I was browsing the Wistron FTP a couple weeks back..this rig is the 7811 replacement, with the larger GPU RAM, and it also has a mobo mod. I downloaded a bunch of data on it.. I'll try to post some tomorrow. This one should allow for Quad-core CPU, and also shouldn't have the TZS0 issue. Aside from VRAM, it looked IDENTICAL. Can someone plz confirm the BIOS version? I believe it should be the 9c.12 BIOS..speculation of course.

1 gig ram doesn't have any benefit at all right now i think. unless nvidia and/or the game manufacturers release drivers to take advantage of it.
btw , those with the 7805, can u check if there are any issues with light leakage. specifically the white cloud on the left side of the screen. check on a pitch black screen at different angles.

If this thing truly does support quad core I am extremely tempted to "drop" my 6860 and cash in on my Accidental Damage from Handling plan!!! Someone test it, quick! :D

Wonder if this will be widely available next week? The MSI GT725 is a very compelling alternative albeit at a higher price and possibly at higher quality. Definitely better graphic card ATI 4850.

I got one this morning. Mine also says WXGA on the box and palm rest, but is actually WUXGA.

Interestingly, the palm rest says "WXGA (1440 x 900)". This leads me to believe the WXGA/WUXGA mixup is a copy mistake and not a hardware configuration mistake. 1440x900 is WSXGA, and it would be really unusual to have a 17" laptop display at actual WXGA resolution (1280x800-ish...)

still doesn't explain the 1050 price though =)

If i knew that it was a mistake, i'd be more comfortable with opening the package. If it's not a mistake - i want to know .. where's the catch?

Cmon now.. This is Gateway, known for swapping 1920.1200 screens for 1440.900 when customers RMA for screen problems. They aren't sure what res is what.. And to anyone affraid to open the box, you can return it for mislabling if you want to. It says 2.0 GHz and it's a P8400 - or just be really careful so you can reseal the sticky ;)

The build quality is definitely not stupendous. Actually I find the unit aesthetically repulsive.

It seems like all the money goes into the guts, because the exterior looks/feels pretty cheap even for a consumer grade craptop.

I'll post back once I poke around with it a bit more.

So, my 7811 is supposed to arrive today ! yippee
I think I will keep the 7805 for myself and sell the 7811, assuming it is a good example, for $900 or so. If there is problems, I will simply return it. Either way I have a new, great lappy for Xmas, hurray !

If someone has a 7805, would you mind flipping it over and removing the memory/CPU cover and taking a picture of the exposed area so we can see the CPU heatsink/Fan to see if it can handle the Quad Core?

as long as the copper that touches the CPU heatsink is squared up, and not at an angle like some of the early 7811FXs then it will work just fine.

First time poster. Drove 75 miles this morning to pick mine up at BB. I've been kicking myself for missing out on the 7811 for $1250. Many thanks to all that have contributed to the forum. I how found the information most helpful in the evaluating and purchasing. I can confirm that I paid $1049 for the laptop and the Windows control panel, display settings shows 1920 x 1200. Not sure if there is another place to verify the screen resolution??? The box does state WXGA for the screen.

thank you guys. i saw a thread over at hard forum and i got this laptop for about 1150 after taxes and California fees. i haven't opened it yet because im waiting for someone to post their nightmare on why this laptop is $1050. it was HELL trying to buy it. I went to over 3 Best buys in the Socal area when I found one in stock it took over an over and 2 idiotic employees blowing me off telling me 1. there is such laptop 2. if there is such a laptop, we are out of it. I finally got fed up with it 10 minutes before closing and went straight to the manager and he went in the back and got it in less than 5 minutes. He apologized for his employees idiocy and I got my laptop.

I am curious as to how you knew they had one in stock...as I am trying to find one myself. All my BB say they don't have any...I am wondering if they have them stashed in the back and don't know it. What was your trick to get them to look and how you knew it was there?

the best thing to do is give them the skew number other than that they wont bother with it. after Christmas they might be more friendly, or if you get somebody who actually knows the computer and knows the gaming laptops they will surely help you out.

you need to go into Best buy armed with the product number. It's easy to get employees to help if you have that... otherwise they'll blow you off if you make them hunt for it.

9172511!! This number is your key to getting past retarded best buy employees. That is their SKU number that they can look up in their store inventory. If you try to type in that number into the Best Buy website or look up P-7805u, you'll come up with nothing. Force those idiots to look up 9172511, the SKU number in their computer's inventory. If it's not in that particular store's inventory, they can look up other store's inventories in the surrounding area. The key is that 9172511 number, write it down and bring it in to them. The idiot I had to deal at my Best Buy insisted that if an item could not be found on their official website, then it would not be in available at any store no matter what. Good thing I had the SKU number handy...

That is true. Although when I went searching for my laptop their "system was down" so they could not search through the item #. Extremely frustrating when one Best Buy says another has it in stock but they keep blowing you off.

Btw has anyone used their laptop yet? I want to buy an extended warranty through best buy but I already purchased the laptop. Can I go back and add a warranty or is it best not to get one and stick with gateways warranty(how long is it?)

It depends on the store, some stores got an early shipment while most others won't receive theirs until either the friday after Christmas or the following tuesday.

You can go back and purchase the GSBTP (Geek Squad Black Tie Protection) within 14 days of your purchase. On a $1049.99 laptop I believe the full three year is something like $329.99 or $349.99. I highly recommend it as it fully covers accidental damage so in two years when the FX with whatever sick nasty graphics card comes out you "accidently" "drop" it down the stairs and get what you paid for towards the new one, or at least thats what i'm considering doing with my 6860 for this 7805.

Based on the posts I've read, sounds like it's basically the 7801u, identical in everyway except for the typo of the screen res. But hardwarewise, it's the same laptop with a different name and price. Doesn't seem like gateway cut back on anything to sell for less. Probably just wanted to see how sales were doing on newegg before bringing it over to BB?

P.S. I'm still pissed that newegg doesn't have a return policy. Now I'm stuck with a computer that's over half a grand more. >=|

Wow thanks! Everything I needed to know. How is the GSBTP warranty? Are they knowledgeable and fast? I'm going to be using this laptop religiously for the next year or two for my classes and I need to know how efficient their repair system is. Seems pretty pricey but im sure its worth it.

It is a bit pricey but if just before the three years is up you make sure to "drop" it it ends up working out in your favor. The standard turn around time for repairs is two weeks, but as we all know parts on backorder can slow things down in a hurry. If you or anyone else has any other questions feel free to PM me or just post in here.

Big, you catchin on to the E-wrecked trend? I thought you BB employees had standards. ;) kiddin bro.

This setup is a STEAL. If it's Gway once again using wrong screens, that's doubtful. As mentioned previously, the system has been scheduled. I didn't wanna post about it and look like a fool, cause I wasn't sure when it would come out. Anyhow..bout to post some different files for download in regards to the rig.

I have been using mine constantly the past two nights. I have been playing Fallout 3 on full quality at 1920x1200 without a hicup. WoW-WOTLK is brilliant on this screen. For those of you worried about opening it, I was told by the BB rep that since we opened my brother's in the store before we bought it (because I wanted to verify the screen resolution) that we would not have to pay the restocking fee if we wanted to return it within 30 days. He said technically if it is opened in the store then it is basically sold as a "display model" and is not subject to the restocking charge.

If you are worried about opening it but want to play, break it out and run your benchmarks. You will not be disappointed, but if for any reason you want to return it, just tell them it was a display model. They have no way of knowing at customer service and shouldn't charge you to restock.

My only complain would be the keyboard layout and the fan gets load sometimes but its really nothing. Haha I really regret not buying both of them so I could give one of you guys a chance to get one.

I would suggest reading the following link. There are some good reference for gaming benchmarking.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=168689

The site will direct you to a different site to download the file. Not sure if there is a better way to do it. Be careful which download server your select.. The first one chose showed a time of 2 hours to download the program and I have a cable modem. Found one the would at about 500kbs, the total file is about 420MB. Cant remember for sure.

I know there was a thread on setting up a new laptop with all kinds of cool freeware software i.e. virus scan, firewall... but can't seem to locate the thread anymore. I'll post it if I come across it.

Beautiful screen!! Finally after 2 7811's with white clouding issue! Mine also has the 9c.11.0 BIOS. Loaded Everest and this laptop runs about 5 to 6*C hotter on the TSZ0 and 1 chipsets, but the good news is that my 7811's never went that high before jumping to the 98*C bug so it appears there is a design change/fix!! Today will be overclocking day to see how high and confirm no TZS0 bug.

If I pull the heat sink off do the north bridge/south bridge chipsets have TIM or do they use thermal pads? I'm thinking some nice MX-2 would work nicely for some temp reductions...

As I stated earlier it isn't set for floor display until 1/04/09 so I'd say it would probably hit BBY.com right around New Years. I'm actually going into my store right now to check it out.

I will make some calls today to see if CT BB on the shoreline have them, i.e. Orange and North Haven, CT.

If you can look those BB stores up I did appreciate it.

BB in West Hartford might have it. But traffic will be real bad today.

    Thanks,

    :)

There's a thermal pad for the Northbridge.. don't mess with it. Just leave it to do it's job. Can't hurt to throw some AS5 on the CPU tho. However, Gateway does a decent job with applying the thermal grease. But, cant hurt and could help.. :)

    sweet 1920x1200 as well!

I would also like to say that the display looks a lot better!

Just got mine this morning too! Quite a few around the DFW, Texas area. I do wish that Gateway would integrate the light-up keys that the MC models comes with. But regardless, this is a killer deal for a badass notebook.
