It's been a while. I was wondering if anyone found a solution to get 2560x1440 out through the HDMI port? The only way I got mine to work is with a ($90) USB 3.0 to Display port adapter. Just wondering if any better solution have came up in the last few months?

It's with both the stock card and my replacement dual band Intel 7260AC. I tried uninstalling the Gigabyte drivers, and even did a clean install with Intel drivers, and had the same issue. Waiting after resume didn't fix it.

That is strange. You updated to windows 8.1 as well? Does using smart manager or keyboard hotkey work to tturn it on?

I'm starting to notice a large grid pattern behind the central part of the screen when I'm looking at darker stuff (webpages with black/grey backgrounds, for example). I thought maybe this was keyboard related, but the pattern doesn't match up. It's just barely noticeable and doesn't show up in any photos I've taken.

I don't think it's any kind of ghost image, is it just something related to the construction of the panel?

I've clean installed Win 7, 8 and 8.1, The FN switch doesn't work. Gigabyte said it was a faulty mobo, but whatever they did on my RMA didn't fix it.

I think it may be related to the screen construction. I started noticing a splotchy pattern that looked like it matched the keys, but it was a bit off. After my dead-pixel replacement, it's gone away.

It sounds really similar to my problem in the past but I don't know why it's not fixed for you yet. Is it only with sleep?

I've noticed the same keyboard-like pattern, and I also frequently see ghosting after a long day when I open a grey background (Start page is dark grey for me). It's unsettling, but it always goes away eventually.. The keyboard-like pattern looked identical to the ghosting, but I don't undestand what could have caused that pattern..

Anyone got a clue where replacement rubber feet for the P34G can be found? one of mine has gone missing and it's a pain to type on now...

Edit: Gigabyte are sending me some after asking nicely.

Hi all, somehow the surface of the screen has become scratched (I can see it when the screen is off and the screen is reflecting a light but the mark is so slight I can't there is any real depth to it). It's small (maybe 3 or so pixels wide and 1 tall) but almost right in the centre of the screen and very noticeable on white or light backgrounds.

Has anyone else had this happen? I've read there are ways you can try to repair it, rubbing with a microfiber cloth made it a little less noticeable but it is still very easy to see even from 3 feet away.

I'm not sure if there's anything I can do with the warranty, I don't think this has accidental by default as some ASUS do so I am interested in trying to do what I can if possible.

Would doing something as suggested here: 4 Ways to Fix a Scratch on an LCD Screen - wikiHow with Eraser, Alchocol or even Vaseline help? Or is all that just going to make this worse? Is there some other good way? It feels like the Matte coating may be more fragile than the average glossy.

    Thanks very much,
    Peter

    Hi guys,

I am still having a problem with auto dimming / brightness.
Is anyone else having an issue or anyone know how to resolve it?

    * just to clarify: my screen auto dims when I am on a black based background then takes a couple seconds to reach back to normal brightness once im on a white background.

I tab in and out of screens a lot so its a huge pain going from dark to bright back to dark evrery couple of seconds.

I hope someone has a solution. Thanks

Same problem here. It's barely noticeable, but still really bugs me..

And I also frequently get ghosting.. Think I'll ask gigabyte.

You mean keyboard ghosting right? I did experience it a bit with a certain combination of keys. I don't remember exactly, but it may have been ctrl + W + D or something, maybe with shift as well. It wasn't too annoying, but I did notice it.

Hello, if it's not too much trouble could you tell me model of the panel this laptop uses? I currently have a Samsung laptop with an AUO9003 panel (AU Optronics according to HWinfo) that has ghosting/image retention issues (not sure if there's a difference) which is very easy to see against grey backgrounds. I've had this Samsung laptop for a year and believe me, the problem got worse over time, so it does worry me that this laptop may have something similar (I'm interested in it).

I only noticed it when I accidentally pressed like 3~4 buttons at the same time. It's a very strange combination of keys anyways so you most likely won't notice it on a daily basis.

Well it's not the same model of course but the same brand... I'd be wary about image retention. For reference, here's a pic of what my (again, Samsung) screen looked like (a little edited of course :p). What you see on the left was burned in from a word document window, and it was very clear against that webpage with a grey background. It sort of went away after the computer was off for a significant time, but still.

It was available in Smart Update.
It seems broken though, launching it does nothing.

I'm also starting to hear a really faint high pitched noise when all the fans are off, not sure if it's HDD noise, airflow or some kind of electronic whine. Pretty irritating.

Sure enough Smart Switch 2.0.0 must've been some kind of glitch. I just updated to Smart Update 2.1.0 and it asked me to reinstall Smart Switch 1.5.2.

    Weird.

Any tips on extending the battery life? I have a cross-country flight later this week, and the best I've been able to get is around 2 hours, just doing web browsing and Word doc editing. Really disappointing. I've been using this charger when I'm not at the office, don't know if that could be causing me problems.

Use http://www.seatguru.com to see if you flight has AC or DC power and try to sit in one of those seats. Domestic flights are tough, but sometimes you can get lucky.

Otherwise, I remember someone talking about an external battery earlier on the thread.

Otherwise, turn the brightness all the way down, don't use the NVIDIA card, etc. etc.

I get at least 6 he's just web browsing with 20% brightness. Make sure it is on power saver or at least balanced. I dunno if word editing eats up that much more battery.

I think someone had a power gorilla with mixed results.

Thanks for the replies. Looked up my flights, only have power on one of them. Not cool.

I have my brightness at 20%, in power saver. No clue why my battery's getting chewed through so quickly. Maybe too many tabs open?

In power saving, the Intel GPU should be doing all of the work, right? Not quite sure what software's telling the machine to use the less resource-intensive GPU.

I ended up selling my P34G because of this high pitched noise. It's caused by the CPU entering power-saving states. You can almost completely eliminate it by turning off intel speedstep or using throttle stop to maintain higher clocks, but you'll be lucky to get 90 min. worth of battery out of it, and the fan will be continually going. It was hugely irritating to me.

Sorry, forgot to repost the reply from Gigabyte:
Setting Display Power Saving Technology to off seems to do the trick nicely regarding the adaptive dimming/backlight intensity. Noticeable difference right away. But no reassuring reply regarding the image retention.

EDIT: How many of you have noticed ghosting/image retention on your p34g's? (use a dark grey background to make it more visible)

The new version of Smart Update is pretty irritating. Or maybe it's just irritating seeing how haphazardly the old version would alert me for beta drivers. Always nice to see beta and official the same version number. Or see a version I had from an old Smart Update has a version number in between the current official and beta. Plus the ongoing disparity between what SU says and what Intel's own utility says.

Had some weirdness updatingdrivers from the Intel utility (wifi, Bluetooth and video) earlier today:

During the Wifi install I was getting a "server busy" error prompting me to retry or switch target, without interference the install completed with the message still present. The Bluetooth install seemed to work fine, but after a reboot the device was disabled.

Did a repair install of both, same thing happened with the wifi driver, but now they both seem to be working fine.

    Will monitor for now.

(This is with an Intel 7260ac)

A bigger concern is after updating the Intel video driver my webcam no longer works. When I launch AmCap I'm getting an error saying I have no video capture hardware. Likewise Skype detects nothing and I don't see the webcam in device manager. Anyone have any ideas?

Disregard that part, had the camera disabled in Smart Manager \:

    Always nice to see :)

On that image retention thing: It happens SO often. It basically always occurs now. Again, it won't cause me to RMA it, but still. What causes this? Is it going to hurt the screen in the long run?

Edit: Wait, what? The 4.0.3 beta update of Smart Manager got rid of the GPU boost? Why?

I like the portability of this thing, but the clunky power brick kills it. And let's face it, the battery life stinks. Has anybody found a slimmer / lighter power brick to use with this thing?

I really don't think it's a problem. It's not like I am trying to shove the brick in a sleeve. I love this laptop. Battery life is fine, it's not like you didn't know the battery life...

Just curious if anyone else has considered a keyboard mod for this guy.

Anybody know if the size of the keyboard is some standard size/shape?

Anybody taken the laptop apart enough to see the keyboard is mounted and attached to the frame?

Personally, I'm not too happy with the feeling of the keys. Its not so much the flex (which there is a little), its more the mechanism that I don't like. I frequently get typos due to how easy some keys are to press, and the keys themselves seem to be loose, as in they wiggle and click a small amount when touched or depressed.

If anybody knows anything of this sort, the info would be appreciated.

I am planning my second RMA coming up. The first was a sound card issue, so they replaced the motherboard, taking forever to do so, and forgot install my (or any) working windows 8 activation code on the new BIOS. Somewhere in the process, the 1tb hard that had also broken was not replaced by either XotixPC or GIgabyte RMA. So I had to get XoticPC to ship me a new hard drive, even though I already threw in a Samsung EVO SSD that I had got in preparation for the P35K. Ended up with the P34G because the wait for the P35K was taking forever due to the bending in half fiasco.

This thing is a beast, especially with the mSATA SSD and Samsung SSD combo (OS onstock mSATA). I use the Samsung SSD for storage, and it holds all my files except for my videos, but I can move those with the USB 3.0 pretty quickly anyways. Gaming is great on the P34G, the screen is generally great, and I like the matte finish, though I have experienced the keyboard markings on the screen like many others. This is usually not an issue, but you can see the marks pretty clearly when the screen is off or in a very bright setting, in which case they can obscure the screen.

Like I said, I am now about to send it in for the second RMA, this time to get a working BIOS Windows Authentication so I don't get thrown into the blue screen asking to activate windows every hour or so. Overall I am impressed with the machine, but not so much with Gigabyte RMA and customer service. Previous RMA took forever and communication wasn't great. I feel like they should have fixed many of the first generations with the P34G V2, or at least I hope so. I'd be interested to see if any of the new components could be retrofitted to the P34G V1, mainly an updated keyboard or the new (slightly bigger) battery. Although I expect the battery life will also improve due to the Maxwell architecture. Anybody know if this update will have any effect on power consumption when the GPU is not is use vs the current gen?

Anyways, orry for nerding out. On a sidenote, I have also gotten TAILs to run and function on this thing. I installed a boot partition on a flashdrive then another copy on a microSD card (through USB adapter). Anybody have questions about the process, feel free to ask. The main thing is to disable GPU acceleration and other boot devices in the BIOS. It may take a few tries.

I've been getting the same "Server Busy" error, but I don't think mine is wifi. Immediately after the notice, the screen goes black, turns back on, then I get a note saying the NVIDIA driver crashed and recovered. Then the laptop will BSOD.

Very frustrating. Has happened 2x today.

I'm assuming it's a Windows 8 issue, not something specific to any one driver's install package.
I guess that's good and bad news.

    Hi guys,

I just got the P34. I have searched the thread and googled but didnt find a very good answer.

Does the P34 automatically stop charging the built-in battery once it is full? I had a samsung ultrabook with propriety software whereby i can set to stop charging the battery at a certain percentage. I couldn't find a gigabyte one nor any 3rd party software.

There was a question on this on page 64/65 but the answer was not what i was looking for.

Amazing laptop for the price as lo g as you understand its limitations than your expectations will be aligned. I haven't seen the numbers on v2. We were curious if we could swap out or hdd for extended battery.

I've had mine since November and my only complaint is the fan noise. Other than that they nailed everything I cared about. It's a great performer and the screen is excellent. The build quality is the best of any notebook I've used in recent memory. There are some things that may bug you if they matter a lot, such as the size of the charger (it comes with a 120w brick, but you can buy a replacement 90w) and the overall crumminess of the speakers. The battery life is also said to be quite poor, but I almost never take my off the charger so I can't comment on this.

I actually like the speakers! Lol I was blown away by how good the spatial effects sounded. You guys know there are speakers underneath the laptop too? That's the secret.

I find that concept so stupid. Speakers on the bottom of a laptop and speakers on the back of phones. It makes absolutely no sense. Why send sound AWAY from you?

It sounds dumb but I thought it really makes the audio sound surround. To each their own
