Yeah mine will spend most of its life on a desk or in a bag. I'm thinking your best resale times will be before next holiday season ramps up (hopefully the economy will start showing some sign of life too) at say maybe 650-700 bucks or into 2010 early at say 550-650 on the conservative side. If you do some upgrades like say blu-ray and P9600 you could probably keep the value and usability up for a while longer. I figure if I can make a move then I may, if not oh well, its a nice laptop and im not that big on new games so i can always just run it into obsolescence if I can't make a good deal on it. I could be way off base too though, lol. As long as integrated graphics dont pull off some miracle I'd expect these things will hold their value pretty decent for a while.

I paid 1,123 after tax and everything.
Think only worth 561.50 after only a year? :\

Yeah mines spending its "in use" time on my lap with a flat surface thing. And its "off" time on a desk.
Which bag are you using? (If its a backpack, thats what I need)

I guess I was rounding up in my head. I think around $600 ish. Mostly because not only will these depreciate but newer models will get cheaper.

    The 6831 was $1450
the 7811 often sold at $1250 on sale at BB.
the 7805 will go onsale for $1050 and probably cheaper in its life cycle.

This is only in a span of less then a year and price have dropped $400 and tech has improved (6831 came with a 1.6 core duo cpu).

I am not saying you can't find a sucker on fleabay :)

It'll go on sale with the WXGA+ for $1050 though.
I assume the LG, WUXGA+ is probably $150ish more..?

If you sell the panel by itself maybe. On fleabay people tend to search by model number and by then the 7805 will be remembered as having a wxga+ screen. So i guess you will have to do some marketing. :)

Spend the money get a slappa backpack. I've used it for my 6831 before and 7805u now. It's worth the money/protection/comfort.
    http://www.slappa.com/velocity-spyder-laptop-backpack?sc=2&category=133

I'm sure you can find it lower somewhere just make sure you get SKU: SL-LP-19B or SL-LP-19C

    EDIT:here are some reviews

Haven't found one I liked for a reasonable price yet honestly. I didn't like the backpack I had for my last one so I think I'm going back to a messenger/attache style case. Obviously this thing needs a large well constructed bag to hold its mass and protect it. If I was to get a backpack there's a pretty nice swissgear on newegg that I did consider though
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997047
the targus XL gets pretty good reviews too:

Yeah but people here are gonna wanna low ball you cuz its an old tech lappie probably, lol. Craigslist is actually one of the better prices to get a high market price without getting hassled too much. (as long as you don't get ripped off like I did...long story)

Yeah I like that swissgear a lot, the targus is popular because its roomy and well laid out. As for CL, all I can say is I'm fortunate I can afford the loss, as much as I dislike it and could use the money for credit card bills etc, my life isn't ruined for losing the money.

Yup basically the same thing with a different design, but google around you may find it 20 bucks cheaper else where or even more. Just make sure you get the SKU they have listed on their site. Reason is for example the 1st gen of Spyder had issue so thats why you see the different sku.

    I don't understand what's wrong with my 7805u.

I applied the exact same settings and my average fps comes out to be 8. Just "8." When I turn down every single option to lowest, I still get barely playable.

The ONLY difference is that I am using the official drivers rather than the DOX ones.....

    Ugh. I don't know.

Alright, I'll look around for it, thanks for the heads up.

You've asked that so many times.. I've answered everytime.. Try to change to the same exact drivers as us!

I'm getting 87xx with stock clocks and dox drivers.

550 bucks, hoping they catch the guy and get the laptop back...
Just ordered the Targus 17" XL Attache myself, nothingbutsoftware has it for 36.99 i think it was and the coupon review10 takes 10% off, 41.50 with "expedited" ground shipping wasn't bad.

Seems their price is the lowest I can find for the Slappa since its 119.99 everywhere else.
Question though, does the laptop fit with the battery on or just without it?

windows update notified me about updating the network card driver and mouse stuff but i havent seen any reason to do so.

Yup, The laptop fits into the back laptop holder pouch with the battery in. The top part of that pouch/sleeve has a velcro cover which you then use to lock down the laptop.

Hey everyone I was going to get this laptop but I didn't have the funds ready yet. I wont have the money for about another 3 weeks. Now that they are shipping with the correct monitor not the 1920x1200 and best buy jacked up the price I was wondering if it's still worth it. I also just found these on amazon:
    MSI GT725-074US 17-Inch Laptop
    WUXGA+ ACV(Amazing Crystal Vision) Display (1680*1050)
    (2.4Ghz Intel Penryn Core 2 Duo P8600,
    ATI R4850M 512MB DDR3,
4GB RAM, 320GB SATA HD, Super Multi Drive $1,349.99

    MSI GT725-075US 17-Inch Laptop
    17" WUXGA+ ACV(Amazing Crystal Vision) Display (1920*1080)
    (2.53Ghz Intel Penryn Core 2 Duo P9500,
    ATI R4850M 512MB DDR3,
    4GB RAM, 320GB SATA HD, BluRay $1,599.99

The P-7805u would cost me $1275 now with tax.

Those are pre-order on amazon right now. My computer is on it's last legs but I can get another 4 to 6 months out of it, maybe even a little longer. I can hold out not playing games for a while longer but I really want to play diablo 3 and starcraft 2 when they come out. Should I wait, get the msi, or jump on the gateway?
    Thx

The longer you wait probably the better specs you can get for the money, the 7805u will probably be back to 1049 once in a while, though the GT725 is pretty sweet, the lower spec one still has a better monitor and the graphics should definately be more powerful. I'd at least wait until you get the money to see whats out there, supposedly the GT725 will be released this month.

That totally sux man. I wish people could deal honestly but I guess tht is the way our society is. Myself I couldn't rip someone off let alone do it in a face to face.

I either hold on to my old equipment or it is passed down. My systems get only casual usage but are running 24/7 so after 18 months or so I'd feel like I was ripping someone off selling it knowing the actual time usage.

I use this Sound Blaster card in my P-7805u to use my 5.1 speakers. I got this card from www.Dell.com for $ 56.99 (on-sale) and Sound Blaster Cards sound way better than the standard cards built into the laptop.

    http://www.soundblaster.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=208&product=16642

You have to buy this optional cable if you want to use more than 2 speakers.

yea...be aware though that when you choose the size on the Matrix that it's an extra $18 for 17".

    But what's $18 when you're getting a $90 bag... :D

The Spyder is listed @ $109 (same price with the +$18 on the Matrix)...and says it fits 17"ers as well...

I asked the seller who is selling the 2 P-7805u's at $1,237.02 each and he replied that both were manufactured 11/17/08 and that one has the AUO LCD and the other has the LG. You could probably specify which one you'd prefer.

Does anyone else get a slight/relatively infrequent popping/crackling in their audio playback when doing things like using web browser, photoshop, etc.?

I had this same problem with a studio 17, but the problem was so bad with the dell that i had to send it back. it's merely a light annoyance with the 7805u.

Just an FYI. I was at the Attleboro Best Buy on Sunday, and they had one display model left. Of course the price is back up to $1149 though.. :(

I forgot to check which LCD it had, but doing a quick judgement call, it looked identical to mine (which has an LG panel).

I got my Intel 5300 Card from Amazon and then got this 3rd wire from eBay and just hid the cable around the card - Not perfect and still testing.

I also added a Bluetooth card for the other internal PCI slot next to the Wi-Fi card. I got this from Dell and included an install CD. I attached another one of those same cables from above on eBay and just hid the cable around the card. It works fine with a old Microsoft bluetooth mouse I have within about 6 feet or so. Newer Bluetooth stuff may work better.

Aren't those both full length Mini-PciE cards though? I thought the second slot was half mini only, at least looking at the standoffs in the pictures ive seen its a half mini slot? Also the ebay listing appears to be just u.fl hookup wires, not actual antennae? I had an old HP that I just installed a couple shorty antennas meant to mount on either side of the monitor into random spots in the case where there wasn't much stuff and there was some room and they worked fine, I'm not sure that those leaders are really doing you very much good as antennas.

PD, why would you want to return it if you're getting better than 2x the throughput with it? I'd be pretty happy with that kind of improvement. I get about 120-135mbps with the 5100 card in the 7805u and a Linksys WRT-310N router and I've been happy with that.

PD, let me know what your conection speeds are, I already returned my 530, but I may reorder it :)

Also, can you turn on your blue tooth with the F6 funtion key that Gateway uses for Blue Tooth?
