I am, but I am going to have to go back to Vista as with the 7805u, official 186.03 drivers and 7 I can't disable my laptop display and just use my 1080p 42". I was able to do so in Vista. If I try now, it does it but the TV shows nothing, so I have no TV or laptop display. If I try to extend using the TV as primary, no matter what I do I can't shut the lid all the way or the dmn TV shuts off. And of course cloning is out of the question as it breaks HDCP.

    @ blazeddc
which games specifically i might be able to help. i also have a few old games and have been able to get them all to run even final fantasy 7. the only game i have not been able to get to run under windows 7 is beyond good and evil because of stupid copy protection (i bet the steam version would run fine) hell i even got die by the sword to work ad that game is a dinosaur lol

    @tului
use driver version 190.15 (i think you can get it at laptopvideo2go.com) i use this driver and every single thing from closing the lid to custom resolutions and dual screen modes work fantastic. i always use my lg tv instead of the laptop display and i never have issues with it even resuming from standby works fine.

I really wanna try Windows 7 on my 7811 FX, but I'm worried about driver issues.

I'm mainly concerned about the card reader, the volume slider and the media bar, as well as any other fn hotkeys. Do those work without a problem in Windows 7?

Whelp, Win7 has finally hit me where it hurts. Street fighter 4 runs perfectly on my 6860fx while using windows xp, but I have to turn all the settings to low to get it to run on windows 7.

Did you install the graphic drivers? I'll try running it on my 6831FX and see how it runs. I haven't had any problems with games so far yet though.

I have Vista on my new Gateway netbook, so will upgrade sooner or later. But my older Compaq laptop is running XP Pro: What does it take to upgrade that to 7?

    thanks

I believe it needs some updating. I haven't really tried it yet, but my P-6831FX seemed to run at least an hour playing Oblivion on battery, so it doesn't seem that much worse. It may be worse on netbooks, but I'm sure a patch eventually will fix that.

ok im gonna asnwer as many as i can here goes :D

@narukari for street fighter ill edit my answer into this post as soon as it finishes installing.

@mew1838 yes you can but only if the game you want to play doesnt require registry keys or refuses to run because of copy protection. (example is steam it works fine when you run the steam exe from the folder)

@dawnseclips sry i have no idea how long that discount is for
but daemon tools does work fine on windows 7 i use it all the time. you must have improperly installed it which i dont blame you for because you do have to follow a certain method to do it but once you get it wrong the first time (although its not hard to fix) it can be a little tricky to get it to work right

@redsoxguy whoever said that is full of bologna. my 7805u runs for 1hr 45mins in the performance settings and 1 hr 25-30mins with wifi on performance settings (both are with screen brightness at a somewhat high level not max though). either their battery is faulty or was improperly charged when purchased for maximum life. i actually find it to be the other way around because i find windows 7 uses my hdds less then vista does. just configure it right and youll have no problems. another way to save some time is when you have lots of usb devices you need to use a powered hub if possible.

It says incompatibility when you install... but it works. The download site lists Win7 as compatible as well. Just make sure you download the newest one. I haven't had any problems yet.

the reason why it keeps rebooting is because you didnt follow the order (they dont tell yah either since win 7 isnt officially supported) on how to install it. the easiest thing to do at this point would be to find the sptd (i think the latest version as of now is 1.59) install the as a standalone package before you install daemon tools. since you already have tried to install daemon tools hopefully just installing the sptd will get it to work but if not you have to remove daemon tools failed sptd install completely. a simple uninstall usually wont work and it might require you to erase some registry keys which to make matters worse a protected by the os. there is a step by step up on the net somewhere i dont remember where but just google how to remove sptd completely.

the reason why daemon tools is doing the restart thing is because its trying to install the sptd and it thinks it succeeds (it does install but...) the os cant recognize that it is installed when it reboots so it assumes it was never there and trys to install again repeating this cycle until sptd is installed properly

if you cant get it to work by using the info ive provided then ill try and help yah. you can fix it though as i ran into the same exact thing and fixed it myself after alot of trial and error. i personally had to erase all the registry keys for sptd that i could but a different time just running the sptd install as admin worked fine.

NOTE: when you run the sptd installer turn any firewalls antivirus etc off an run it as administrator.

EDIT: to save you a little time heres a link to the standalone package of the sptd (i was right the latest was 1.59 :D)

Use proper drivers. I am running SF4 almost everything on max settings and get avg FPS around 60. I use Dox 181.20 drivers. And every game i play i have amazing framerate with win 7. I have tried the newer drivers as well, and none of them has had that good performance.

its funny how whenever anyone tries to get daemon tools to work someone always has to bring up clone drive from slysoft. i dunno why but i guess everyone that brings it up doesnt realize that there are many programs that use sptd and daemontools being only one of them. also for me virtual clone drive is inferior as it runs mega slow and cannot mount several types of images i get from work and other places.

i think it would be in your best interests to get sptd up and running properly even if you take the easy way out and get that clone program.

Windows 7 RC is so annoying...it hasn't been my only problem. (This happens doing various things in photoshop cs4..)

Has anyone had this problem? I don't know what to do. (I do have the latest nvidia drivers too)

do u have the nvidia win 7 drivers or vista ones, cause they both work i think.
anyway, i have good old vista sp2 installed and aside from a few quirks, its worked fine.
i tried out the beta of win 7 for a few minutes and obviously something new looks nice and it was snappier, but a friend of mine who had win 7 said it was kinda boring and after a while he went back to vista. i guess he meant the overall look and user interface.

Yes Windows 7 is boring. Boring not looking for better drivers, boring not constantly looking for the better tweak, Boring not trying to find the memory leak constantly expanding the memory footprint, boring from being too stable, boring form not having to reboot all the time, and boring for many other reasons. Come to think of it I seem to like being bored as of late..... :)

hehe, well after using quite a few Linux distro's over the last 2 years, I now have only Win7 installed... "boring" is good because it means that it is doing everything I want and it's not in my face about it :D

@Zakattack: I use CS4 and no, I haven't gotten that at all, using the same drivers as you. I'm using RC x64 as well. Ummm... I know that sometimes Photoshop can cause problems if you have something set in your Nvidia Control Panel differently than default. AF and AA doesn't really make a difference, but some of the other settings can cause PS to freak out and have problems like that. I can't remember which setting, but there is one that at one time was actually not allowing PS to open for me.

Oh thanks, I will reset to default, although I don't think I changed anything really..and meatwad I am using the newest w7 nvidia drivers.

Edit: It is still happening :(-I am thinking of using drive sweeper and then reinstalling...could it be I am using the 64bit version of CS4?

Edit 2: That is odd..now that I am using the regular version of CS4 nothing is happening...

Wow, I forgot there was a 64-bit version because my Vista HP install was 32-bit (only 3 gigs of ram). But I just opened the 64-bit version of Photoshop without problem. Maybe I'll try using it a bit tomorrow to test compatibility.

Dunno what everyone is talking about here, that Daemon tools is not working.
Download the latest version from official site. And before installing it, open the downloaded file properties, and chnage the compatibility to Vista SP1 or SP2. And then run the .exe. It installs fine, and works fine. I have Win 7 official beta (64-bit).

I didn't even set it to compatibility mode.... when I open it to install I get the "this program is not compatible" box, and when I run it for the first time I get the same box.... but it has been working without issue.

Vista 64 has been nothing but stellar for me. I'll upgrade when I see 15+fps improvement in games across the board or software I can't run in vista since my laptop does everything. Can anyone show me benchmark increases this big or are we talking 1-3 fps?

Well for one, when installing Windows 7 you lose all your registry settings which means you have to re-install all your applications and games. And for me that is too much of a hassle since I have at least 25+ games installed and 30+ applications installed as well. I will install Windows 7 when the easy transfer manager is optimized to transfer registry settings as well, if it ever happens.

It's a bit of a pain to reinstall your main OS, but in the end I think it's worth it, you have a clean Windows installation and you only need to install the programs/games you need when you need them. So no longer do I need to have 20+ games installed taking up HDD space when I only play maybe 3 at a time at the most...

Does a backup cover the whole system or just certain things, i also don't know how to back up either

A back up doesn't have to be anything more than finding the files you want to save and putting them somewhere else... burning a DVD or copying them to a different/external hard drive.

Just make sure you have all the files you want to keep, then reinstall. Simple really, just don't do it until you are sure you have everything you want.

Hello. I just installed Windows 7 on my 6860fx and I have a small problem. The buttons for media center, dvd, forward, stop etc don't work. Does anyone have the driver to make them working again? Also, can anyone upload the wallpapers by Gateway (the ones with FX and Gateway logos) that came preinstall with this laptop?

Wow, that's exactly what my 6860 is like on XP. It just runs everything I do, from apps to web servers to heavy games, and keeps on going for months between reboots. Although I did have to switch away from Nvidia's latest drivers back to XFastest's 180.70 to resolve an issue with a certain game, that's about it for the tweaks.

This is actually bad in a way because I have no reason to preorder W7 for 50% off lol. So if I decide to go with it in a couple of years, I'll be paying 50 extra dollars.

Maybe I should preorder W7 and sell my XP Pro. I'll probably make money on that deal right now lol.

Do the buttons above the keyboard work for you? Can you upload the driver for them please?

The buttons work for me, I didn't install any drivers for them. Fortunately though a lot of drivers from Vista work with Win7, so if Gateway has drivers for those for Vista give them a try.

Are the buttons illuminated? Try pressing FN+F1 if they aren't, but they should still work regardless if they are illuminated or not.

Mine work fine but I did an "Inplace Upgrade". All my software and settings ported over. I only had to de-install Perfect Disk 10 and then install it back afterwards.

I should note too that I no longer feel the "NEED" to run gadgets to constantly monitor my system. I it soooooo much more stable...............

I don't know about a fresh install but with an Inplace Upgrade everything seems to work here.............
