does anyone know if the 7811fx differs in build design from the 6860?
by that i mean like is the hard drive bay and all that stuff at the same places for both laptops?
and does the 7811fx use Serial ATA or SATA?

sorry for my retarded questions but i just got mine and im trying to find out every single thing about it

because the p2887 locked up playing games, the p2888 just had a bad monitor. the power supply was different as well. Plus all the open box ones at BB were p2887's

Just my opinion, no need to get your panties in a wad

Yes, get the latest version of ntune, 6.03, I think. You'll find info on ntune and latest drivers and links to them here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=265740
I too had BSOD w ntune until I upgraded to ntune 6.03.

GPU will remain throttled until you run something that actually needs it. My gpu core is at 168, mem at 100 and shader at 337 until I actually start playing a game. This keeps the temp low and conserves power until you need it.

I'm seeing another trend here now. some 2888 owners are reporting screen problems. crapping out, ghosting etc. more then the 2887's at least.
2887's are more overheating and lockups related issues. very little screen issues.
am i right or no ??

edit: weird. until yesterday maybe 50% of the stores i checked around in 3 areas on BB's website, dayton, south bend, chicago, carried the 7811. now all of them carry it. system glitch maybe.

Whatever problems 2887 had, it was all due because of the immature bios. Upgrade to newer one and all the lockups and overheating are resolved. I have 2887 model and no problems with any of the claimed things above.

TY it's working now, and yes the throttling is quite annoying. I'm trying to run virtual OS's for testing and the CPU never throttles up. I'll have to work on the profiles for this

Sorry, no. Most of the 2887s, were just fine. Some of them had problems. Why I don't know. Mine was one that had problems. I installed newer drivers and it didn't help. I installed the newest BIOS and that didn't help either. I've documented different aspects of the differences between the 2888s and 2887s here-> http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4073444&postcount=484 and here-> http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4080582&postcount=9

Long story short, if you have a 2887 model and it runs fine, then don't worry about it. If you had lockups, and then you upgraded the BIOS, the nvidia driver or both and the lockups went away, then don't worry about it.

I believe those are clocks for the GPU. That has no correspondence to undervolting the CPU. Use RMClock to undervolt the CPU.

Need some 64X Vista Ultimate help.........

Love my P7811FX for a photoshop workstation. Got version 7.01 to load and operates fine. Office XP loaded, updated and runs fine so far under Vista Ultimate 64X.

I'm missing some of my favorite XP programs though. Anyone know where I can get Vista 64bit compatable programs that do what these used to in XP?

Adobe flash player - wont even load in 64X.

SpaceMonger - Visually displayed size and names of all files & folders on any drive

Image Converter and Editor - Batch processing of TIFF's to jpegs

Spyware Blaster - Tried Spybot search and destroy but it did not allow Perfect Disk 2008 boot order fragmenting upon reboot

    Thanks,Raymond

****I'm really trying to make a go of it on my first vista machine and my first 64bit , too......You really miss XP for all the little things......

someone said u cant OC the card, but Ntune seems to do it.
I had it at 750core/900mem/1700 shader, some higher ones would crash game. (But thats not probem). Nvidia system monitor shows the OC'd values all full when game splash starts, etc...then when entering game just the mem OC trails down to 300 and stays there. the other OC values stay up. It does this if I use default clocks also (600/800/1500). Anybody ever see anything like this or have any theories? I guess I can try rivatuner but want to understand this first if possible.

    Thanks Syngensmyth,

Flash wont load on IEx64. You must be using another browser or IEx32

Hey thanks, Spacemonger works even though it does not support Vista.

I'll try Spyware Blaster again even though it's not supported for Vista.

How about cacheman xp? One of my xp faves......

Still need a batch image converter, though. Any ideas?

Using monkey media to convert and save CD's to mp3.

If nobody has solved the lockup/bluescreen issues with the 7811FX, here's what's wrong and how to fix it.

The power options for PCI Express Link State Power Management are defaulted to Moderate Power Saving or Maximum Power Saving on some of the power profiles. I noticed that if I turned this off, I never had a problem afterwards.

    Try it out!

The only issue I've had is when I come out of standby (sleep in Vista), the CPU fan never turns off. However, I installed 9C.12.00 BIOS last night. The GPU fan doesn't pulse as badly as it used to. I just put my computer to sleep when I left this morning. Will see if the CPU fan still continues to spin after being woken up from sleep. Will report back.

Couple of things since I'm a noob (first post):

Just got the 7811 from Best Buy for $906 + $100 Gift Card, so those looking for one still, my suggestion is to ask your local Best Buy. Also watch the prices because they seem to vary by store and daily for that matter. This one dropped from $1016 to $906 in one day.

    First Question:

I haven't had much time to explore, but does it require the BIOS upgrade to run Raid 0 on the 2888 model or is that just the 2887 and previous that require the BIOS upgrade?

If so, as from what I have seen that this is not a Gateway release (based on their support site for the 7811) will this void the warranty (<KNOCK ON WOOD> I've never had a flash nightmare but I know they happen)?

    Second Question:

I am assuming based on the hard drive discussions in other threads that this system is not limited to 320GB drives? I saw this question asked but did not see an answer. I ask, due to the specs stating it is upgradable to 2X 320GB...

    Finally:

Any suggested freeware cloning/ghosting software on the market? I've used and really liked Acronis, but just don't want to spend the $$$ for a one time thing.

Step 1, get the 08 version bios (10 is testing and 12 has some issues with the Conexant sound working properly). There is risk involved, but have a full battery and be on AC power when you do this.

Step 2, disable the PCI Express Link State Power management. This is what's causing the blue screen errors for people. Make sure it's set to off.

Step 3, find the undervolting guide on this site. This reduces the voltage of the CPU to the optimal level resulting in better battery life, cooler temps, and NO PERFORMANCE HIT. I was able to drop my load temperature on the CPU from 59 C to 49 C following this guide.

To answer question 2, there's no hard drive size limit. so you can do 2 X 320GB if you have the cash to put down. Also, with the 08 bios, you can install up to a X9100 dual core extreme processor. The 12 bios is supposed to support the new quad core extreme, but like I said, I had sound issues with that bios version.

I don't think there's any viable free imaging software. Fork out for Ghost if you need one.

Check your BIOS (read boot screen or go to BIOS setup page) if you have 08 or higher you can do RAID.

Fyi if your looking for free imaging software as long as you have a seagate drive in your machine(7811's) they have a free version of acronis and ive used it now many times and it works like a charm.

    http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...toid=d9fd4a3cdde5c010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

Im not sure if its as fully fleshed out as the full version of acronis but for just making images it works like a charm and i had 0 issues and best of all its free :).

Does anyone know if Best Buy is still actually shipping these from its website? I ordered one for pickup, then later received an email saying it wasn't found at the store, despite being listed as in stock. A CSR then changed the order over the phone to be shipped directly to me, and now I'm worried I'll just be stuck on perpetual backorder if gateway isn't shipping any new units.

Sure hope this forum continues, I'm still discovering new things about my P7811FX and have another question for you forum guru's.

Is there a place to control the headphone jack? In Vista,BIOS,etc? Tried to hook up my 3-4 year old Sony SRS-Z1 powered speakers to my Vista Ultimate 64 bit running laptop and sometimes it works and sometimes I get the laptops built in speakers only. Set up works fine on my old dell inspiron 8100 so before I replace the P7811FX to Sony amp cord tell me are there any headphone jack / audio controls on the Gateway affecting this? Anybody had any trouble with this type of thing?

    Raymond

I'm a photoshopper and I love my Gateway P7811FX. Fast.

    I added a second HD. I now have 2 Seagate 320GB 7200 RPM sata3's running.

Upgraded to Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

Added a 4GB Lexar jump drive lightning USB drive as Ready Boost which isvelcroed to the top of that battery case extension in back and connected via 6" cable and multi angle plug into the top left USB port. Seems to flash alot when both cores are working and I've had no crashes or glitches or even slow downs which normally occur when you run out of RAM while working with 25-50 GB folders as a batch.

Got Paragons parttion Manager Pro and created new partions for boot drive and 5 other logical drives on both 320GB Seagate's allowing locating my windows Vista paging file set to 4 GB (apx) on a 8GB partition and Photoshop scratch disk (same function) 30GB's on a separate spindle from the OS and software for speed.

I love this laptop for desktop use.

Do you have this same problem when you plug in a pair of headphones? Also, when you plug it in and you still get the laptop speakers, are you sure you have plugged it in all the way? Sometimes, I think I have my headphones in all the way, but it just needs to go about a millimeter more.

Nope, tried that. My next step would be to try a new cord but it works fine with my other laptop that's why I was wondering if this laptop controlled it somewhere else. Sorry no headphones with 3.5mm jacks around here but it's worked probably 6 times and hasn't about 25 so I know the headphone jack works on at least those 6 occassions.............Raymond

ever try right clicking the lil speaker in the task bar, and selecting playback devices? It sounds like you're well versed with computers but it's just a shot in the dark. See what devices are enabled and which aren't, and also see if there's a change in the device properties as you plug and unplug. Just trying to trouble shoot from the Vista side.. but next time you have the issue, if you have a iPod(maybe earbuds?), or any type of external speakers(from an older desktop), or a cell phone(almost all include earphones), to see if you get the same results. Offering ideas..hopefully one helps.

I started getting BSODs again when I turned on Adaptive Display and had an SD card in the card reader. Maybe the 7811 locks up when the power changes with that card inside? If the machine drops the power on a device with a mounted file system, that would definitely cause stability issues.

Anyone notice this happening more when they have an SD card in the card reader?

I had blue screens happen sometimes with the sd card in it. This was with the factory installed driver though and haven't had any problems with the latest driver.

(never heard of adaptive display, tho) ^^

Disable adaptive display? another person reported lock-ups with it enabled as well, even without the SD Card.. I've been out of the loop on the 7811 for a minute..but I dont recall ever enabling adaptive display. Personal preference, I suppose..but SD cards never gave me any issues. Driver update?

E-Wrecked you're the man. Thank you. Made headphone jack default input and it works everytime now. I even changed the headphone icon and name of the audio jack. Is this a Vista thing or gateway? I figured it was something I was missing, thanks. I'll try and give you points again but I think it'll tell me I've got to point others first B4 giving you more............Raymond

What are the other choices listed controlling?
eg: Digital output device (SPDIF) / Working- ?
NVIDEA HDMI Output / Not plugged in - ?
