So, is the concensus that the pulsing fan is 'normal' for the 7811?

I am not talking about the high speed 1 second burst it does every now and then. What mine does is run at very low speed, then pulse to just a slightly higher RPM and it does this off and on and is very annoying.

    Thanks!

it's normal for it to do it for only about 10 seconds max. mine only does it on startup for 10 seconds right when the desktop loads, and rarely does it even do this.

it's a bios thing most likely, and hopefully a bios upgrade will "fix" it. I personally think it was designed to do that, but you're right, it IS annoying, at least it only lasts for about 10 seconds though.

From my experience, it's the fan that cools the GPU. I think it's a good thing though seeing as it keeps my GPU around 45C when idle. The CPU fan on the other hand tends to run constantly and doesn't really spin down or speed up when utilizing the CPU or leaving it at idle.

In all fairness, I prefer fan noise than having to deal with sweaty hands due to the heat rising off of the keyboard/wrist pad.

Yes the one on the left is GPU and does the high speed burst and is the one that pulsates.

Same thing happens on my system. The left fan spins up about every other minute for a second or two depending on what I'm doing. I rarely hear the right fan come on, and when it does it's quiet and runs for a minute or so before shutting off again. Both fans are consistently on during gaming, depending on the game. It's a weird quirk my XPS laptop never did, but nothing is broken or malfunctioning so it's really not bad in my opinion.

Actually the "pulsating" is caused by the fact that the GPU temp constantly keeps rising and when it reaches over 45 degrees, the fan kicks in, lowers the temp around 40 C and shuts down the fan. And after the fan is shut down the temp keeps rising again to 45+ C...and you get the thrill.

I'm guessing this is because of the same heat sink with CPUs causing the GPU to get some collateral heat and heating up.

Good solution seems to be installing a notebook cooler (I have zalman NC-2000) which will lower the overall computer idle temps just enought to keep the GPU temps lower than 45 C. And undervolting is also a good bet, since this will lower the CPU temps at higher load.
