    Hey guys,
is anyone running Linux on this machine? If so, how are you using smart manager, smart update, etc. on it? Wine? And also, if you're using it in Linux, what about gaming on it? How is that? How is battery life, Bumblebee etc.? I may try running and gaming with OpenSuse on my P34G, but I'm not sure. Thoughts and comments?

What happens is the brightness adjustment pops up and goes up and down, but it has no effect and the screen stays dim.

    No.

I think it happens only after sleep and not full hibernate.

I'm running Ubuntu 13.10 on it pretty much exclusively and it works perfectly. I've got to say I don't use it on battery much so I haven't tried to optimise it at all but it gets at least 3 hours. Bumblebee works just fine - I tried very briefly to get the automatic switching from the latest drivers working but couldn't however I didn't try very hard.

Why would you want smartupdate and smartmanager under linux? They don't seem much use under windows.

Overclocking, power management, and for getting driver updates. Do you use Wine to game on it?

For windows I prefer third party tools for any overclocking, windows inbuilt power management is fine also and the only driver I wish to update semi frequently would be the nVidia graphics and they have their own version notification tools.

Under linux wine wouldn't help with any of the above and the OS package management is far superior to that on Windows anyway. I've played a couple of native Steam games in linux - mainly dota 2 but I've also played Diablo 3 under wine which apart from a bug in the games launcher works perfectly.

Can I remove the 1 TB harddrive and still maintain the functionality of my laptop?

I haven't been able to resolve the loud clicking WD Harddrive issue and so am going to be sending the HD back for a replacement. Windows is installed on my SSD, and the only thing I have on my 1 TB drive is music. Can I simply remove the harddrive, and maintain the functionality of my laptop, or is there anything I will need to do once it is taken out? I'm not super tech savvy, so am just trying to figure out the best way to go about this.

    Thanks!

The OS and Boot partition are all on the mSATA SSD so you should be fine to just take out the HDD without any issues.

    Thanks!

Well, I took out the HDD and rebooted, and the noise persists! Do you all have any idea what could be creating the noise?

To try and describe the noise more fully:
Noise appears to be loudest near the removable back panel. Sounds very similar to an HDD accessing data -- kind of a repetitive mechanical crackle. I don't always hear the sound, sometimes it will randomly stop (it just stopped as I was writing this). I don't see any link between what I am doing and the occurrence of the noise -- it appears randomly and stays on for many hours before going away again.

    Any ideas?

What? Another issue with the P34G? Say it isn't so?

So, everytime I turn on my laptop, the wireless card is turned off. I have to press Fn + F2 to enable the card and connect to wireless. I'm not sure how to correct this. Anybody have this issue / know a fix?

Also, it seems the first time I press the power button to turn on the machine, nothing happens except the power light on the bottom turns on, then off. The second time I press the power button, boot up is normal. Strange...

    Thanks for the help guys.

Sad to say but I also have this issue. I am using Intel proset drivers. Maybe there's issues with conflicting control between windows 8.1, Intel, and hardware switch to turn on the wifi.

I just turn it off instead of sleep. On and off is fast anyways.

The only other mechanical part(s) in the entire laptop are the fans. When the laptop is off, try spraying some compressed air into each one and see if maybe some dust or something got into them. Otherwise it could be a loose bearing which may need manufacturer intervention.

Ok- problem. My webcam can't be detected. Tried rebooting and no good. Yikes. I don't know where to find it in the device manager, but I don't see a "webcam" category..any suggestions?

Edit: fixed- was off under smart manager! Dumb mistake lol

no need to find win8key. just boot with the usb stick you created using smart usb backup. i do not use any antivirus software. i just use windows defender, and scan with malwarebytes manually every now and then

Thanks! Yea some antivirus are on sale on newegg but I'm usually careful of my downloads, but my gf uses my laptop sometimes so I would get it for her. I did get an odd Trojan hit on defender for an .inf file.

If I boot with the USB will it give me the option to not install a backup partition?

You ever resolve the issue? I am experiencing what sounds like the same exact noise that you describe. It actually sounds like it might be the fan on the right side but it does not always do it.

So the dimensions the same on the v2? You lose the hard drive for more battery? Wonder how much this will run for.

The new razer also looks incredible but way way out of my price range.

The battery is 33% larger so you should get that much extra battery life when not gaming or using the nVidia graphics. When using the graphics it's impossible to say without testing but apparently there are some big battery life improvements on that side but if the throttling on battery continues you won't see any of that.

Only way I won't have buyer's remorse at this point is if they charge more for it.

I haven't opened the laptop up yet but you think it's the same chassis? Doubt they would make this expanded battery for us v1 users but that'd be awesome.

    I have a few Linux/P34G questions:

I've been trying to get Xubuntu x-64 13.10 to install on my machine, but it doesn't work. If I set it to legacy boot, the Xubuntu screen loading indicator just spins and spins. If I set it to UEFI boot, the screen loading indicator freezes.

I had Lubuntu 14.04 installed on an external hard drive to try it out, but I want to use Xubuntu because of XFCE. I deleted the EFI boot partitions on my Msata drive, but the Ubuntu bootloaders for Lubuntu are still present in Bios. Is this related to Xubuntu not working? How do I remove them? I can still boot to Windows by the way.

Last, when I installed Lubuntu, it didn't detect my Windows install. I have two drives: one is a 1 tb hdd with my data and the other is my windows boot ssd. I'd like to have Xubuntu and Windows boot from the ssd and have the 1tb drive for shared games/data. How would I do this?

I have fooled around with Linux in the past, but I am a "newbie." Any help is much appreciated!

Disable the nvidia external graphics in the bios - I can't remember what I had to do after that to get it booting with the external enabled it might have been as simple as installing 13.10 and doing an update afterwards. Let me know if you have any problems.

I managed to get 13.10 installed by disabling 3d acceleration, but I am having issues getting the nvidia drivers to work. I manually installed the nvidia drivers from their site in the ctrl alt f1 manner. They are installed correctly, but when I go to start x server settings I get, "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server." It has something to do with optimus. I have trieed running sudo editor nvidia-settings and sudo nvidia-xconfig, but nothing changes. I don't have bumblebee because the Nvidia drivers now support optimus? I am loving Xubuntu minus this and also the fact that my touchpad hasn't worked yet. Any ideas as to how I could enable that as well?

    Here you go. It's 1600x900, surprisingly. jcj933U.jpg

I personally would take the 2.5" bay over the 33% increase in battery life. An SSD is really nice while a larger HDD is great for storage.
The 860m should be a minimal boost in performance(correct me if I'm wrong). The only thing it really has going for it is the 4GB of VRAM.

On the razer: They stuck a 3200x1600 res screen on a 14"? Isn't that a bit excessive? It's also a glossy touch screen, which is kinda surprising considering it is a gaming laptop after all.
I highly doubt the 870m will be able to push high settings on newer games at that res. But, it could work very well on older games.
I'm also surprised at the fact that they put a weaker GPU in the Blade Pro...? What's up with that?

For the touchpad turn the laptop off, wait maybe 30 seconds and turn it back on. It sometimes isn't detected and I'm not sure why but it doesn't even show up as connected hardware sometimes.

For nvidia this is the bit that took me the most time - I didn't have any of the problems you are mentioning with not being able to start x but I never got it working without bumblebee. Admittedly I didn't try that hard as I only play one or two games so it's not that important to me.

I'm still having issues with the touchpad and Nvidia drivers and now I've added another one. My 1 tb hdd full of my data is no longer accessible in Linux. It has all of my documents, photos, games, etc. on it. I get this error: Error mounting /dev/sdb1 at /media/drewm3i/8AB658D2B658BFFD: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/sdb1" "/media/drewm3i/8AB658D2B658BFFD"' exited with non-zero exit status 14: The disk contains an unclean file system (0, 0).

Windows fully (no hibernation or fast restarting), or mount the volume

When I got Xubuntu up and running, I reactivated Intel fast boot in bios. I have since deactivated it, but I stil can't access my data. What do I do? Help!! :///

If you disable the nvidia gpu in the bios Xubuntu plays ball with the 14.04 nightly builds pretty much fine. For obvious reasons you can't install/use the nvidia drivers since from the kernels perspective you have no nvidia hardware only the intel HD4600.

Also that error with NTFS implies windows didn't dismount the partition cleanly, this is probably due to windows 8's hybrid shutdown option. How to enable or disable Hybrid Boot in Windows 8 turn it off here. (downside is longer boot time)

Thanks for helping with mounting my D drive! It worked!

So, do you know how to run the hd4600 to save power and the 760m for performance without Bumblebee? Is this possible? If so, please share! I want to use the 4600 for everyday tasks and the 760m to play games through wine. I am at a loss as to how to do this!
Also does anyone know how to get my trackpad working? This is keeping me from using Xubuntu at school! Sorry guys I'm a Linux noob.

AnandTech is saying that the Maxwell 860M should be about 40% faster than the 760M.

Not. Even. Kinda. :) The 3200x1800 screen halves to 1600x900, which is perfect for gaming, and a retina class display can scale for many other usable points in between.

40%? Wow. That's if they put in the Maxwell chip, though. According to Linus, there's also going to be a Kepler 860m and Razer is going to put a mix of both in their laptops.

And yeah, I know you can drop the res, just didn't realize how perfectly it dropped to 1600:900.

None at all but I bought more for the CPU rather than the GPU - its nice to be able to do a little gaming but realistically games in a year or two will be too intense to play at decent settings anyway but the CPU will still be fast enough for my development.
