Would my T7500 fit into(both socket P), and be compatible with the x305? And if so..would that resolve this issue if it were to work? Just curious.

It might. Why not give it a shot? I thought you returned your X305 though.

However, if you looked at my earlier post, you'll see that the retailer wasn't sure either. He mentioned that it may work in some motherboards, so if it works with your X305, it by no means guarantees that it will work on the FX. But by all means, give it a shot. Basically, if it works, it strengthens the idea that the 7811FX will be compatible, but by no means guarantees it.

I would be curious to know what system the retailer tried the CPU in. Could you convince him to join the boards and post some pics/reviews of his attempt and results?

The high end motherboards include support for both types of set ups (but they have DDR2 and DDR3 slots and can run either pin version of socket P) But we all know that gateway isn't going to be running those mobo's in a 1500 dollar rig with its already very impressive stats. Though it would shock the bloody hell out of me if they did.

I'm going off of the assumption that gateway isn't going to be using a dual slot motherboard, and as i have said before i could be wrong about all of this, but i'd be willing to place bets that its a single set up motherboard.

I would still be really interested in some pics and info from the retailer though, because if i'm wrong i will gladly apologize to everyone for spreading misinformation...but i still dont think i'm wrong with this.

I don't think any of us are attempting to deliberately spread misinformation. We're just making assumptions off the information available. And there's information that points both ways, or at least can be interpreted in either manner.

Dook (aka Plinio) is downright hilarious.

I may have to buy a Gateway just to read the Dook posts on Gateway threads.

    Hey Syngensmyth,

Let me state I am nobodie's aka. I (Plinio) am as real as I am typing these words right now. Please quit the alias joke, because I don't feel like being assimilated by "The Dook". After all, resistance is NOT futile. :)

    Plinio,
Your English is so very good for a/an Uru-grarian.

How is the sound on the Gateway's? My Everex XT5000T, despite all it's quirky wonderfulness, has amazing sound for a laptop. I can't go back to crappy sound.

    Live long and prosper!

Thanks for the compliments! I use to mess it up sometimes though... just be patient and you'll see. Feel free to correct me anytime, I would really appreciate that.

By the way, it is "Uruguayan" (from Uruguay), and please don't think Uruguay is an insult... :D (as it was suggested in one regretfull -but indeed hilarious- old episode of The Simpsons) :)

About the sound of the 7811FX, I don't have purchased it yet (though I'm seriously planning to), but from what I've heard it is just "enough". Nothing like the Asus M70 series with their Altec Lansing 4 speaker + subwoofer incorporated sound.

    Plinio.

The speakers on the FX are average. Nothing spectacular like the Harmon Kardons on Toshibas or Altec Lansings on HPs/Asus.

I can't believe I read through this whole thing. Hilarious.

Now, does the p7811fx have a fingerprint reader? I saw someone said there isn't one beneath the touchpad. Does that mean there isn't one at all? Just curious.

Sure. I actually like that feature and wish my 6860 had it, but I guess its kinda cost prohibitive on such a low priced laptop.

I'll admit it: I don't even know what bluetooth is. I kind of get it, I just don't get why it's the bee's knees and I never bothered to look into it. Off to google I go :)

As for the fingerprint reader, I think it'd deter anyone in my household from using my laptop when I'm not home. Ah well, I suppose my dog will actually have to guard something now lol.

    I totally agree Dook,

Comparison (most important specs only) between P173-XL FX and P7811-FX:

    GATEWAY P173-XL FX
    T8300 2.4GHz 3MB 800MHz
    PM965
    4096 DDR2 667MHz
    nVidia Geforce 8800M GTS 512MB
    400GB 7200rpm SATA II (2x200GB)
    17" WUXGA (1920 x 1200)
    US$ 1.630 (TigerDirect.com)

    GATEWAY P7811-FX
    P8400 2.26GHz 3MB 1066MHz
    PM45
    4096 DDR3 1066MHz
    nVidia Geforce 9800M GTS 512MB
    200GB 7200rpm SATA II
    17" WUXGA (1920 x 1200)
    US$ 1.450 (BestBuy.com)

The dual HDD on the P173 can be easily matched with a few bucks by adding a second HDD to the P7811 (it has an extra empty HDD bay). Besides that, the P7811 is overall a better spec laptop and yet it is US$ 180 cheaper.

I also wish they used the same laptop "casing" of the P173 including the fingerprint reader, but I guess it's just a way to reduce costs and be more cost/specs competitive.

After all, I always leave the admin password empty, so it would be an absurdly giant change for me to switch from hitting enter at windows login to start using biometric user recognition just because I have the fancy gadget :D (although I would do it without hesitation...)

    Regards,

    Plinio.

Roger that. I'm actually just the opposite, I'm generally pretty protective over my laptop and the data within mainly due to work. Thus, I use a login and screensaver password. A fingerprint reader would make my life a bit easier, as I use pretty long passwords. I've got an old Microsoft (rebranded digital persona) lying around somewhere, but that would really only be helpful once I'm at my desk. Oh well, its no big problem, just one of those "wish i had" things. :)

i had an hp for few days that had a fingerprint reader, its a nice feature.
for people who tend to be protective (admin pass and screen saver login) it is a winner, i would install one in my car and on my house door if it wasn't expensive (not on the toilet though).
it has cool a sci fi feel and it actually works pretty well.

So did we ever establish if the P-7811FX has a FCPGA socket or an FCBGA socket? I might want to upgrade this laptop myself if i get it and I don't want to buy it if I can't put in a X9100, Q9100, QX9300, etc, at some point later on.

I imagine we'll just have to wait until one of you buys the laptop and can confirm what package it is.

Well, it was determined that FCBGA cpus are actually soldered to the board and generally only used in low end models, so I'd say, more than likely, its using FCPGA. You'll be able to upgrade.

Oh no! What if, going in the same cost reduction direction as the omission of the fingerprint reader they also decided to install FCBGA? It would really be a shame not being able to upgrade the CPU of such a nicely configured machine! Let's hope you are right and they used FCPGA. If someone knows for sure, please post!

    Plinio.

P.S. Intel's datasheet about PM45 chipset at section 1.1.11, Package:

    • 1329-ball FCBGA
    • Package Size: 34 mm x 34 mm
    • Ball pitch: 0.7 mm

No mention of FCPGA at all. Bad news?

Assuming the 7811FX is similar to the 68xx:
    1. What are typical idle/load temps?
    2. Does anyone under volt successfully?
    3. Can new Thermal paste be applied w/o voiding warranty?
    4. Anyone have a link to replacement internal fan?
    5. Is the CMOS battery easy to access?
    6. How is the CMOS cleared?

    2) Considering only 2 users have mentioned owning the 7811FX, neither have undervolted. 68XX has been undervolted successfully.
    3) Yes.
    4) Not that I know of.

    dtwn83 Thanks
The graphics card is running very cool, I like it.

No news is good news I suppose on CMOS clear but still there must be a way.

The reason I asked about fan is after warranty replacement part availability. Some laptops have weird/odd fan selections that cost mucho dinaro if you can find them at all.

Does Best Buy carry any parts for the models or do they insist on using Freak Squad?

Worrying about fixing it and don't even have one.

Well, considering the FX series has only been out since February, not that many complaints have come up about fans failing/failing fans.

Regarding your best buy question, does Best Buy ever carry parts for laptops models they have in store? (I don't know, I'm wondering).

    I think you're worrying a tad much. :D

Well, most of the parts on the site are usable for most brands of laptops. The only thing that seems specific would be the keyboard. The 6 cell battery is also used in (if I remember correctly) the M-series.

Well, in that case, go for the Pontiac the next time.

I keep going in circles as to whether I should jump on this laptop. I think the only thing holding me back is the warranty/service plan that you can get through best buy. Has anybody been given the run around after dropping the lappy off for repairs? Any "sorry, we can't do that" kind of stuff? Last minute surprises? Has your lappy disappeared for months when the repair was supposed to be done in 2 weeks? Is it worth 375$?

If nothing happens - not worh it. If motherboard melts - worth it. I never buy them except once on a Play Station that was known for having problems but we just had to buy it anyway. And yes it crapped out, no problem with replacement.

I personally plan on gambling on the motherboard not melting. Just one person's opinion.

    Hi ninjatorpedo,

I don't know for sure how their repair service is, but I will share my experience trying to phone call BestBuy/GeekSquad. Seeking for answers to this post discussion about the feasibility of upgrading the processor of the P7811-FX I decided to call these people to see if they could shed some light on this matter (very naive on my part indeed).

    This is what happened:

    1. Called BestBuy and a nice lady took my call. After a few minutes trying to make her understand what my question was about he finally decided to re-direct my call to the GeekSquad people (very wise).
    2. A second nice lady took the call. After another few minutes trying to explain what I needed to know he continued asking me if I had a virus problem with my laptop... Very upset I requested to speak with some technically knowledgeable person, PLEASE.
    3. The (supposedly) computer technician took the call. Please don't think I am a male chauvinist or something, but I must confess that when I heard the voice of another nice lady on the other side it didn't sound very promising to me. After some more minutes trying to explain what was all about, this person nicely suggested me to call BestBuy people (which would have made me live forever at the phone in an eternal unbreakable infernal circle). Thank you and goodbye.
    4. I decided to directly call to one of the BestBuy stores to avoid their useless call centers. Picked one in the New York area and called. A nice female voice answering machine took the call offering a menu of options (... 3 to call to a BestBuy sales associate, 4 to speak with GeekSquad...). Dialed option 3: "the number is not available". Dialed option 4: Ring, Ring .. (10 x) ... Ring...

I repeat, I don't know for sure how good or bad their repair service is, but let me tell you I spent near US$ 10 (international phone call rates) and 35 minutes of my life for a sad demonstration of total incompetence and lack of service.

I hope my experience helps others.

    Best regards,

    Plinio.

I pretty much expect 9 out 10 phone calls to any computer company regarding any minutely complicated issue other than "it is broken. i need a new one", to end in complete frustration. I'm talking about what happens when you walk up to that counter and hand off your 1500 purchase to the guy in the blue shirt at the best buy counter for problems with component X. Run around? Hassle? Unbelievable expediency? Good, negative, neutral experience?
