installs off of the EISA partition, I can't set up dual boot. (without buying a packaged CD version of vista $$$). It seems the only way to do it is to install XP over vista 64 partition.

I know, this is a different thing, I am saying that if this somehow rides it's way out 2.5 years, we won't be able to be reimbursed for our money and we will be stuck with the extra money we payed out for an overpriced warranty and as Brav said, most likely a downgraded resolution.

So if it makes it 2.5+ years yay.

But if 18 months from now someone spills grape soda on it or moving somewhere you drop it and slag the system you have the coverage that will get you a brand new laptop (for a small fee of 300 up front)

In 2.5 years there wont be a downgraded resolution from 1920x1200... that will probably be standard and 3200x2000 or some such will be the new high end screen

Microphone doesn't work, eSata probably doesn't work, and some of the quick launch buttons don't work (DVD and music). So far I haven't found any other issues, I just followed the 7811 XP thread and I just added to it how to get the quick launch buttons to stop showing up as no driver installed in device manager, but I haven't gotten them to work so far. I don't have anything eSata to try that, some people think that if you install the correct textmode driver and use AHCI mode it may still work (which is what I did), but no one has verified that.

Why not just install Vista 32bit (or windows 7 32 bit) and set up your 4th gb of RAM and a RAMDISK?

Get alot faster HD access and your programs will all run, and best of all you dont have to deal with XP.

I think the drivers for this machine should work with windows 7 (at least 64bit). I'm thinking about trying it out. Even though it's a beta, it's supposed to perform really well.

No I am saying that Gateway may have screwed up and meant for the screens to be a downgraded resolution(forget the exact, believe 1400x?) so if they do end up being around...you end up having a warranty for 150 bucks more than a 3 year warranty from safeware. I guess there is little chance that it will still be a model then...but for all we know BB could have parts they could switch in.

Thanks Big Mike. Found the 7811XP thread. I've got a Norton Ghost backup of both partitions. Never use the quick launch buttons. An eSata external drive would be nice for backup times, but not necessary. I have a good USB headset with mic I bought for Dragon Dictate (which doesn't work with vista x64). Otherwise I could dictate this reply hands free.

    Wow, interesting development here.

So I'm assuming that the P-7805u is basically a P-7811FX with all the problems fixed?

And at $1099 it seems to me that getting a $320 T9300 for my P-6860FX is not really worth it anymore. For that much extra I could just as well get a P-7805u...

you dont have to worry about that.

the 6831 isnt even 2 years old yet (though it might just be reaching that age) and there have been 4 updates since then, you have next to no chance that the 78XX will be around in 2 years. Plus Nehelam is coming out end of this year so they will have to put all new mother boards in to do with that.

I just got the latest version of VMware, which is highly recommended, but I haven't used it yet. If you just need XP to run your proggies that won't run under a 64 bit system, this might be a good solution. This way, you can still game on your host 64 bit Vista system (a 32 bit XP VM will run on a 64 bit host) :D

Ok, heres a question to other P-7805u owners... When you're sitting at idle on the desktop doing absolutely nothing... does your GPU fan randomly spin way up then drop back down and then kind of hunt around for a fan speed until finally leveling out some... then some time later do it all again. Mine seems to do that and I cant find any good reason for it. GPU temp seems to fluctuate between 46 and 51 C sitting at idle. The best buy tech suggested it was some sort of predictive intelligent fan control trying to anticipate heat and compensate.... personally it seems like a bios error or a fan / sensor problem. Anyone else have this issue? My P-6860fx doesn't do this.
