Don't hold me to this but I believe it stands for "U.S" or "United states" or such. Because Japan models have a J instead of U, and etc.

seriously.. $1800 is too expensive for that unit..
having quad-core is nice but it's only 2.0ghz so it will be slow as hell(not by much from p-8400 but compared to my x-9100 since most programs or games are optimized for dual core and not quad-core)..
ahh.. and then why 1440x900 and 5400rpm hdd?
i rather have 320gb 7200rpm hdd and 1920x1200 screen is like extra $150..
if it had 320gb 7200rpm hdd and 1920x1200 screen i might willing to pay around $1500 but unit like that for $1800 is too much..
no doubt i will need it upgrade to qx9300 extreme processor but even ES version of this cpu go for $600-700..
so let see.. $1800 for laptop. $600 for new cpu, $150 for new monitor, $80 for new hdd, minus $200 for selling q9000 to ebay is around $2430..
darn.. with that money, i can get sager notebook equipped with desktop processor q9550 with 1920x1200 screen with 9800gtx..
total waste of money in my opinion.

quad-core, over double-sized HDD, and double the GFX card memory look really nice. I run at 1400x900 (anything else is too small for me to see), so i wouldn't care about the resolution loss.

All this said, i would never by another fx series laptop, there's too many other things i don't like about it...

    My next laptop will have:
-15.4-inch screen(If they sold the fx in 15.4 inch, with the same specs i'd have bought it)
-no numeric keyboard(i like the middle of the keyboard to be centered on the screen)
-the CTRL and PrntScrn keys will be in their right places

    = )

Hmm does the P-7811 FX have the same motherboard or chipset as this P-7808u? If so, then wouldn't there be a BIOS for the P-7811 FX to support quad?

Quad Core is the Ford Escort of Quad Core chips
    500gb HD but 5400rpm
    1gb memory @ 1440x900 is useless

9800gts is rapidly moving into a mid-range graphic solution.

$1649.00 is too much for that setup.

They need to put a P9500 or better in it, 320gb 7200rpm, and hopefully a GTX260M in the future at that price point for it to even be somewhat viable.

Just not a good price for that. GT725 smacks it around and calls it Susan for kicks easily.

q9000 is an ok processor, but the 2Ghz really hurt it in real world performance (not a lot of multi core programs). If you got something that can use all 4 cores then the q9000 can do a lot, otherwise the p8400 is faster...sad. I would rather have a half way good dual core.

1 gig video ram is useless even for wuxga. the 9800 gts architecture doesn't have any real world improvement moving from 512 to 1gig.
as for the 2.0 quad core. 'nuff said.
i also don't see too much headroom in this laptop design as far as having more powerful components. i think its a design flaw. not enough heatsinks, vents or something. if i raise the lappie just a little during full load, i see a good 10-15 deg. drop in temp. just having a few plastic hinges that raise the comp. a bit at the back wud have been a stroke of genius.

But you can get a high powered quad core cheaper than a duo core one so that leaves me to believe it's not that easy to just switch them.

    how not?

if one quad core works they all should, same pin layout on all of them, they are not all different revisions.

but you have some duo cores that are strickly mobile.

    Example from Tiger Direct

    Core 2 Duo Mobile
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=3793&name=Core_2_Duo_Mobile

    vs Core Duo non mobile
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=2396&name=Intel-Core-2-Duo&Nav=|c:1969|&Sort=0&Recs=10

I'm just trying to understand it. So I could get this and it would work?

No you could not, that quad core is a desktop unit which is designed for a desktop mobo. Mobile quad cores are not really in online retailers yet but they are fairly expensive over a core 2 when you do find them on ebay and the like. I think the additional cost is not just the price increase for the chip but the cost of developing a quad-core supporting BIOS for the system.
