If you lift the backpanel so you get the opening directly over the pin, the job get easier.
Btw, is that picture taken with the Nexus5? good quality!

Sorry guys, the Nexus 5 is utter s**t for taking pics in low light

Holy s***, its the same thing basically except a bit larger heatsinks? (the layout of the mobo is a tiny bit different as well, below the GPU)
-
Can you take off the fans without taking heatpipe along with them?
Regards -
P35X v3
P35W v2
I think this looks good! It is very limited what is possible to change inside a laptop like this! -
Is it just me or do the fan assemblies and maybe even the amount of metal in heatsinks and heatpipes seem a little larger in the V3? I would hope so since they said they "improved the cooling". I was hoping it was more than just the 4rth software entry for fan profiles.
-
Heatsinks are larger thats for sure. But my extra pipe dreams are dead
Though Cakefish's numbers are excellent imho (Cake please comment on the throttling bro, does it throttle at 90C or is this the max?).
-
Please turn the P35 around and take picture of the heatsinks!
Edit: Pictures of exhaust etc! -
The heatpipes / fans look identical to me, but the blocks on the CPU/GPU look different.
Cakefish, if you would, I'd love to see some decibel ratings while at max load. There are a few free sound meter apps for android on the play store, but I'm not sure how well they can be calibrated.
I'm trying to decide between the p35x v3 and p35w v3. If the p35x holds around 55db at full load I will probably go with the 980m. -
The curve of the heat-pipes also appears slightly less sharp, and there are no crimp marks. It looks to be a bunch of subtle differences, but those can add up.
-
-50mV undervolt on the CPU should typically net you 4-5C in thermals, but you may not see it if the CPU was throttling at 90C before, now it may simply run the full boost and reach the 90C throttling temp again, which is why as Robbo said it's important to monitor clockspeed in realtime.
And yeah the best you can do is about 10W savings from undervolting CPU, so that 180W still won't have a lot of breathing room. -
I can't get the friggin' screws out of the HDD bracket. They won't budge D:
The first ones came off easy (the ones that attach to the laptop chassis) but the ones that attach the HDD to the bracket are not budging and are stripping away the heads - what the heck to do? -
Use pliers if the screw is completely stripped.

Stop what you're doing and get a proper set of small screwdrivers for electronic items if you've not already got a good set. I use these ones:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hama-000396...d=1415206501&sr=8-1&keywords=Hama+screwdriver -
It was the wrong size screwdriver bit. So easy to do! Turns out it wasn't stripped that much. Came out easy enough once I got the right fitting bit.
Ugh, laptops are a pain to disassemble aren't they?
Aaaaaand I've gone and dropped the screw on the floor somewhere... oh god, this might take hours to find it. -
The 980m won't be the source of the noise anyway, since it seems the CPU is the one that matters.
So the p35w v3 may not be quieter than the p35x -

Come on, get on with it, I don't think we need a blow by blow account of what underwear you're wearing and what you had for breakfast, surely this thread has enough fluff already! -
Finally found it. And to think, I'm going to have to go through this all over again when my Smasung 850 Pro arrives... yeesh
EDIT: Clevo was a pain to disassemble too, this isn't just this laptop. Me and laptops don't get on when I have to take them apart. I am terrible at DIY. -
Dropping small screws is why I have a bar magnet on a handle to pass over the carpet or lino. It's very handy if you periodically drop screws and such. PROTO Retrieving Tool,Telescopic Magnetic - Magnetic Pickups - 5C598|J2375 - Grainger Industrial Supply

You can also strip a magnet out of broken earphones to catch the screws.

Everybody is curious about throttling
If this laptop doesn't throttle and max at 90C it is a no brainer perfect laptop ever. IF it does throttle at 90C like Aorus does at 70C, then well, its not as bad, but we gotta find a fix to it (best laptop cooler on planet
). Though it is a thin laptop, I think this is pretty much expected.

Besides using a laptop cooler and TIM repaste, using ThrottleStop to turn off TurboBoost and undervolt would help lower the temps right?
-
Anything else you'd like to know before I seal it back up for the day?
-
Looking at the picture, I can't help myself but think that there is room for improvement in the future. For example, if you remove the optical bay (that is really not mandatory anymore imo), you can use a much bigger battery, or even a very big fan here that you could connect to another pipe (the big fan wouldn't have to be fast, therefore could be silent).
-
a good paste with great contact (without any airbubbles) will definitely help, but not as much as undervolting or laptop cooler helps.

Can you test if it's water resistant by pouring 20 liters of water on the motherboard, then use a hammer to check if it's very robust or not ?moviemarketing, diego-d and Sandwhale like this.

Don't bash him too hard he started at level 1 like the rest of us plus he clearly has a screw loose, by now he might be close to reaching level 2 or 3, soon he might be able to leave the newbie zone and start tackling the dangerous monsters like repasting, or a boss like Liquid ultra or Lapping.LunaP, Lythandra, Kaozm and 1 other person like this.

I've already repasted my Clevo many times. Sorry for the fuss. I get properly paranoid when I open laptops up.
-
Save yourself a little effort and only put in a few of the screws holding the back panel on, it won't hurt for a few days. Since you're taking it back apart anyway, it will save you the time of taking back out and chance of stripping them.RMXO likes this.

I see so many contradictory recommendations on laptop coolers, which ones are the best?

Amazon Best Sellers: Best Laptop & Netbook Computer Cooling Pads
I use coolermaster notepal x2 (the worst cooling pad ever, it is noisy + very little efficient), I don't own a machine that needs serious cooling atm, the reason why I am still sticking with this. But check out Amazon best sellers I linked above. There are many good ones there!

Btw : semi-off topic, but I did mention this laptop being reviewed in the Clevo p650sx owner forum as many people are undecided on which they want, they are by far the closest competitors. Either way it appears HTWingNut has his hands on a p651se so we all can have a look at both

Again, everyone I apologise for being an idiot back then
I'm paranoid I'm going to break something whenever I open these laptops up. Especially this one as I didn't know what to expect. It'll go smoother next time as I will know what to do.
Thank you all for your help. Very much appreciated. -
This is why I like CM NotePal U3 with being able to move the 3 fans to any location but the downside its really made for 16"+.
No need to apologize. Its your laptop and you have the right to be paranoid and take things slowly. Its not like the people who whine will pay for your laptop if you mess up or anything. Don't listen to those folks, do at your own pace and do whats most comfortable to you. Lastly, thanks for doing this and being the first here.John566, muratjohn, Scriptabit and 5 others like this. -

Just before I get back to benching... I installed an SSD to replace the HDD, which I'll place into the swappable ODD bay (not the 850 Pro but a temp one I bought today in the computer store while looking for screwdrivers - it was on offer). The BIOS recognises the drive but Windows does not. What to do?
EDIT: device manager sees the drive but file explorer does not. -
How does one do that? Really sorry about all these questions I'm asking - should be the other way around.

Search for Disk Management in the Control Panel.

You can format by using windows default disk management. I'm currently walking or would give you the exactly steps to get to it. I believe right click on my computer > properties and look for disk management.

Thank you. I realised that that may be the case just after I posted that question. Silly me.
EDIT: DONE
Thank you all so much for helping.
Now it's time for me to return the favour... -
Have you tested battery life?
-
Can you weigh the laptop too please ? (With and without the HDD now that you removed it, the SSD should be around 80 grams so not a big deal). Thanks !
