I was browsing around the Gateway site looking at the 7811FX when I stumbled across something interesting: specs for a 7812j FX. It differs by a T9400 processor, 3GB DDR3 RAM, 320GB 5400 RPM HDD, Bluetooth and a Blu-Ray drive.

ok... finally i decided to sign up at notebookreview.com... hehe... i've been following this thread for quite a while already... obviously i'm also interested in purchasing p-7811fx... thing is, i just want to know 3 things....
1. how good are the parts of these units? do they break easily? (ie. lcd, keyboard, etc.)
2. how many have experienced out of the box problems? (since i'm going to have it shipped to the philippines.
3. how long till it goes on sale on bestbuy? (an earlier post said to give it a full week... still no sale... -
1- no problems at all that I can see. solid unit
2- no problems out of box. just unbox and turn on
3- I have no idea..patience young grasshopper -
wow...
thanks focus... some were saying though they had issues with the screen when playing games? like the screen turns off and stuff like that
-
-
gracias por tu ayuda!! me tenia preocupado el tema del ventilador ya que es medio molesto que se prenda y apague cada segundo!
Saludos!
bye! -
does anyone here know if it will go on sale on bestbuy soon?
-
its currently $1449.99, which tbh i think is a great price. I don't see BB dropping a sale on these soon, they may drop the P-6850FX in a sale to around 900 perhaps.

I think this computer is pretty good. I personally bought one.
I understand that there are a few trade offs for the price, but a P8400 2.26 vs a slightly faster T9400 2.53 is really not much of a CPU power difference. I render a lot at home with a Q6600, but vs a Q 3.2 extreme the marginally decreased in render time is not that vast to justify 800+ dollars.
Look at the charts on Toms Hardware
So the CPU is energy efficient and perfect because it saves power, more battery time and packs some kick.
In exchange you get a top end GPU and nice screen with HD res, only problem with that is because there is no HD or Bluray drive in this version you really can't utilize it for HD vids on DVD unless they are downloaded. Or neither of those formats, but still HD.
DVDs are pointless, but like people said, with decreases in price of Bluray drives in the future you can always upgrade later on the cheap. If Gateways are easily upgradable like people say. I don't know 1st time Gatewayer.
Even Crysis played on this at that res is still a little laggy. I still can render and see things in that res so for me it still works.
Oh and to let you players know Best Buy 3-2-1 yr Accidental Cover Warranty is international. So spills, drops, basic repairs covered for the whole 3 yrs. Even the new Asus G50 only has a 9700 GT and is only 15.4" with 1 yr Accidental Cover, but 2 year global warranty.
So in the end its like a 2 for 1 notebook special for only 1900$ including warranty. I used to ship my desktop overseas a fare bit, and it broke. So notebook lets have some fun. -
-
not sure if its worth that or not... but there is diff -
I would say that it is worth it...

Just a heads up.. (I know I'm gonna catch sh*t for this) But, I traded in my Toshiba x305 for the Gateway and I couldn't be happier. Cost me the same, and got better LCD and GPU. However, the GPU is soldered to the MOBO so no upgrading this one! I dropped in 2 WD Scorpios 320GB x 7200, and the x9100, and did some OC'ing..see signature. However, the CPU is not OC'd cause the BIOS doesn't allow it. Can't even OC with RMClock, only shows up to 11.5 multipliers. Even tho it's an unlocked Extreme! And RAID does not work. Period. But, once those 2 are updated in the BIOS Gateway will be releasing shortly, then I'll be 100% satisfied. Nevertheless, I can't really complain. Good rig, solid build, runs @ no more than 77C for the CPU. A must buy.

hmm... so you guys really don't think that bb will drop it's price soon? cuz i heard that gateway products in bb get price drops after 1 full week of being there.
-
-
-
-
oh... so bb doesn't make these kinds of items on sale? uhm... what about the p-6860fx then... i remember that went on sale...
-
-
LOL@Syn. Like seriously, thats great.
-
sorry bout the continuous inquiry about bb putting this item on sale. i'd be fine even if it's less 100$... my dad is the one who's gonna get me this one as a graduation gift.
actually, it's like a graduation, birthday, and christmas gift all into one... hehe... if it was me who was gonna buy this though, i would've taken this the moment it got released. unfortunately, i have 2 more months till graduation and till then, i can't earn decent cash. -
As long as this thing is selling, BB knows it can get away with charging $1449. It's, iirc, the basic of supply and demand: you have to wait until there is a surplus of supply and not a balanced demand before the price lowers permanently. I wager that we can apply that to temporary price cuts and assume BB won't have a sale until the hype dies a bit.
That's just my opinion. I'm more than happy to be wrong since I'd love for this thing to go on sale -
Opinions anyone?
I'm in a bind, i have the Toshiba X205-s7483 (stock) that i bought from Best Buy last year around this time. I decided to do some upgrades to it and stumbled over the P-7811FX, and couldn't believe the specs for the price. Here's the problem...... was planning on spending $1150.00 on upgrades, for a few hundred more I could have a new rig; and liquidate the X205 on craigslist
X205 Specs (Stock): [email protected], 2gb Ram, nVidia 8700m 256mb, 120gb HD (5400rpm) x2, 17'' 1440x900 (meh...angle views), Vista Home Premium 32bit. AWESOME SPEAKERS!!
X205 Planned Upgrades:
1. Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz Socket P 35W
2. Samsung 32gb SSD (Latest Faster Version) (OS Drive)
3. WD Scorpio Black 320gb 7200rpm HD (2nd Drive)
4. 4gb (2x2gb) 667 Crucial Ram
5. Vista x64 Ultimate
------------------Around $1150.00
The Cpu replacement is kinda labor intensive on the x205, but ive become fond of my speakers, the ones on the P-7811 are horrible in comparison. 8700m performs well but the 9800gts is sweet looking. Also i would like the new resolution 1920x1200!, but i wonder what i would use it for anything other than squinting. + The chassis on the X205 is huge, and stays very cool, i've been reading that the Gateway gets hot as hell, kinda scares me a bit
I just cant decide what to do, please share your opinions -
screw the screws! -
-
Just picked up a replacement after exchanging my last one due to random freezes. So far, so good. I'll keep you guys updated, I'll pop into wow and see if I can't obliterate the cooling on this thing.
Here's hoping it doesn't freeze on me again -
That's my opinion. -
And nice little mini-review as well. I'll bet that screen is gorgeous! Hopefully, I'll be able to order the upgrade LCD for my 6860 soon.
-
glad you picked up another one! -
ok seasalt... i will take your word for it... but you mentioned something about screen ghosting... is that a big issue? cuz im getting mine shipped all the way to the Philippines and sad as it is, there is no Gateway centers around here or bestbuy. I just don't want to have out of the box problems. what could you say about the overall built of the unit? sturdier than toshiba?
-
I feel it is packaged quite well. It could have a hole in the box and the laptop would be fine I would think. the sides of the laptop may sit 2 inches on each side. the front and back 3 maybe. and then the top and bottom another 3. I would not be too concerned
-
Here are some pics of the ghosting on my screen. I wonder if this is par for the course with this screen or if I should exchange for another one. I only notice against a black background or when I look at the screen from the right. Sorry about this pics, but using my camera phone.
To me it doesn't look any worse than some other pics I've seen of the 6831 and 6860 screens people have here.Attached Files:

e wrecked,
great upgrade, impressive o/c on the gpu.
give us some hwmonitor pictures (leave it running while gaming).
cpuz picture will be nice too, lastly what is the default voltage on that x9100 ? -
Impressive OC, indeed. Along with royks request, I would also be interested in seeing a screen shot of your 3DMark06 score breakdown, if you don't mind. I think you're on of the first 7811 overclockers.
-
An FYI.. if you want to return/exchange it.. just run the restore program, after the restore boots, and ya tell it to format and restore to factory settings.. let it begin formatting, give it 2 minutes or so and turn off the comp. MBR is now gone, will loop the install and BB just tells ya to swap it out. Now, if u r a real scum bag.. go back a couple days later and exhange yours for the open box item you just returnedAnd NO, I haven't done that..but YOU could
-
To be honest..the default core voltage is kinda a mystery. I don't trust what RMClock told me.. however I've found one reputable source that shows the voltage being 1.05-1.2625; http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SLB48.html
I'll be happy to post some OC pics.. the stable clocks don't produce those scores tho..just an FYI. thats unstable bragging rights scoring. The stable 3dmark is more along the lines of 10.5-10.7 mid to high 4's for sm 2.0 and 3.0, and 2800s for cpu. It's late, I'm gonna get some sleep..but I should be able to find the time tomorrow night to post some pics of all you requested. I just pulled up the excel save file for one OC.. and snapped a couple screen shots for ya. And here's a cpu-z shot with the RMClock running.. This is all ive got for now..Attached Files:

e-wrack
thank for the info,
man update those gpu drivers pronto. -
Cool! Thanks for the screenshots! Good stuff.
-
I'm out for the night.. peace.
-
ok... how should i put this... i want one that's thoroughly tested by people fro this forum before i get it shipped over here to the philippines... i don't want one that ghosts or hisses... (obviously) any of you here is near daly city california? a friend of mine is the one who's gonna get this and he doesn't know diddly squat though he'd pretend he knows, and i just want an expert like you guys to screen me a mint unit if it is at any at all possible before i have it taken all the way here...
thanks in advance
-
and hopefully someone who can do what e-wrecked and the others are doing. overclocking and all that cool stuff so that in case i would like to bump up my system, i'd be able to without a problem because the system has been bumped up before.

Could someone post the Conexant High Definition Smart Audio 221 Driver that comes with this notebook. It should be located in
C:\ACER\PRELOAD\AUTORUN\DRV\CONEXANT AUDIO.
I deleted that folder. I guess I should have known Gateway wouldn't have it on their site, or any drivers for this notebook for that matter. Also it appears this driver is non-existent anywhere on the internet. This notebook was almost perfect until this. Gotta knock of a star for bad driver support now.
This driver needs to start multiplying before gateway pisses off more people.
