^ Congrats fellas. I'm considering upgrading to the T8300, T9300 or x9000 sometime later this month. I'd really like to know how the installation goes and how much a preformance boost you experience.

Hey I'm new here but i've had the 6831 for a few months. I was wondering if anyone was planning on installing the new 2.8 gHz t9600 cpu. I'm considering one of the new intel 1066 fsb processors, but I want to be at least 90% sure the laptop will support it. That and whether it's worth the money. Thanks in advance!

the computer wont support it. the newest processors from intel are supported on the PM45 chipset, not the PM965 chipset which is what the 6831 and 6860's have. look for either a T8100, T8300, T9300, T9500, X7800, or X9000 as those are cpus that our laptops support.

well its hot, i am having heat problems atm anyways. the T540 was idleing at 60C and so is this. The T5450 maxed at 85C and this one went to 103C, OCed to 3.0 though. I need some new thermal paste though. Doubled my FPS in kotor though.

Holy ****, Jesus Lord! Theres definitely something goin on heat-wise there. My 5550 even before UV, never got hotter than 60C. I'd say once you get some good thermal paste on that bad boy, you'll be golden. The x7800 only has a thermal design limit of 100C, so its probably starting to throttle around that level.

Another question, I'm assuming that once you get that chip in, the multiplier adjustment magically appears in the BIOS, correct?

ok it is much better now, the problem was when i took its apart the other day i ripped the fan power cable, so the fan aboe the CPU and such was not running at all. I just soldered it back together and it works much better now. @ 3.0 im idleing at 44-48C and maxing at 80-88C, much much better.

Just as an update, I received my T9300 and my replacement CPU. Got the CPU in within 10 minutes, I was surprised how easy it was... Finally saw the two springs and also that blue pad on the chipset everyone is always talking about

Got new CPU installed, booted up fine, no problems, ran Orthos for 2 hours and highest temps I saw were 65, not too shabby considering my ambient temps are probably somewhere between 20-25C. (During the day in the sun it's 35C). Idles about the same, maybe slightly cooler, but idles right around 40C. Crazy thing though that I'm pretty sure is different is the GPU used to idle between 45 or 50C, now it idles same temp as the CPU, 40C. Maybe I'm imagining it, but I'd like to think not :D

Also got the new keyboard in (Yay a spacebar!!!), which was also surprisingly easy, but I had that Gateway pdf file to show me exactly how to do it. ONLY snag I ran into was when I pulled off the media center for some reason I didn't think of just placing it on the LCD without disconnecting it, oh no, I decided to disconnect it. So I got it all put back together, everything worked EXCEPT the power button... I had lost it. The button to the right of the power button would turn the computer on, but obviously wouldn't turn it off.... I pulled it apart again, looked at it, took the little connector off, plugged it back in, nothing.

At one point I even dropped the tiny plastic piece that holds the cord into the power button slot... dropped it onto tile floor of the EXACT same color  my wife was gracious enough to look around on the floor with me for like 20 minutes... FINALLY found it in a crack, but it still didn't turn on.

I woke up this morning, open up the media panel again. I had thought it may have broken but I wanted to give it one more look. I decided to take a quick look at the connector on the other side of the cord, the one that connects to the motherboard..... and there it is. I had been putting the cord into the slot first, THEN putting the plastic connector on top of it... when I had to be putting the cord ON TOP of the plastic connection... So all last night it was the plastic piece making connection with the power button, not the cord. Oh well, lesson learned

That's my update. I'll have to play with the laptop some more to see the difference the CPU made, but so far it seems snappier.

So everything seems okay, only thing I notice is there is like a stutter with the laptop now.... It's like every 5-10 seconds there is a stutter. I turned on crysis for 10 minutes and noticed it, but that could also just be the game

Thing is it also happens if I turn on a movie or listen to. Mp3's, it's like this split-second stutter but it causes a break and a bit of a distortion sound in my movies and music. I checked the power settings, its on high performance. I dunno, I'm a little confused by it. It happens in whatever program I open a movie or music in.

Thanks. All I did was follow the guide posted earlier though. If I didn't have that I guarantee it would have taken 10x longer and I probably would have broken at least one thing along the way

Quick update, sorry for spamming like 3 messages, but I found the source of my stuttering: everest. Kind of strange though, since I didn't have that problem with the t5450 in. I tried changing settings in everest but nothing helped except exiting the program.

Anyone else seen this problem before?

I have never had that problem either, but I have a suggestion. Its a long shot, but worth a try. Windows doesn't update the processor type in device manager after a processor swap. If you look, it still says T5550 or whatever you had. Remove that, reboot and it should repopulate with the correct processor. I seriously doubt it's gonna make ANY difference, but again, its worth a shot as there may be some sort of weird driver thing going on.

I have a quick question. i'm still looking for a reasonable priced processor for my 6831FX when i looked at newegg and saw that they had the new montevina (or P-series) processors available. i did a bit of research and found that it supports the penryn but at the same time not completely sure if they could fit in my laptop.

    anyone have any advice?

Also, does anyone know of any places that sell graphics cards?

The new montevina chips will not fit in the P6831, different chipsets and pin layout so they are not compatible.

As for the new graphics card...for what? If you mean the laptop it is soldered on and not upgradeable.

Does anybody know how to disable the Intel speedstep on a P6860?

There's no settings in bios to tweak and selecting high performance in power settings doesn't help.

Sure it's nice to have cpu throttle down to save power but I've found that DX 10 doesn't play nice with speedstep and the processor sometimes throttles in games. I don't have that problem in DX 9.

Download and run RMClock and just disable all the multipliers except for the highest. Although, I really dont recommend this.

Thank you and trust me I wouldn't consider disabling it if I didnt observe the cpu throttling in DX 10.

I tried installing that program already but gave up because of the rtcore64 error. This time I finally decided to make it work thx to diablo85 here's the link posted earlier here:

Just a quick update on my problem. This really is something else. After realizing with this nice utility that the processor doesnt throttle under load ( DX 10 included) I'll just throw DX 10 out the window and call it a day.

With DX 10 option enabled and the ensuing frame rate inconsistencies ( I tested this on the DMC 4benchmark) are caused by something else. By the way what I'm experiencing is not the usual drop in frames with dx 10 enabled.

Sometimes it runs just great speedwise and other times it drops considerably and loses between 20-30 fps. This never happens in DX 9.

What craziness - OOh I can't wait to buy another sata drive and install XP on ESata ( but thats also a PITA getting it to work  ) so I'll just blame all my problems on Vista for now :D

Yea. Even under the slightest load, Speedstep is more than happy to up the multiplier to get the processor up and running full tilt. I can usually make it go full throttle just by dragging a window. Gaming DEFINITELY prevents it from throttling.

Speaking of DMC4 benchmark, FRAPS really hits it hard. I get like half the framerate as without it. Dont know if you have that running or not.

No I didnt have fraps running. But I tried it and frame rate is the same.

You probably meant recording with fraps while the benchmark is running?

If you're having performance issues while recording with fraps set your video to "half-size" in fraps options. That has a minimal impact on fps for me and stays close to the video's fps target.

thanks for informing me about the processor, though i'm a bit sad because montevina is capable of having higher FSB speeds and distributing less heat than the Santa Rosa. and even sadder.. they cost less :(

honestly apart from the T-series i have no idea which other processors can fit in my laptop but i see that you guys have managed to put in core 2 extreme's in there. is there anywhere on the net u guys can recommend that sells mobile core 2 extreme that could fit in the laptop? thanks in advance

i saw a processor there but it costs $500 T_T

*edit* ok i am seriously confused.. isn't the P8600 a part of the montevina line? when i researched on wikipedia it said that it was Penryn2, and that it was a socket P. i remember someone saying that all socket P processors could fit in the 6831.. but now i hearing about chipsets and all other sorts of stuff so i dont even understand now which processors ma laptop supports :(

can someone plz help me by putting up a little list of the different processors that support the 6831.. i'd be very gratefull

dont pay more than 275 for an x7800/7900
x9000 would go as far as 450.

have in mind that the t8300/t9300 are very capable cpus.
the t8300 is very well priced.

thanks.. i saw the T8300 in my opinion it is far more cost efficient considering that it has only 3MB of cache and 0.1 Ghz less and it cost around $80 less.

but is it absolutely sure that the P-series processors like the P8600 that i saw on newegg would NOT fit in my laptop? i mean, they use the same sockets, they are supported by my laptop's chipset..

Yeap. I got my x7800 for $225. To be honest, price wise, the 7800 is probably the best bang for the FX buck. The only real negative (which I dont really find to be a negative at all) is that it runs a bit warm compared to the Penryns. The chip can be overclocked to 3.0ghz and undervolted way down to lower temps. A $225 cpu brought my 3dmark scores up from 7500ish to 10300ish. If you wanna save money and still get an awesome CPU, the X7800 is definitely worth a look.

i get ya but the only x7800 i see so far costs around $275, while the x7900 costs $200, well when i get the cash i will see what is up but thanks for the advice dook. 1 day i gotta learn how to undervolt and overclock :)

btw - any cooling tips u guys can suggest for the laptop? i noticed that during playing gears of war the laptop gets to a resounding 85degs in only a matter of minutes :(. i tried giving the vent at the bottom some air but it still gets pretty hot pretty fast.

X7800/X7900, whatever. My recommendation applies for either. :) Also the X7900 I believe you are talking about still has 3 days left. It's most likely not going to sell for $200.

Now when you say 85C are you talking the CPU or the GPU temps?
