Yeah, its obviously a structural weakness because of the replacable HDD/ODD.

For the next version they should leave out the optical drive in favor of 2 dedicated HDD bays and bigger battery. Or they could spin the HDD bay by 90 degrees, fit an elongated battery in the front and then use the extra space to redesign the motherboard and cooling.

I mean, if you really need and optical drive you can just buy an external one for something like 20-30 Eur.

Guys I have a question, sorry if I keep pushing this but it's really killing me. So it's either the P35X V3 or the Asus ZenBook Pro UX501, since Razer Blade is 1.) Too expensive and 2.) Has too small capacity and according to you guys MSI GS60 isn't that good. So with those two gone I think it's only up to these 2. Based on what I read and seen so far, other than the P35X V3 having a better GPU (GTX 980M vs GTX960M) and having an optical drive that's swappable (which is basically like carrying an external optical drive) I think the UX501 has better build quality (no flex, premium quality materials), temperature, noise, sound, display, etc. Is this really the case? Are there laptops out there that are thin and has atleast an GTX 960M that's better than this two? What would you recommend from the two?

the delta between a 8GB 980M and a 2GB 960M is huge. It will come down to if you really need a 980m versus 960m. Apparently asus warrenty repair is a nightmare to deal with but i haven't personally had to deal with them before.

It looks to me the UX501[1] is the twin brother of the G501[2]. Perhaps this review[3] applies to the UX501 as well. The keyboard seems pretty mushy.

Yeah, the only difference between the G501 and the UX501 (I actually found out about the UX501 after following the G501 for quite a while) is the battery life (which is longer idek why), no gamer design, and I think the touch screen (not sure about that though). Yeah I think the keyboard is also mushy based on one video I saw, but I'm still not sure which the "overall" better one will tip to on a scale :/

The 980m in this form factor makes a really interesting value proposition compared to the GS60, but I'm really concerned about the build quality. Can any owners chime in on the fit and finish of the p35x? Is the bulge from the ODD avoidable if you dont put any drive at all in that slot?

build quality is hit and miss. you will have a bulge no matter what. It's actually from the hard drive. You will have a slight keyboard bulge as well. i have no complaints other than those two issues.

Keyboard buldge can be mitigated by changing the screw lengths on the bottom of the laptop that correspond to the keyboard (there are 4, you don't even need to open the laptop to do this).

I don't have the buldge that people talk about. My trackpack is basically flush, same goes for the bottom left corner where the hard drive is located.

I'm honestly more annoyed by the constant finger grease clean up. If you want this thing to look nice, you're going to have to keep it wiped down, but this is also an issue with the gs60, razer blade, and other black chassis laptops (I think we know why apple went with silver now).

The keyboard screws are the shorter one, however, on some shipments we found out Gigabyte use all screws with longer lengths.

Maybe a universal adapter with converter tip, most of the factory adapters above 200W uses different connector tip.

Also, I just tried another battery test.
Surfing on chrome with 20+ tab opened, occasionally watch youtube video, and a 1.3mb/s download at the same time. With 4 antivirus app opened in the background. I got 4.5 hours of battery life.

After that I just used chrome and do some heavy surfing(20+ tab), opened up word 2013, and the laptop right showed me 5hours and 18 minutes of battery life at 88%

Iv'e been using this laptop for a week now and just this morning, half the keys on my keyboard stopped working, both in the bios and in windows. tried many things to fix the issue.. only after dismantling the unit and disconnecting the battery then reconnecting it was i able to restore full keyboard function. has this issue happened to anyone else? Is there an easy way to "reset" the battery without taking the laptop apart?

I personally haven't ran into that issue. You could try running the battery out next time instead of taking it apart and try that.

    Hello everyone,

for some time (about 1 month) I have some trouble with the USB 2.0 ports of my p35x. Any device plugged into them is not recognized at all. I tested this under win 8.1 and ubuntu 14. Even a bootable usb drive is not recognized from the BIOS. When using the 3.0 ports everything works fine. When checking the device manager I noticed that 2 usb devices are not recognized properly by windows. The Error just says Code 43 "A request for the device descriptor failed" (screenshots attached)

The USB 2.0 ports were definitly fine when I bought the notebook last december but I can't really tell when they stopped working as Imainly use the 3.0 ports.

I tend to keep the OS, driver and bios up to date. So this shouldn't be an issue.

What I have tried so far to solve the problem:
    • uninstall all usb devices and controller (from device manager), reboot and reinstall
    • reinstall intel chipset driver
    • unplug battery
    • downgrad BIOS to FB09 (unfortunately I can't find a download for the previous versions)

unfortunately without success so far :(

I hope that someone of you might have an idea how to solve that problem.

    regards

Hi, does no how much lower the temperature will be if you do a repaste, thank you :)
my laptop cpu temp while surfing the web is around 45-50 Celsius (usually at 50C), I'm a bit worried because that's a bit higher than my macbook pro, which is around 35-40 Celsius during the same task (albeit less tab opened)

    Guys,

If I have the option to buy this laptop with a 256gb SSD / 1tb HD and 16gb ram for c£1.1k used but its 8-9 months old, would you say thats worth it given all of the issues surrounding it? Still has 1 years warranty on it.

    Thanks,

It usually doesn't make huge difference on slim laptops with powerful GPU like P35 series, usually only few degrees difference after repaste, maybe only a degrees or two.

I got a good 5-7 degrees off in the high ranges, 3-4 degrees off in idle. The 50C idle temp is perfectly fine. Don't worry about it.

Considering that it's 8-9 months old, that means it was probably part of the first batches, meaning that the issues that many have mentioned may be present. It seems like later batches have been better, but don't quote me on that.

EDIT: New Beta Intel Management Drivers (not new if you got it from Intel, but Gigabyte is finally pushing it) and HD audio Drivers via Smart Update.

I just did a -50mv, although the cpu only reached 68 C during the stress test, the idling temp was actually hotter, from 50C to 55C :(
Any idea what caused this problem ?

Hey guys I'm new on here but have any of you updated the smart manager recently? I did a few days ago to 4.7 and it seems like the fan controls are changed... I don't have silent, or auto modes anymore... I only have eco, normal, turbo, and extreme. I really liked the auto Max fan setting, I used it all of the time. But now I'm constantly having to switch from extreme to normal when playing games and it's really annoying... Why did they change them, am I missing something?

Try testing and restarting your computer to be sure. My idle seems to be the same near 50C at -40mv and -50mv.

You did do -50mv and not +50mv, right?

yes, it's -48mv for dynamic voltage option.
Also, why is the xtus shows 4gb gpu memory and the nvidia control panel shows 8 gb ?

by the way, thanks for answering so many of my questions :)

That's odd, try -40mv, see if that helps your temps.

If I had to guess, intel's XTU only expects up to 4gb. Of course nvidia will report the right amount, it damn well better.

Yup, no problem. I wish this thread was as alive as it was a few months ago.

So...I've been stress testing my undervolt on XTU and its been going super super well, and I just want to make sure I'm doing this right because it seems almost too good to be true.

    I have been stress testing:

    35x, 34x, 28x, 28x multipliers on the cores

-70mV under-volt on Dynamic CPU Voltage Offset, Processor Cache Voltage Offset, and Processor Graphics Voltage Offset

Its been going for 2hrs so far at 100% CPU usage and only 59°C

    Does that all sound right?

I'm also plugged in obviously and using Auto-High fans

I'm considering purchasing this computer with 16g ram and the 1080p screen, or a similarly built Sager np8652.
The portability/thin qualities really attract me to the p35x, as well as the longer battery life, but the 500 dollar price difference turns me away, as well as he fact I can add less in terms of RAM and HDD/SSDs!
But mainly, if its still throttling.

Has the recent bios updates done away with the heat and throttling concerns?
Any other pertinent remarks welcome :)

you wont get rid of throttling in something this thin unless you repaste with liquid pro. However if portability is what you need ( this is actually why i sold my sager np8651 ) you can't get any other laptop with a 980m in it this thin.

Play some games. I could run -70mv fine in benchmarks and stress tests, but I would crash in csgo = not stable.

Probably too good to be true. Test it out with normal usage first.

I never get thermal throttled. I have repasted using gelid extreme. New bios makes throttle start at 95c instead of 90c.

Wow, everthing enable and set to maximum setting (including the gamework stuff) in witcher 3 and a 980m still get a stable 30 fps. And a 980m actually beat a 290x on this setting.
    wow.

Guys, great news, disable the Nvidia Streamer service and you will have a lower idle temperature, mine drop to a 46C (from 51C) after disabling it!

I just think I found out why undervolting won't drop the temperature.
The idle frequency stayed at 2.7ghz after undervolting (from 0.8Ghz during idle)
Anyone got any idea how to drop the frequency as well?
    Thanks :)
