jerri, it all depends on your setup. Most people won't have heat issues with the 9c.05 BIOS. And, personally.. I had heat "issues" when using the 9c.08 BIOS with my x9100 CPU. Not that my system got hot, but my thermal zone sensor kept tripping. If you have the stock CPU, and you upgrade to the 9c.08 BIOS you will likely have a cooler running system, yes. It adjusts fan speeds, new kernel, new ACPI settings.. And, if ya don't see a difference, then change back. I'll post the link to the 9c.05 BIOS on the BIOS thread for anyone who finds issues with the newer BIOS. But, my GPU never hit 70c..and still hasnt..even being OC'd..with ANY of the 7811 models or BIOSes.. check the BIOS thread in a second and it will have a link to the 9c.05 bios if you wanna reflash.

Are you referring to the 7811FX? If so, then 1066MHz..

Q9550 is a desktop CPU, is it not? If so, it will not work. There are mobile quads and desktop quads. AFAIK, if a notebook uses a mobile CPU, then it can only take certain mobile CPUs. Same for desktops.

So, I guess in short answer, no.

darien, if you want to upgrade the CPU you'll need to find a Socket-P. And Centrino 2 would be the ideal combo.. @1066MHz FSB. You can use the previous 800MHz CPU, however you're just shorting yourself..but saving money. :) The QX9300 should be available soon, if you're looking for some real fun. Quad core extreme for Socket-P. The 7811FX BIOS doesn't fully support it yet, though.

That processor is going to cost over $1,000 when it's released? And the Q9550 is still faster at $300.

Yes..it is, but it won't fit in the motherboard. Not socket P, as it is a desktop processor. :)

Why is the processor going to be so expensive? And what are the chances of burn-in on this laptop after using the same programs for hours everyday?

OK first of all i'm on my 2nd 7811fx, the firs was a model p2888 worked great but had a hand sized white haze on the display (lol not cleanable type). I'm typing on the second which is a p2887 and I cna't game for 5 minutes :(. Since BB is discontinuing them i'm hesitant to keep trying more till i find one that works. However I can't find anything comparable.

So my choices are keep trying more models
or buy this sager with penryn technology (even faster video card)

Theres a thread somewhere on this forum in regards to what you're considering.. I just looked but didnt spend a ton of time. There's someone else thinkin the same and the thread was "Why I'm not buying a 7811.." or something. Check it out. May offer some insight.
    To summarize:
I think that video card is the same as the 7811. And it's not Montevina, so you're not going to be able to upgrade the CPU to quad core, and max out @ x9000, if you ever decide to upgrade. But, they are giving them away! Good deal on outdated hardware.

Heck, DELL still does it.. why not, right? :)

While playing Crysis and CS:Source, I seem to have pretty unsteady framerates. During CS:S, my game seems to freeze for about 2 seconds, then goes back to normal. On crysis, my frames dip down to 10fps during no action, while I get 25+ during certain firefights. My GPU temperature never goes over 70, so does that mean I have a driver problem? I am using the stock drivers that came with the computer. Can anyone recommend me a driver for my 7811? I tried a couple, but I always had a problem and I had to reinstall the Gateway driver. Any advice and/or help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It definitely sounds like a drivers issue. Also, make sure your power settings are set to Full Performance. Check to see if you have Powermizer running, if so..turn it off. I found the link below in another thread which helped me out. So give it a shot...

WOOO! JUST TRIED SOME OVERCLOCKING ON THE 9800M GTS

    happy happy joy joy

running mass effect for a few hours, i was able to get up to 760mhz core, 1075mhz ram, and 1700mhz shader.

    using 178.13 driver, gpu-z 2.8
    and the latest ntune.

runs sweet!!!! mind you i have a decent notebook cooler, one that props it up about an inch, and has 2x 60mm fans blowing on the bottom, but the temps didn't pass 68C

i didn't have time to capture a screen shot, but i will! very soon and post it for you all to see.

anyone else getting any lockups while using the dvdrw? the system runs perfectly in every way, i'm so pleased, however, it seems whenever i use the dvdrw drive, for ripping a cd or burning a dvd, not everytime, but frequently the system locks up. the drive will still spin for a sec, and do its spin down, but no keyboard/touchpad and clock frozen etc.
hard reset is the only way out.

i tried to find a firmware update for this drive, but i've been unsuccessful, i have GSA-T50F firmware TP01
not sure if a new firmware might fix the problem, but its odd. anyone else experience that?

anyone had any luck finding a firmware update?

    Hi there,
I just bought 7811 4-5 days ago and with the recommendations here ,I backed up recovery and driver DVDs.And installed a fresh copy of Vista with xfastest drivers and others.Everything but my internet connection seems to work fine.
Can anyone help me? It seems like a DNS problem but not really sure. Here are the symptoms.

-I am living in Europe and my desktop is working fine with the manually entered DNS addresses (Automatic option does not work) When it came to my laptop,I manually entered the addresses for ipV4.I tried both enabling and disabling ipV6 but I only succeeded with local web sites not the others.
-Strangely Vista downloaded the updates (approx.150mb) and installed.Vista update is working fine
-I have the latest NIC driver and yes I installed x64 vista driver with "have disk"

    ==Solved The Problem===
Just used opendns for dns server and it is solved LOL Really interesting because before using OpenDNS I was using the DNS addresses my ISP provided to me

Probably because Gateway is now selling the P7801 on Newegg and since Newegg doesn't maintain storefronts, they're probably getting more profit per sale. Best Buy was just helpful to see how much demand there would be for the notebook.

2888 shipped with a new bios thats now available to all thanks to E-wrecked so if your machine is doing fine then dont sweat it . Mine was pretty much perfect out of the box, therefore didnt see the need to go exchanging it for a new machine with the new bios only to have other problems with it ie dead pixels or anything else .

In response to your question about the multimedia panel, I've harangued Gateway for quite awhile, and they've told me flat out NO, there is no way to reprogram those multimedia buttons.

Which is kind of annoying, since my crappy old Toshiba that's 5 years old lets me reprogram the multimedia keys. We should all complain to Gateway about getting an app to remap those keys to what WE (the consumers ****it!) want it to do!

If anyone has figured this thing out already, please tell me!

Ello folks, Just thought I'd register on this forum because I lurked around and gathered a lot of useful info before and after I bought my P7811..

Went into BB and was looking to get the cheapest crap dekstop they had because I was on a tight budget, I decided to try my luck at a credit card but since I have no credit I was just waiting for them to say "sorry, no." but I got approved for 3,000 bucks and immediately went over and bought the P7811FX and Warhammer. Brought it home installed warhammer and started playing and BOOM, locked. Wouldnt play the game for more than 5 minutes without locking.

Browsed around online and read that some people were having similar issues and it was a hit or miss with these "either you got a good one or you didnt" So I brought the first one back, exchanged it for another one, brought it home and played Warhammer for 5 hours straight, No problems.

I've been playing Crysis and all sorts of games on it since then. Running like a champ.

I am currently waiting for FarCry2 to drop in a few days (I hope it runs it, which I think it will) Can't wait.

Crap guys, I think I messed up.

I was reinstalling windows with the disc that it came with to get all the worthless crap off of it well when I rebooted and started the installation I went into "Custom Install" and went into advanced options on the drivers and deleted both of the drivers thinking it would just erase the stuff on them but when I went to erase the "D:/" Drive both of them disappeared from the list, I clicked "New" and added a new partition that is about 188gigs... does this mean I combined both of them or what?

Does anyone know how to get the individual drives back "C:/ and D:/"?

EDIT: Just finished the reinstall of Windows and now in the "Hard Disk Drives" section I only have 1 and it's "Local Disk (C: )" and instead of 88 or so GB (like it was before) It is now 176 GB....... Everything is working fine so I'm assuming all I did was combine the 2 that were there before... is this a bad thing and is there a way to change it back?

That's funny, my P2887 runs just fine.

You just recombined all the partitions. However, you said 176 GB... so I think you still have the recovery partition, which is actually good if you haven't made your PC Restore and Driver disk. You can easily partition the hard drive in Vista if you wish.

Your first defective model was a 2888.... So why avoid 2887s?
