As long as you are not surfing the web without an AC or some music you won't hear it BMW, what best blocks out the sound is a loud game of CoD 4 ;)

The fans spin to cool. It's just moderating the temperature like it's supposed to. Why do people think a computer has a problem just cause the fans are spinning up? You should worry when they don't spin. That's when something is wrong.

It just seemed to be an abnormal cycle for a fan, usually it seems like fans step up and down a little less abruptly. Especially when GPU load is fairly constant (just running Aero) Only reason why I noticed it at all is because my 6860fx didn't do the same thing and so it stood out as being different.

If it hits 50C, it'll start that fan spin ramping... then it'll idle til..either you hit 42/43. The quicker you can get it to 42/43 that shorter the time it'll keep spinning.

All right guys. I am really tempted by the 7805u, but I HAVE a 7811 refurb that seems to be doing fine and frankly would probably end up keeping it. Would it be insane of me to own 2 laptops at the same time - especially two very similar ones?

I guess I need to be talked down.

Would my $$ be better banked for a bigger jump or is this deal with a wuxga screen something that won't be back for a long time. I say this because the wxga+ version does not appeal to me (I have become a resolution junky).

Also, for you guys with multiple laptops. Does one end up doing mostly closet duty? or does everything wind up finding its place...

    thanks

mugimba keep the refurb... i nearly bought the 7805u as well, but my brain tells me not to do it. the extra gfx vram is not going to be used due to the bit chipset and also you saved 30% of the 7805 value by keeping the 7811. Keep the 7811 and use it till the next big thing comes up

I dont have a 7811, but i have a 6860. It made sense for me to upgrade from the 6860, but I'd say there's no reason to upgrade from a 7811 especially if its working fine.

For any 7805u owners who have Half-Life 2 Lost Coast, I have a teensy favor to ask. I need the fps you get at the end of the in-game video benchmark using the following settings:

    1440x900 resolution
    textures HIGH
    models HIGH
    shaders HIGH
    shadows HIGH
    water REFLECT ALL
    color correction ENABLED
    HDR FULL
    anisotropic 16X
    anti-aliasing 4X MSAA
    vsync DISABLED

I'd also like to know whether you're using stock gpu clocks, or if you're oc'd what clocks you're using, and whether you're using high quality/quality/performance/high performance setting in the nVidia display control panel.

    Thanks very much in advance for any volunteers! I have a perfectly wonderful P-6860FX, but the gadget whore in me is clawing at my innards. ;_;

Hi guys my 7805 should arrive soon, and being a noob to vista i have a couple of questions:

What steps should i do for tweaking, better performance and generally making vista less of a pain...?

should i update all drivers in this lappy? or only the video ones?

has anybody come to a way of knowing by the batch number in the sticker if i got a wxga screen? (so i can return it for a full refund if i do)

anybody has upgraded their 7805 to a quadcore chip?

thank you all for youre answers, and this is by far the best forum :D

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=338221 has the batch #s opened so far, no WXGAs have been reported so far, if you're in one of those batches you're probably ok

I'd be surprised if anyones put a quad in a laptop that's only been released officially for 24 hours, but you never know I suppose.

I just got this lappy today and I have a quick question. I am thinking to create an application/drivers disc after uninstalling some napster,ms office, norton 360 kinda junkware. Will the disc carry those still?

I have a Gateway Windo Vista 64/32 bit that I get from the 7811fx and can I do a clean install on the 7805 and then use the application/driver disc to install those back?

I think so. It seems like the recovery dvds just put everything on them, I assume from a hidden recovery partition (as my 320gb hard drive shows up as 288 or so, rather than the 298 or so it should be.) I hear that Vista install CDs dont have copy protection (someone verify this please) and so if you can find someone with a cd/dvd just make a copy. You have a product key on a sticker on the bottom. Then just use the application recovery dvd you make to reinstall drivers and what software you do want.

Get Acronis True Image. Cheap and efficient for everything if you make an image just after everything is fresh and new...

I already re-installed once last night because the mike wasn't working. It worked fine for a while until I just restarted the computer. Then there was no audio input device for a few minutes, then Vista found a HD audio device and installed it, and now there's no mike again.

Do you think it could have anything to do with audio output through the HDMI port? I had a desktop do that once, it installed an audio device with the video card and it blocked some of the features of the regular sound card. Just a thought.

    In would goto gateways support site and download your sound drivers, I really don't like windows to install drivers if at all possible. Go Here;

    http://www.priceblaze.com/Product.aspx?ref=1&rfid=840483

look under audio Ddrivers, 64bit I assume.

I know no one has tested a quad core yet but i was wondering if the q9000 (2.0 ghz) would be supported. It is quite reasonable in price and should run alot cooler than the qx9300. Is the heatsink cooling capability the limiting factor or is it just not the right physical size to properly cover the cpu core? Or is it a bios microcode that has to be in place to run a quadcore? I have been reading the 7811 thread and i know it isn't supported but isn't that because gateway refused to add the proper cpu microcode to the bios?

Has it been definitively established that the 7811 and 7805u can not run any quad core CPU's, extreme or otherwise......or has it just not been experimented with enough yet to determine that for sure?

If I remember correctly, there was a heatsink deficiency on the 7811, but I don't recall anyone saying that it couldn't be remedied.

Also, wasn't there some discussion that the 7805u was supposed to support quad core CPU's? I think alitunay tried a Q9000 and was unsuccessful, but it's not clear if he updated the BIOS to 9C.12.00, or just used the stock BIOS...in which case, perhaps it might have been compatible....

Anyway, has it been definitively established either way?, or not?......

yeah no quad cores. I believe it was BMW that tried them first and it was a complete no go. And according to alitunay the heat sinks are the same between 78xx models so its basically a bust

Reading the posts it looks like Alitunay had a quad in hand and decided not to try it because he didn't like the way the heatsink lined up with the cores and was going to do an X9100 instead.

FWIW, since I hang out now in both neighborhoods, HP just upgraded their HDX18t line with the Q9000 and Q9100, plus added a 1GB 9600m GT option and a blu-ray burner.

    If you buy when HP offers their famous 30% off coupon, a Q9000-based HDX18t runs about $1400 (3GB, 320GB/7200, 18.4" 1080p).

Not quite a gamer PC, but still very nice. Having both the HDX18t and the 7805u now, the quality of the HDX18t is hands-over-fist better.

EDIT: Sorry, after rereading this, it sounds like a troll post for HP! I didn't mean it that way, I was just adding the Quad core discussion on the 7805u for those wanting a Quadcore option for cheap.
Like I said, I have a 7805u now (couldn't resist the cheap price) and although it's a nice unit (except for that cheesy keyboard with the Star Trek-looking font on the keys), I prefer the quality of the
    HDX18t.

I think I recall seeing Best Buy commercials which stated you could make their store your playground and test out the stuff. It showed a guy sitting there watching big screen tv's and playing video games.

From that commercial I would assume it would be okay to bring a screwdriver some thermal paste and a hacksaw (the laptop restraining bar gets in the way) and just pop a quadcore in to test in the display model...

Considering that 8 years ago I purchased a Toshiba from Best Buy with a UXGA screen and it is still rare to find a UXGA screen today, I don't think statement is entirely true. It doesn't seem like much attention is paid to screens by laptop manufacturers. Bigger HDDs and faster numbers apparently sells to the masses. It's mostly about marketing.

I agree about the rarity of the uxga and wuxga screens, which is sad because I love them. I think, however, that marketing has hit on a new poster child - 16:9 HD 1080 screens. I think we will start seeing a lot of those. I prefer 16:10 (for the extra height and res) but I will take 1080 over wxga+ any day.

I had a similar issue happen to me except instead of the mic, the headphone jack was not working. The speakers would not turn off and no sound would come out of my headphones. I went to the Gateway support site (before the 7805 was on there) and downloaded and installed the 64bit audio driver for the 7801. It fixed all of my audio issues.

Agreed on all counts. Although it still seems to be rare to find the 1080p screens. Surprisingly, most laptops do not even publish their screen resolution on the little "spec card" in the retail store. You have to do some investigating (like I did with the 7805u) to find out what you really have.

I believe they said 3 years costs $349, you have 2 weeks to add it after buying the laptop and if you don't use it you get nadda (it is insurance).

Correct, for the most part, the cost varies depending on cost of the computer. For this model it is $349.99, and you don't get reimbursed but every smart person will use it, when the plan is nearing completion just drop the darned thing, you'll get a new laptop. :D

Why not get a 3 year warranty from www.squaretrade.com for $ 224.99 (including a 25% off special they currently have) that includes Accidental Coverage?

Squaretrade is also a good choice if you are using a coupon. But adding accidental Damage is another $150 so it would be $299 plus they have a $50 deductible when claiming accidental damage. They do give you your purchase price in cash though while best buy either gives you another laptop or gift cards. Claiming accidental damage with Squaretrade is a big unknown.

I've bought 4 computers from bestbuy and got the coverage on each of them. Only ever used 1 of them when i screwed up my original 6860 trying to take it apart (sad day indeed for me)

But i like knowing that i'll be covered if something happens.

    wow 100 pages already
nuts... i missed the 1000th post by "that" much :p

    1000!!!!!!!!!

I'm thinking about getting the BB warranty... can someone let me in on exactly what they exchange for you? Equivalent specc'ed notebook or depreciated 7805u value or do they only give you the same one?
