Got my T9300 installed and running great (heatsink screws 1-4 are real pricks I gotta say, gave me a good scare for a bit).

    Quick impressions:

Half-Life 2 Lost Coast video stress test @ 1440x900, max settings, 4x msaa, 16x af, vsync off
    T5550 - 61 fps
    T9300 - 101 fps

CS:Source @ 1440x900, all settings maxed, vsync on.
With the T5550 could only have 15 bots on de_dust and have good framerate, now the T9300 can handle 23 bots without problem.

Crysis still runs like *** on high or very high. Much more gpu-bound than the Source engine. Crytek sucks at optimization.

UT3 Deck botmatch feels smoother overall. Running @ 1440x900, max settings, vsync on. Feels like about 30+ fps most of the time. Gorgeous game, love the gore.

CPU temps are also lower, even under load. Highest I saw so far is 54 degrees after a play session in UT3.

    Overall, I am well-satisfied. Bring on Left4dead, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3. :)

What is the cheapest place to buy a 8300 or a 9300?

fleabay. I'd say 90% of the people with upgraded CPUs got theirs from ebay.

Right now, hwmonitor is showing my cpu temps as:

    core 0 - 40 degrees c
    core 1 - 31 degrees c

Why is there such a discrepancy? I don't recall temps on the old T5550 having such a gap between the cores. This is madness! Boy I hope I applied the thermal compound correctly... the T5550 was smothered in a whole gob of crud. I followed your guys' advice and put just a dab on the glassy rectangle part. It must be okay though, since I'm getting lower temps than with the old T5550. Right?

I got my 8300 from newegg..My friend bought a 9300 and put it in his lappy and now wishes he would have spent the extra 80 somewhere else...There really is very minimal difference between the two for your average pc user and gamer...but if you are into CAD and whatnot..different story..

its something to do with where the thermal sensors are placed, as long as you max temps are a bit closer, i would not worry about it.

well i bought my whole machine for 800

seems stupid to upgrade the cpu for 200$

Im looking for the 8300 at 150 or less really.

or the 9300 too i suppose.

quite the opposite, since you saved already 450$ you can afford a 250$ cpu and still be 200$ on top. that how i would look at it

you know T8300 and T9300 aren't the only option, you can probably get one of the T7000 series fairly cheaply

I hear you..I got my machine new from a friend for 850 dollars. I was thinking how you were...and then I just realized I wanted a better cpu...and it seriously was worth every single penny...if you buy from newegg you get the warranty and DOA coverage...I really couldnt be happier with this machine now...I love it.
