No, this temp is pretty fine![]()

I confirm that my power brick has the hissing noise. Although its not constant. I'll be calling gateway about that in the morning. Also the fan speed seems somewhat constant. I do notice the quick fan spinup from time to time but I haven't noticed it. I'm about to jump into my first gaming session since owning it.
Still haven't found a sleeve. To whoever recommended the brain cell- Sorry that won't work. It's too big. I'm going to be deploying in the next few days and I need something that will fit into my backpack. I want to protect the laptop from dust and scratches getting into it while it sits in my backpack when traveling throughout my deployment. -
Thanks a million = )

I got this Targus today and the p-7805u fits with the battery still installed. The laptop compartment is a top loader and has adequate padding. BestBuy has them on sale at $49.99.

Can't help you with the cooler. -
anyone know a hard case I can't find one that is cheap...and I think it has to be 18" because ythere is about a half inch on each side of the screen..
-
They take the bezel into account when cases are made....
-
I have been using this case for a while now. I can fit my huge 17" Dell Inspiron 9300 inside so I'm sure my soon to get here P-7805u will also fit.
-
For notebook coolers, everyone should get the NZXT if you're worried about temps. the gateway has insufficient cooling for its powerful components.
-
Lancorp, thanks for the incredible pointer on the kensington 120W adapter. Just picked up one. Will let you know if mine comes with all the tips since the description says otherwise.....but then we know that's not always true
-
Just a couple of interesting pricing notes (well I think they're interesting...the rest of you may not
)
BB website now lists the 7805 as "Our Price: $1049" whereas through this morning it was listed as a sale price at $100 off the normal price of $1149 that was effective through Sat the 10th. Has BB made this the permanent price on the 7805?
Also...BB has the 7811 listed in their outlet for $1279 ($170 off their original price of $1449) - CNET Product Alert threw me an e-mail notice that the 7811 is available online again.
Any reasoning why anyone (namely me) would purchase the 7811 for $230 more than the 7805? -
Since all 10 of mine from frys.com came with identical tips, I think they all do.
You're welcome!
-
Just put my second hdd in and re-installed the OS with raid 0. Works great
-
I believe Gateway.com originally had the P-7805u quoted at $1199 MSRP when the specs said DDR2. When they updated the specs to DDR3 the MSRP went up to $1299. BB.com still says DDR2 and I would assume they will raise the price like Gateway did once they figure out what is inside this product.
I would jump on the P-7805u sale price if you are in the market for a lappy right now because I don't think it will be cheaper than the 7811 for much longer in my opinion. -
DasWax did your p-7805u come with the WD3200BEKT like other people have been getting? And, which raid driver did you use? I plan on raiding my notebook when I finally get it.
-
My P-7805u did come with the WD3200BEKT, I bought a second from newegg.com, and now have a 7200rpm Raid 0
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136280 -
I did the same thing
Just used the recovery CD's I burned and my raid 0 was found right away.
-
Others have tried that and it didn't work for them. Grats! I hope mine works that easily.
-
You still need to setup raid in your bios, I think there where some steps missed in this story.
Its easy, it tells you how in the manual too, if you need help. -
Picked up the last one in my local store. Confirmed that it's 1900 x 1200, which makes the text a little small to my standard. There is no 1400 x 900 option supported so those who're familiar with larger text might have some issues reading this laptop.
Benchmarked in Vista gives 5.2 (lowest part is CPU). I spent an hour to benchmark all the gaming laptops next to it including the Toshiba Qosmio, HP 17DVT, Dell XPS 1710, Asus and this one has the best score. Others only give 5.0 max.
Down part is no bluetooth supported, but I hardly use it and bluetooth dongle is like $10. I really like the fact that it has eSata port.
Still wondering what to do with it thou... -
In vista you can set the font size "Adjust Font Size (DPI)" right click on your desktop, select Personalize, look in the top left for that option, select it, and reboot.
-
I recieved my Intel wifi 5300 today, I am debating returning it, or trying it hooked up to two antennas on my P-7805u, or upgrading my wifes P-6860fx, what say my freinds out there? I did ajust my router settings, and now connect at 150.00kbps on my P-7805u, was connecting at 65.0kbps.
-
Hey, there ya go. You got the 150kbps now. Unfortunately I share the sentiment, having no third antennae does reduce the allure of the 5300 upgrade (added range).
-
To those that have the P-7805u from BB, how is the over heating?
-
@evilmadboy, what over heating?
-
Oh thanks for the tip. Forgot that
-
So far no problem, I'm running it with a cooler anyway... For this kind of machine heat is expected so always run it with a cooler.
-
yeah, i just have mine sitting on a regular desk right now and don't have issues, once in awhile the secondary fan spins up quickly every so often for a few seconds and thats it
when playing a game demo i didn't notice it much (though i had speakers up, i assume it ran more than normal due to the GPU being used more heavily)
only issue i noticed was when gaming the power supply hissed, but it was on a rug i have it raised now, testing to see next time when i game for quite awhile and am using a ton of power if it still does it -
I remember for the 7811 there were reports of overheating big time.
See, i am going to be gaming alot the last thing i want is for it to overheat all the time.
And speaking of overheating, what would be a good cooler to get from BB. -
@sdgundamx, It's DDR3.

I dont know if the 5300 is compatable with our shipset on the 6860. It would intresting to find out though.
But we already have the best previous generation WIFI card and i dont know how much better the 5300 would actually be.
Your probably off sending it back and get your money back (to put toward your x9100 upgrade
)

The larger Targus travel adapter (home/car/plane) works with it just fine and is smaller, lighter, and more versatile.

Thanks.

So I saw this "review" of our P-7805u FX, and
http://compreviews.about.com/od/deskreplace/gr/GatewayP7805uFX.htm
... One of the CONS was "needs a higher resolution monitor"....
-
That entire review could have been done just by knowing the specs and looking at the picture on gateway.com. Since the specs are wrong (at least for everyone that has bought one so far) the review is wrong. I would bet that Mark Kyrnin has never even seen one of these computers in person.
I avoid review sites that surround the review with ads.
*HE BE DECEVIN YOUR MOM* -
Yeah I'd say he just compared the specs to the 7811 being told its the same basic laptop with xyz spec changes and wrote the review based on that. I sent him an email mentioning the resolution discrepancy and asking if he actually had one with that screen. By no means an unheard of practice, but I prefer they at least disclose that the review is based on the similarity to a previous model and the spec changes made only.
-
I too had the 65Mbs limit. I went to the wireless device and took the N off 20 Mhz and set to auto also enable the throughput enhancement and now I too am at 150 Mbs.
I think this is a 1T2R setup, haven't looked at the card yet............ -
The other possiblity is that Gateway sent him an early production model with the correct screen. It is still to be determined if the WUXGA+ screen is here to stay or a case of mix up, or gateway clearing out inventory.
edit:
Having read the very general, simplistic review I have to agree that he probably never touched the laptop. -
I think if this was a real review there would be some mention of light bleeding, or flexing of the keyboard or palm rest, bulkiness of the power adapter, ease of use or lack of. Just something that would make you believe he actually held this product in his hands. It was just an opinion of specs vs. price.
-
Agreed that eventually BB will up the price. I guess one point of my previous question is that BB is no longer listing $1049 as a 'sale' price but rather 'our price.' Originally it was quoted with the regular $1149 and a sale price of $100 off...just curious if BB has actually dropped the price (for the moment) to $1049 or if this still anticipated to go back up to $1149 after Saturday.
BB guys on this forum...thoughts??
(I know...I know...putting waaaaay too much consideration into $100...but I'm picking up a new laptop towards the end of next week (hopefully the 7805) and am hoping supplies and the price point will last). -
Crap...and of course now the 7805 is on back order from BB.
Website lists it leaving the warehouse in 1-2 weeks...may be interesting to see if the WXGA screens now begin coming with the next shipment to hit the warehouse or if the pricing will jump up (or both).
Knew the supply wouldn't last... -
If everyone is so hot over this new P-7805u, why is not anyone (e.g. all the users here) posting reviews over on www.gateway.com and mentioning this hot forumn with a new posting every 60 seconds?
-
Why? I live here, not at www.gateway.com. What's your point?
-
The point is to spread the word that you love your P-7805u and that there is a great forumn here so get more members together.
-
That is what I did, plus on my Dlink DIR-655 I set it to N only, and thats when I saw the 150.0 speed, thanks for the information to confirm
-
I was idly looking at laptops on Sunday when I stumbled across the BestBuy ad and eventually this thread. When it was pretty clear I could be getting a great deal I went shoppin' and came home with this sweet laptop!
So, here's a rundown of my experience with it and tips and whatnot:
First thing I did, out of the box, was make the backup DVDs. Then I created an account other than "Owner", set a password, and then removed "Owner". Uninstalled Norton 360 (I never had as many "family tech support" calls as I've had because of that bloatware!) and installed Avast Home, then other software I normally use. Finally, I resized the OS partition and added a couple others, then made a backup copy of the OS partition (hidden) once I got it stabilized.
Vista-64 bit isn't as bad as I feared... most all my apps work fine. I only recently upgraded my main PC from XP to Vista Business (32-bit) and so I was prepared for some headaches that never arrived. (Yeah, XP is da bomb but I wanted to get used to the new stuff before Windows 7 drops - and it already came in handy because a month ago I'd have probably said "No" to a Vista box, especially 64-bit.)
I activated Office 2007 (Home and Student) in a snap using one of my remaining two licenses (I recently bought that for my desktop at half-price - Newegg).
The screen is the LG 1920x1200... pretty nice, no dead pixels I can find. Used "Tireal TFT Test" to run some solid colors... white definitely looks a bit splotchy, black has slight brightening at top and bottom.
The memory is the same DDR3 everyone seems to be getting as well.
I chose a backpack this time around, the Targus Shield. It fits with room to spare, and reviewed better than the Targus XL (which doesn't have as much back padding and is apparently more prone to strap rippage). The Spyder and such looked nice but I prefer to have an all-in-one bag for travel and commuting. Provantage was amazing as always... I'm in the Chicago burbs and I got my bag the next day (FedEx ground shipping - not bad for 9 bucks, YMMV):
http://www.provantage.com/targus-tsb082us~7TGU904E.htm
Yeah, I'm noticing that strange occasional whine from the power supply. Might be calling them soon to get that rectified.
The fan is annoying... would prefer it ran constantly than revving up loudly every few minutes.
Keyboard - I'm not the first person to say this, but it sure would've been nice if it was backlit as I recall seeing on other such Gateways... seems pretty simple.
USB - if the ports were any deeper they'd be useless. Not sure why the video is on the side like that.
Touchpad - strangely it has no setting to auto-disable it when a mouse is plugged it. If you know a way to make that auto-disable checkbox appear please post it here - I get the impression it's not as simple as adding some registry entries (the driver is capable but this version of it has that feature absent).
The lid is rather flexible... I'd prefer it was more solid. Seems like it'll be vulnerable to damage.
Two words: Fingerprint. Magnet! If it had the fingerprint reader option one would have little trouble lifting a million of one's best prints from the case, screen, etc.
I didn't get the BestBuy extended warranty. Between Gateway and AMEX doubling the warranty I feel pretty good.. but accidental damage coverage would be nice so I'm still pondering it (anyone have luck negotiating that with Gateway, etc.?)
The webcam is silly. Or maybe I just looked silly on it.
Thanks to this forum (primarily, though I did a LOT of reading in a short time) I got my money's worth and then some!
-
GRatz on your FX, there is a version of the thouchpad driver that lets you auto-disabl it, I think it was on my P-171x FX laptop, I will check into it.
-
Am i able to hook up this laptop to my HDTV?
So use my HDTV as a monitor for it? -
Sure, just plug in an HDMI cable.
-
Yes you can, use your HDMI, if you need a cable, get it online, about $6.00 for a 3', $12.00 for a 6'.
