Have you done this? Or are you saying hypothetically? Quite frankly being able to force min fan speed sounds liveable right now, the ramping has been getting on my teets a bit.

Well, took the plunge today. Ordered the P34G from Xotic with the thermal compound, 16GB ram and the AC 7260 wifi card. My co-worker will buy my U2442V2 which helps getting this one. While there are many here that aren't happy with the display, I can say with pretty good certainty that coming from the 2442 model is a substantial upgrade. That LCD screen kind of reminded me of the old days when you had to look at the screen straight on or you would see colors in inverse. I was pretty happy with that one and I am amazed how GB packed a quad core and GTX graphics card into basically the same chassis and upgraded the panel to 1080 with good viewing angles.
Since I have not warmed up to Win8 at all, I will install our Enterprise W7 64bit version, unless I get some compelling reason why I should switch. -

Hello Guyz,:hi2:
I have a question regarding the ram...what should I go with 8gb or 16gb. My main purpose will be gaming and multitasking. As this machine has 1x DIMM of 8gb should I go with other one....
Also any suggestion how is the warranty support of gigabyte as I am buying there laptop for first time from xoticpc. Any help would be seriously appreciated... -
I went with 16 GB as I tend to run VMs fairly regularly. My machine arrived yesterday from xoticpc and so far, so good. I went with w7 over w8 owing to some key corporate apps that don't yet play nicely with w8. Looking for any and all advice to extend battery life. Also what app(s) are people using to monitor internal temps?

If there's a laptop you can almost be certain there'll be a good thread on notebookreviews.com. Thank you all that's contributed with bits of info and experiences!
I've ordered this laptop as a replacement for my trusty and heavily used, yet unfortunately dying Acer "13.3 i5 3820TG which I've had since they where first released. To my eye the P34G appears to be more or less the present day equivalent of the 3820TG, except of price. The 3820TG was a steal back in the day. I ruled out the MSI GE40 because of reviews reporting (I understand it's been changed now) poor screen and inadequate cooling solution. Also ideally I wanted a weight below 2kgs for portability reasons. Battery life is of no major concern.
Ordered the version with 128GB mSATA/1TB HD and 8GB RAM and no OS. Also ordered a stick of Samsung 8GB DDR3L RAM, hoping that it will work fine with whatever's in the unit from factory. Will be swapping out the 1TB drive with an 1TB Samsung 840 Evo. Plan to run OS (Win7) and programs from the mSATA and use the big drive for storage and games. I do a lot of graphic work and heavy photo editing (InDesign/Photoshop primarily) but I'm on a budget so this is my way to maximize performance in a portable package. Obviously the screen is, while seemingly quite adequate, not up to professional color gamut and accuracy demands, but there are ways around that and it surely looks to be a massive improvement over the lackluster panel of the 3820TG.
Crossing my fingers for a unit that hangs together with no major QC issues and adequate performance. At least one week wait as availability in Norway is scarce - it's special order. Time to ad some more glue and ducttape to the chassis of the 3820TG to keep it together until then

What are the timings on the stock 8GB ram so-dimm in the p34g?
I'll likely upgrade it myself to 16GB and don't want to waste money on something better if it doesn't match up. -

Can anyone who ordered from XoticPC indicate how long it took you to receive the laptop from when you placed the order? Nothing custom added to mine, standard config. TIA.

Even I ordered the machine from xoticpc and they emailed me that it will take more than 2 weeks for the product to arrive and after that may be more 1 week cause of high demand of the machine and less inventory supply from Gigabyte....I know its a lot of time but at-least its worth waiting cause it is xoticpc and they do check for all the QC and optimal benchmark....Hope for the best...
Any idea about the Gigabyte warranty support as how reliable it is in terms of services...Any help will be greatly appreciated. -

Any idea about the Gigabyte warranty support as how reliable it is in terms of services...
I would also like to know the maximum overclock possible for this machine at optimal temperature as it is GTX 760m....Can the clocks and memory reach to gtx765m by any mean...I heard that the cooling of the machine is quite good to handle...just want to know the sweet spot of overclocking.
Any help will be greatly appreciated -
Thanks a lot for the reply...I have ordered for the 16gb...does VM take more than 8gb of ram in reality....Also is it possible to install Linux, Ubuntu or Win7 simultaneously in this machine with win 8...or is there any setting to do in BIOS..Thank you

The problem with Amazon and Newegg is that neither of them have stock currently. Amazon is orderable through Adorama, but Amazon themselves does not have stock. When I first started this ball in motion, Xotic was the only one who had the machine available, so that's who I had to go with.

Odd, they indicated that they have them in stock currently, and that without any customization, processing would only take 1-3 days. Total shipping time will be longer than that, of course.

I wish this laptop was available at Fry's so I can see it in person before buying. Not sure why Fry's don't have them since they have other Gigabyte products like motherboards, video cards, and computer cases.

I just updated my BIOS, and now finally adaptive brightness appears to be gone. But I think the fans are a little more active now, though I might be imagining that..

My customized unit shipped exactly one week after order and arrived to me with free ground shipping four days after that.

Test Gigabyte P34G Notebook - Notebookcheck.com Tests
Those idle power consumption and battery life numbers are awful, glad i disn't pay a premium price for that kind of preheistoric efficiency. 35 db idle lol. -
I'm not sure I fully understand what people were expecting from the power consumption of this laptop. Just look at the thing. It's thin, has a powerful CPU and GPU, two drives, and a high-resolution screen. It obviously wasn't going to last 4 hours on battery life! If you need a machine to last you longer then you either need to scrap that GPU and dual drives or go for something bigger/thicker. Gigabyte made an awesome job with the P34G, and I personally applaud them for it.

I got mine from Adorama through Amazon. I lost out on the prime 2 day shipping but I got it in about 5 days to San Jose and I did not get charge CA sales tax so it worked out. -
I don't need more than 3+ hours of battery as I won't be using it much on battery. I have an ASUS ME400C Win 8 tablet that I use while on the go. Actually with an aftermarket low weight PSU. my travel weight is still under 6lbs even with the tablet. -
Re the power consumption/battery life discussion....
There will more often than not be drawbacks to a consumer product, corners cut so to speak limited by technology, resources and price point. Perfection is an extremely rare treat even in high end stuff. The question is really if the drawbacks impacts your intended way of using the product or not. Alas, before choosing you have to prioritize and decide what you can live with and what you can't.

Note to 15.6" heavy laptop users - many (non-US) airlines make you check your carry-on if the combined weight of your carry-on bag and briefcase/backpack is over 40 lbs. I travel extensively on international business and I absolutely refuse to check bags (as that means having the airlines lose your stuff) so weight is super critical. What's more, no laptop is going to last me for the 14 hour flight from the US to China, but many flights have A/C power in the seat now...so the only time I'm on battery is for short meetings. -
Does anyone have any good resources for how to make a custom bios? I'd really like to have one for this machine, but I can't seem to find anyone with experience willing to do it, so I was thinking I'd give it a shot. A custom bios could potentially allow us to further overclock the graphics card as well as mess with TDPs on the processor and even disable cores! It could potentially allow for significantly improved battery life and/or performance.

I got much better results than that for temperature and battery life (I got the exact same results at stock, but with power profile, undervolting and brighness you can get 4 ish). Noise didn't seem that bad and they're worse than the measures for the Deviltech fire DT14 (MSI GE40).
So now I know I can expect better results for the MSI GE40 than they got in their review.
Not to discourage potential buyers, but I'm dissapointed. It's not at all a bad notebook. I just expected more for the premium price. I'm buying a GE40 barebone for 400 eur less with slightly better hardware. Some owners have confirmed the screen can be upgraded to the same as the P34G. -

Few things:
1. If you are a VAT registered company, provide your VAT number and OCUK will probably not charge you VAT - otherwise as an individual you have to pay VAT
2. The warranty is international. You have to ship it to the "local" service centre. Look @ gigabytes website for details.
3. Not sure how it works in Belgium, you are probably going to get stung for import VAT & Duty if purchased outside the EU. Look up details on your local govt site. -

Review DevilTech Fire DT14 Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews
Someone mentioned that the temperatures could be easily solved if you repasted which would bring them closer to each other in terms of score. -
Has anyone noticed that there's an eject button on the Esc key...? What's the point of that lol.
-
Anyone bought an extra 8GB for the stock model? If so which brand and spec did you get and do you have any problem. TIA.
-
I finally made up my mind and went with this laptop (can't wait!). Buut I ordered through amazon from a third party retailer since amazon is out of stock.
I had to order it through Adorama Camera, and since I read that others ordered from this retailer I thought I would ask...
When I got the confirmation email it read that they were out of stock (even though they list on amazon they have it in stock :/ ), and that it was shipped via Drop Shipped (i.e. they passed on the order to the manufacturer). Did other people who ordered from Adorama Camera experience this, and if so did you still receive the laptop on the expected date?
Thanks -

As it's been mentioned before, there seems to be some QC issues such as with the keyboard tray being loose. After tightening the screws in the base I noticed one corner was still particularly loose so I took a closer look and it appears that the one loose screw is the wrong type/defunct.
another screw for comparison
Although I love this notebook and, at this moment, no other compares to it in regards to it's form factor/performance trade off. But for the price these things shouldn't slip through. -
How loud does this laptop get during gaming when plugged in? Does it sound like a hairdryer like the new AW14?
I'm currently using my Asus G46, is the sound on full load probably the same?
Thanks in advance! -
