I'm also looking for a good notebook-carrying backpack:
http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=397894&iid=08-16-08_HomePage|MainBanner|BTCollege
Same thing @ Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/WENGER-Swissgear-Backpack-Notebook-Red/dp/B000VB7EFW
If that's true I'd be getting a $150 list price back pack for only $40.
Unfortunately, I could only find two reviews, and they're the two costumer reviews on Amazon.com.
And even more unfortunately is neither of them had 17" laptops.
My alternate is this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8850576&type=product&id=1209165869136
But it's nearly twice as much.

Although I did find a pretty sweet deal for it here: http://www.ritzcamera.com/product/EP4527915.htm?utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=ShopZilla -
So i was at bestbuy tonight and the sales rep told my parents that since the laptop was 64-bit, it may not work on my college's wireless network since it doesn't work on another nearby university's because of the 64-bit os. I told them I would just reformat it and put on 32-bit vista and they started *****ing that i wasn't going to touch it blahblahblahblahbh because i'd 'void the warranty'. I was wondering if what he was saying had any truth, because i haven't heard anything like it before. Could anyone shed some light?
-
as for voiding the warranty...reformatting the computer to put 32 bit vista on it, should NOT void the warranty. -
That's what I thought, but the guy at bestbuy said something about their routers not being 64-bit compatible. ***? as far as i know you don't need drivers for a specific router to connect to it, so i had no clue where he was getting that from.
either way my parents are up in arms and we got into an arguement. im just going to let my mom call my school and ask them because that's all shes *****ing about.
thanks diablo. -
The problem lies if their network uses a domain based network. Vista Home Prem doesnt allow for domain login-ins. There may be ways around this, however. I have never checked.
And NEVER listen to what Best Buy tells you. Sure they get it right every once in a while, but even a broken clock is right twice a day. -

Dook! these freaking threads are killing me man!!!!! glad to see this one that I created is still around!
I am loving this laptop more and more!!!
and yes bestbuy clowns = idiots -

Hey guys. I think you are talking about so silly things, like 3 pages about the screws and screw size and this an that. worst case with the screws>you go to the hardwarestore with your new harddrive and ask for screws that will fit, for example, and that's it!
Ontopic: what's new about the RAID. is it 100% the 7811fx doesn't have it? And about the heat, how is that doin???what about battery life??(i know these issues might have come up, but posts were made right after purchase, now ppl can put a more objective opinion in here)and screen and viewangles??? thanks! -
Thank you for your opinion. On behalf of the other members of this thread, please accept our sincere apology for talking about such silly things. We apologize for wasting your time discussing menial topics such as screws and "this and that". What we should be discussing are the things you and only you find relevant. We will do our best to cater to you personally from now on and answer your recurring but ever so important screen questions.
-
please... dont be so know it all bcause u clearly are not... just read and dont get so mad about things... i tottally agree that this thread is completelly deviated... noone is talking about benchamarks, pics, opinions nothing... since page 3 this thread has gone talking about one simple topic : RAID, and has gone from does this have raid to what kind of screws will be good for me... imo thats not a owner lounge talk... if u want to know that stuff open a new thread called hdd in 7811.... check out the dv5 lounge... they post benchs, pics, opinion, heat etc etc... not screws -_- -
Also, just as a helpful suggestion, next time you feel it necessary to attempt to flame someone, I have a few suggestions that may help get your point across with greater success.
1.) Use proper grammar along with the much needed spell-check. Firefox even has it built in for greater ease.
2.) Take the time to actually investigate your claims. In other words actually KNOW what you're talking about. Feel free to check my posting history and see just how many times I've called someone dumb, or have been other than helpful to those who sincerely needed it and weren't just trying to get people to do all the work for them. Sure I go off topic on occasion, we all do. But when it comes down to it, I am more than willing to help anyone who needs it.
And again, thank you for your insightful opinion and comments and hope you have a pleasant day. -
edit: btw.. if anyone feels that the screws are not that interesting like capra, search the "7811 unboxing pics" it seems to be a lot more helpful than this thead
-
Then don't read them, move along and have a nice day.
If you have anything else to add, feel free to PM me. We don't want the thread deviating any more that it has already, right? -
lol
dook ftw -
-.- Are you guys seriously arguing in a thread about a notebook out of all place?! Grow up...
-
I've got my 7811FX ready for in-store pickup now, so I'm pretty excited. Unfortunately, the wireless networker thing I was looking at wasn't availible-which doesn't neccessarily mean it's not in the store, just that they don't have enough of them to allow for in-store pickup or something like that.
-
Which one were you looking to get? I'm assuming you're talking about the wireless router, correct?
-
The $39.99 is cheaper and has gotten some good cusomer reviews, plus the one "bad" review I think mentioned it could be better with some firmware upgrades, which have probably happened by now.
The D-Link DIR-615 -
The 615 is a decent router especially for the price. It should do you well.
-
The salesperson also told me it was better.
I think the sales people at my Best Buy are a bit more exceptional because I live in a college town (Go Iowa State!), so there are actually students, perhaps even technology majors, who work there and are more knowledgeable than your average BB sales person. Also, the obvious fact is that they're younger and are more likely to have actually grown up with the technology they're selling.
Anyway, I'll be posting about the unboxing, hard drive installation, test drive, etc.
And I might run a Crysis benchmark since I just bought the game. -
Hey DOOK, i don't remeber saying anything about you espacially, but I'm glad even you noticed about YOURSELF that you are talking about,,silly things''a lot, at least in this tread! Anyways, I read all the posts 'cause i'm not a fortuneteller or anything like that to know before i read any posts what someone has actually written in them(just ,,silly things'' or something usefull) , although in youre case i'm kinda begiinning to foresee it, if you catch my drift. sorry for any grammar mistakes, but i speak 5 languages and sometimes i might let a little mistake slip my mind.
On: i was asking about heat and stuff cause a roomaate of mine has a gateway(dunno what model)but it gets extremely hot, wich it probably shouldn't. since it started happenenig he even stopped playing games(he bought his laptop from tha states also, and me living in ROMANIA and all, i guess i can kiss any waranty goodbye). another friend bought a packard bell here in ROmania, and i used to play DOTA(warcraft II mod)on it, and after some time it began heating up too(lame video card, whereas in the gateway there was a 7800). so that's where my worries about the heat come. RAID would have been convenient i guess(probably just psichologically, since i don't know when i'll scrap up the cash for a second hard drive but i could have bragged about it beeing in the rig, but that's about it)
Screen and viewing angles seem to be fine(searched a bit on youtube, but only earlier models, guess screen will be even better)
Also, if you guys could tell me what comes with the box. I mean if there is any HDMI cable included or smth like that...smth to wipe of the screen from time to time, cd with fresh install of vista, cd with drivers -
-
Now I'm back to the issue of the screws. I've just figured out how to do it but now I'm stuck 'cause the bloody thing came with NO SCREWS. I've changed my mind, the salesperson was an idiot 'cause he told me it should come with everything I need, and it DIDN'T! Didn't even come with a friggin' manual either-just the hard drive itself and a few little beads. Since neither of my parents will be home until latter today I'll have to find a hardware store within walking distance.
The other issue is I can't seem to be able to break into the main hard drive to check out its screws. -
Okay, I went to Ace Hardware and got some 6-32 x 1/2" screws, but I think I might actually need 1/4" length, but this was the shortest they seemed to have...
Amazon.com seems to have them in 1/4", it's pretty cheap so maybe I could afford to add some overnight shipping maybe...I don't know, I'm just so pissed off at this whole situation right now.
Edit: Well screw the screws it looks like I can get it in the thing pretty securely with just the cradle. Still I need to figure out where the hell I put the screw drivers so I can put the screws for the cover plate back in... -
Eh... you won't from being worried about having only two screws to not having any screws at all? I would just pop two from the stock drive cradle and put 'em in the second one, just to be safe.
-
-
You're just not pushing hard enough. Place your fingers flat on stock drive and push, that's all there is to it. Mine was in there tight too.
-
hmmm this notebook looks amazing, but I am going to uni would this 17 inch suit me? or should I go with a 15 inch?

I watch "my peers" do all these things with their laptop in class....

Hi everyone! I am very interested in buying one of these laptops (P-7811 FX), but I have a few questions for those of you that own one.
I will mainly be using this laptop for editing photos in Photoshop, so my questions are:
1. What are the viewing angles like? This is very important, because like most laptops if you view them from a different angle the colour changes, and this is bad when it comes to photo editing, because you might think you are editing a photo correctly, but when you look at the monitor from the correct angle you notice that you have actually messed it up.
2. About how long will the battery last if you are just editing photos in Photoshop?
3. I have heard that some laptops monitors dim when they are running off the battery so that they save power, it this the case with this laptop?
4. What ms response time does this laptop have?
5. What is the gloss monitor like? If you have a light source behind you, does it reflect badly?
6. Do you think this laptop is too heavy to carry around with you and that the weight will become annoying after a while? (See below)
I will hopefully be using this laptop for some gaming as well, but I'm going to be working on a cruise liner as a photographer as of the end of next month, so I don't know if I will even get time, or if I'll even want to play games, because I'll be too busy working.
P.S. I know this is a gaming laptop, but it is well priced for what you get and I don't think I would be able to find a cheaper one that's as good as this.
I will only be able to buy this laptop near the end of next month when I arrive in Miami, so there might even be a better and cheaper laptop out by then, but I kind of doubt it.
Thanks in advance to anyone that replies! -
I wonder if it's got something to do with the fact that I installed the hard drive BEFORE I started the computer...am I just screwed now?
Well, at least the network's working great. I have thus far noticed no noteable decrease in internet speed. -
That makes no sense, I think you're only seeing the partitions of the stock drive and not seeing the second drive at all. Go to control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management -> disk management (on the left under storage) and tell us what you see.

2. I'm not sure it would depend on what effects your using and how much you're rendering at any given time. a DVD run down test for me was 1:48minutes.
3. You can set it in "power options" to be just as bright on battery as it is on AC.
4. MS response time? I dunno someone else can field that one but it's speedy.
5. all glossy monitors do. but the glossy gives you the great colors so if you want good color you're stuck wit gloss
6. It's not too bad to carry around no.. Considering you'll be lugging around the camera and then going to upload somewhere it wouldn't be a big deal. If however you were going to be packing this along with your tripod, lenses, film, lights, etc. well an extra 10lbs might not be much, or it might mean the whole world it's up to you to decide. -
Thanks directeuphorium for the quick reply.
I got all the answers that I was hoping to get, well except for number 4.
So if anyone knows what the ms response time is, please let me know.
If anyone has anything else to add, please do.
Thanks again -
It also has Razer on it (my gaming mouse), and some unnamed thing that says "Healthy (EISA Configuration).
I'm also trying to download the software for Zune. My Zune didn't come with an installation disc-at least none I could see, anyway-might dig around the box to see if there's like a small one or something. -
So do you see your second hard drive under Disk Management?
-
hi! i bougth this computer and imported it to argentina, where i live..
the notebook is excellent the only problem is the gpu fan (i think) which keeps turning on an off constantly. Is this a serious problem? how do i fix it without returning the laptop (physically impossible)
thanks and sorry for my english. -
It also has Razer on it (my gaming mouse) (Oh, that's probably the CD/DVD-ROM), and some unnamed thing that says "Healthy (EISA Configuration)".
I also see
Disc 0-Basic: 186.31 GB - Online
Disc 1-Unknown: 298.09 GB - Not Initialized
So how do I initialize it?
Oh, right click->initiliaze disc looks promising!
Okay, it's all set up now! Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
Now...
I'm also trying to download the software for Zune. My Zune didn't come with an installation disc-at least none I could see, anyway-might dig around the box to see if there's like a small one or something. -
Right click on Disc 1-Unknown, there should be something that says Initialize.
-
thats not a problem... it seems to be happening on all units...
-
aes, just out of curiosity, which Gateway model do you own?
-
??
-
I think this coulld be some sort of network issue, but nothing will download for me...
Ah, well now that I started running the "64-bit" version of IE it seems to work fine...
Well never mind then. Liking the desktop so far, got it up on my TV screen so that's cool. I'm downloading my Steam stuff right now, and I'm unpacking some of the other stuff I got.
The cooling fan doesn't seem like much of an issue right now (although maybe the sound of the actual fan in my room is overpowering it. The keyboard does feel a bit toasty. Is it alright to have sitting on a solid surface? Is the side vent enough to ventilate the system? I'm gonna try out the media slots soon to see if I can get the pictures I took on the computer. -
You can keep it on a solid surface while just browsing the web ,installing stuff etc. Once you start gaming on it prop that bad boy up even with a couple bottle caps on the back end to get some real air flow.
-
TV remotes and Kraft Mac N Cheese boxes work equally well in a pinch.
And yes, it MUST be Kraft. The computer will NOT accept generic brands and will more than likely overheat, causing 7th degree burns to your coffee table.
