I think I am going to take the same plunge...obsessive compulsive ftw? :)

If this next unit gives me issues, I think I might have to pass this P-7811FX up...hard to enjoy such a great machine when little stuff like that still bothers you.

Curious to know how your new machine turned out.

Getting the same problem, when looking from a left angle. Strange problem, need to go get it exchanged and pick up the 200 dollar difference this weekend.

Just so you guys know I bought the Highest End Gatyeway you could buy about a month ago, the Gateway P-173XL FX. It came with the 1920 X 1200 super nice HD screen.

Well I have a similar problem as well. I have a white bar about an inch high going across the bottom of my screen that you can only really see when the monitor is displaying a mostly black.

Man I think gateway really went cheapo on their laptops. I was hoping it wasn't true but it looks like Gateway is just a shady company. My sister had a really big problem with a gateway desktop she bought from bestbuy. The desktop died after 3-4 months and she didn't buy the warrany. Well I flew out to Colorado to take a look at it and have a little vacation. Guess what? Gateway sold my Sister a supposedly "New" Gateway desktop with a 3 year old refurbished HD in it and really bad cooling in the case and there was nothing we could do because it was beyond 90 days. Shady....

I exchanged the 7811FX and the new one had the same problem but I was able to better push the bubble out of the right side of the screen. It seems to be gone now.

However, I have a new problem. The eSATA connector on the side of the notebook doesn't seem to be functioning. I used the one on my last 7811 to get an Acronis True Image drive image of my old drive so I could restore it on the new 7811. But, True Image doesn't see the SATA drive on the new 7811. True Image had no problem seeing it on the old 7811 on SATA. If I try to use USB it tells me that it will take 4 days - must be using USB 1 and not USB 2.0. I'm thinking I may go exchange this one now.

Wow man, you have problems! Go troll some other forum. I was telling a true story and stating my opinion.

I have an idea. Why don't you post when you actually have something useful to say... huh Dook? Or would that take too much brain power?

    ^ Not funny anymore.

    @John
You should get a replacement. There is absolutely no need for a finished product to require you to push some defect out. Replace immediately.

John, I got mine replaced today also.

So far so good for those keeping tabs on this thread. There is no air/ghosting on this unit what so ever...unless you count the stuff I found while playing "wheres waldo" with my screen while looking for it on an extreme angle.

As I expected, the light halo is there on the bottom. Typical of many LCD.

Just in case people are getting the wrong idea about this screen....this is NOT a cheap screen, the picture is great....awesome even. It just seems to suffer from a minor "defects".

Now I gotta stress test this bish all over again, oh well.

unfortunately...all my external hd solutions are a bit dated, they run off of firewire and USB 2.0, no way to test the ESATA port.

You talk about it as if I care. -.- Remember that I'm not posting 1100+ posts a month like you do and reputation doesn't matter to me at all unlike you.

Now, stop spamming the thread with personal attacks towards anyone who doesn't like your crude sense of humor.

LOL. Apparently you DO care seeing as how you took the time to think up and type such a witty a response. Seems to me that if a person truly didn't care, they would simply ignore whatever it is they supposedly don't care about and go on with their lives. You on the other hand, are all up in my post count, Rep and God knows what else, which is borderline sad.

PS-If you don't like my responses(aka-personal attacks), then perhaps you should cease making snide comments(aka personal attacks). The old proverb rings true here..."Don't start nothin, won't be nothin'".

This being said, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Appreciate the backing, nars! As always you the man! And you said it well. We all joke. Joke being the operative word. Most of us have fun here, but some people just get too uptight. That being said, when it's time to be serious and help others, we do that too. It's a delicate balance. Kind of like Syns dogs menstrual cycle.

Indeed it is. Although I think I may be a bit insane as well. Anyone who finds humor in some of the stuff I do, has GOT to be borderline certifiable. :D

PS- If some were offended by my current avatar, I'd hate to see the reaction to the one I almost put up. Ultimately I decided against it, as I would prefer to not be banned. And some say I have no heart! :D

I am thinking seriously of making that thread...my second machine has the lockup issue.

Still pondering the idea of going to round 3... Probably better to just look into other options. The price on this thing is just too good... I cannot bring myself to pay the boutique cost for a machine of this caliber. At least not when I know a deal like this exists.

Buying one of these things is like getting one of those lil scratch off lotto ticket type things.

A persistent man. I like this. You'll eventually get a working one and it'll be more that worth the trouble. The 7811 is a great machine and will be even moreso once GW gets all the bugs worked out.

This...may be the one. I did not complete all my tests....but I did put it through all my video game tests. It lasted a good 30 minutes or more stressed to the max and temperatures were consistent.

The fan sounds a lot more healthy in this one...and the screen is the best screen Ive seen yet...even the light Halo is barely noticeable.

This may be the one. ;)

If anyone has the game stranglehold maybe they could install it on there 7811 and let me know if it crashes there machine .On my 6860 it seems the games that crash the machine ie black screen requiring a reboot are all Unreal Engine games but this is when i overclock the machine otherwise it does not . The crashing on the 7811 sounds similar to mine except i guess your screen stays on when it crashes but the soundlooping error sounds the same . Im really wondering if its just the high clocks making these machines crash which will suck cause thats the whole point of the new card is the higher clocks and im getting rid of my 6860 this week to a close friend and maybe grabbing one of these but if its going to give me the same headaches i had when Overclocking im not so sure i will.

What I think...I think that notebook is a very sensitive piece of electronics, especially ones that run as hot as these. When you deal with mass produced garbage...you will see defects. But I do not question the design itself...so I assume once you get a working one, it will hopefully work.

And tbh...short of some monster custom rig, I really do not expect a notebook to have much overclocking ability. Feels like too risky of a venture unless you have a nice cooler.

These machines dont run hot at all actually and if you saw what some of the 15 inch notebooks with 8800gtx's temps are you would have a heart attack . there temps on the CPU in the 70s and GPUs in the high 80s to 90s and stable . People do and always have overclocked laptops and will even more so if the temps are so low by default cause it gives you alot of headroom and still be within safe limits. if you have a moment and go look in the sager forums and dell forums and see some of the insane clocks these guys run at and how much they pay for there machines i think youll be surprised .

should i return my 7811? i got it today, but it has flickering problems.Sometimes screen just flickers, sometimes it goes off for few secs, and when it comes back i am already in login screen. It says i am locked, so i have to login back by pressing on my user account button. Also sometimes screen goes off and never comes back so i have to shut it down by holding power button. i even did fresh windows reinstall but it did not help. Is anyone having same problem? And i noticed that flickering/screen going off problem mostly occurs when i am typing. like right now, flickering happened, just this time i wasnt toasted to login screen. sooooo strange. what you guys think?

thanks in advance for any help :)

    zarraza,

That is the worst problem I've heard of. I'd exchange immediately. I could live with some ghosting on the screen but definitely not what you've described. I'm on my 3rd 7811 and I think I finally have a keeper. I still have a bit of ghosting on the screen but it is much better than the first two. As long as I don't get lockups (didn't on the first two) I will be keeping this one.

Does anyone know how to get 3DMark Vantage to loop? I bought it today hoping to run a stress test for a couple of days to test the new 7811's stability but their doesn't seem to be a loop setting.

is it possible that flickering is caused by overheating? i turned on my 7811 few hours ago, and still havent get flickering problems. i'll keep it on for lil bit longer n see if later on flickering problem occurs. also i wasnt gettin the train's choo choo sound, for last few hours, but now i can hear it. if i'll start gettin flick probz it means its caused because of over heating... riight?
and what you guys mean lockups? like how does it look? computer totally freezes or what?
and john566, ill wait for few more days n see if problems occur, cuz right now its working perfect.

Good luck zarraza. Please keep us updated. I would definitely get it replaced before your 14 days because that sounds like an unusual intermittent problem that could crop back up 3 weeks from now and then you'd have to send it in to Gateway for repair. And we all know how fun intermittent problems are to get repaired under warrantee.

i have another reason to turn it in... i think i have overheating. after playing cod4 for 20 mins, fps dropped from 100-200, to 10-60 and heat jumped from 60-70 celcius to 100-105. Graphics only 1024x768 4xAA.

Thats normal for one run of 3dmark to vary from one to the next so dont sweat it . if it were dropping thousands of points between runs it would be an issue but not 39 points. ;)

p.s. do i have to pack everything nicely? i mean i ripped like batterie's package and etc, but everything else is fine.
