I would try it but not sure about what the TZS0 issue is... I know it has something to do with the down clocking of the cpu (i think)

    E-wrecked is banned?

Or is that just some cute title that one of the mods gave him?

thats e-wrecks half-assed attempt at being funny...when you join the senior users group (700 posts or more) you have the ability to change your title.

if e-wrecked was really banned, his name would be in red, along with the title of Banned being in red as well.

Just out of curiosity, regardless of HSF positioning, I'd like to see a pic of the memory/CPU area if anyone wants to pop their panel off real quick and snap a pic and post it.

There are two things that can make this computer better than the 7811.
    1. Better screen with no ghosting and leakage
    2. Better heat handleing with the TZS0 undercontrol and fans working as they should.

I'll get one next week and compare this to the 7811. I may also throw in a qx9300 just to test the quadcore support.

Just picked a 7805u (San Carlos, CA) and wanted to share my thoughts for what it's worth (I'm pretty much a noob, but read a lot of the forums here). I have the a Tigerdirect refurb sitting side by side with the new one both running and comparing at the same time. Got my refurb 2 days ago, so I'm fresh with both machines.

1049.00 best buy + 299 (2 year accidental droppage warranty). Seemed like the right thing to get since I plan on having a mishap in 23 months or whenever this model quits being sold, so I can get a new one :). Yes I do have some guilt about this. I would appreciate any opinions on the coverage and whether it's worth it... $299 does make it less of a bargain.

    New machine's BIOS is: 9c.11.00
It does have the 1920x1200 resolution. The screen does not have any of the white ghosting that my refurb did. What I also notice is that the screen is a bit brighter with better color than the old unit. I checked all color profiles and they match, so it looks to be a different screen altogether. No clue how to check. Also the 7805 has refresh rates of 59 & 60mhz where the 7811 was only 60mhz

My refurb also had a stuck pixel that wouldn't unstick... tried about 4 different suggestions and no luck. Also had a bunch of that white blotchy stuff that can be seen from the side, but in all honesty it never bothered me at all.

An interesting side note is that I can use a SD disk on the BestBuy 7805u as a vista Speedboost disk and I could not use it on the 7811p. Driver issue on the old machine?

I guess the TigerDirect machine is going back monday. It does have that stuck pixel, but other than that it's really a great deal. Almost hate to pass it up. For a few hundred more I'm thinking the 7805u is a better machine. Maybe the extra 512 memory on the graphics card can be used at a further date.

    Cheers!

Really great laptop for the price, the specs on this thing sure beat the tar out of everything else out there at that price, now if only Gateway will finally get rid of that stupid color scheme!
You would think they would at least have one re-fresh of the color scheme, but it's still the same from the original 6831-FX.

So i found this site while looking for any information on the laptop I just purchased, and it happens to be this laptop, but, they were out and were getting new ones in January 1st. Any way the new laptops might have the actual speccs given?

I've had this 7805u now since Christmas and have some good news to report. First, the screen is MUCH better than my previous 2 7811 screens - no white clouding or banding including looking off axis!! :) :) Still have some minor light bleeding mostly on the bottom and a little bit on top but nothing out of the ordinary for many laptops I've seen/used.

The fan seems to be a little better controlled, but it still jumps to higher RPM when it first comes on and then settles down and the frequency of the random fan speed ups appears a little less, but it is still there.

I can also confirm NO TZS0 OVERHEATING reporting bug - I can overclock with no sudden spikes to 98*C and thus no auto CPU down-throttling!

The only negative I can find so far is it appears the 1Gig GPU memory chips are either lower quality or more heat sensitive than the 512M video memory on the 7811's. I can not overclock my RAM or Shader clocks nearly as high as my two previous 7811's (both of those would goto at least 1000MHz/1800). Stable numbers on this machine are 950/1725.

So, best forceware drives so far are xfastest 180.70's (versus stock 176.xx, and nvidia 180.84's). With an overclock of 710/950/1725 I get 9419 on 3DMark06. My temps are 57*C/69*C for TZS0 and GPU. Your thoughts anyone on those temps (I have the back raised up about 3/4")?

I wonder if I should remove the HS assembly and try MX-2 for a TIM....what do you think?

My device Manager:Monitors displays "Generic PnP Monitor". Under details/hardware ID it states: "Monitor\LGD3901"

I hope this means its a LG brand monitor!

Yep it does . the 7811s had AUO lcds and why people can see a difference if they have both side by side .

I went to my local Best Buy today, I had a sales person lookup the part number, and they had two "in the back" which was right above me in a rack :). Anyway I asked to buy one and they told me I can not buy one until the "street date" of 1/4/09, I tried to talk them into it, they went and asked the manager, he said no. They told me Gateway could pull all their inventory if they did. Come on with the economy the way it is, they should have on problem selling me one. I wonder if they are on the 1/4/09 ad?

Bighops323, can you give me any advice on this?

I will be selling my P-6831 FX 250gb 5400rpm, 4gb ram to pay for part of my upgrade :)

It's manager's discretion, I'd try again another day, if you get another manager he/she might be more lenient.

    Send in a female.

That's how i get stuff done. When i run out of options talking to people, i send in the wife. She's cute and very sweet/bubbly so with just a bit of work she always gets her way. Tends to work out in my favor :p

I am going down to my local bestbuy store tomorrow to look at this laptop. My Compal HEL 80 LCD screen is spoilt and it costs approx 300-500 for a new 15.4" lcd screen, and the worse part is that my laptop is not even worth that amount of money FIXED. The laptop is 2/1/2 and i am really disappointed that it couldn't last longer.

Does Gateway have any reliability issues that I should be looking out for?

    Thanks

WOW!!! I was NEVER going to consider a 17" or a Gateway, but if this thing is still there with the same price by the time I get back on the 2nd then I'm pretty sure I'm gonna HAVE to buy one, it's a mind-boggling deal.

For those spending beaucoup dollars on a warranty, pay attention to your credit card agreements. Many(!!!) have a program whereby if you use the CC to pay for the entire(!) purchase you are automatically covered for an extended one year. This does not add on an extra year to an otherwise extended warranty such as BB (equaling 2BB + 1CC = 3), but does give you a free 2nd year (1GW + 1CC). BB and others know this yet still offer to take your money off your hands.

They take better care of it anyways (not).

That seems to be the most logical explanation. Its too good to be true for these new 7805 models to have superior specs to the 7811s previously sold at Best Buy and at a lower price. These have the exact same specs as the 7801 model which is $1600 at Newegg.

So it looks like these first models mistakenly are shipped with superior components then they are supposed to have and the later models will have the specs officially listed.

So we had better buy these 7805s while we can.

So then the current run of these notebooks are "Christmas specials", and when the street date hits, 1/4/09 i believe, the specs and or the price will be different. Correct? Interested to see how this plays out.

Question? Is there a GPU anti-overclk throttling feature?

Coz if I overclock the GPU quite a bit (say 700/985+/1800)...and rthdrbl is running at 1920x1160 something, then it'll stop, then stall... when i rerun it'll run half speed (even though GPU-Z, CPU-Z, and HWmonitor tells me nothing like speeds are halved is happening)

I was expecting that if I over shoot the clock, it'll just hang like in desktops...

I just bought mine yesterday. I couldn't find anything on it but they didn't have the other laptop I was looking for. They only had one and it was still in the box. Not even up on display. I was shocked when I read what it had, then I asked them to do a system Check. 5.2!!! That is extremely high. I bought it on the spot and love it. And, if there are none on the floor, ask BB to open it and have you look at it. You'll get an extra 10% off like I did because it's now a floor model.
I do have one problem... I can't figure out how to keep the resolution but increase the font.

I just called 5 stores and all of them had the same story: the non-computer division receptionist found 1 in the system, once I'm transferred to the computer division, the tone changed and they didn't have it anymore. They're either trying to adhere to the 1/4/09 street release date or trying to correct the specs/price, I'd love to know which lol.
