Hmm... I don't actually. I'll go dig some.

Lol no need for 3k. I have been using a 4k for some time now, played many games between 1080 all the way to 4k just fine. I think I'm covered
-
What do you mean? The heater will turn on if its below 18, until it gets to 18C... I dont think his room temp is 10C... At least i hope so

Can you confirm how much is "Very High SSAA" for example, I believe even 2x SSAA would mean you are rendering the game well over 4k resolution and then downsampling to your 2880x1620 display. If Very High SSAA is 8x or more, I'm surprised the game even runs at all.
Highly recommend the Zalman NC3000 cooler. -
You can set the thermostat to turn on the heater at degree of your choice, for example, my house's thermostat is set at a 17°C. Looking for an dial on the wall near boiler, or on the heater if they're individually heated.
Regards. -
You misread is all.
"Settings: 2880x1620, Very High, Tessellation: Very High SSAA: No, PhysX: Yes"
Settings:
2880x1620
Very High
Tessellation: Very High
SSAA: No
PhysX: Yes
but yes he did mis a comma in there making it confusing. -
Supposed to be a comma there! Ooops! There was no SSAA applied (that would be over 4K rendered resolution!).
-
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Haha oh wow, thanks!
I was really shocked he had SSAA set to "Very High" -
Keep forgetting about SSAA... I doubt the FPS would jump much in these Benchmarks even if it was a 1080P screen.

Does anyone know if Cakefish has a glossy or a matte 3K? OCUK doesn't have the info.
-
anyone got some numbers on the p170sm fan noise (dB)
???? -
I think I will get the FHD screen based off these benchmarks and cap the fps at 60 using the Nvidia tools to keep the GPU cooler.
-
Cakefish, when you wake up, please let us know if your fans are quieter than this bad boy:

That's my only reference on Gigabyte fan noise at the moment. -

Looks like the P35x has a different version of the fan tweak app with 4 settings instead of 3: GIGABYTE - Laptop - Laptop - P series - P35X v3
I'm usually using headphones, so fan noise is a not really an issue for me. -
Time for bed now. I'll get round to answering more questions tomorrow asap, after my lectures - I'll have plenty of time from tomorrow 3pm onwards
1080p in-games definitely looks no worse on this display than 1080p native on a 17.3" display. I will have no issue running games below the native 3K. It is nothing like running a 720p game on a 1080p display, not even close.
Final thought: GPU temps seem to be well under control (yet to see the GPU go over 81°C), it is the CPU temp which is the more troublesome critter - I will have to try undervolting the CPU I think!
Goodnight all! -
now the big decision. wait 1 month for the 1080p screen or just go the 3k screen grrr
this has swayed me a lot from The $4800 msi gt72 l..... -
Why do you have to wait a month? You mean for the CF1 config with the 4860?
-
for the 1080p
in australia -
How is heat around keyboard and mouse area, can you feel it on the surface after heavy gpu/cpu load? Also, how is the underside as well can this be used in your lap for surfing/light use?
-
Oh, man. You guys can't tell how much I (and a lot of other v2 owners, I'm sure) am envying you right now. A GPU that's twice as powerful AND runs less hot? I'm extremely jealous of you guys. I can just imagine NVIDIA slowly whispering into my ear, "It didn't hurt THAT much.
"
All jokes aside, I've had the v2 for about 3 months now, and I absolutely love it. If the v2 is already this awesome, then the v3 is going to be a real winner. Enjoy your new Maxwells! -
Cakefish, can you try the benchmarks without a cooler please? Many people (including me) would not use one.
-
This ^^. I dont want to have my laptop fixed in one place to be able to game and/or take the cooler with me when i travel from house to house to game.
-
Yes please, results with no cooler. I don't care if you prop it up a bit, I do that with all my gaming laptops by habit, just no cooler.

I'm a bit late to the party, but while looking for something else, I stumbled upon this piece that has several games benchmarked with the 980M at 2560x1600, along with some comparisons with gaming at 1080p. Should be pretty helpful for those looking for an apples-to-apples comparison.
And about those CPU thermals... If someone would send me a sample I'd be glad to go to town with it like I did with my Clevo.
OK maybe not if it was a loaner, but seriously I think a combination of
1. undervolting the CPU
2. lapping the CPU heatsink to a mirror finish
3. applying Liquid Ultra paste
should help shave 10C off the CPU with some luck.ericc191 likes this. -

Here is another, comparing 1080p performance: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M Performance Testing - Mobile Gaming at its Best | GTX 980M Performance -
TLDR version:
dont buy 3k screen ? -
Its fine if you can stand 30fps or lowering settings on metro...
Sent from my GT-I9300 -
Err, no? Where does it say that?
-
to even make a game playable >30fps you need to downscale to 1080p
-
But its to make the 10 most difficult games for you GPU to handle that presently exist you need to downscale, for the other 99,990 games it is more up in the air. Not saying 980m can handle 3k easily. But running games like Crysis 3 and Metro LL that require a GTX 980 SLI to max out settings even in 1080p is a rather absurd bar. The question is more where other recent games fall, like Rome Total War II, or Grid autosport, or Bioshock Infinite.
Edit: never mind they did test Bioshock infinite it got 66 FPS average, so probably only about 60 FPS average in 3k, but still very good. -

Wait for the 3k benchmarks without MSAA. This guy reports 80fps in BF4 at 2880x1620 resolution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KkB93EXSW4 -
One way of reducing CPU temps... is to disable turboboost. Set the Maximum Processing Power in the battery advanced options to 99%.

So tempting!
I'm thinking ShadowPlay footage of various titles later on. Thoughts?
Also, yes, I will run a temp test without cooler.
Also, I will try and track down a screwdriver while I'm out that fits that one troublesome screw head so that I can show you all the guts of this critter.
Also also, I will further experiment with CPU undervolting (-50mv went smoothly in yesterday's preliminary testing).

How about some overclocking results on the GPU? Also, is your CPU maintaining max boost when gaming and benchmarking (ie during the CPU Physics tests)? I ask this because the CPU scores aren't very impressive, and your CPU temperatures are starting to look like the limiting factor.
It looks like maxing out games at your native res isn't very playable for today's & some of yesterday's games - Tomb Raider and the Metro benches you ran - but we knew that was gonna be the case anyway. (EDIT: and yes Tomb Raider and Metro when maxed were some of the most demanding games of yesterday, but this says nothing of the most demanding games of tomorrow!) -
Yeah -50mv is pretty safe there is no guarantee, but I suspect you would be really unlucky to get a CPU that can't manage that. The real question is -70, 90, 126.7mv
Be interesting to see the difference in temperatures even with only a -50mv undervolt though.
He also did have Tress-FX AND ultimate shadows enabled on tomb raider. Admittedly those are part of max settings, but I have heard they both hit your FPS really hard. And Metro is probably the 3rd or 4th toughest to run game presently in existence.Reks likes this. -
I knew coming into this that future graphic monsters such as The Witcher 3 was going to be completely out of the question at native resolution. My main concern was: does it look bad scaling at 1080p? The answer to that seems to be no. Obviously not as good as native resolution but from a guy who's spent over a year with a 17.3" 1080p display, I'm very happy with the results.

Well lets not forget driver tweaking and updates from dev's, those profiles can really make or break a games ability to use the cards to their fullest, and seeing as they're still new I'd give it a few months for things to tweak. I'm sure there will be at least a 17-26% gain in FPS minimum with the next few sets of drivers, seems to have been the same for most previous generations so you never know.
-

I doubt there's that much performance tweaking left in the tank when it comes to drivers - Maxwell has been out for months & months with the 750ti. (February this year) -
Besides gaming, how Windows 8.1 manages high DPI? In both Modern and Classic UIs please!
-
Hey Cakey,
Great to see the evidence of how the performs at 980M on demanding games, but those would be pretty unplayable for many people, if only because the Minimum framerates are so low. What would really be interesting would be if you did a review and basically found the maximum settings that enables a smooth 50-60fps on each game at native resolution. I am guessing that large amounts of AA are not really needed for that res, and you could probably get away with 2x AA (or basic 4x) and it would still look good.

Cake, thanks for taking the time to do all of this. I think I've been led to the conclusion that that CPU is just too hot for my liking. Now.. to wait for some initial reviews of the P650SE/SG. If it's also hot and throttles, I may have to give up sexy good looks and a thin shell and buy the same old boring P150SM-A
.
-
Our problem is, even with the 4710HQ the issue will be there, as both have TDP of 47W.
It's funny how the CPU gets super hot and the 980M, which I believe eats 100W, runs way cooler.ericc191 likes this. -
Which begs the question: are CPU and GPU separately cooled or share the 2 fans? In this case most likely separate.
Please upload a upskirt shot of P35X v3, @Cakefish

P35X CPU & GPU share both fans. Clevo P650/P651 does not - the CPU there has a single fan.
Will do as soon as I can locate the right sized screwdriver... don't want to strip the head off the screws.

What program do you guys recommand to undervolt the 4860HQ? Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel® XTU) ?
Thanks!
