Bingo! I still own the Toshiba Satellite 5105-S501 which came with the then "downgraded" 1400x1050 rez 15.4 inch screen. The next model up or the S502 and S503 had the 1600x1200 screen which was insane. The text was so small that I got a headache after playing with them at my local CompUSA...remember that place? ;)

My decision to get the 7805u was based solely on the fact that it was the cheapest WUXGA+ screen out there. I wanted something that has the same 16:10 ratio and resolution as my Dell 2408 desktop monitor for web surfing which I do a lot of.

Due to the nature of the Quad Core CPU's I doubt HP will offer such a steep discount on new technology! 30% off?

10% off for an open box? I highly doubt it. Probably more like 2-4% at most.

This was in the Sacramento CA store.

I see how it could be possible.
I mean they make us pay 15% to return an open box, only right for them to pay us 10% to buy an open box :D

    the goop is caked on.
Thats why OEM used it. It gets the job done cheap and a blind monkey can put it on.

Just clean it off with 90%+ rubbing alcohol and it'll come right off (i use my wifes makeup sponges :p )

Anyone find a notebook sleeve to fit this puppy in?

I'll be traveling with a backpack that already has straps to put one in, but not a specific laptop compartment. So I just want a sleeve to protect it from dust and scratches. Something in kind of a wetsuit strechy type material. Neoprene perhaps?

I use a briefcase, but i have hear quite a few people talk about the "brain cell" sleeve being one of the best for the FX (due to it being slightly larger than a normal 17in lappy)

They discontinued that program early in 2008. To upgrade now, you need to pay first, and then they mail you a disk.

so did everyone replace the thermal paste? I'm considering doing that but I not sure if it's worth the time and effort. Plus the main paste I want to replace is the gpu but I don't think I can get to that.

Does anyone know if the 7805u can be upgraded with a blu-ray drive? I want to get one but need to have blu-ray playback - do not need a burner. I have read that some people were successful at upgrading the drive to blu-ray in the 7811 which is virtually the same notebook.

Yep its possible, Just get a SATA blue ray player (for laptops) and swap them out. Its one screw under the rubber "U" shape.

After that load your driver for the optical drive and get a player with a blu-ray codec pack and your good to go.

Thats another reason the FX's are so nice anything we can actually upgrade is so bloody simple and easy to do. :D

Sorry not to sound mean or anything but has he tried adjusting the screen res in the nVidia control panel?

Just acquired a 7805 myself and did get the wuxga+ screen. Was surprised by the size and weight of the power adapter shipped with this unit (literally a brick in size and weight) and was wondering if anyone has tried smaller/lighter AC power adapters for this laptop. Thanks

It's a 120W AC adaptor, you're not likely to find one significantly less "brick-ish", comes with the territory with a gaming/DTR type laptop this size. I can't imagine how big it would have been 5-6 years ago, my ZE4145 used a 95W that was just slightly smaller and lighter, and its not even a 1/10th of what this laptop is.

Hypothetically speaking you could probably get away with a smaller one if you were willing to forgo charging the battery and using it at the same time, but finding out what size would still work and remembering to remove the battery etc would be a pain.

if the OP didnt disappear after his one and only post he could edit the thread and the first post to reflect an FAQish thing

good to hear it would cause an uproar if Gateway changed the specs all the sudden after this much good word of mouth press they've been getting

You should get the 220watt power block its honestly twice the size of the 120 i originally got with my 6860

Big Mike, from a draw perspective is the 120W adapter a must or can a 90W unit work?

Ouch! I'll wait for prices to drop. The P7805u is an excellent machine to use while I'm waiting. I used my ThinkPad T30 1.8ghz for 6 years before deciding to crank my laptop experience up a notch.

YES! please dont try to run this on a 90watt... its likely to cause a fire :(

I think we calculated that the 68XX series was only about .3 amps from overloading the 120 thats why they hissed so bad (i'll have to find the post)

the 78XX series has a bit better power consumption, but i wouldnt risk going that low do to the chance of wires buringing up trying to pull more than they are supposed to

I doubt it'd cause a fire, but if the laptop without battery for example was just over 90w you could well trip the thermal or overload protection in the power brick and have your laptop just randomly shut off. If you got an ammeter or something similar to measure the current draw without battery and charging the battery with the unit off you could possibly figure out how small you could go, but you'd want to leave some headroom too, the current draw skyrockets when you do something that uses the CPU and GPU both.

Those are excellent. I've been using them for years on my Dell's and HP's. Very thin and light, and work flawlessly.

I just bought a bunch of the same one at Frys.com as refurbished for $14.99. They are AC only (no car or plane use), and I just received them today. I couldn't believe they came with all the tips I needed (N19=Dell, N30=HP and N3=Gateway)!! Here's the link: Kensington 120W AC Universal Adapter for $14.99

You can get tips for cell phones and other electronics (MP3 players, etc) from Kensington or on ebay.

    Highly recommended.

Not necessarily true!! Kensington Thin and Light 120W adapter:

About 3/8" think and weighs about 6oz, I'd guess.

There is also a DC only one for your car, 120W, that is about the size of a big book of matches.
    Amazing technology. :)

Well the 14.99 refurb is a great deal, but the new one for 130 bucks is pretty steep, I guess price no object its not impossible to make (its probably a switching power supply) but I figured they'd be cost prohibitive, which to me at least 130 bucks is, but 14.99 is definately not, and the car one is a little easier to make as it's just changing the voltage not converting it, 120W is pretty hefty for a lighter socket though, lol. (i actually just ordered a 14.99 one for myself)

Nifty, i've never seen a 120 so small. That would deffinatly make the 120's more portable for people.

I still prefer my 220 for the nice overhead i get with all the extra power my 6860 pulls from stock. BUt a stock 78xx series should run on a good solid 120 with no problems.

For anyone that gets(or has) those do they still "squeal" like the gateway supplied ones?

Well, keep in mind it is a UNIVERSAL adapter, and can be your only charger that you travel with to keep your computers, cell phone, and MP3 players charged while traveling. For that luxury, $130 isn't that bad. But, I've never bought them new, always refurbs and never spent more than $40.

I've probably purchased and used/sold 30-40 of these over the last couple of years. They do work, and Kensington support is the best. They will replace a broken refurb with a brand new retail unit when you contact them. :)

lancorp, you say that refurb kensington psu comes with an adapter tip that fits our Gateways? (I am assuming that the 7805 uses the same tip and psu that came with my 6860). The description from the fry's website says this:

Weight: 7.0 oz.; with AC cord, output cord, velcro bundling strap, and 1 adapter tip, 12 oz. (Dell AC only PA-1650-05D weighs 14 oz. with cord and rubber strap.)

    Does that mean anything?

It said that when I bought mine too, and I expected ONE tip in the box. All 10 units I received today from Frys.com had a nice set of 5 or 6 tips. And yes, the N3 tip comes with it and works with the 7805u just fine. (N3 and N14 tips are for Gateway,
and both come with the refurb unit. N14 must be for a different Gateway because it's too small for the 7805).

So, would everyone suggest this laptop over the Asus G50VT-X1?

I will be picking between them this coming Monday.

Also, is there a review that I can look at to get some detailed info?

    Thanks!

I'm sorry if this is kinda old question.

I was playing Bioshock at 1920*1200 and all high setting.
I saw the temp of my GPU has gotten to 72C about (163F)
Does it hurt my GPU ?(I already lift the front and back of my laptop about 1 inch)

Any suggestion? Thanks in advance : )

72 isn't bad for a laptop GPU, I've seen desktop GPUs get hotter than that.
